U.S. Vows Full Probe of Marines

Video of purported desecration threatens Taliban peace talks

AP

MWi^_d]jed The Obama administration Thursday strongly condemned a viral video that depicts four Marines desecrating corpses, as U.S. officials tried to prevent a popular backlash in Afghanistan and forestall damage to nascent peace talks with the Taliban. As the purported images of Marines urinating on three bloodied bodies circulated around the globe, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta denounced the video as “utterly deplorable” and called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to assure him the incident would be thoroughly investigated. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed “total dismay” at the behavior by Marines. Army Gen. Martin E.Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the actions “erode the reputation of our joint force.” Pentagon officials said they were

7 <ehY[ je 8[ H[Yaed[Z M_j^ While Ron Paul is unlikely to win the GOP nomination and young voters make up a relatively small slice of the electorate — 12 percent in the New Hampshire primary and 15 percent in the Iowa caucuses — their lopsided support has made Paul a force to be reckoned with in the 2012 campaign. And it could prompt a more serious consideration of his views by Republicans and Democrats alike. (AP)

CWdY^[ij[h" D$>$ A 76-year-old great-grandfather who gives eye-glazing speeches on monetary policy, displays a crotchety streak and disappears from the Republican campaign trail for days at a time to rest is captivating young voters. Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s libertarian message of less government, personal liberty and ending U.S. military involvement overseas clicks with young people, who are supplying zest for his stronger-than-expected presidential campaign. Nearly half of all voters under 30 went for Paul in the first two states to vote, helping to propel him to a secondplace finish in the New Hampshire primary and third place in Iowa’s

leadoff caucuses. Why would young people gravitate to the oldest guy in the field? “Freedom is a young idea,” says Eddie Clearwater, a 22-yearold Des Moines photographer who attended a Ron Paul party in Ankeny, Iowa, earlier this month. “All of his policies are such a good, radical change. It’s what we need.” Paul’s campaign events are charged with an energy that any politician would love, attracting an eclectic band of youthful activ-

ists. Paul’s critics sometimes poke fun at his popularity with that age group, suggesting they are mainly attracted to his anti-war message and support for liberalizing drug laws, which are both far outside the Republican mainstream. But the stereotypes belie the reality facing young people. Paul’s young supporters say they fear a bleak future of joblessness, steep college loan payments, pandering politicians and a government made sluggish by debt. BETH FOUHY (AP)

India Scores Victory Over Polio One full year passes with no new cases of the crippling disease

Union Threatens to Close Oil Production in Nigeria A major union threatened Thursday to stop the beating heart of Nigeria’s economy — crude oil production — as part of a nationwide strike and protests gripping Africa’s most populous nation. World oil prices climbed on the news. Nigeria is the fifth-largest oil exporter to the U.S., and a shutdown would force American refineries to replace 630,000 barrels per day of crude. (AP) 8;?HKJ

Journalist’s Death Brings Calls for Probe in Syria The death of French journalist Gilles Jacquier in Syria brought new calls Thursday for an independent investigation of the violence in the country after a series of mysterious attacks since December killed scores of people despite the presence of Arab League monitors. (AP)

On Friday, India is set to reach a major milestone in the global battle against polio, recording a full year without a single case of the virus in the country that was long its epicenter and its biggest exporter. It is a massive global public health achievement that has defied the odds and confounded the skeptics, a victory — reached with U.S. financial support and expertise — that will see India removed forever from the list of just four countries where the crippling disease remains endemic. The other three countries are Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. The feat raises the very real chance that polio, like smallpox, could one day be consigned to history. Until 1995, India recorded between 50,000 and 150,000 cases of polio each year. In 2009, 14 years into India’s campaign to eradicate polio, 741 Indian children still contracted the incurable disease, more than anywhere else in the world, and

A child is given her first polio vaccination Thursday at a health camp in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. In two years, the country could be declared free of the virus.

8WYaijeho When the World Health Organization launched the global campaign to eradicate polio in 1988, the virus was paralyzing 1,000 children around the world every day, nearly half of them in India. But it took seven years before India’s government mustered the political will, resources and manpower to act. And even when India finally began its first mass vaccination campaign in 1995, the hurdles seemed almost insurmountable, especially in the desperately poor, astonishingly overcrowded plains of northern India, where illiteracy was rife; malnutrition and disease rampant; and hygiene and public sanitation terribly inadequate. To make matters worse, rumors spread through the massive Muslim population of the region that the vaccination campaign was an American conspiracy to wipe them out, by making their sons impotent and their daughters infertile. morale was sagging. In 2010, that number had fallen to 42. In 2011, it fell to just a single case. In about a month, barring any last-minute shocks from tests already under way, the Independent Monitoring Board, a panel of global polio experts, is expected to remove India from the list of polio-endemic countries. It will take another two years to declare it completely free of the virus, but even a setback now would not derail the program. Anuradha Gupta, a joint secretary in India’s health ministry, said the mood was now one of hope, optimism and enthusiasm, but not smugness, given the risks the disease could still find a way back from abroad. “We needed this kind of success to keep morale up and to enhance public confidence in the program,” she said. “We do now feel it is possible, it is doable.” SIMON DENYER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

You know how riding Metro sometimes takes a little longer than planned? Em Hall does. The 32-yearold Washingtonian set out to visit every Metro station and ride every Metrobus route in a year for her blog, Metro-Venture. It’s been two years since her quest began, but, finally, the end is in sight. With fewer than 10 stations left to hit and enough bus rides under her belt that she’s worried there’s just not much more to say, Hall’s looking to wrap it up by the end of February. The delay, she admits, was her own fault. The map didn’t seem so daunting, and she’s an adventurous gal who’s willing to go out of her way to explore new neighborhoods. What she hadn’t factored in was that it would be much easier to get around downtown than to trek to all of the Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Although she won’t be updating the blog anymore, it won’t completely disappear. Hall figures her entries — which typically include a description of where the station or route is (or goes), who’s there, what’s nearby and a sense of the general vibe — will still be useful

to readers, and she plans to update the site when the Silver Line and streetcars debut. And what certainly won’t go away is her appreciation for Washington and its transit system. “I think about the city totally differently now and about how things are connected,” she says. “Some folks know one way to get somewhere. I have at least two or three other routes I can take.” Her encyclopedic knowledge of the bus network combined with the NextBus app means Hall can hop around to get absolutely anywhere. Her record: 10 rides in a day. Along the way, she’s studied patterns of rider behavior. “People in Arlington queue up for buses. I don’t know why,” says Hall, who’s noticed this at the Pentagon and along the Columbia Pike corridor

but nowhere else in the region. Riders on the express bus routes tend to be the least talkative. For a good conversation, she suggests opting instead for a route with a lot of older riders on a weekend. Searching for bad etiquette? You won’t have to look hard. “There are always people who won’t get up for pregnant women or old people,” she says. Hall, the marketing manager at Zipcar in D.C., has kept her SmarTrip bill lower than you might expect with her scheduling strategy — trains on weekends and evenings, buses at peak fare times. “I have a ridiculous number of bus stop Four Square mayorships, though,” she says. “And I’ve spent way too much time running after things.” She’s never gotten lost or felt like she’s been in any danger. And despite having to walk up a few broken escalators and to wait for way too long at certain bus stops, Hall’s still a transit fan. “I’d pick Metro over any other form of transportation,” she says. So even though her Metro-Venture is almost over, her journey continues.

JWa[ Hekj[i Part of Hall’s not-so-hidden agenda with the blog (Emilyhaha.com) was to promote bus riding. Here are three routes she recommends. H2,3,4-Crosstown Line. The route connects the two sides of the Red Line by heading between Brookland and Tenleytown. It’s like the Purple Line, but in the city. 80-North Capitol Street Line. “I have a love-hate relationship with the 80,” Hall says. But she knows she’ll always have an adventure somewhere between Fort Totten and the Kennedy Center. 60,64-Fort Totten-Petworth Line. This bus takes 11th Street through town, which was a pleasant surprise for Hall. “There are amazing circles up there that have these scenic parks,” she says.

Gray: NPS Should Remove Occupiers D.C. cites health risks as reason to clean up McPherson Square MWi^_d]jed Mayor Vincent C. Gray called on the National Park Service on Thursday to remove protesters from McPherson Square to “allow for elimination of the rat infestation, cleanup, and restoration” of the downtown park. In a letter to Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis, Gray suggests moving the McPherson protesters to a separate encampment at Freedom Plaza. The letter was accompanied by a memorandum from the city’s

health director reporting that both encampments are at risk for outbreaks of “communicable disease, hypothermia or food borne illness.” Mohammed N. Akhter reported that the city “must now reassess and take steps to protect the health and safety of the demonstrators, as well as District residents and visitors.” The memo followed several dozen visits to the encampments. The McPherson Square site, Akhter said, “has some serious concerns that should be addressed immediately.” In his letter, Gray reiterated his requests for reimbursement for the costs incurred by the protests. Customers line up at food trucks at Farragut Square in Washington in October 2010.

D.C. Planning Stricter Food Truck Regulations MWi^_d]jed PROUD SPONSOR:

Academic

Kristi Whitfield, proprietor of Curbside Cupcakes and executive director of the D.C. Food Truck Association, said she was told this week by the D.C. police department’s lead vending enforcement officer that “heightened enforcement” of the city’s vending laws “are going to be a top priority” starting Friday. “The question is, why?” she said. “We know new regulations have been written. Why is MPD being directed to enforce something this administration has already deemed to be irrelevant?” The current vending rules are aimed at ice-cream trucks and the like, and prevent mobile food businesses from remaining in one location for a period of time without a line of customers present. The new regulations would likely change that.

8WYaijeho The story behind this is ongoing uncertainty about the regulation of food trucks, which are under fire from the brick-and-mortar restaurants they compete with. New regulations governing the operations of food trucks have been drafted but not yet approved. (T WP)

But there appears to be some movement: A senior aide to Mayor Vincent C. Gray, a Democrat, said Thursday that the new regulations will be published in the Jan. 20 edition of the D.C. Register. Helder Gil, a lawyer and spokesman for the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, said a 30-day public comment period will follow. M I K E D E B O N I S (THE WASHINGTON POST

Lessons From Air Florida MWi^_d]jed This month and next, more than 2,600 jetliners will thunder down the same runway by the Potomac bound for the balmy Florida sunshine. If you are on board one of them, escaping Washington in winter, take heart that your departure is far safer than it would have been 30 years ago Friday, when a combination of blunders catapulted a plane from that runway into the 14th Street Bridge. The indelible chronicle of that snowy late afternoon began even as Air Florida Flight 90 sank into the Potomac River. A TV crew that had been stuck in trafďŹ c jumped out to ďŹ lm the horror and the heroism for which the day is remembered. The four people trapped by bridge trafďŹ c who died in their cars. The 74 people — three of them infants — killed in the crash. The survivor, Arland D. Williams Jr., who helped others escape the water, only to be sucked under himself. And the bystander, Lenny Skutnik, who dove into the freezing water to save a drowning woman. Five people aboard the plane survived. People who were touched by that day or caught up in its magnitude will remember most of that. Thirty years after the fact, the 2.5 million people who take off from Reagan National Airport this winter will do so in the belief that the history of Jan. 13, 1982, can’t be repeated. Experts say they’re right. The lessons of that day and advances in training and technology over three decades have contributed to the safest era in aviation history. Though the skies are not risk-free, there hasn’t been a U.S. airline crash that killed more than 50 people since 2001. National Transportation Safety Board investigators blamed the Flight

U.S. PARK POLICE

A fatal plane crash in D.C. 30 years ago ushered in a new era of flight safety

90 crash on a cockpit crew that didn’t use engine de-icing while awaiting takeoff and then relied on clearly dubious readings from instrument sensors that were clogged with ice. They said that although the captain, Larry Wheaton, and co-pilot, Roger Alan Pettit, were cockpit veterans, they didn’t have much experience with winter weather. And they said the plane sat on the taxiway too long, being pelted by snow and ice that fouled the critical leading edge of the wings as they hurtled down a runway that ended at the Potomac.

F_bej ;hheh Thirty years later, few of the 26,000 passengers who take off from National every day remember the details of the Flight 90 crash. But the people flying their planes do. “Within the air crew world, this is a well-known accident, said Jim Hookey, the resident expert on jet engines at the NTSB. It was not the weight of the ice,

J^[ jhWdiYh_fj The captain of a plane that taxied past as Flight 90 readied for takeoff commented to his crew, “Look at the junk on that airplane. Later he recalled: “Almost the entire length of the fuselage had a mottled area of snow and what appeared to be ice ... along the top and upper side of the fuselage above the passenger cabin windows. (TWP)

Conversation from the cockpit as Air Florida begins takeoff: CO-PILOT WATCHING INSTRUMENTS: “God, look at that thing. That don’t seem right, does it? Uh, that’s not right. PILOT: “Yes it is, there’s 80. CO-PILOT: “Naw, I don’t think that’s right. Ah, maybe it is.

Conversation in the cockpit as Air Florida struggles to get airborne: PILOT: “Come on forward ... forward, just barely climb. ... Stalling, we’re falling! CO-PILOT: “Larry, we’re going down, Larry. PILOT: “I know it. [Sound of impact.]

or the wait to take off, or the slush on the runway that caused the plane to crash. For reasons no one will ever know, two pilots failed to turn on heating systems that keep the idling jet engines warm. Without that heat, something — almost certainly ice — clogged engine openings that are essential to determining how much thrust those engines are generating. As a result, the cockpit instruments told the pilots the engines were generating far more power than they really were. Because of those bad readings, when the plane failed to gain altitude, the pilots didn’t realize that throwing the throttle open would give them more lift. That lesson, he said, has been learned throughout the industry. “Crews now are not hesitant to jam the throttle to save the plane, Hookey said. “There’s probably been a lot of airplanes that have been saved because of the errors that these guys made. ASHLEY HALSEY III (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Ravens believe QB will silence his critics and win a world title

Flacco, who turns 27 on Monday, didn’t play at a big-time college. He has never been named to the Pro Bowl, has never led the league in passes and has never been compared to many of the elite quarterbacks in the game today.

Fhe <eejXWbb Joe Flacco is the only quarterback in NFL history to reach the playoffs in each of his first four years. He’s 44-20 during the regular season with the Baltimore Ravens and 4-3 in the postseason. Despite his success, Flacco has found it easier to dodge blitzing linebackers than fend off his critics. Some say he’s not mobile enough in the pocket. Some question his decision-making under pressure. Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley took the bashing to another level, saying the Ravens won’t win a Super Bowl with Flacco “in this lifetime.” Flacco smirks at all this. After all, he’s one of only eight NFL starting quarterbacks still playing, and he intends to make the best of that situation Sunday when Baltimore (12-4) faces the Houston Texans (11-6) for the right to play in the AFC title game. When asked how it feels to generate such negative reviews, Flacco responded, “I don’t care. We’ve won a lot of games around here. This is the second year in a row we won 12 games. At the end of the day, do you see the criticism sometimes and say, ‘What the [heck] are they talking about?’ Yeah. But who cares?”

All he does is win, and that’s OK with Ravens coach John Harbaugh. After being drafted out of the University of Delaware, Flacco started in Game 1 of his first season when Harbaugh was a rookie head coach. Together, the team has made Baltimore the only team in the league to reach the playoffs in each of the past four years. Ravens linebacker Ray Number of interceptions Lewis, who has seen more Flacco threw this year, than a dozen quarterbacks tying a career high come and go since he arrived in 1996, believes Flacco can ta ke Ba lt imore to a world championship. “There’s something about Joe I’ve liked from Day One,” Lewis said. “You have to appreciate a young kid who comes out with The Ravens won the AFC, that much talent, and now you North thanks in no small see where his talent is going. BRONCOS (9-8) VS. PATRIOTS (13-3), 8 P.M., SATURDAY, CBS

If the Broncos stunned the football world — and they did everywhere outside of the Rockies — with their thrilling overtime victory against the Steelers, they could set the universe spinning out of control by beating the top-seeded Patriots. It could happen, too. New England isn’t nearly as strong as it was in winning three Super Bowls and going undefeated on its way to a fourth NFL title game. Although the Patriots went 13-3 to secure AFC home-field advantage this season, winning their final eight, they have major issues on defense. Plus, they’ve lost their last three postseason games: the 2008 Super Bowl to the Giants, then at home against the Ravens and Jets. In Tom Brady and the Pats’ favor, New England snapped Denver’s six-game winning streak in the Mile High City a month ago.

It’s anybody’s game with these 3 playoff contests

9Wd J_c J[Xem Ze _j W]W_d5 Are the Giants this year’s Packers (and, for that matter, the 2008 Giants)? Can Drew Brees be stopped? There are plenty of reasons to watch the second round of the NFL playoffs this weekend, but the most compelling is that each game should be competitive. We’ve already covered the Ravens-Texans game (page 10), so here are the key story lines to watch during the remaining three games. (E X PRES S/AP)

SAINTS (14-3) VS. 49ERS (13-3), 4:30 P.M., SATURDAY, FOX

GIANTS (10-7)-PACKERS (15-1), 4:30 P.M., SUNDAY, FOX

As NFL matchups go, this one is a classic: unstoppable offense against impenetrable defense. The second round of the playoffs begins Saturday in San Francisco, where one of the league’s top defenses — the 49ers yielded 229 points and ranked fourth overall in yards allowed, first against the run — takes on Drew Brees, left, and the Saints’ record-setting attack. If defense wins championships, as has been the theory in pro football for decades, the edge clearly belongs to the 49ers. Then again, the NFL hasn’t seen an offense as prolific as the Saints’, which set records for total yards on offense (7,474) and yards passing (5,347) this year.

The last time these two met in the playoffs at Lambeau, it was frigid, yet Giants QB Eli Manning outplayed Brett Favre, and New York won 23-20. For the Giants to replicate that, their pass rush must make Aaron Rodgers, right, uncomfortable. With their defense vastly improved since Green Bay’s 38-35 win on Dec. 4, that could happen. It’d better, or else it could get ugly. Consider that Rodgers had a 122.5 QB rating, the best single-season mark in NFL history, and is the only quarterback to ever pass for 4,000-plus yards and have six or fewer interceptions.

United Adds Attacker in Draft

IkdZWo F_YaÊ;c

With only one pick in the MLS SuperDraft, D.C. United had to make the most of it, and the club’s brass feels like it did just that. D.C. selected midfielder Nick DeLeon from the University of Louisville at No. 7 overall in Thursday’s draft, adding another young attacking piece to the team’s corps that includes the likes of wingers Chris Pontius and Andy Najar. “I think it’s a good day for D.C. United,” D.C. coach Ben Olsen said. “At No. 7, to get a kid with this much talent is very good.” A pacey player who is very technical and savvy with the ball at his feet, DeLeon projects to play on the wing for United, although Olsen said he could contribute up top as well. With Pontius still recovering from a broken leg and Austin da Luz not returning to the club,

— TERRELL STOGLIN, ON TERPS COACH MARK TURGEON’S TEACHING METHODS.

GAIL BURTON/AP

Trent Richardson led Alabama to the BCS title before declaring for the draft.

Mark Turgeon held the final stat sheet in his hand, looked down and scanned for a name. Terrell Stoglin: 20 points, pretty good game. But something was missing. “No assists,” the coach said. Stoglin, a sophomore guard, is the ACC’s leading scorer, perhaps Maryland’s most talented player, but also the one who keeps the coach up at night, wondering whether he’s getting through to him. He implores Stoglin to share the ball; to rein in his penchant for wild, ill-advised shots; and, for the love of James Naismith, to get back on defense. It goes beyond the court, too. On Wednesday night, Turgeon relegated Stoglin to the bench for the start of Maryland’s game against Wake Forest, an eventual 70-64 victory. It was Stoglin’s penance for some unrevealed misstep unrelated to basketball. Stoglin entered the game barely two minutes after the opening tip. “I’m trying to make Terrell

a man,” Turgeon said. “His parents are on board with it. There’s responsibilities outside of basketball that you have to do. We’ll see if it helps him. Nothing major. Just need the kid to grow up.” As a freshman, Stoglin thought then-coach Gary Williams was a

taskmaster. Then came Turgeon. “Coach Williams was on me a lot, but coach Turgeon seems to be on top of me about everything,” said Stoglin, who is likely to be back in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game against Georgia Tech. “I don’t say anything back. I just learn from it.”

Turgeon’s frustrations with the sophomore’s untethered play are tempered by the realization that sometimes he just has to let the kid play. Many of Stoglin’s points, particularly at key points late in games, have come when he is playing at his most carefree, dribbling frantically and pulling up to shoot when his eye catches the first glimpse of the basket. Yet Turgeon believes the Terrapins’ offense is more efficient, over a full 40 minutes, when Stoglin is selective with his shots and works to find opportunities for teammates. “I think the guys understand as a team that we need Terrell to score to be successful,” the coach said. “But when he’s not shooting as many, we look more like a team on offense, we’re executing more.” DEREK TURNER

Wideman Joins Ovechkin on All-Star Roster J^[ 9Wf_jWbi When Dennis Wideman’s phone rang Thursday afternoon and he saw it was General Manager George McPhee calling, the defenseman’s first thought wasn’t that he had been named to the NHL’s All-Star roster for the first time in his career. Far from it. Wideman assumed he had been traded. “I was pretty surprised,” Wideman said. “I got the call from George and think you guys all know — you’ve talked to George — he’s pretty even-keeled. When he called me, I was, like, ‘Oh, man, where am I going now?’”

Alex Ovechkin, left, and Dennis Wideman are the two All-Stars from the Caps.

Wideman is ranked fifth among NHL defensemen in scoring with 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in a season that began with the 28-yearold being uncertain about how his body would fare after he saw last year cut short with a leg hematoma. He’ll be joined at the marquee event by Alex Ovechkin, who was also a bit of a surprising selection. It has not been an ideal first half of the season for Ovechkin, who has 17 goals and 16 assists, and his 33 points rank him 48th in the league in scoring, but as some of the star left wing’s teammates acknowledged on Thursday, it’s not really an All-Star game without his

presence. This Capitals star has earned the honor in each of his five NHL seasons. Through the first half of the season, Backstrom has been Washington’s most consistent and best player, as well as the team’s leading scorer, with 42 points (13 goals, 29 assists). It’s likely that Backstrom’s exclusion from the list could be the result of questions surrounding his health. Backstrom has missed three games and hasn’t skated for six consecutive days because of the concussion he suffered when he was elbowed in the jaw by Calgary’s Rene Bourque on Jan. 2. There was a collective gasp when Season 4 of Bravo’s “The Rachel Zoe Project” debuted sans Brad Goreski, Zoe’s assistant known for his self-described “little bit of geek chic with a little bit of showgirl” style. No longer with Zoe, he’s back with his own show, “It’s a Brad, Brad World” (Bravo, Mon., 10 p.m.), and an upcoming book, “Born to Be Brad: My Life and Style, So Far” ($17, It Books, March). Why do another TV show? Initially, I didn’t want to. I wanted to focus on building my portfolio and getting my name out. But then I met with Shed Media, and, they were, like, “It’s an exciting point in your career, and people would love to see where you’re at. What if we show your firsts? What keeps other people from embracing that style bravery? It’s fear. People are afraid to stand out too much. Or they feel they don’t have the tools. They’re afraid of fashion because of the exclusivity of the fashion world in the past. But I think now anyone basically has a front-row seat to a fashion show; it’s my job to let people know it’s OK to experiment and play.

Is there still a difference in how straight men and gay men dress? The line is blurring. Five years or so ago, we finally started straight males taking from the gay community, style-wise. Now it’s kind of the reverse, and it’s blending a little bit. There’s been this push for a return to great tailoring and dressing like a gentleman. But the flip side to that is people wearing flannels, beanies and boots — to me, that’s just dressing Canadian.

Wash ($10, Heydudeskincare.com) has nothing to do with the Nickelodeon series about kids living on a ranch. Instead, the stuff aims to simplify a guy’s life by offering three uses in one bottle: body wash, shampoo and shave gel. The blue goo performed admirably in all uses. The bottle also claims to be infused with dual pheromones, which, the label says “can help you make ‘friends’ a lot faster.” At the very least, it will make you smell sweet and flowery, which some girls may dig.

I’ve been promoted to detective after almost a decade as a patrol officer. I’m happy to be rid of clunky, black cop shoes but stumped as to what would look good with the stylish pantsuits I’d like to wear. Regulations specify “professional, closed-toe shoes, with heels no greater than two inches high.” — K ATHY

Teensy Greensy Sound-Checkered HEADPHONES HAVE SAVED US FROM Bolt Bus mates’

too-loud convos and our Spinning instructor’s rabid enthusiasm for Ke$ha. And now, thanks to chicBuds’ Arts line of earbuds ($30, Chicbuds.com), we’ll be rescued from unfashionable iWhatever-listening, too. Three poppy patterns — zebra stripes, hot pink leopard print and blue graffiti, above — bring style to tuning out the world around you and just might make your boring smartphone case jealous.

Manolo says, ayyyy! You will be like Angie Dickinson, going undercover in the hot pants and go-go boots to bust the ring of white slavers!

TERRARIUMS — WITH THEIR bitty

plants, mini-mosses and near-microscopic garden gnomes — add both green space and hipness to your pad. West Elm’s new line of jars comes in both fishbowl-like open styles ($19-$29) and footed vessels (shown, $59-$69, all at West Elm stores or Westelm.com) to get you started as a shrunken garden-er. Just don’t use them to play evil overlord to a bunch of innocent ladybugs you capture and imprison.

It’s in the Bag IN AN IDEAL WORLD, we’d be jetting away from schizophrenic winter weather

to someplace with predictably balmy temperatures. But even though Bali or the Bahamas looks unlikely, this ethically made-in-Africa straw tote ($98, Beklina. com) features enough room for (cue beach backdrop) sunblock and a Kindle or (cue office backdrop) our laptop and a mammoth stack of pages to edit. Bags come in springy lilac, aqua or cocoa patterns to cheer us until the cherry blossoms pop.

Non-Extreme Makeover MILLIONS OF Eames chairloving, Victorian-chest lacquering home decor fiends may have feared that this week’s relaunch of Apartmenttherapy. com might have Disneyfied or messed up the site’s scrappy-meets-chic vibe. But the mega nesting blog just got prettier and more organized, meaning addictive house tours boast bigger photos and the DIY tips archive is easier to search. =hWX 8W] _i ]Wj^[h[Z WdZ h[l_[m[Z Xo@[dd_\[h 8Wh][h$ <_dZ ceh[ \eeZ" \Wi^_ed" X[Wkjo WdZ ^ec[ ]eeZi Wj [nfh[iid_]^jekj$Yec%]hWXXW]$

Or perhaps not. The new version of the police lady life, as shown on the network TV, seems to involve less of the fistfighting and more of the science. One minute, you are flirting shamelessly with the witty Simon Baker, and the next you are poking the decomposing corpse with the spoon. Or perhaps not. From what the Manolo has heard, the actuality of the copwoman in the real world is more mundane, involving overbearing bureaucracy, bad coffee at strange hours and close contact with reprehensible peoples who do not look like this week’s celebrity guest villain. Still, despite the fact that your boss looks more like the Ernest Borgnine than the Mark Harmon, there must be great satisfaction in knowing that you are performing the necessary and important job, protecting the weak and unwary from harm. Here is the Kaplan Pump from the Elie Tahari ($248, Zappos.com), the sharp shoe that will keep the evil-doers quaking in their much-lessattractive boots. Rebecca’s parents have always been history buffs. When they moved to Gettysburg, Pa., they “got into the pretty side of reenactment — balls and teas, not battlefields and blood, Rebecca says. “I got interested in it because I saw the pictures, and what girl doesn’t like to play dress-up? While most people might think a flowing white gown counts as dress-up, Rebecca took it a step further with a Civil War era-style gown that her mother had sewn for her. Rebecca’s mother and one guest also came in period dress. “My family’d never seen anything like it, Josh says. “It was really nice to have a wedding a bit different than you’re used to. This made it kind of neat, he says. Though Josh has participated in reenactment balls before, he got off easy for the wedding: “I’m glad she didn’t make me [dress up], he says. “I wore a Men’s Wearhouse suit. Rebecca's mother sewed this Civil War-era gown for her to wear as a wedding dress.

She assumed he was making a professional announcement and had somehow gotten Synetic’s permission to do so. For the play, the stage was covered in six inches of water, so her nice shoes got soaked. “I assumed [the water] would be lukewarm. “In the Land of Blood and Honey” marks Angelina Jolie’s debut as both a screenwriter and a director.

I certainly hope I appear cool when I interview celebrities. Because, trust me, I am not. This week I got a few hours’ notice that I would be interviewing Angelina Jolie. In person. Suddenly, my regular interview prep got two additional steps — namely, figuring out how to lose 20 pounds and get a haircut in about four hours. This is not the first time an interview has made me nervous. Minutes before interviewing Gary 8o Ah_ij[d Oldman in person, FW][#A_hXo both of my arms went completely numb, which was amusing in a “Hey, look! A stroke!” kind of way. My brain joined in on the fun, screaming, “HOLY [expletive], THAT IS GARY OLDMAN! RIGHT THERE!” as he was answering a question. While I was on the phone with Colin Firth, my hands shook so badly I couldn’t take notes (good thing I was recording the call). It’s not just movie stars — I got dizzy before interviewing directors Errol Morris, Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog. And if you don’t get at least a little twitterpated when talking with someone who helps create something you love, then you don’t really love that thing. I love movies. These people make movies, and for the most part, I am grateful and excited about the work they do. So I don’t feel bad that I dork out on Facebook and Twitter after an interview. I will, however, be better about getting regular haircuts. Read Kristen’s previous columns at: expressnightout.com/thereelist

On-the-Job Jitters

@eb_[ JWa[i 9^Wh][ With ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey,’ the actress and activist embraces a new role <_bc Angelina Jolie, who makes her directorial debut with “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” has no time for mean people on her set. “We chose [Dean Selmer as] the director of photography, who happens to be one of the most talented DPs, but also one of the nicest people,” Jolie says. “Every time the casting agent would call me from London and say, ‘We’ve met six actors,’ I’d say, ‘Who was nice?’” It was a deliberate choice. The film, which is about the Bosnian war that ran from 1992 to 1995, includes a number of emotionally brutal scenes— some of which depicted events

?d j^[ BWdZ e\ 8beeZ 7dZ >ed[o H Director: Angelina Jolie Stars: Zana Marjanovic, left; Goran Kostic, right In a Nutshell: During the Bosnian war, Danijel, a soldier fighting for the Serbs, re-encounters Ajla, a Bosnian who’s now a captive in the camp he oversees. Soon, their once-promising connection becomes ambiguous as their motives change.

close to what the actors themselves survived. “These are the people that we’re talking about,” Jolie says. “These people are going to have to re-create such a violent part of their history that if they are not of good hearts and able to be kind to each other, and if this crew is not sensitive to that, then it’s not going to work.” The film mainly takes place in a Serbian rape camp, where Ajla, a Muslim, (Zana Marjanovic) reconnects with Danijel (Goran Kostic), a man she dated before the war who is now the Serbian commander of the camp. Danijel keeps Ajla as his personal painter, but whether she’s his prisoner or his girlfriend isn’t clear — even to Ajla herself. The depiction of the camp and the crimes that occur there are among the most chilling in modern film.

Jolie’s charitable work is already well-known; she’s a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations and often concentrates her efforts on issues facing the world’s women. But making “In the Land of Blood and Honey” wasn’t a political statement on her part. “It was just a way for me to express a lot of the issues and themes — violence against women, lack of intervention — and it was also a way for me to learn more about a part of the world I felt a responsibility to learn more about,” she says. The film started, she says, as her “education” and eventually blossomed into the feature, which she also wrote. Having such control was a new experience: “As an actor, it’s always somebody else’s words; it’s somebody else’s direction. Out of anything I’ve done, this is the most true to who I am.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (E XPRESS)

;dYeh[" ;dYeh[0 Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars, left, both have six Grammy nominations, including album of the year. And now both acts will perform at the award show. The Recording Academy announced Thursday that Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson will also hit the stage at the 54th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 12. The Grammys will air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. (AP)

Can a performance be too good? Meryl Streep disappears so uncannily into former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” that her performance overpowers the movie it’s in — a perfectly executed triple axel that renders everything else just featureless ice. The problem is that filmgoers who come to “The Iron Lady” to see Streep in action will see only that: an actress at the top of her game, delivering a bravura performance — not a thoughtful, provocative portrait of one of the most consequential figures of the 20th century. That “The Iron Lady” fails on this count, of course, isn’t the fault of Streep but of director Phyllida Lloyd, who, with screenwriter Abi Morgan, has made a biopic that manages to be triumphalist and

É9edjhWXWdZÊ Bei[i 9edjheb <_bc H[l_[m “Contraband” is like an “Ocean’s Eleven” movie, minus the glamour. Taut and suspenseful for the most part, the thriller substitutes a wily, working-class Mark Wahlberg (as smuggler Chris Farraday) for George Clooney’s urbane con artist, Danny Ocean, and replaces the globe-trotting milieu of casinos and museums with a gritty, claustrophobic freight ship. Watching it leaves you feeling less buzzed than jittery and slightly nauseated. If the “Ocean’s” movies were martinis, “Contraband” is a thermos full of coffee. Actually, it’s more to keep Andy from being shot in the head by Ribisi’s Briggs. Playing against type, Ribisi makes for a compelling and unhinged villain. Briggs also threatens Chris’ wife (Kate Beckinsale) and his two young sons. A quick plan is thrown together to hop down to Panama and come back with a pile of counterfeit currency. THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN (PG, 107 minutes) Steven Spielberg has brought Tintin to the big screen, but not quite to life. From the film’s opening sequence, when Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) and his terrier, Snowy, find a rare model ship in a crowded outdoor flea market, every frame is jam-packed with gleaming surfaces and beguiling reflections. No sooner does Tintin barter successfully for the ship than two men try to steal it, sending Tintin and Snowy on an adventure that will take them from Europe to the high seas and North Africa. The story really gets rollicking when Tintin meets Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis), a dipsomaniacal seafarer who joins Tintin’s quest to find out why so many people are interested in his little model boat. On the surface, “The Adventures of Tintin” is unimpeachable, but the surface is where it stays. A .H. ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED (G, 87 minutes) Either you’re

As usual, Alvin (voiced by Justin Long) remains the chipmunks’ chief instigator while the three embark on an ocean-spanning trip with their beleaguered agent/parent, Dave (Jason Lee). The mischievous critter’s latest prank gets his fuzzy mates — and their adorable female counterparts, the Chipettes — tied up in a parasail that carries them off the starboard side of a cruise ship and onto a tropical island. The “Chipmunks” have a very loyal audience, and “Chipwrecked” serves up more of the derivative chaos that floats this franchise’s boat. SE AN O’CONNELL THE ARTIST (PG-13, 100 minutes) Capping off a year of movies dedicated to high-style nostalgia, “The Artist” arrives like the last, lightest profiterole on the croquembouche. “The Artist” opens in 1927, when the dapper Errol Flynn-esque film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) rules Hollywoodland as its reigning star, his million-dollar grin coming as easily as the waves of applause that

When George crosses paths with an eager newcomer named Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), he’s cast in the role of mentor (and maybe more); but when talking pictures become the order of the day, she quickly begins an ascent up stardom’s ladder, while George’s fortunes begin their inevitable slide. A.H. A DANGEROUS METHOD (R, 99 minutes) When the movie opens in 1904, a young woman named Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) arrives at a psychiatric hospital in Zurich, contorted in paroxysms of full-blown hysterics. She comes under the care of a young psychiatrist named Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), who follows the experimental techniques of a neurologist named Sigmund Freud. He begins to correspond with Freud (Viggo Mortensen), who, when they finally meet,

Matt must find a way to bond with his daughters, 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Shailene Woodley). “The Descendants” is an ode to emotional dissonance, wherein regret and antic humor can coexist and even share a drink; it’s a tricky tonal high-wire act that writer-director Alexander Payne pulls off with uncommon skill and aplomb. A.H. THE DEVIL INSIDE (R, 79 minutes) The

terror begins in Anytown, U.S.A., where Maria Rossi brutally killed two priests and a nun. Seems they were trying to evict a demon. Found not guilty by reason of insanity, Maria is sent to an asylum near the Tiber. Twenty years later, Maria’s now-grown daughter, Isabella, travels to Rome to visit her mom. Naturally, she’s making a documentary about the trip, so she drags along a video guy. Isabella

soon falls in with two young priests who are renegade exorcists. Naturally, the boys want to try their techniques on Maria. One problem, though: Sometimes a freshly exorcised fiend gloms on to an innocent bystander, turning him or her into a twisted, howling bag of hate. You can see where this is going, and the filmmakers can see that you can see. So they rush to the hideous yet hilarious

climax in little more than an hour and then pad the running time with the slowest-moving credits ever. MARK JENKINS THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (R, 158 minutes) Rooney Mara’s portrayal of punked-out cyber-genius Lisbeth Salander does much to advance the appeal of this spiky heroine, whose victimization at the hands of piggish Continued on page 22

John Hurt, right, enlists Gary Oldman, left, to uncover a suspected M16 mole in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” leads his visitor on a conversation that will last 13 hours. “A Dangerous Method” captures Jung and Freud’s budding mutual comprehension with the giddy sweep of a young romance. It may be Jung and Spielrein whose relationship becomes more erotically complicated, but the core of David Cronenberg’s film is the intellectual love story between two men whose six-year collaboration would shake and shape modern thought . A.H. THE DESCENDANTS (R, 115 minutes) George Clooney doesn’t put a foot wrong except on purpose in “The Descendants,” a pitch-perfect movie that threads a tiny needle between comedy and devastating drama. Clooney’s Matt King is the wealthy descendant of Hawaiian royalty, who, as the movie opens, is watching his wife, Elizabeth, lie comatose in a hospital bed after suffering a near-fatal boating accident. men and her subsequent avenging fury have made her a feminist avatar for the WikiLeaks era. Handsomely filmed and impeccably acted, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is at once satisfying and

underwhelming, a pristine, coolly atmospheric procedural thriller that comes to the party a tad overdressed in hype. The movie’s most unsettling scenes, a brutal rape and an equally torturous act of revenge, are staged by Fincher for maximum shock value. But for the most part, he plays down his stylistic signatures, allowing the performances to project the story’s most subtle meanings. A.H.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE — GHOST PROTOCOL (PG-13, 133 minutes) Hand it to Tom Cruise: Even on the cusp of the creaky age of 50, he still manages to do his own stunts, look studly in a suit and maintain perfect hair sweepage. “Ghost Protocol” possesses the requisite number of expertly choreographed “How’d they do that?” scenes, as well as some terrific supporting performances from “Mission:

Rather than strain so mightily to remind viewers of his still-rock-hard abs and bluesteel stare, Cruise is more than entitled to remind us that he can actually act. Ethan’s quarry — Russian nuclear launch codes — are about as retro as it gets. A.H. PARIAH (R, 86 minutes) This invigoratingly fresh, optimistic film plunges the audience into a world that’s both tough and tender, vivid and grim, drenched in poetry and music and pain and discovery. Adepero Oduye plays Alike, a 17-year-old trying to navigate the usual social and family tensions, but Alike confronts an extra obstacle: She’s gay, which places her outside the norms of the black community, many of her adolescent peers and mostly her own family. If Alike has trouble coming out at home, she’s just as confounded by a gay community defined by aggressive girls and their girlier counterparts. Director Dee Rees captures the angst and brimming brio of Alike’s journey with extraordinary sensitivity and observant wit, infusing an otherwise familiar coming-of-age tale with humor and style. A.H. SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (PG-13, 129 minutes) Victoriana buffs will not be amused by this film, but it’s a modest improvement on bad-boy director Guy Ritchie’s first tweaking of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective. Not because it’s more subtle: This sequel is just as profligate as its 2009 predecessor, with explosions, anachronisms and quick cuts. But the dialogue is a little sharper, and Holmes gets a worthy opponent in Professor Moriarty, a diabolical mastermind who has begun a series of bombings and assassinations, hoping to spark a “world war.” Robert Downey Jr. plays Holmes as brainy yet highly physical and keen on dressing up. Jude Law returns as Dr. Watson, Holmes’ famous sidekick. Holmes’ latest case nearly scrubs Watson’s wedding and ends the new couple’s honeymoon before it even begins. Holmes, the filmmakers wink, can’t bear to let Watson go. M.J. TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY (R, 130 minutes) “Trust no one, Jim,” the British spy chief known as Control says as the film opens. “Especially no one in the mainstream.” With those tantalizing words of advice — delivered by John Hurt — the game is deliciously afoot in Tomas Alfredson’s long-awaited adaptation of John le Carre’s Cold War-era spy novel. Jim Prideaux and his boss, Control, are both working for the British intelligence service, MI6, in 1973 as the film opens, when the Cold War is at its height and Control is certain that MI6 has been infiltrated by a mole. Control sends Jim to

A.H. WAR HORSE (PG-13, 146 minutes) Man’s inhumanity to man is examined through a boy’s mystical connection to a horse in “War Horse,” Steven Spielberg’s stirring, expertly manipulative adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel (which has already been adapted for a hit Broadway play). The plucky steed is named Joey, a playful thoroughbred colt admired from a distance by an English farm boy named Albert (Jeremy Irvine). When Albert’s father, Ted (Peter Mullan), unexpectedly buys Joey in a drunken impulse, the boy is overjoyed, training the horse to respond to

ish manipulations to a minimum in a movie that moves through its requisite stages — grief, acceptance, zany sight gags and healing — with smooth, entertaining efficiency. The title, by the way, is spoken twice by Mee’s 7-year-old daughter, Rosie, played by the beguiling Maggie Elizabeth Jones, whose scene-stealing cuteness proves to be one of the most likable things in a

movie that’s all about being liked. A.H YOUNG ADULT (R, 94 minutes) Mavis Gary, played with perfect pitch by Charlize Theron, is a 37-year-old divorced writer facing the cancelation of her popular series of young adult novels. Lonely and depressed, Mavis shuffles around her apartment in sweatpants, swilling booze, eating fast food, watching bad TV and having meaningless

his slightest whistle. When Ted’s landlord, Lyons (David Thewlis), demands funds he’s due, it looks as if the family will have to sell Joey — until Albert persuades him to plow an entire rocky field, to the amazement of the onlookers who gather to witness the feat. But Joey’s fate is far from secure: When World War I dawns, Ted does sell the horse, this time to the British forces. A.H. WE BOUGHT A ZOO (PG, 124 minutes) In “We Bought a Zoo,” Matt Damon plays Benjamin Mee, a widower who’s been alone with his kids for six months when he decides to upend their lives and buy a broken-down zoo in Southern California. Based on the real-life Mee’s actual memoir, “We Bought a Zoo” contains all the ingredients of a maudlin, treacly weeper (“Dozens of Marleys and Three Mees”). Happily, writer-director Cameron Crowe keeps the most mawk-

D[m É:odWc_j[Ê <_ppb[i An animated remake of the hit 2004 indie flick is poorly timed Fh[c_[h[i Aside from its more obvious shortcomings (dull; unfunny), Fox’s new Sunday night cartoon “Napoleon Dynamite” makes a critical error in popcultural calculus: It’s been nearly eight years since the charmingly weird movie version took theatergoers by surprise with its portrait of the banal life of an oddball teenager in the rural West. “Napoleon Dynamite” became a sure but steady hit, culminating in a whole lot of “Vote for Pedro” ringer-T’s back in 2004. Kids walked around bragging, Napoleon-style, about their nunchuck skills. But eight years is both too long to capitalize on an initial trend and yet too soon to partake in a 2004 retro movement. Nostalgia for the early-to-mid ’00s doesn’t exist yet, IKD

Jon Heder and Aaron Ruell reprise their respective roles as Napoleon, left, and Kip, right, in the cartoon adaptation of the 2004 film “Napoleon Dynamite.”

so what’s “Napoleon Dynamite” doing here in 2012? Overseen by the film’s director and with the main characters being voiced by their original actors (including Jon Heder), “Napoleon Dynamite” arrives entirely intact: Napoleon still attends high school in a year that could be 1983 or 1995 or 2000-something. Part of the quirkiness of this story is that you never quite know when it takes place,

which is meant to approximate the backwater quality of life in a small Idaho town called Preston, which exudes a vaguely Mormonland vibe of out-of-the-loopness. While animation liberates Napoleon and his world from the usual physical restrictions, it somehow lessens the overall appeal of the character and setting. Perhaps he’s best left where we found him. No Holding Back Ricky Gervais returns to host the “Golden Globe Awards” (Sun., 8 p.m., NBC), as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association salutes its favorites in film and television. In movies, “The Artist” leads the pack with six nominations, followed by “The Help’’ and “The Descendants.” New series are well-represented on the TV side, with nominations for “American Horror Story,” “Homeland,” and “New Girl.” (TM)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may have a move in the works, but only so much can be done before others do their part. It’s time to get a piece of missing info. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Jump to conclusions and you’ll be endangering much that you have been working for in recent days and weeks. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) What goes around comes around, so you can expect to deal with certain things that you have anticipated. ARIES (March 21-April 19) What impresses you about another’s work is likely that very thing that you have by which others are, in turn, impressed. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) It’ll be over soon — it’s these four words that can see you through a difficult time. By day’s end, you’ll feel like you’re in the clear.

Yesterday’s Solution

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) It’s important to collect information the moment it becomes available — or as soon as possible. Don’t let it become stale. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’re waiting for someone else to take his or her turn before stepping in and doing a certain job the right way. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may want to start and end the day earlier than usual; there are good reasons to make a fast start and avoid letting the time run out.

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are behaving in a way that sends the wrong messages to those who have invested in you and your methods. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) What another is up to is likely to hold your interest throughout much of the day — and teach you something about your own methods.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may be tempted to do something that a loved one has been warning you against. In the nick of time, you’ll realize why it’s dangerous. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
