Suspect’s second car theft was really more of a terrified flight

A French entrepreneur is suing San Franciscobased Uber, claiming that a glitch in its app revealed his infidelity and led to his divorce. According to the suit, the man used his wife’s iPhone to summon Uber rides and then signed out of the app, but the phone continued to notify his wife of his rides — and thus his illicit liaisons. He has sued Uber for $47.8 million, the French newspaper Le Figaro reported last week. (EXPRESS)

Zoo officials in Mannheim, Germany, were asking the public to help find a penguin believed stolen from its exhibit. The Humboldt penguin, a species native to South Africa, was discovered missing during a head count Saturday, UPI reported. Officials concluded it had been stolen because no signs of escape were found. The flightless bird would be hard to fence: It has the number 53 on a wing as well as an implanted ID chip. (EXPRESS)

A suspected vehicle thief got more than he bargained for Sunday in Riverside, Calif. Police said he stole a van from a mortuary but then returned it when he realized there was a body inside. After stealing a second van, police said, he almost ran over a mortuary employee while driving away. The officer on the scene to investigate the first theft then pursued the second van for more than 2 miles and made the arrest. (AP)

THE DISTRICT It was less than a year ago that Michelle Obama referred to it as “her baby.” She wasn’t talking about her youngest daughter, Sasha, or the pet dog Bo, but the White House vegetable garden. Her comments were made during her eighth and final spring planting, but “hopefully,” she added, “this will not be the last” one ever. First lady Melania Trump has confirmed that although the garden’s founder may have vacated the premises, her beloved garden lives on. “As a mother and as the First Lady of this country, Mrs. Trump is committed to the preservation and continuation of the White House Gardens, specifically the First Lady’s Kitchen Garden and the Rose Garden,” Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, senior adviser to the first lady, said in a statement to CNN. garden was supposedly the first of its kind since Eleanor Roosevelt’s in 1943, The Washington Post’s Dan Zak reported in April. The garden was, at last count, 1,700 square feet in size, but for the past eight years it has occupied a much larger space symbolically, as Michelle Obama used her platform to fight childhood obesity and improve America’s eating habits. Throughout that fight, health advocates said, the garden was a physical reminder of Obama’s message.

“The vegetables wind up in dinners for the first family,” Zak noted. “Almost 500 pounds of them have been shipped to homeless shelters. In 2010, they ripened into Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign, for which the first lady danced with Elmo and Jimmy Fallon in order to get kids off the couch.” The garden — located on the corner of the South Lawn — more than doubled in area during the Obama presidency. Nicolas, a Caps fan, said he recognized the name before noticing the forward’s right hand was in a cast, the result of a slap shot last week. “I saw his hand, and I was like, ‘It is you!’ ” Nicolas, who lives in Silver Spring, then agreed to drive them to Northern Virginia. The quote on the 8- by 10-inch print misspelled “too” as “to.” The full quote reads, “No dream is too big, no challenge is to great. Nothing we want for the future is beyond our reach.” The print was on sale at the Library of Congress online store for $16.95 until about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. It’s not clear how many prints, if any, were recalled over the error. The print has been removed from the website. (TWP)

Environmentalists, who fought to block the earlier permit, say that evidence of some groundwater contamination at the Possum Point site makes the plan to keep the coal ash there dangerous to nearby residents and wildlife. Monitoring wells have shown elevated levels of nickel, boron and other metals in the groundwater, prompting Dominion to offer local households with private wells financial help to connect to Prince William’s public water system. Environmental groups and some local elected officials argue that the state should require the ash to be disposed of elsewhere.

Senate approval sends ‘Tebow Bill’ to McAuliffe The Virginia Senate voted 22-18 in favor a bill Monday that would allow home-schooled students to play high school sports. Congress calls for White House tours to resume The White House Visitors Office typically halts tours during presidential transitions, as the new president brings in staff to run the operation, but the three-weeks-and-counting lull under the new administration is unusually long. That’s not lost on members of Congress, who handle constituent requests for tours. On Sunday, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, cheekily tweeted at “whoever monitors twitter at WH for businessman president Trump” asking when the tours would resume. Making the request more urgent, he added, “Mrs G wants to know.” Grassley and his wife aren’t the only ones wondering. At least two dozen lawmakers have signed a letter circulating on Capitol Hill urging the swift reopening of the office that handles tours. “This time-honored tradition of allowing visitors into the White House was started by Thomas Jefferson in 1805, and previous administrations have been quick to reopen the White House doors to the public, even doing so the day after the Inauguration,” the letter reads. “Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama all appointed a White House Visitors Office Director before being sworn in, and had reopened the White House to the public at this point.” Many of the signatories have hundreds of requests piling up. Maryland weighs a change to sex ed Two lawmakers push for schools to teach ‘yes means yes’ consent EDUCATION Two Maryland lawmakers are pushing legislation that would require the state’s public schools to teach a “yes means yes” standard for sexual consent, wading into a national debate as they try to change the way young people think about romantic relationships. Maryland would become only the second state to require public schools to teach affirmative consent if the legislature and Republican Gov. Larry Hogan approve the proposal by Dels. Ariana Kelly and Marice Morales, both Montgomery County Democrats. California adopted a similar mandate in 2015, in the wake of rape allegations involving a student at Stanford University who argued that his sexual encounter with an intoxicated young woman was consensual. A bill sponsored by Kelly and Morales that would require Montgomery County Public Schools to teach affirmative consent in sexual education classes will be the focus of a hearing today before the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees education policy. The two lawmakers say they are

drafting a companion piece of legislation that would extend the mandate statewide. Both measures would define consent as “clear, unambiguous, knowing, informed and voluntary agreement between all participants to engage in each act within the course of sexual activity.” Local education officials would be required to teach the concept in both seventh and 10th grades, but individual districts would be able to decide how to tailor the lessons in an age-appropriate way. “We really want to flip the script on the old ways people used to talk about sex, which sometimes created a misbelief that boys should be coercing girls into something,” Kelly said. “As a mother with a son, I don’t want him growing up with that impression.” JOSH HICKS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

An unsecure approach Trump campaigned on keeping secrets safe. That’s not how he’s governing. ANALYSIS Close observers of the 2016 election will remember that President Trump liked to draw attention to his opponent’s security practices as a way of criticism. There was, you may recall, something about an email server. “Hillary Clinton … sent classified information, even during her travels overseas, jeopardizing the national security of the American people by allowing her emails to be hacked by foreign intelligence services,” Trump’s campaign website declared. But it wasn’t just Clinton who was the target of his criticism: The Democratic National Committee got hacked because it didn’t have a “very strong defense system against hacking” the way the Republicans did. The government was hacked by China because “we’re run by people that don’t know what they’re doing.” Trump, the idea went, would not be naive on the subject of national security. Perhaps it’s harder than it looks.

Sunday night, CNN reported details of the moment that Trump, joined by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, learned about a missile launch in North Korea. Trump and Abe were enjoying dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida at the time, but, CNN reported, began to discuss the details of this international incident right there at their table. “Trump and Abe’s evening meal quickly morphed into a strategy session, the decision-making on full view to fellow diners, who described it in detail to CNN,” CNN’s Kevin Liptak reported. Earlier in the week, Trump had been criticized for leaving intelligence documents vulnerable to people without security clearance. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., noticed that the president kept the key in a secured bag while hosting people in the Oval Office, which is a bit like leaving your house keys in your front door while you’re having a party in your backyard. There’s no indication that anyone

Trump’s phone NPR dug into the question of how secure President Trump’s Android device might be, and Berkeley computer scientist Nicholas Weaver was blunt. “Donald Trump for the longest time has been using a insecure Android phone that by all reports is so easy to compromise, it would not meet the security requirements of a teenager,” Weaver told NPR, and while he couldn’t say for sure, “we must assume that his phone has actively been compromised for a while, and an actively compromised phone is literally a listening device.” (TWP)

saw anything confidential in this incident, but this, Heinrich suggested, was “Classified 101.” Compared to having a national security conversation in public, though, the lockbag incident pales. It’s not clear that anyone heard particulars of the conversation, but other diners noticed. Richard DeAgazio was in the room and posted photos to Facebook. The photos appear to corroborate an important detail from

Human Rights Watch: Syrian forces used gas attacks as key part of campaign to retake Aleppo

the CNN report. “The patio was lit only with candles and moonlight, so aides used the camera lights on their phones to help the stone-faced Trump and Abe read through the documents,” Liptak writes. In one photo, you can see a phone flashlight being used. Phones — especially phones with their flashes turned on for improved visibility — are portable television satellite trucks and, if compromised, can be used to get a great deal of information about what’s happening nearby. One of the photos shows Trump using a phone at the table, within view of other diners. It’s not clear what phone Trump is using, but he uses a relatively old Android device. Shortly before the dinner with Abe, he tweeted from it. Democrats pointed to the security risks the scene seemed to pose. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wrote on Twitter, “There’s no excuse for letting an international crisis play out in front of a bunch of country club members like dinner theater.” The White House did not respond to requests for comment. White House ‘evaluating’ Flynn’s future POLITICS The White House broke its silence on the future of national security adviser Michael Flynn Monday in two conflicting statements. In the afternoon, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said President Trump is “evaluating the situation” involving Flynn. Spicer said Trump was speaking with Vice President Mike Pence and others about the matter. Earlier Monday, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Flynn has Trump’s backing. “He does enjoy the full confidence of the president,” Conway said. Questions have surrounded Flynn in the wake of reports that he misled senior officials about his contacts with Russia in December, before Trump took office. Flynn apologized privately to Pence for the controversy, according to an administration official. Pence, relying on information from Flynn, publicly vouched that the retired Army lieutenant general did not improperly discuss sanctions with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. Flynn has since told the White House that sanctions may have come up in the calls. Flynn sat in the front row of Trump’s news conference Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Flynn matter did not come up during the conference. As he left the room, Trump ignored journalists’ shouted inquiries about Flynn’s status. (AP/TWP)

California dam stabilized

Evacuees might not return home until hole in spillway is repaired

WASHINGTONPOST.COM SPEAKING OF SCIENCE

RANDY PENCH (THE SACRAMENTO BEE VIA AP)

OROVILLE, CALIF. Nearly 200,000 people who were ordered to leave their homes out of fear that a spillway could collapse may not be able to return until the barrier at the nation’s tallest dam is repaired, a sheriff said Monday. Officials from the California Department of Water Resources were considering using helicopters to drop loads of rock onto the eroded spillway at Lake Oroville, about 150 miles northeast of San Francisco. Meanwhile, the water level behind the dam dropped, easing slightly the fears of a catastrophic spillway collapse. As of Monday, officials said water was flowing out of the lake at nearly twice the rate as water flowing into it. But with more rain expected Wednesday and Thursday, time was running short to fix the damage ahead of the storms. Authorities ordered mass evacuations Sunday for everyone living below the lake out of concern that the spillway could fail and send a 30-foot wall of water roaring downstream. About

Water continues to run down the main spillway at Lake Oroville in Northern California on Monday.

188,000 residents of Yuba, Sutter and Butte counties were ordered to evacuate. Nancy Borsdorf described a scene of chaos on her way out of Oroville, including drivers abandoning cars as they ran out of gas in bumper-to-bumper traffic. “People were just panicking,” said Borsdorf, who was at a shelter Monday in Chico. The water level in the lake rose significantly in recent weeks after storms dumped rain and snow across California, particularly

in northern parts of the state. The high water forced the use of the dam’s emergency spillway Saturday for the first time in the dam’s nearly 50-year history. Sunday afternoon’s evacuation order came after engineers spotted a hole in the earthen secondary spillway for the 770-foot-tall Oroville Dam and told authorities that it could fail within the hour. Unexpected erosion had chewed through the main spillway, sending chunks of concrete flying and creating a 200-foot-long,

30-foot-deep hole that continues to grow. The acting director of the Department of Water Resources, Bill Croyle, said officials will be able to assess the damage to the emergency spillway now that the lake level has come down. The sudden decision Sunday to evacuate tens of thousands of people was a departure from earlier assurances, when officials had stressed that the Oroville Dam itself was structurally sound. OLGA R. A suicide bomber struck police escorting a protest rally Monday, killing at least 13 people and wounding nearly 60 in an attack claimed by a Taliban splinter group. The blast ripped through the crowd of hundreds of pharmacists, who were protesting a law governing drug sales. Six police officers, including a former provincial counterterrorism chief, were among those killed, police said. (AP)

Jerry Sandusky’s son Jeffrey Sandusky, 41, was charged Monday with sex crimes involving two girls, more than five years after the former Penn State assistant coach was himself first arrested on child molestation charges. Police accused Jeffrey of soliciting naked photos from a then-16-year-old girl last year and seeking oral sex in 2013 from her then-15-year-old sister. (AP)

A dating app that launched Monday asks a lot of its clients: They have to speak by phone for at least 5 minutes with the person of interest before any other contact. Mashable reports that Hotline (so far available only for iOS in New York) sees that oftenawkward first live contact as a filter, perhaps streamlining the process in the long run. Also, users are limited to three matches at a time. (EXPRESS)

Diamonds born in a lab compete to be loved, too At a drab office park in a D.C. suburb, in an unmarked building’s windowless lab, Yarden Tsach grows diamonds. Not rhinestones or cubic zirconia. Real diamonds. In just eight weeks, inside a gas-filled chamber, he replicates a process that usually takes billions of years in the bowels of the planet. No outsiders witness this work. WD Lab Grown Diamonds, where Tsach is chief technology officer, guards its approach as zealously as its address. The lab has fierce competition. Nearly a dozen companies worldwide produce diamonds that are all but indistinguishable from mined stones — good enough for any engagement ring or Valentine’s Day gift. Four more companies focus solely on diamonds for use in factories and research labs. Sales of lab-grown stones make up about 1 percent of the global commercial diamond market, but a 2016 report from Morgan Stanley suggested that proportion could jump to 7.5 percent before 2020. In one unlikely scenario, analysts said, lab diamonds might become so ubiquitous that the entire traditional market collapses. After all, that market depends on sentiment and scarcity. Lab-grown jewels shatter that illusion, and cost an estimated 10 percent to 40 percent less. But are they just as swoonworthy? SARAH KAPLAN

WELCOME TO TOWN

Nats bolster bench with Adam Lind

Veteran first baseman says position players don’t need 7 weeks MLB Early in his career, Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman received a piece of advice from a veteran relief pitcher. He can’t remember who it was from, but the wisdom of the message stayed with him. “The best way to get through spring training is not to work out at all in the offseason,” Zimmerman recalled. “Put your cleats on and stand in your driveway and drink a six-pack of beer.” Zimmerman, 32, laughed at the retelling, but the advice contained a kernel of logic. Ballplayers report in peak physical condition after a winter of refined workouts often overseen by professional trainers. And then, for the first week or so — before the month of irrelevant exhibitions — they shag batting practice fly balls or cycle into drills practicing bunt plays and rundowns.

“Silly things like that, everyone does just to say that they did it,” Zimmerman said. “Then everyone’s back is jacked up from standing around doing nothing.” For most players, spring training brings the tedium of mindless drills and meaningless games. It is an anachronism almost entirely for the benefit of around 12 people per club. Teams do not need it to make money. Position players do not need most of it to prepare for the season. But pitchers, especially starters, need two months in a warm locale to build stamina and strength slowly enough to limit injury risk. Because of those pitchers, 30 teams will spend about seven weeks — including an extra week this year to accommodate the World Baseball Classic — and more than 30 games preparing to play another six months. “For me as a position player, it’s unnecessary,” Zimmerman said. According to Zimmerman, he needs 60 to 75 at-bats, about two weeks’ worth,to feel ready. w

JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Zimmerman: Long spring ‘unnecessary’ Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman knows he’s lucky to be a pro athlete but gets frustrated by the injury risks and tedium of spring training.

Pitchers progress slowly In the 11 days before spring training games begin, pitchers throw three heavily monitored bullpen sessions. In their first live action, they throw around 25 pitches over an inning or two. Their next start will last about 40 pitches over three innings. The ramping-up continues until they have made four or five starts, meaning that teams must play 30 or so games to accommodate their schedules. A.K.

He said the rest of the time is spent either trying not to get hurt, “which is a terrible way to play sports,” or attempting to

focus as if it’s the regular season. That’s tough to do when only 2,000 people are in the stands and he has no scouting report for an unknown pitcher on the mound. Zimmerman knows he’s lucky to play baseball and that he may come off as a spoiled athlete. Really, it’s professional frustration. “Everything down there is the exact opposite of the regular season,” he said. And so, as images of cloudless udless skies and infield drills warm fans’ hearts, remember:: The players will be wishing to get it over with. Or at leastt that they had spent more time wearing cleats in their driveway. eway.

As pitchers and catchers arrived in West Palm Beach, Fla., ahead of their official reporting date today, the Nationals made a significant addition to their bench. Washington agreed to terms Monday with power-hitting lefty Adam Lind, according to a person familiar with the situation. The deal, which becomes official once Lind passes a physical, will pay Lind $1 million in 2017 and includes a club option for 2018. Lind, 33, would serve as the fourth outfielder and backup first baseman, likely bumping Clint Robinson from the opening day bench. In 126 games with Seattle last year, Lind hit 20 home runs. He has six 20-homer seasons, including three of the past four. (TWP)

it had been earlier in the season. Trotz would later point to that long break as one of the factors for Washington slipping as it approached the playoffs. Trotz also said that if multiple teams in the same division had the same bye week, they could easily play each other right after it. That would make for relatively light travel out of the break, too. The World Cup of Hockey coupled with the bye week has meant teams have had fewer days off between games, making the 82-game schedule especially crammed this season. The Capitals practice Friday, then play back-to-back afternoon road games against the Red Wings and Rangers coming out of the bye. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN

CAPITALS By Sunday afternoon, the Capitals were scattered across various beaches, already enjoying their five-day bye week before they have to resume practice Friday. New this year because the World Cup of Hockey took place right before the season, each NHL team gets this break at a different point in the schedule. If it were up to Capitals coach Barry Trotz, he would tweak the schedule for the byes. “I think it’s good,” Trotz said earlier this month. “Obviously, it’s the first try at it. But I think when you come out of the bye week, the first couple games that you play should be teams that are having the bye week at the same time with you because I think your level of play and where you are after a couple games, it’s different.” Trotz’s concern stems from how Washington handled a long break last season. A January snowstorm caused two games to be postponed and that, coupled with the All-Star break, meant the Capitals played just two games in two weeks. Washington still won the Presidents’ Trophy, but it wasn’t the dominant force

The Nuggets and Trail Blazers completed a trade Sunday that didn’t appear to make many waves. Denver sent center Jusuf Nurkic and the Grizzlies’ 2017 first-round pick to Portland for big man Mason Plumlee and the Grizzlies’ 2018 second-round pick. Here’s why the move actually mattered. TIM BONTEMPS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Portland is giving up The Trail Blazers (23-31) entered Monday in ninth place in the West. The trade makes them worse while making Denver, the team in eighth, better. It seems like Blazers General Manager Neil Olshey is looking to the future — specifically a talent-rich 2017 draft in which he now has three first-round picks.

Plumlee trade has ramifications beyond this year

XX740c 1x4

In the offseason, Portland signed free agent Evan Turner and re-signed four players, including C.J. McCollum. A new deal for Plumlee, who’ll be a restricted free agent this summer, could cost around $17 million per year. Portland owes Nurkic roughly $3 million next season, but after the trade, they’re still more than $10 million over the expected luxury tax line and still need a starting center.

Denver’s work isn’t done The Nuggets want to build around center Nikola Jokic, a wonderful passer and scorer who struggles defensively. Plumlee’s skill set is identical, so it’s hard to see how they will form a frontcourt that can defend well enough to work out.

Roam Fitness at BWI is the only gym at a U.S. airport that is past security.

Airport gyms take off TRAVEL Work out while waiting for your flight? That’s now an option at Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport, which has the only full gym at a U.S. airport that’s past security: Roam Fitness opened at the end of last month and has plans to open 20 more at other airports by 2020. It’s the latest example of how fitness and health trends have started showing up at airports. Yoga rooms and walking tracks have opened at airports around North America over the past few years, and healthier food options are also easier to find in airports. The Roam Fitness gym at BWI includes an attendant who monitors guests’ flights and will alert them if there’s a delay. There are even showers, luggage storage and options for renting Lululemon and Brooks workout clothes and shoes. Fees range from $40 a day to $175 a month. The concept was initially envisioned for international travelers

and others with long layovers, but research revealed that many others wanted to squeeze in a workout before or after landing. “A lot of people coming from the West Coast taking red-eye flights are going straight to their business meeting but they land at 6:30 in the morning. They can’t check into their hotel yet … so it just gives them the opportunity to clean up before they head to that meeting,” says Roam Fitness CEO Cynthia Sandall. Roughly 4,000 travelers a month use GoodLife Fitness’ gym at Toronto airport, a 33 percent

A healthy layover While airports sell plenty of greasy fast food, many airport eateries also now feature local, organic ingredients and vegan and glutenfree options. Icebox Cafe at Miami International Airport, which uses locally sourced food, reported above-average sales of $3.1 million last fiscal year. Other examples of healthier fare at airports include Nature’s Table in Atlanta and Orlando, Fla., Elephants Delicatessen at Portland International Airport in Oregon, and French Meadow Bakery, in four airports including Minneapolis and Salt Lake City. increase from when it opened in 2014, the company says. But the concept may not work everywhere. Christopher Berger, who chairs the American College of Sports Medicine task force on healthy air travel, says the gyms’ success may depend on the location, with gyms being best suited for hubs with long layovers. “You take someplace like [Chicago] O’Hare, Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle. ... I think you’ve got a real chance of selling it,” he says. At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, there’s a yoga studio with free mats, a walking path and two 55-foot staircases for an extra cardio challenge. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has a 1.4-mile walking path. BWI also offers bike rentals and a 12.5-mile trail just outside the airport. Other amenities in the pipeline for major airports include movie theaters and more fine dining, says Lorraine Sileo, a senior vice president with travel market research firm Phocuswright. But fitness and wellness offerings are especially appealing to travelers getting on or off cramped planes. KELLI KENNEDY (AP)

Freezing temps are no excuse to give up on fitness. Indeed, a new study published in Scientific Reports found that people actively trying to shed pounds had the best results when the temperature dropped. The more inhospitable the weather, the more conscientious people became about keeping track of their meals and calories. Researchers tracked the weight loss of 3,274 people under 42 throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia for a year with Noom Coach, a fitness app that can pinpoint the location of users. They then used a meteorology service, called Weather Underground API, to monitor conditions, and discovered that colder temperatures and lower dew points as well as higher wind speed and precipitation were all linked to the app users’ weight loss. I can’t breathe, but how can I leave? Q. I am 36 and returned to live with my parents and grandmother after not being able to find work for two years. I since returned to school and am a semester away from my second master’s degree. I look forward to finding work and moving out, but I sense my parents are hoping I’ll stick around and help financially, physically and emotionally. My grandmother is getting weaker, my mother recently had surgery and my father is in his 70s but still has to work. I do all the errands and help pay the bills. I am suffocating in my small room and need my own place. However, I feel guilty for wanting to leave. SON WHO NEEDS SPACE

There are a lot of beautiful grays in between black and white. Helping your parents and grandmother physically, financially and emotionally does not necessitate sleeping in a too-small room or forsaking an independent life. Presumably, there are other housing options nearby; what would be reasonable in terms of a number of visits and errands per week? Automating some of the bill-paying? Contributing to an extra helper when the

time may come? Start communicating honestly. Avoiding the issue will only make you resentful (not a great look on a caregiver). Spell out clearly that you visualize having your own place but you will still be available for X, Y and Z. Yes, you may feel guilty. But if you can find a way to get some space while continuing meaningful support, you’ll feel much freer — and may even be better company when you’re with them.

life. He is amazing. But there is one thing we always argue about: alcohol. He is not an everyday drinker; he’s a “special occasion” drinker. When he drinks, he’s a completely different person who doesn’t care about anything. It’s very hard to reason with him, to the point where I want to leave him. I am not a drinker and am much younger than him, so he assumes I can’t have fun and enjoy myself. How could we overcome this? DON’T LOVE HIS DRINKING

Alcohol abuse can be a relationship killer, whether someone is an everyday drinker or not. In fact, people often falsely convince themselves they don’t have a problem because they are able to go a certain period of time without drinking. But it need not be about the frequency of someone’s drinking — it can also be about who they become when they do it. Clearly, he’s got a problem, and instead of looking at himself, he’s deflecting blame to your not being fun enough. (And since when does being younger mean being less able to enjoy oneself?) He may seem to be the love of your life, but I implore you to consider the long-term implications of being with someone you “always argue” with, especially when it’s because they refuse to take care of themselves or even acknowledge a problem that affects you both. entertainment Adele besting Beyonce exposes the awards show’s big problem PERSPECTIVE Each year on Grammy night, the Recording Academy plunges deeper into a dim trench of irrelevance, making it difficult to get too worked up over its chronic fumbles. But this year was different. When industry voters chose Adele’s conventional best-seller, “25,” over Beyonce’s provocative “Lemonade” for album of the year at Sunday’s awards, the ritual nonsense had curdled into something unacceptable. For the past five years, black artists have been making eradefining pop music, some of which has been nominated for the heaviest Grammy, album of

the year. Then, when “music’s biggest night” rolls around, each of these artists loses to a white act doing less-challenging, lesstimely, less-imaginative work. Check the tapes. Frank Ocean lost to Mumford & Sons in 2013. Kendrick Lamar lost to Daft Punk in 2014. Beyonce lost to Beck in 2015. Lamar lost again in 2016, this time to Taylor Swift. And on Sunday, at her creative peak, Beyonce lost to Adele. Go back even further, and you’ll see white artists have won album of the year for nine consecutive years. What are academy members voting for when they cast those ballots, anyway? Recognizable names? Creative visions? Booming sales? If the answer is “all of the above,” it’s hard to see how they passed on “Lemonade.” This wasn’t just a superstar’s sharpest

The Grammys reach peak irrelevance

On Sunday night, Beyonce, left, and Adele faced off in several categories at the Grammys, including the mightiest of all: album of the year.

work; it was also the third-highest-selling album of 2016. While collecting her award, Adele used her speech to expound on “Lemonade.” She described the album as “so monumental, and so well thought-out,

and so beautiful, and soul-baring.” Even after the band played her off, she kept on it. “I feel like it was her time to win,” Adele told reporters after the ceremony. “What the f--- does she have to do to win album of the year?”

That felt nice, hearing an industry darling scold the academy for making the wrong pick. But there’s really only one change we should hope to see at next year’s Grammys: fewer stars. Fed up with the Grammys’ perennial mishandling of black music, Frank Ocean protested this year’s awards by declining to submit his work for nomination. Other stars seemed to have followed his lead. On Sunday, Drake was on tour in England. Kanye West was nowhere to be seen. Even Justin Bieber sat it out. Next year, aggrieved artists should consider refusing to submit their work altogether. Their participation gives the Recording Academy more legitimacy than the Recording Academy could ever give them. CHRIS RICHARDS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

blog log “Hang in there and try to beat that taquito habit before it becomes a hard addiction that rules your life.” DONNA JO commenting sarcastically on a BuzzFeed article about Kansas teen Sarah Holder, whose neighbor mistook her holding a taquito for a cigarette. Holder shared the text message her neighbor sent her: “[Someone] noticed you drive past smoking a cigar of some sort. A lot of children live on the street. ... Keep your habits private from the kids!” The teen cheekily answered with a photo of herself holding her snack and the message “It was just a taquito! No bad habits here.”

The quote read: “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” There is no evidence that Lincoln ever said that, The New York Times reported.

MEDIUM

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Things may not go according to plan, but you can still come out ahead if you’re able to adjust quickly to changing circumstances. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re getting used to a situation that you don’t like and can’t change, but that’s better than being upset about it day after day. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You can introduce a friend or loved one to something that he or she will take to very quickly. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) One step at a time gets you where you want to go. There’s no reason to hurry and risk committing an error. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You are eager to see where a relatively new relationship may go — but are you ready to admit your true feelings?

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

CANCER (June 21-July 22) How you view a situation says more about you than it does about the situation. Others may be reluctant to follow you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A look back allows you to track your progress, and that in turn will add value to the position you currently find yourself in. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You must take some time to assess a situation more honestly than you ever have. There’s no room for self-deception.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Putting another’s needs before your own allows you to achieve a rare balance between what works and what doesn’t.

TODAY: Gentle winds are a welcome change of pace on a sunny, seasonable February day. After a cold start, highs will reach the mid-40s and top out at 50. Towards the evening, skies will be partly cloudy. Lows will range from the upper 20s in our colder suburbs to the mid-30s downtown. Expect light winds.

CeeLo Green was sick of CeeLo Green When CeeLo Green showed up to Sunday’s Grammys decked out in an all-gold ensemble, including a helmet covering his whole face, social media users wondered what it was all about. Green responded on Twitter, simply tagging @GnarlyDOfficial, aka Gnarly Davidson. According to Complex, Davidson is Green’s new musical alter ego. In December, as Davidson, he put out a song and music video called “F--Me, I’m Famous.” (EXPRESS)

Derek Jeter’s wife, Hannah, announced they are expecting their first child together, a girl. The Sports Illustrated swimsuit star revealed the news Monday in an essay on her husband’s website, The Players’ Tribune. The announcement includes a photo of the 42-year-old Yankees legend holding a bouquet of pink balloons. Hannah Jeter also said Derek already has a name picked out, but she hasn’t settled on it yet. She wrote: “Whatever her name is, I know she’ll run circles around him.” The 26-year-old added they want their “kids’ lives to be as ‘normal’ as possible” because “they’re going to be born into such an extraordinary situation.” (AP)

Mischa Barton crashed a U-Haul at new apartment

At this point, just cancel the Grammys next year

While moving from her former residence in West Hollywood to a new apartment building in the same area, Mischa Barton crashed the U-Haul truck she was driving. According to TMZ, the actress and reality star “misjudged the height of the carport and the top of the U-Haul slammed into the overhead support.” She was reportedly shaken up afterwards. (EXPRESS)

After Adele beat Beyonce in the top categories at Sunday’s Grammys, Beyonce’s sister and artist Solange threw some shade at the awards. In a since-deleted tweet, she wrote, “Waddup frank” along with a link to Frank Ocean’s blog post on the Grammys’ “cultural bias” in snubbing black artists year after year. Ocean notably did not submit his album “Blonde” for Grammy consideration and sat out of the ceremony. (EXPRESS)
