According to the suit, the man used his wife’s iPhone to summon Uber rides and then signed out of the app, but the phone continued to notify his wife of his rides — and thus his illicit liaisons. He has sued Uber for $47.8 million, the French newspaper Le Figaro reported last week. (EXPRESS)
Zoo officials in Mannheim, Germany, were asking the public to help find a penguin believed stolen from its exhibit. The Humboldt penguin, a species native to South Africa, was discovered missing during a head count Saturday, UPI reported. Officials concluded it had been stolen because no signs of escape were found. The flightless bird would be hard to fence: It has the number 53 on a wing as well as an implanted ID chip. (EXPRESS)
A suspected vehicle thief got more than he bargained for Sunday in Riverside, Calif. Police said he stole a van from a mortuary but then returned it when he realized there was a body inside. After stealing a second van, police said, he almost ran over a mortuary employee while driving away. The officer on the scene to investigate the first theft then pursued the second van for more than 2 miles and made the arrest. (AP)

Her comments were made during her eighth and final spring planting, but “hopefully,” she added, “this will not be the last” one ever. First lady Melania Trump has confirmed that although the garden’s founder may have vacated the premises, her beloved garden lives on. “As a mother and as the First Lady of this country, Mrs. Trump is committed to the preservation and continuation of the White House Gardens, specifically the First Lady’s Kitchen Garden and the Rose Garden,” Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, senior adviser to the first lady, said in a statement to CNN. The garden was, at last count, 1,700 square feet in size, but for the past eight years it has occupied a much larger space symbolically, as Michelle Obama used her platform to fight childhood obesity and improve America’s eating habits. Throughout that fight, health advocates said, the garden was a physical reminder of Obama’s message.
“The vegetables wind up in dinners for the first family,” Zak noted. “Almost 500 pounds of them have been shipped to homeless shelters. In 2010, they ripened into Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign, for which the first lady danced with Elmo and Jimmy Fallon in order to get kids off the couch.” The garden — located on the corner of the South Lawn — more than doubled in area during the Obama presidency. The quote on the 8- by 10-inch print misspelled “too” as “to.” The full quote reads, “No dream is too big, no challenge is to great. Nothing we want for the future is beyond our reach.” The print was on sale at the Library of Congress online store for $16.95 until about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Third whale this month washes up on a Va. beach Another whale has washed up on a beach in Virginia, likely after being struck by a boat propeller, officials said, the third such animal to die this month. Reports of the whale were received Saturday, according to a spokesman for the Virginia Aquarium, and it washed ashore late Saturday or early Sunday. Congress calls for White House tours to resume The White House Visitors Office typically halts tours during presidential transitions, as the new president brings in staff to run the operation, but the three-weeks-and-counting lull under the new administration is unusually long. That’s not lost on members of Congress, who handle constituent requests for tours. On Sunday, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, cheekily tweeted at “whoever monitors twitter at WH for businessman president Trump” asking when the tours would resume. Making the request more urgent, he added, “Mrs G wants to know.” Grassley and his wife aren’t the only ones wondering. At least two dozen lawmakers have signed a letter circulating on Capitol Hill urging the swift reopening of the office that handles tours. “This time-honored tradition of allowing visitors into the White House was started by Thomas Jefferson in 1805, and previous administrations have been quick to reopen the White House doors to the public, even doing so the day after the Inauguration,” the letter reads. “Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama all appointed a White House Visitors Office Director before being sworn in, and had reopened the White House to the public at this point.” Many of the signatories have hundreds of requests piling up. Maryland weighs a change to sex ed Two lawmakers push for schools to teach ‘yes means yes’ consent EDUCATION Two Maryland lawmakers are pushing legislation that would require the state’s public schools to teach a “yes means yes” standard for sexual consent, wading into a national debate as they try to change the way young people think about romantic relationships. Maryland would become only the second state to require public schools to teach affirmative consent if the legislature and Republican Gov. Larry Hogan approve the proposal by Dels. Ariana Kelly and Marice Morales, both Montgomery County Democrats. California adopted a similar mandate in 2015, in the wake of rape allegations involving a student at Stanford University who argued that his sexual encounter with an intoxicated young woman was consensual. An unsecure approach Trump campaigned on keeping secrets safe. That’s not how he’s governing. ANALYSIS Close observers of the 2016 election will remember that President Trump liked to draw attention to his opponent’s security practices as a way of criticism. There was, you may recall, something about an email server. “Hillary Clinton … sent classified information, even during her travels overseas, jeopardizing the national security of the American people by allowing her emails to be hacked by foreign intelligence services,” Trump’s campaign website declared. But it wasn’t just Clinton who was the target of his criticism: The Democratic National Committee got hacked because it didn’t have a “very strong defense system against hacking” the way the Republicans did. The government was hacked by China because “we’re run by people that don’t know what they’re doing.” Trump, the idea went, would not be naive on the subject of national security. Perhaps it’s harder than it looks.
Sunday night, CNN reported details of the moment that Trump, joined by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, learned about a missile launch in North Korea. Trump and Abe were enjoying dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida at the time, but, CNN reported, began to discuss the details of this international incident right there at their table. “Trump and Abe’s evening meal quickly morphed into a strategy session, the decision-making on full view to fellow diners, who described it in detail to CNN,” CNN’s Kevin Liptak reported. Earlier in the week, Trump had been criticized for leaving intelligence documents vulnerable to people without security clearance. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., noticed that the president kept the key in a secured bag while hosting people in the Oval Office, which is a bit like leaving your house keys in your front door while you’re having a party in your backyard. There’s no indication that anyone

White House ‘evaluating’ Flynn’s future POLITICS The White House broke its silence on the future of national security adviser Michael Flynn Monday in two conflicting statements. In the afternoon, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said President Trump is “evaluating the situation” involving Flynn. Spicer said Trump was speaking with Vice President Mike Pence and others about the matter. Earlier Monday, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Flynn has Trump’s backing. “He does enjoy the full confidence of the president,” Conway said. Questions have surrounded Flynn in the wake of reports that he misled senior officials about his contacts with Russia in December, before Trump took office. Flynn apologized privately to Pence for the controversy, according to an administration official. Pence, relying on information from Flynn, publicly vouched that the retired Army lieutenant general did not improperly discuss sanctions with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. Flynn has since told the White House that sanctions may have come up in the calls. Flynn sat in the front row of Trump’s news conference Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Flynn matter did not come up during the conference. Nearly 200,000 people who were ordered to leave their homes out of fear that a spillway could collapse may not be able to return until the barrier at the nation’s tallest dam is repaired, a sheriff said Monday. Officials from the California Department of Water Resources were considering using helicopters to drop loads of rock onto the eroded spillway at Lake Oroville, about 150 miles northeast of San Francisco. Meanwhile, the water level behind the dam dropped, easing slightly the fears of a catastrophic spillway collapse. As of Monday, officials said water was flowing out of the lake at nearly twice the rate as water flowing into it. But with more rain expected Wednesday and Thursday, time was running short to fix the damage ahead of the storms. Authorities ordered mass evacuations Sunday for everyone living below the lake out of concern that the spillway could fail and send a 30-foot wall of water roaring downstream. About

The water level in the lake rose significantly in recent weeks after storms dumped rain and snow across California, particularly
in northern parts of the state. The high water forced the use of the dam’s emergency spillway Saturday for the first time in the dam’s nearly 50-year history. Sunday afternoon’s evacuation order came after engineers spotted a hole in the earthen secondary spillway for the 770-foot-tall Oroville Dam and told authorities that it could fail within the hour. Unexpected erosion had chewed through the main spillway, sending chunks of concrete flying and creating a 200-foot-long,
30-foot-deep hole that continues to grow. The acting director of the Department of Water Resources, Bill Croyle, said officials will be able to assess the damage to the emergency spillway now that the lake level has come down. Veteran first baseman says position players don’t need 7 weeks MLB Early in his career, Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman received a piece of advice from a veteran relief pitcher. He can’t remember who it was from, but the wisdom of the message stayed with him. “The best way to get through spring training is not to work out at all in the offseason,” Zimmerman recalled. “Put your cleats on and stand in your driveway and drink a six-pack of beer.” Zimmerman, 32, laughed at the retelling, but the advice contained a kernel of logic. Ballplayers report in peak physical condition after a winter of refined workouts often overseen by professional trainers. And then, for the first week or so — before the month of irrelevant exhibitions — they shag batting practice fly balls or cycle into drills practicing bunt plays and rundowns.
“Silly things like that, everyone does just to say that they did it,” Zimmerman said. “Then everyone’s back is jacked up from standing around doing nothing.” For most players, spring training brings the tedium of mindless drills and meaningless games. It is an anachronism almost entirely for the benefit of around 12 people per club. Teams do not need it to make money. Position players do not need most of it to prepare for the season. But pitchers, especially starters, need two months in a warm locale to build stamina and strength slowly enough to limit injury risk. Because of those pitchers, 30 teams will spend about seven weeks — including an extra week this year to accommodate the World Baseball Classic — and more than 30 games preparing to play another six months. “For me as a position player, it’s unnecessary,” Zimmerman said. According to Zimmerman, he needs 60 to 75 at-bats, about two weeks’ worth,to feel ready. w

Washington agreed to terms Monday with power-hitting lefty Adam Lind, according to a person familiar with the situation. The deal, which becomes official once Lind passes a physical, will pay Lind $1 million in 2017 and includes a club option for 2018. Lind, 33, would serve as the fourth outfielder and backup first baseman, likely bumping Clint Robinson from the opening day bench. In 126 games with Seattle last year, Lind hit 20 home runs. New this year because the World Cup of Hockey took place right before the season, each NHL team gets this break at a different point in the schedule. If it were up to Capitals coach Barry Trotz, he would tweak the schedule for the byes. “I think it’s good,” Trotz said earlier this month. “Obviously, it’s the first try at it. But I think when you come out of the bye week, the first couple games that you play should be teams that are having the bye week at the same time with you because I think your level of play and where you are after a couple games, it’s different.” Trotz’s concern stems from how Washington handled a long break last season. A January snowstorm caused two games to be postponed and that, coupled with the All-Star break, meant the Capitals played just two games in two weeks. That’s now an option at Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport, which has the only full gym at a U.S. airport that’s past security: Roam Fitness opened at the end of last month and has plans to open 20 more at other airports by 2020. It’s the latest example of how fitness and health trends have started showing up at airports. Yoga rooms and walking tracks have opened at airports around North America over the past few years, and healthier food options are also easier to find in airports. The Roam Fitness gym at BWI includes an attendant who monitors guests’ flights and will alert them if there’s a delay. There are even showers, luggage storage and options for renting Lululemon and Brooks workout clothes and shoes. Fees range from $40 a day to $175 a month. The concept was initially envisioned for international travelers

Freezing temps are no excuse to give up on fitness. Indeed, a new study published in Scientific Reports found that people actively trying to shed pounds had the best results when the temperature dropped. The more inhospitable the weather, the more conscientious people became about keeping track of their meals and calories. Researchers tracked the weight loss of 3,274 people under 42 throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia for a year with Noom Coach, a fitness app that can pinpoint the location of users. They then used a meteorology service, called Weather Underground API, to monitor conditions, and discovered that colder temperatures and lower dew points as well as higher wind speed and precipitation were all linked to the app users’ weight loss. Helping your parents and grandmother physically, financially and emotionally does not necessitate sleeping in a too-small room or forsaking an independent life. Presumably, there are other housing options nearby; what would be reasonable in terms of a number of visits and errands per week? Automating some of the bill-paying? Contributing to an extra helper when the
time may come? Start communicating honestly. Avoiding the issue will only make you resentful (not a great look on a caregiver). Spell out clearly that you visualize having your own place but you will still be available for X, Y and Z. Yes, you may feel guilty. But if you can find a way to get some space while continuing meaningful support, you’ll feel much freer — and may even be better company when you’re with them.

Alcohol abuse can be a relationship killer, whether someone is an everyday drinker or not. In fact, people often falsely convince themselves they don’t have a problem because they are able to go a certain period of time without drinking. But it need not be about the frequency of someone’s drinking — it can also be about who they become when they do it. Clearly, he’s got a problem, and instead of looking at himself, he’s deflecting blame to your not being fun enough. (And since when does being younger mean being less able to enjoy oneself?) entertainment Adele besting Beyonce exposes the awards show’s big problem PERSPECTIVE Each year on Grammy night, the Recording Academy plunges deeper into a dim trench of irrelevance, making it difficult to get too worked up over its chronic fumbles. But this year was different. When industry voters chose Adele’s conventional best-seller, “25,” over Beyonce’s provocative “Lemonade” for album of the year at Sunday’s awards, the ritual nonsense had curdled into something unacceptable. For the past five years, black artists have been making eradefining pop music, some of which has been nominated for the heaviest Grammy, album of
the year. Then, when “music’s biggest night” rolls around, each of these artists loses to a white act doing less-challenging, lesstimely, less-imaginative work. Check the tapes. Frank Ocean lost to Mumford & Sons in 2013. Kendrick Lamar lost to Daft Punk in 2014. Beyonce lost to Beck in 2015. Lamar lost again in 2016, this time to Taylor Swift. And on Sunday, at her creative peak, Beyonce lost to Adele. Go back even further, and you’ll see white artists have won album of the year for nine consecutive years. What are academy members voting for when they cast those ballots, anyway? Recognizable names? Creative visions? Booming sales? If the answer is “all of the above,” it’s hard to see how they passed on “Lemonade.” This wasn’t just a superstar’s sharpest

and so beautiful, and soul-baring.” Even after the band played her off, she kept on it. “I feel like it was her time to win,” Adele told reporters after the ceremony. “What the f--- does she have to do to win album of the year?”
That felt nice, hearing an industry darling scold the academy for making the wrong pick. But there’s really only one change we should hope to see at next year’s Grammys: fewer stars. Fed up with the Grammys’ perennial mishandling of black music, Frank Ocean protested this year’s awards by declining to submit his work for nomination. Other stars seemed to have followed his lead. On Sunday, Drake was on tour in England. Kanye West was nowhere to be seen. Even Justin Bieber sat it out. Next year, aggrieved artists should consider refusing to submit their work altogether. Green responded on Twitter, simply tagging @GnarlyDOfficial, aka Gnarly Davidson. According to Complex, Davidson is Green’s new musical alter ego. Derek Jeter’s wife, Hannah, announced they are expecting their first child together, a girl. The Sports Illustrated swimsuit star revealed the news Monday in an essay on her husband’s website, The Players’ Tribune. The announcement includes a photo of the 42-year-old Yankees legend holding a bouquet of pink balloons. Hannah Jeter also said Derek already has a name picked out, but she hasn’t settled on it yet. She wrote: “Whatever her name is, I know she’ll run circles around him.” The 26-year-old added they want their “kids’ lives to be as ‘normal’ as possible” because “they’re going to be born into such an extraordinary situation.” (AP)

After Adele beat Beyonce in the top categories at Sunday’s Grammys, Beyonce’s sister and artist Solange threw some shade at the awards. In a since-deleted tweet, she wrote, “Waddup frank” along with a link to Frank Ocean’s blog post on the Grammys’ “cultural bias” in snubbing black artists year after year.
