“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” is a community theater standard, a smallcast crowd pleaser that’s cheap to produce. But Olney’s production doesn’t rest on the jazzy music and old jokes, choosing instead to pay specific homages to the cartoon and focus on charismatic yet sweetly tragic plays on our deepest childhood anxieties. People spend their whole lives studying Shakespeare’s sonnets, so it’s no surprise that pianist Burnett Thompson has been able to devote more than a decade to writing a song cycle based on the collection of poems.
