The Only Reason to Be Glad Your Beer Is Watered Down Off-duty Houston firefighter Craig Moreau used beer to extinguish a tire fire on a truck hauling cans of the brew Monday. Moreau saw the 18-wheeler truck on fire while driving home from Austin, Texas. Moreau and the trucker, whose rig’s brakes started the fire, first used an extinguisher, but it was not enough, so they began shaking and spraying cans of beer on the blaze. Nobody was hurt. (AP)

CDC: Lung Cancer Rates Drop, Especially in Men

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, left, accepted Chris Christie’s public and in-person apologies but said he suspects the whole story has yet to come out. The mayor said the emails and text messages — in which Christie loyalists gloat over the traffic jams and call Sokolich “an idiot” and “this little Serbian” — revealed that the governor’s office was tainted by “venomous, petty” politics. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says lung cancer incidence rates declined nearly 3 percent per year among men and about 1 percent per year among women from 2005 to 2009. The biggest decline was in the 35-to-44-year-old age group, where rates fell about 6 percent per year for both sexes combined. Officials credit tobacco-control efforts. (AP) ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

Gov. Chris Christie fired one of his top aides Thursday and apologized over and over for his staff’s “stupid” behavior, insisting during a nearly two-hour news conference that he had no idea anyone around him had engineered traffic jams as part of a political vendetta against a Democratic mayor. “I am embarrassed and humiliated by the conduct of some of the people on my team,” the Republican governor said at a news conference in which he took questions for nearly two hours. Christie, who had previously assured the public that his staff had no involvement in the lane closings last September that caused major backups at the George Washington Bridge, said he fired Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Anne Kelly

Tim Rutledge, 53, of Orlando, Fla., says he crawled under his cab Monday to fix his truck’s frozen brakes south of Indianapolis. But the truck suddenly settled deeper into the snow, pinning him. After about eight hours, his cellphone fell from his pocket and he used its voice activation to call for help. (AP)

Who Are You Calling a Wimp? Washington We’ve become weather wimps. As the world warms, the United States is getting fewer bitter cold spells like the one that gripped much of the nation this week. So when a deep freeze strikes, scientists say, it seems more unprecedented than it really is. An Associated Press analysis of the daily national winter temperature shows

that cold extremes have happened about once every four years since 1900. Until recently. When computer models estimated that the national average daily temperature for the Lower 48 states dropped to 17.9 degrees Monday, it was the first deep freeze of that magnitude in 17 years, according to Greg Carbin, warning meteorologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Many scientists say Americans are weather weenies who forgot what a truly cold winter is like. “I think that people’s memory about climate is really terrible,” Texas A&M University climate scientist Andrew Dessler wrote in an email. “So I think this cold event feels more extreme than it actually is.” Monday’s breathtaking chill? It was the 55th coldest day since 1900. SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

The Perils of Pregnancy in China Little accountability when officials force late-term abortions Beijing When her mind is clear, Gong Qifeng can recall how she begged for mercy. Several people pinned her head, arms, knees and ankles to a hospital bed before driving a syringe of labor-inducing drugs into her stomach. She was seven months pregnant with what would have been her second boy. The drugs caused her to have a stillborn baby after 35 hours of excruciating pain. She was forced to have the abortion by officials in China’s southern province of Hunan in the name of complying with national limits on family size.

Forced abortions are considered an acceptable way of enforcing China’s population limits, but they are banned when the woman is more than five months pregnant. Yet no one has been held accountable for Gong’s late-term abortion, and other women in similar cases also struggle to get justice and compensation. Since the abortion more than two years ago, Gong has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. She traveled with her husband to the capital to demand help paying for her treatment, but she ended up being hauled away in her pajamas by police, a detention recorded on video by The Associated Press. Try Another Day Steve Ander woke up on Sunday with the worst hangover of his life. The 31-year-old, who lives in Old Town, hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol the day before. But he did take one heck of a shot: Ander endeavored to use a single day pass to visit all 86 Metro rail stations. For his “Met rot hon,” A nder couldn’t count a stop unless he’d exited, snapped an exterior photo and posted it on Twitter. (“The pylon was proof,” says Ander, aka @Metro_nomad.) He didn’t even come close to finishing. When Ander devised this challenge, he forgot to factor in time-sucking weekend track work. He also didn’t consider the toll it would take on his body. He was dehydrated — on purpose, because of the limited access to bathrooms. He was exhausted —

after nearly 20 hours of riding. And he was sore — from all of that escalator climbing. “It was quite an ordeal,” says Ander, who managed to hit only 66 stations by closing time. I’d call that a failure. But Ander says he got what he was after: a better understanding of the WMATA system. “It’s a huge asset to the region, and I want to see how complex it is,” says Ander, who still plans to hit the 20 stations he didn’t get to. With his Saturday binge, Ander

definitely earned a degree in Metro 101. “In a day, I consumed more WMATA than anyone else has: 66 escalators, turnstiles, pylons,” he says. (And he saw so many ads for Ice Cube’s new movie “Ride Along” that he’ll never forget the tagline: “Propose to this cop’s sister? Rookie mistake.”) Cellphone service was way better than he’d expected, and most of the escalators he trudged up were working. The lighting has room for improvement, however, Ander says. Only Wheaton and Forest Glen seemed bright enough. Those two stations also offered the most memorable exits — the former with its epic escalator (the second-longest in the world), the latter with its speedy elevators. “When the doors open up, you definitely feel like you’re in a James Bond movie there,” Ander says. But real spies wouldn’t just rush through a place they were scoping out. They’d case the joint at all hours of the day. They’d study the people on the scene. They’d consider potential escape routes. Basically, they’d figure out what a regular commuter has to go through to face the daily challenge of getting from point A to point B. So if Ander really wants to dig up some Metro insight, I suggest he take a 007-style approach to his last 20 station visits. (Minus the fancy cars, of course.) He needs to get out and experience more than the nearest pylon — take a stroll to see how well the stop connects with the surrounding neighborhood, interact with human beings there (instead of just on social media), and maybe enjoy a martini that’s been shaken, not stirred. That’s a much better reason to wake up with a hangover.

Underwear Everywhere: You’ll definitely get to know your fellow Metro riders better on Sunday. Thanks to 20-minute headways on every line (except Red), there’s going to be plenty of quality platform time together. Plus, it’s the annual No Pants Metro Ride (improveverywhere.com), a global event that encourages people to take the subway in their skivvies. Participants are gathering at Hancock Park near the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station at 2 p.m. (E XPRESS)

Governor leaves office with a substantial, but sullied, legacy Richmond

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell wraps up his term Saturday with soaring expectations painfully half met. McDonnell had one of the most productive tenures in recent history, amassing accomplishments that even critics said would give him a credible shot at national office.

But his hefty record and political future have been clouded by something that would be a first for a modern-day Virginia governor: a potential criminal indictment. Federa l prosecutors have informed McDonnell and first lady Maureen McDonnell that they intend to bring charges related to more than $165,000 in gifts and loans that businessman Jonnie Williams showered on their family. Whatever the resolution of the criminal matter, the scandal has at least temporarily overshad-

owed McDonnell’s record — and promises to have a broader, lasting impact on the commonwealth itself. McDonnell’s woes helped doom fellow Republicans in last fall’s elections, contributing to the first Democratic sweep of statewide offices in decades. The episode has stained the reputation of a state that cherishes its history of clean government. And it has inspired one of the nearcertainties of this year’s General Assembly session: ethics reform. The paradox of McDonnell’s substantial but sullied legacy was on

When American Evan Lysacek won figure skating gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games, some hailed it as a victory for artistry over acrobatics. Others shrieked in protest, arguing that crowning an Olympic champion who hadn’t performed the sport’s most difficult element — the quadruple jump — over a skater who had, Russia’s Evgeni Plushenko, set figure skating’s evolution back decades. In an essay objecting to the judging, former Canadian champion Elvis Stojko proclaimed it “The Night They Killed Figure Skating.” Sadly, the highly anticipated reprise between Vancouver’s gold and silver medalists that was to unfold at the 2014 Sochi Games won’t come to pass. Lysacek, 28, announced in December that injury had forced him to abandon defense of his Olympic title; meantime, Plushenko, 31, appears to have been edged out by a younger rival in his quest for Russia’s lone men’s Olympic berth. But the debate over the quad endures. And it’s expected to define the men’s competition in Sochi, where no credible medal contender dare step on the ice without a quad in his repertoire. “Really, the men’s competition is quite a jump-fest now,” said three-time U.S. champion Johnny

It has been around since 1988, and has become a staple of medal-winning performances since. Heading into Sochi, the quad stands to eclipse all other story lines in men’s figure skating for reasons both practical and philosophical. But too much emphasis on exe-

points awarded for late-stage rigor. Needless to say, if a jump-fest turns into a crash-fest, it can be painful to watch. That was part of the calculus Lysacek weighed in crafting his program for the 2010 Vancouver Games. “When I watch skating, I like to see a clean program,” Lysacek said. “I like to see an athlete that has trained, is in control and executes one element after another. sports By the Numbers Jay Gruden was hired as the Redskins’ coach Thursday after steering the Bengals toward offensive improvement in each of his three seasons as coordinator.

Gruden’s Journey to D.C. New Redskins coach has work experience in the UFL and AFL

Snyder’s Latest Hire Jay Gruden is Dan Snyder’s eighth coach in 16 seasons as an NFL owner. The span under Snyder, left, includes four winning seasons and seven last-place finishes. Unlike predecessor Mike Shanahan, Gruden will not have final say over all football matters. He’ll report to general manager Bruce Allen, who has taken charge of assembling the roster and other personnel decisions. (AP)

The Redskins named Jay Gruden their new coach Thursday, adding a chapter to a remarkable coaching journey that is perhaps unlike any in NFL history — unless you can name another who has played and/ or coached in the World League of American Football, the Arena Football League and the United Football League, and who has drawn paychecks from professional teams called the Dragons, the Surge, the Storm, the Kats, the Predators and the Tuskers. If those minor-league teams — from places ranging from Barcelona to Sacramento to Orlando — don’t ring a bell, then surely the last name does. Gruden, who was the Bengals offensive coordinator the past three years, is the younger brother of “Monday Night Football” analyst Jon Gruden, former Super Bowlwinning coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jay, 46, spent seven seasons on Jon’s Tampa Bay staff. “[Jay’s] terminology and play design were similar to Jon’s,” said University of Pittsburgh quarterbacks coach Brooks Bollinger, who played two seasons under Jay Gruden with the UFL’s Florida Tuskers. “I think it would be wrong to say he got it all from Jon, but that was his starting point.” Jay Gruden’s career path may have more twists and turns than most, but his pedigree is pure foot-

seasons under Howard Schnellenberger at Louisville, throwing for 7,024 career yards and leading the Cardinals to an 8-3 season as a senior in 1988, the program’s first winning season in a decade. While Jon eventually became one of the most recognizable faces in professional football, Jay toiled away in obscurity in football’s minor leagues. But he won everywhere he went. In the Arena League, he won six championships as a player or coach. Jay then latched on as offensive coordinator with the Florida Tuskers of the fledgling UFL — hired by then-head coach Jim Haslett — and assumed the head coaching job when Haslett left to be the Redskins’ defensive coordinator. In both seasons, the Tuskers played in the UFL title game. “The guy is amazing and very intelligent,” Haslett told the Orlando Sentinel in 2009. Speaking of Jon and Jay, Haslett said, “They’re so much alike, it’s unbelievable.” DAVE SHEININ (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Redskins general manager Bruce Allen, center, introduced new head coach Jay Gruden, left, during a news conference at Redskins Park on Thursday.

Going Traditional A former Dragon now rules Redskins Park, and it’s a smart move. After failing with a Hall of Famer, two more proven pro mentors and a college legend, plus a quirky quarterbacks coach, Redskins owner Dan Snyder finally tried hiring an offensive coordinator with Jay Gruden. A traditional move of promoting a coordinator? How radical. It seems Snyder was tired of paying big money for legendary coaches By Rick and getting little Snider results, so why not try someone ready to move up? What’s next for Snyder, not overpaying aging free agents whose best days are behind them? Gruden is a solid pick regardless of whether the Redskins rebound from a franchisebusting six years of Jim Zorn and Mike Shanahan. It feeds

into the critical element for retaining Redskins fans, who are ready to quit after 22 years since a Super Bowl. No one sells offseason hope better than Snyder, and Gruden gives fans something to keep watching. How will Gruden mesh with quarterback Robert Griffin III? How will the defense and special teams change? Can the coach keep the owner from meddling without getting exiled? If Gruden could survive having an older brother nicknamed “Chuckie,” he should be able to handle Snyder. It was telling that Gruden said his first move would be to build confidence among play-

ers. He sounds like a selfless person, devoted more to team than his system. If the Redskins need to switch back to the 4-3 defense, so be it. If Griffin doesn’t execute a play well, Gruden won’t call it. Zone read, power blocking, whatever is needed, Gruden is open to it, saying, “I never found a play I didn’t like that works.” That will resonate through the building after his predecessor’s iron grip. “We expect to win soon,” Gruden said without hesitation. Gruden’s résumé is so varied it’s reassuring. No matter what happens, he has some background to deal with it. He was the third-string quarterback on

the Barcelona Dragons. That’s working from the bottom. Gruden won four Arena League titles playing for the Tampa Bay Storm and two as an Arena coach. Indeed, Gruden took a nontraditional path of the Arena League and UFL. Gruden has two stints in the NFL, including three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals before coming to Washington. What’s left? U.S. coach for the 2024 Games when football may become an Olympic sport? If Gruden fails with the Redskins, there’s always Snyder’s dormant Arena franchise. Washington’s newest coach needs to handle any task, down to parking cars and selling tickets. Gruden seems capable of handling it all. Good thing, because there’s a lot of work to rebuilding this team. Rick Snider has covered Washington sports since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks

Jim Haslett is likely to retain his title as Redskins defensive coordinator.

Is Haslett Remaining On Staff? Redskins Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett is expected to remain on the coaching staff of the Washington Redskins’ newly hired coach, Jay Gruden, a person familiar with the team’s deliberations said Thursday. Haslett is likely to retain the title of defensive coordinator. Haslett previously worked with Gruden in the United Football League and remains under contract to the Redskins. He was not fired when the Redskins dismissed former coach Mike Shanahan and much of Shanahan’s staff. General manager Bruce Allen said at the time that the team’s new coach would determine the status of those coaches not immediately fired. Raheem Morris is expected to remain on staff, possibly having a larger role in directing the defense. His contract expires in February, but a person close the situation expected that new deal to be finalized soon. The Winning Formula

GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATIONS

Can a quarterback be too old to win a Super Bowl? Is a certain amount of playoff experience a prerequisite for a title run? Are running QBs incapable of winning a ring? We analyzed the championship seasons of the quarterbacks who won the past 10 Super Bowls to get a better understanding of NFL trends. Here’s what we learned, including which QB left in this year’s postseason best fits the mold. JEFFREY TOMIK (E XPRESS)

PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE

While having an extensive playoff résumé may be a bit overrated, every championship QB in the past 10 years played in at least two postseason games before making their Super Bowl-winning run. Cam Newton and Andrew Luck are the only two QBs left in this postseason without that kind of experience. Notable stat: 24 — Postseason games played by the Patriots’ Tom Brady — more than Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Colin Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, Newton and Luck combined. Past 10 years’ average: 5 games

AGE

The belief that young QBs can’t win in the postseason has been debunked repeatedly over the past 10 years. On the other end of the life spectrum, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers are proving that guys in their mid-30s can still play at an elite level. But when it comes to winning titles, there’s been a rather small career window. No Super Bowl-winning QB over the past 10 years was older than 30 when his championship season started. And in that span, only one QB (Ben Roethlisberger in 2005) was younger than 26. Weird Stat: 4 — Number of the past six Super Bowls won by a Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Eli Manning (twice), Brees and Joe Flacco. Past 10 years’ average: 27 (as of Dec. 31 of that year)

DRAFT

Tom Brady — the Patriots’ sixth-round selection (199th pick) in 2000 — has won three Super Bowls, but let’s not jump to the conclusion that championship QBs are easy to find in later rounds. Since Brady’s last title in 2004, each Super Bowl-winning QB was selected in the top 32, with Drew Brees (the first pick in the second round in 2001) being the only one chosen outside the first round. Notable Stat: 1 — QB to win a Super Bowl in the past 10 years with a team other than the one that drafted him (or was traded to on draft night). Brees was drafted by the Chargers but he won with the Saints. Past 10 years’ average: 50th pick (it rises to 12th without Brady)

sports RUSHING YARDS

PASSER RATING

In nine of the past 10 years, the Super Bowlwinning QB rushed for 101 yards or less in the regular season. The exception, Aaron Rodgers, ran for 356 yards in 2010, but even he doesn’t rely on running as much as some of his counterparts. He’s never rushed for more than 500 yards in a season — a mark reached by Cam Newton, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick this year.

There really hasn’t been any correlation between regular-season passer rating and titles — which is kind of surprising. Eli Manning won in 2007 with a dismal rating of 73.9, while Drew Brees had a 109.6 mark in his championship season. In the past 10 years, four Super Bowl-winning QBs had a passer rating below 87.7— a mark 16 QBs surpassed in 2013.

Notable stat: -31 — Rushing yards by Peyton Manning this season. While a true rushing QB hasn’t won a Super Bowl over the past 10 years, no QB had negative rushing yards and went on to win the title in the same season.

Notable stat: 7 — QBs with a passer rating above 100 this year, the most ever in a single season. Past 10 years’ average: 92.4

PASSING YARDS

Past 10 years’ average: 79 (5 per game)

TD-INT RATIO

No QB passed for 5,000 yards in the same season he won the Super Bowl — although Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have a chance to break that trend this year. Passing yard figures are often overvalued. In fact, Brees’ lowest single-season passing-yard total in eight years in New Orleans was in 2009 — the year he won the title. As for three-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, he’s surpassed 4,000 passing yards six times in his career, but never in a title year.

There has been a drastic variance in TD-INT ratio for the past 10 Super Bowl-winning QBs; TD passes range from 17 to 34 and interceptions thrown range from nine to 20. But three of the remaining eight QBs in this year’s playoffs don’t fall in that wide spectrum (outperforming the winning QBs of the past 10 years). Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have each thrown more than 34 TDs this year — with Manning setting the single-season record with 55 — and Colin Kaepernick threw fewer interceptions (eight) than each of the previous 10 Super Bowl winners.

Notable stat: 198.8 — Average passing yards per game for Ben Roethlisberger in his Super Bowlwinning campaign in 2005. Only five out of 37 qualifying QBs passed for less than 200 yards a game in 2013.

Notable stat: 20 — Interceptions thrown by Eli Manning in his Super Bowl-winning season of 2007, which was tied for the league lead.

Past 10 years’ average: 3,779 (245 per game)

Past 10 years’ average: 25-13

AND THE WINNING QB WILL BE … After crunching the numbers and evaluating the past 10 Super Bowl winners we’ve found that ... this postseason is set up to break the mold. There’s two distinct groups of QBs remaining: the old-time, prototypical drop-back passers (Peyton Manning, Brady, Brees and Rivers) and the up-and-coming, mobile QBs (Wilson, Luck, Newton and Kaepernick). Still want a prediction based on those stats we just made you read? OK. So which quarterback best aligns with the past 10 champs? Drumroll please ... it’s Colin Kaepernick! Quick, call your bookie. Tell him to put your life savings on the 49ers! When have trends ever been broken? I’m sure this formula would have spit out Joe Flacco’s name at this time last year. So why Kaepernick? His playoff experience (three games), age (26) and QB rating (91.6) are the closest to the averages for the past champions. While he has more rushing yards (524) than any Super Bowl winner of the past 10 years, his stats are pretty close in the other six categories. So there you have it. The San Francisco 49ers will win Super Bowl XLVIII. If by some miracle it’s not the 49ers, don’t blame us. It was the numbers’ fault.

Yet somehow no previous director thought to include rampaging supernatural beasts, a shape-shifting witch or Keanu Reeves. Those last three are prominent in “47 Ronin,” Hollywood’s first stab at the samurai tale. It’s big and brawling yet often dull, with about as much genuine Japanese character as a food-court teriyaki stand. Meryl Streep utterly dominates “August: Osage County,” the screen adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning 2007 drama of family dysfunction. In it, she plays another in a series of recent roles that tap into the actress’ uncanny ability to evoke both horror and pity at her character’s flaws. Yet with her performance as Violet Weston, the venom-spewing matriarch of an extended family that includes three grown daughters, the actress may have outdone herself. Violet, who is suffering from mouth cancer and addicted to pain pills, is a woman given to such toxic utterances and such a corrosive style of mothering that it’s a wonder her children haven’t each developed cancers of their own, simply from long-term exposure. In a figurative sense they have, as this intricately plotted story gradually reveals, during a gathering of Violet’s clan for one family member’s funeral. Unsurprisingly, that death is an apparent suicide — circumstantial evidence, as the film strongly suggests, that Violet is impossible to live with. There are moments when the film, which is set in a sweltering Oklahoma August, seems a bit overheated for the screen. The inherent theatricality of Violet’s character, which may be well-suited to the stage, is occasionally hard to take in such intimate close-ups, despite Streep’s bravura acting. I didn’t know any of my neighbors.” Her solution? Look for a town house. The Lockheed Martin analyst now lives happily in one in Old Town Alexandria. They also can be more costeffective, though that depends on size, location and whether renters split the cost with roommates. For renters looking to escape cramped apartments, town houses can offer more space, urban environments and the right price. town house a mile from the Van Dorn Metro stop. Sauls says she now pays $2,000 in rent — just $15 more than she paid for the apartment building. Town houses can offer even more savings if renters are willing to live with roommates. Chad Hall, 29, rented a town house in Falls Church for the two years he worked as a Hill staffer. He split his $1,900 per month rent with two other guys, for a total personal bill of $633. “That’s the reason I didn’t move,” he says. Holmstrom is also saving on rent. Though her town house is split into four units that are on the small side at 600 square feet, she’s paying $1,250 per month for rent and utilities, versus the $1,522 she paid to share her 1,000-squarefoot Clarendon apartment. Holmstrom says she loves being able to step outside right away and sit on her patio. And she now knows her neighbors. That’s part of the charm of town houses — they result in great community, says Tim Burr of Yarmouth Management. “People here on Capitol Hill know their neighbors because they see them out in their yard all the time. People are out walking around, rather than driving,” he says. Some town houses, including

heirloom violin and her roommates’ jewelry. Two weeks later, her car was broken into. That didn’t happen in Clarendon, she notes, where her concierge greeted any strangers entering the building, and her car was parked in a garage — though the added security cost her $200 per month. For some Washingtonians, town

Sauls’ in Alexandria, have neighborhood associations, which often band together to pay for things like landscaping and repairs to a shared roof or foundation. But those are a mostly found the suburbs, Burr says, which rents homes on Capitol Hill. Neighborhood associations are rare within D.C., he says, since they are often started by developers trying to market and sell many homes at once. But even if you get more room and more bang-for-your-buck than in a high-rise, many town houses, come with tradeoffs. Though some in the D.C. area are newly renovated, many town houses were built decades ago and have the quirks and foibles of older homes. For example, cold drafts this winter have led Holmstrom to put plastic on her windows and run a space heater to keep her bedroom warm. Outdated appliances can also give town-house renters something to complain about. Hall’s

Rebecca Sauls and her husband moved to a 1,400-square-foot Alexandria town house — 200 more square feet than their apartment, for $15 a month more in rent.

Falls Church town house was built in 1997, he says, but it had older appliances. “The stove and microwave were attached to each other,” he says. “My mom and dad came up and every time they said, ‘I feel like your stove is from 1973.’ ” Pests are also a possibility in town houses, whereas living on the

sixth or 14th floor of a well-kept building will improve your odds of a rodent-and-bug-free existence. Town houses also offer fewer safety features than fortresslike high-rises. Before living in Clarendon, Holmstrom lived in a Capitol Hill rowhouse with friends. Four days after she moved in, thieves broke in and stole her laptop, an

houses are a middle step between renting a small apartment and taking the plunge into owning a larger home. When Jay Hamm, a 33-yearold technology salesman, and girlfriend Laura Burlingham wanted to move in together, they decided to rent a Falls Church town home. Neither’s apartments was big enough to share, and they weren’t ready to buy on their own in a volatile market. “We didn’t want to commit ourselves to a big house that could be in the high six or seven figures,” Hamm says. Now, Hamm says, they have about 1,800 square feet; three stories; room for an at-home office; a backyard and space for their dog. And at $2,650 per month, their rental is spacious — and sensible. Developers turn two towers in Southwest D.C. into apartments Green Development

Adaptive re-use, one of the tenets of green building, is visible in full force in Southwest Washington at Sky House, where the two towers that formerly housed the Environmental Protection Agency headquarters have been transformed into apartment buildings. The towers at Sky House (1150 4th Street SW; 866-676-2441, skyhousedc.com), one of the first LEED-certified re-use projects in the city, will be the tallest residential structuresin Southwest. Resi-

dents will have unobstructed views of the Potomac, the monuments and the Capitol. Because it’s an adaptive re-use project — meaning the buildings’ concrete hulls, elevator shafts and stairwells were kept while almost everything else was replaced, Washington City Paper reported — the construction is “one of the more challenging developments anyone could expect to do,” Vicki Davis, president of Sky House’s lead developer, Urban Atlantic, told City Paper last month. Sky House East, which opened for leasing last week, will have 266 units, including studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments. The similarly sized Sky House West, just across the street, is likely to

open for leasing this spring. Rents at Sky House will range from the $1,600s to the $3,200s, and 20 percent of the units have been set aside as affordable housing for low-income tenants. Outdoor amenities include a rooftop swimming pool, an observation deck and patio. Indoor amenities include a game room, a fitness center with a personal trainer, a conference room, an Internet lounge and concierge services. The pet-friendly complex also has an on-site grooming space dubbed the “Grrroom,” and underground garage parking is available. Residents are steps from the Southwest Waterfront Metro station, shops and restaurants. ( THE WASHINGTON POST/E XPRES S)

“The Past,” out today, fails. Going just from memory, there are three women in the film (pass), two of them talk to each other (still a pass!) but their major conversation — in fact, their relationship for the entirety of the film — is defined by one’s relationship with a man. So, the movie fails feminism. Except not — not at all. Berenice

(This does not mean “do they make choices that you agree with?”) Are they naked in a situation where a human could expect to be naked; do they have sex at times a human might have sex and in a manner at least approximating the manner in which a human might? Are they treated as humans by the other people in the movie and, when they are not, do they point that out? The Bechdel test is a good test of gender representation, but it’s not the only test. “The Past” fails on the Bechdel level, but it succeeds so well at giving us a realistic, nuanced woman that the failing grade doesn’t really matter.

‘Lone Survivor’ is heavy on violence and lacks imagination Film Review Based on the memoir of Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who is played by producer Mark Wahlberg, “Lone Survivor” tells the story of Operation Red Wings, a disastrous 2005 mission to kill a prominent Taliban fighter, Ahmad Shah (Yousuf Azami). As the title gives away, the four-man team of commandos, ambushed and stranded without communications on a remote mountain in Afghanistan, is slowly, agonizingly whittled away, one by one, until … well, let’s leave some things to the imagination. Luttrell’s comrades-in-arms are played by Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Taylor Kitsch, each of whom is barely recognizable behind the

scruffy beards, grime and blood that cover their faces. Inexplicably, they wear no helmets. “Lone Survivor” is a loud and grinding affair, seemingly as intent on wearing down its audience as the Taliban is on the film’s heroes. At times, the violence is so unrelenting and fierce that it’s hard to believe that there’s anyone left alive, let alone with any bullets left to fire. What’s missing here is something, or rather, someone, to care about. Written and directed by Peter Berg (“Battleship”), the film presumes our emotional investment in Luttrell and his fellow soldiers’ mission. The questions of who exactly Shah is, other than one of many murderous thugs, and why we should care so deeply about his fate, is never really explained in a way that grabs the imagination. He’s no Osama bin Laden, in other words, and this is no “Zero Dark Thirty.” Even worse, Berg

(PG, 108 MINUTES) “Frozen” might not have potential pop hits — the songs sound much more like musical theater show tunes than Miley Cyrus auto-tuned — but the animated comedy-adventure has a sweet and very modern message, plus strong characters. More important, the movie blends the music-minded mentality of yore with the more recent ambition of truly appealing to all ages.

Only the film’s real hero isn’t Luttrell, who survives unimaginable violence, including a leg injury that

We can’t say more without spoiling things, but “Lone Survivor’s” most fascinating character doesn’t even appear until the film’s final minutes, and is dealt with mostly in the whatever-happened-to titles that run on screen just before the closing credits. Razor is lured out of retirement for the bout he evaded three decades earlier, and all the requisite training scenes — the jabbing and jogging, raw-egg-swilling and truck-pulling — are nearly as exhilarating as they were in 1976. A Familiar Thrill Ride The first half hour of “The Suspect” is dizzying and disorienting, but not because this South Korean spy thriller delves into the perplexities of relations with the North. It’s because director Won Shinyun skillfully emulates the youare-there-but-where-the-heck-isthat? style of the “Bourne” movies. Like Jason Bourne, Ji (Gong Yoo) is on the run, with nearly everyone after him. Amid kinetic action sequences and cryptic f lashbacks, Ji’s story gradually emerges: Trained as a North Korean superspy, he defected to the South after his wife and daughter were reportedly killed. There he worked as a driver, a choice of profession that foreshadows a couple of the more inventive car chases in recent movies.

The content of his stories might not add up to much without the serial memoirist’s distinctive, sardonic voice. “C.O.G.,” the first feature-length adaptation of Sedaris’ work (it’s based on a short story from “Naked”), captures the right atmosphere but doesn’t offer

the same wit and precision as the written version. The dramedy is the second feature from Kyle Patrick Alvarez, who won praise for 2009’s “Easier With Practice.” That film also was about a listless young man, so Alvarez seems like a good pick to adapt the story of David (Jonathan Groff), a self-centered Yalie — with a monogrammed sweater to prove it — who takes a bus from Connecticut to Oregon to live off the grid and work on an apple farm. Along the way, he meets some mildly interesting characters, while trying to sort out his sexuality and feelings

an operative, bested him during a face-off in Hong Kong. Min correctly surmises that Ji remains in town because he’s on a mission. But that assignment, it’s eventually revealed, is not for either government. As if dodging a citywide dragnet weren’t tricky enough, Ji also intends to find the man he believes killed his wife and young daughter. Actually, one or both of them may still be alive. But that’s information known only to the story’s true villains — men whom Min ultimately will decide he hates as much as Ji does. Unsurprisingly, “The Suspect,” out Friday, turns out to be a tale of corruption within the ranks. After all the punishment it delivers, the film goes soft at the end, with not one but two fairy-tale endings. The first, if not both, of them will likely appeal more to Korean audiences than American ones. But most of what comes before should entertain any action buff who doesn’t mind a few subtitles with his gunplay, jump cuts and cold-eyed determination.

about religion. The success of the film rests almost entirely on Groff, who channels Sedaris’ manner with a bit of tone-deaf snobbery, while also coming across as likable. When David’s eyes swell with tears as he asks God for forgiveness, it’s enough to make the audience forget that minutes earlier, he was awkwardly telling a lunch table of factory workers, who are just scraping by, that they really should vacation in Japan. The story, while never slow, seems rudderless. And that lack of focus extends to the movie’s score, with percussive beats that sound better suited for a movie about high school cheerleaders. Loud and distracting, the music feels like the antithesis of “C.O.G.,” which, at its best, craftily exposes subtle realizations about growing up. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

some of us the confounding cosmology of kids killing other kids for pleasure and political expedience reeks of cynicism and downright perversion, fans of “The Hunger Games” should find “Catching Fire” a superlative advancement of the franchise. Everyone hits their marks with gusto and believability in “Catching Fire” — even Liam Hemsworth, who has next to nothing to do as Katniss’ hometown squeeze, Gale. A Study in Characters

One ‘True’ Director The entire eight-episode season of “True Detective” was stewarded by just one director, Cary Joji Fukunaga. “When you have one person guiding the vision, and gaining the trust of the actors, all the way through, the chain isn’t broken from one episode to another,” Fukunaga says. “It all just flows.” (AP)

With ‘True Detective,’ McConaughey and Harrelson reinvent the buddy cop drama Just as “The Sopranos” reinvented the mob drama as a family melodrama/comedy, the anthology series “True Detective” (9 p.m. Sun., HBO) brilliantly explodes every cliche about dramas based on buddy cop banter. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are on top of their game. Everything you’ve heard about this being McConaughey’s year — with his roles in “Dallas Buyers Club” and “The Wolf of Wall Street”— is true. In 1995, detectives Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) are assigned to investigate a gruesome murder in rural Louisiana, a killing shot through with ritualistic symbolism. Hart, a married man and local good old boy, has a hard time with Cohle, a transplant from a Texas narcotics squad. Over time, we discover that Cohle’s personal and pro-

That latter achievement is thanks largely to the film’s star, British actor Idris Elba, who has transformed himself in recent years from an inner-city Baltimore drug kingpin on “The Wire” to a London detective with a dark side on the television series “Luther” to this beloved freedom fighter, who died Dec. 5. TV style pro Daisy Lewellyn opens her life up to the camera as one of six African-American career women on Bravo’s new “Blood, Sweat & Heels.”

on women and their careers in fashion, real estate and media, I thought, “Bingo!” I work in fashion, and I wanted to show it’s not all Champagne days and Louboutin nights. We actually work. What can we expect as the season rolls on? It’s kind of an emotional roller coaster. It gets tougher. You see a progression of friendships, and challenges we have with men.

Bargain guru Daisy Lewellyn never met a markeddown Fendi bag she didn’t like. She wrote “Never Pay Retail Again” ($10, Simon & Schuster) and makes frequent appearances on TV shows like “Today.” She’s one of six African-American working women on Bravo’s new reality show, “Blood, Sweat & Heels” (9 p.m. Sun). The series tracks them as they try to succeed in their careers and love. You live in Brooklyn. Is it as vibrant as people say? Brooklyn is the new Manhattan! I remember there was an episode of “Sex and the City” when Miranda was talking about moving there, and everyone was aghast. But now Brooklyn is a hub of creativity. It’s inspiring to sit in a coffee shop and spy on people to hear about their projects. You host a popular eat and chat event there, Brooklyn Brunches, which is featured on “Blood, Sweat & Heels.” What’s it like? It’s basically a gathering I do for

my friends the first Saturday of every month. We have bottomless mimosas and conversations on juicy topics. Why has brunch turned into the best way to hang out with your girlfriends? Brunch is the new black! It’s not as stressful as dinner. And most people’s favorite things to do are eat, drink and talk. Why’d you decide to be on a reality show? W hen I heard “Blood, Sweat & Heels” was going to focus

You’re a self-proclaimed bargainista. What are some of your secrets? One thing, which involves zero money, is to gather your friends and do a style swap. You have everyone bring three to five items, and you swap. I landed a Chloe bag the last time I did one! On the show, you spend a lot of time going to parties. Any tips on dressing for them? Figure out what kind of party it is and what time it’s starting and ending. That’ll give you clues. And look at the invitation and see where it is — you don’t want to wear stilettos at a garden wedding and sink in the mud. What’s your go-to party outfit? I go with a LCD — a little colored dress, say magenta or emerald. Those colors photograph well. And also think about what you look like from the neck up. That’s what most people notice, so think about your necklace. JENNIFER BARGER (E XPRESS)

lookout food

Dip. Sip. Repeat. It’s frigid. Maybe you don’t want to make a reservation anywhere except your living room. No matter — invite over a few friends willing to brave the chill for a cozy evening of forks and corks. “I love fondue because it gives guests the chance to share and interact,” says chef Dennis Marron of Poste Moderne Brasserie (555 Eighth Street NW, 202-783-6060). Communal, social and (yes) a little bit retro, the prep-inadvance and cook-your-own aspects of a fondue soirée also virtually guarantee a stress-free event for the host.

PLAN IT

Start with a good fondue pot, says Marron. If it uses Sterno, heat the fondue first on the stove before transferring to the table; if it’s electric, you can warm the mixture right in the pot. And if you have the space (and the extra pots), he recommends setting up three stations for cheese, oil or broth, and chocolate. Don’t have a dedicated pot? Brasserie Beck (1101 K St. NW, 202-408-1717) chef de cuisine Anthony Ancinapura suggests melting and stirring the cheese or chocolate in a double boiler before pouring into a serving dish.

PREP IT

To keep their aged cheddar-truffle goat cheese fondue smooth and

creamy, Blue Duck Tavern (1201 24th Street NW, 202-419-6755) cheese specialist Matthew O’Herron has a little secret. “Use sodium citrate, which is essentially the same emulsifier used in processed American cheese.” To cook meat, vegetables and seafood, use a mixture of court bouillon (wine, broth and herbs), or the traditional, decidedly more decadent option. “Duck or beef fat work great, but you can also use clarified butter,” recommends Marron, but avoid olive oil — its smoking point is too low.

PLUNGE IT

“Get creative with your garnishes — think of off the wall, unexpected things to dip,” Ancinapura says. Try Brussels sprouts, grapes and Tater Tots in cheese, broccoli

and scallions in oil or cake slices and dried fruit in chocolate. Mix up dipping sauces to use on anything cooked in oil or broth: horseradish stirred into sour cream, curry powder sprinkled into plain yogurt, soy sauce added to chopped ginger, garlic and scallion, and Worcestershire sauce and shallots mingled with ketchup.

PAIR IT

Nopa Kitchen + Bar (800 F St. NW, 202-347-4667) chef Greg McCarty serves the same beverage that went into the cheese fondue — a sparkling wine, which goes with everything. O’Herron pours a bock or doppelbock with Alpine cheeses or aged gouda, and hoppy red ales with cheddar or British cheeses. Blue Duck Tavern sommelier Gene Alexeyev relies on the “razor-like crispness” of sauvignon blanc to cut through rich fondues, and earthy reds to bring out the forest and mushroom aromas in sharper cheeses. Brasserie Beck general manager Ramon Narvaez suggests Cotes du Rhone with court bouillon, and a glass of red zinfandel or ruby or tawny Port as a sweet finish with chocolate. KELLY A. DEAR MANOLO ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER

Peace of Find ANYONE WHO’S LOST luggage

on vacation knows it can ruin a trip. (Having nothing but flight-over sweats to wear in Paris, not chic.) Trakdot ($90 plus $13 annual fee, trakdot.com) makes sure your stuff never goes missing via a gadget with GPS technology. Simply put the tiny thing in a checked bag, then, upon landing, the nearest cellular network will alert you of your luggage’s location via text message.

SRIRACHA ROOSTER, watch your

feathery back. Bandar sauce, a monkey-decked line of spicy, salty chutneys ($4 each, bandarfoods .com), also adds a cross-cultural kick to soups, burgers or curries. Based on traditional Indian recipes, they’re sold in easy-to-squeeze bottles, the better to appeal to ketchup-loving Americans.

ITALIAN WOOL SUIT? Check. Brushed leather satchel? Check. Woven silk skinny tie? It’s all in the details. That’s why D.C.-born Penance Hall’s new line of luxury dress socks should also suit such discerning gents (currently $20 a pair via a Kickstarter program on penancehall.com; $35 thereafter). Crafted in the U.S. from a breathable, super-soft North Carolina wool, the toetoppers boast no-droop, wicking construction as well as sly, striped style.

— CAROL

Manolo says, with the right shoes you are the beautiful and stylish Grace Kelly, awaiting the arrival of her Prince Moderately Charming, the hereditary ruler of the minor Mediterranean tax haven.

WEST ELM

Toeing the Line

I have been lusting after Robert Clergerie shoes, but have some misgivings. A. They’re so expensive. B. They often look so high I might die wearing them (and then I won’t be able to work to pay for them!) C. If I do buy them and don’t trip, I’ll look like a female Frankenstein’s monster with huge feet. What do you recommend? I’d like some basic black ones for an upcoming Puerto Rico trip.

A Stripe Force STEVEN ALAN, best known for his cool-kid, preppy clothing, is now

dabbling in the home decor biz via a new collaboration with West Elm (sold in stores and at westelm.com). Using his trademark stripes and color blocking plus the help of Indian, Haitian and Nicaraguan fair-trade artists, Alan created a collection of crisp pieces. Options include earth-toned ceramic vases in multiple sizes (shown, $24-59), papier-mache tables ($299) and stripe duvet covers ($149-$169) in color combos like orange on white or blue and yellow.

Feline, Unwind lounge happily but look, well, ridiculous? The Cat Crib, ($29, uncommongoods.com), a sort of feline hammock, straps to the base of tables or chairs, giving your pet a napping perch/hiding spot to get away from the new Christmas puppy. Whether you bring kitty a catnip drink with an umbrella in it is totally up to you.

UNCOMMON GOODS

WANT TO MAKE MISTER WHISKERS

With the wrong shoes, however, you are the Emmett Kelly, the sadfaced circus clown who sweeps up after the elephants at the end of the show. And this is why it is so important to develop the personal style, one that is appropriate to your shape and situation. Having the sense of your own style will help you make decisions about what you can and cannot wear. Happily, the shoes of the Robert Clergerie are made for women who have their own style, they are distinctive without being annoying. Here is the Ekora ($525, neiman marcus.com), the handsome platform sandal available in the black and white mix. The Manolo thinks they are perfect for visiting the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. DIFFICULT

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You should be able to get a lot of information, even when someone else offers you only broad strokes. Interpretation is key. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may have to wait longer than expected for word from someone whose activities far afield affect you more directly than anticipated. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Upon review, it’s likely that your first instincts may have misled you. The facts do not support your first assessment; be flexible. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Many may think that all you have going for you right now is a set of gimmicks or tricks, but you know that this is not the case. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may have to determine very quickly just what the best approach will be for you and those around you.

Thursday’s Solution

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’ll want to stay the course and make sure that the direction you are going serves all of your immediate needs.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) An opportunity that presents itself may not be available to you ever again. Be ready to act swiftly and decisively. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You can rise above the level of ignorance that you find at work or at play. Do your best to avoid active judgments, however.

Comics

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) A brief impairment may slow you down enough for you to get a better look at where you’re going — and a better idea why. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can turn a negative into a positive before the day is out. What happens when your back is turned makes a difference.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
