RUNNING FOR STILLWATER SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION
Hello everyone,
I’ve made the decision to run for Stillwater School Board of Education. I will be a write in, and I’m hoping I can count on you for your support. My name has to be spelled exactly like this: Carrie Sabourin. I am a lifelong resident of Stillwater. I went to Stillwater School from start to fnish, and I am an alumni of the Stillwater High School Class of 1996. I am married, and have 2 kids in the district. You will always fnd me, as I am always at events in the Stillwater Community, and our school.
My reasons for wanting to serve on the School Board are simple. As a board member, I will represent the students, teachers, parents, and the community. I love to contribute to this school and this community. I am committed to making a positive impact, while ensuring the district has a curriculum that prepares students for the future.
On a more personal note, it would bring me great pride to serve on the School Board. I come from a family that has always been involved in the district. My Dad was a teacher here for over 30 years, and he also served on the School Board.
I am asking for your support as I run for School Board as a write in, and I thank you all for your consideration.
The voting will take place on May 20, 2025 in the MS/HS Auditorium.
Sincerely,
Carrie Sabourin

Globalfoundries First Quarter Financial Results
by Vince Gallagher, May 6
Globalfoundries recently announced their fnancial results for the frst quarter, which offcially ended March 31, 2025.
Highlights of the report include overall revenue of $1.585 billion, net income of $211 million (up from $137 million last year) and Non-IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) net income of $189 million. The company reported an EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) of $558 million and a gross margin of 23.9% for the quarter. Net cash provided by operating activities came to $331 million and there was a reported Non-IFRS adjusted free cash fow of $165 million.
Globalfoundries reported frst-quarter earnings of 34 cents per share, beating prior estimates of 28 cents.
the U.S. The growth in the automobile industry during the frst quarter can also be an example of this potential beneft.
Globalfoundries CEO Tim Breen also issued a statement on the frst quarter results.
“The Globalfoundries team delivered strong fnancial for revenue, gross margin, and earnings per share. This is a testament to our solid execution, operational excellence, and robust design wins, our automotive, communications infrastructure and datacenter markets grew year over year in the frst quarter. From autonomous vehicles to satellite communications to optical networking, Globalfoundries continues to build momentum in critical applications with robust growth prospects.”
There was also considerable revenue growth in its automotive industry. This segment saw a 16 percent year-over-year increase. With $4.7 billion in liquidity, GlobalFoundries also showed a strong balance sheet for this frst quarter.
However, concerns have been raised due to geopolitical tensions and tariff impacts, which are expected to affect global supply chain dynamics and end market demand into the second half of 2025. This presents a signifcant challenge for GlobalFoundries moving forward. For example, the company experienced a decline in smart mobile devices revenue by nearly 21 percent, which brings upon a concern with the overall market shifts. While tariff impacts remained minimal in this frst quarter timeline, company management mentioned potential pressures in the second half of the year due to the economic uncertainty.
GlobalFoundries also estimated an annual cost impact of nearly $20 million from tariffs, with minimal effects expected in the second quarter. According to information released in the overall report, the company is now exploring options to offset these costs. Some examples include adjusting average selling prices and negotiations with customers.
The chip industry in general is also prepared for potential changes to the CHIPS Act, a law that brought in over $52 billion for domestic semiconductor chips manufacturing and production.
However, tariffs on foreign-made chips could actually help GlobalFoundries by encouraging customers in purchasing chips made here in
Also in related business highlights, this past April Bosch (German automobile supplier) announced the launch of its next single chip radar sensor, which “reliably, precisely, and quickly detects objects for assisted and automated driving. Globalfoundries will continue its partnership with Bosch, enabling this high-performance, high-effciency automotive radar technology.”

TThe Newland Wood Fire House Renovations Project
he Auxiliary now has a mission to help the fre house itself by replacing windows so they are fully functional, replacing windows that are boarded up, brick washing the façade, and providing whatever other items pop up. There will be a number of events and activities in the coming months to help raise the funds needed to supply these items (one at a time if need be) until the restoration is complete. “We fgure if our community could raise enough interest and money to move the Blockhouse, this is defnitely doable,” Sue Mehan, Auxiliary Treasurer.
A little history: a blaze was discovered at the original frehouse on January 28, 1896. One lone man pulled the steamer, still owned by the frehouse, out of the burning building, but all other equipment and records were lost. Within one year a new two-story brick frehouse was built in 1897t. Storage for both companies was contained on the lower level while the upstairs provided two separate meeting quarters. Although the building has seen partial renovations over the years, the brick architecture outlines the doors to the original steamer room.
There will be a cornhole tournament on May 31st at the American Legion 490, and a cash raffe in July.
Iwanted to share some fun school news from Hoosic Valley Elementary The last week in April, we celebrated “Every Kid Healthy” week by hosting a “Get Caught Eating Your Veggies” contest. The participation was absolutely amazing!! More than 200 additional servings of veggies were prepared dailyto accommodate requests for “more” from our students. Head Cooks Jane Persons, Elementary , and Denise Lang, High school, have worked tirelessly with their teams to increase participation and off a larger variety of menu items. We have been focusing on scratch cooked meals as well as offering more LOCAL (Farm2School) options.
So far this year we have served 85,395 meals, an increase of 18,191 MORE meals than last year through the end of April!!
I am incredibly proud of all the accomplishments we’ve made here this year!

Hendrick did lead his company during the war. They were ordered to Lake George in May 1777, as the British Army was advancing south to Saratoga. They helped move cannon from Fort Edward to Stillwater ahead of the British. Then some of the men were ordered home to protect any civilians who hadn’t evacuated, and others fought in the battle of Saratoga. Hendrick’s company also participated in a major action in May 1780 when Governor George Clinton tried to intercept Sir John Johnson and a British force on Lake Champlain. The men marched to Lake George, then went by boat up the lake, then walked on to near Crown Point, failing to catch up with Johnson by just a few hours.
In late 1781, a dispute over the boundary of the future state of Vermont erupted, with Ethan Allen and his “Green Mountain Boys” feeling that Vermont should extend all the way to the Hudson River, including us in Schaghticoke. Hendrick and about sixty others met and decided they would support Vermont in this cause. They met to elect a governor of Vermont! This was certainly a questionable position for a man who had sworn an oath to a New York regiment . He was replaced as Captain at this time by Matthew DeGarmo.
In fact, Hendrick took much of his company of the 14th with him and they joined the Vermont militia. He was listed as a Captain in the list of Vermont soldiers in the Revolution, and was paid for service in September and October 1781. The border dispute almost came to a shooting war in December 1781- I am not sure where Hendrick was at the time.
Apparently his rebellion was tolerated, as he was included as a soldier in the 14th in a 1782 document, and was listed on pay vouchers in the 1780’s- the militia men were fnally paid for their service about 1784. He continued his aggressive ways as an old man. In 1793 he sued a man named Moses Bessey in Pittstown, accusing him of “Taking and carrying away from him a quantity of watermilions” worth 2 pounds. He lost the suit. Sadly, I don’t know about the end of his life. Ancestry.com claims he died about 1797.
Hoosic Valley National Honor Society Inducts New Members
The Hoosic Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) held an induction ceremony on May 8, 2025 to welcome the new members. The ceremony included the singing of the Alma Mater by NHS members of the senior chorus, a welcome by Christopher Tracy, Chapter President, followed by the reading of the Explanatory Statements of the four pillars of the NHS society by the current chapter offcers. A new honorary member of NHS was inducted this year along with the students. This notable distinction was awarded to Eric O’Brien, a teacher

Chapter Advisor, Erin McCauliffe, described the Methods of Selection for the new inductees. She explained that students in 10th through 12th grades were invited to apply to NHS, if their grade point average was at least 90%. The inductees were selected by the chapter’s faculty committee based on their application scores in the four pillars of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Mrs. McCauliffe also reviewed how the members participated in multiple community service opportunities to showcase and expand their leadership skills while serving as role models through their values and actions throughout the year.
The current NJHS members each inducted a new member by reading their biography, lighting a candle and passing it along to the new member. Strike Out Cancer: A Day of Heart and Heroes at Kelts Field
Waterford April 27
The Tamarac, Waterford, Hoosic Valley, Saratoga Catholic, Hoosick Falls, Stillwater, Greenwich, and Mechanicville communities gathered at Kelts Baseball Field for a cause that warmed every heart — the annual Coaches vs. Cancer “Strike Out Cancer” event.
The weather may have been chilly, but the spirit of the day was anything but, as players, families, and fans came together in support of the American Cancer Society and to honor those touched by cancer.
The day’s events began with emotional frst pitches thrown by families and individuals whose lives have been impacted by cancer. Each throw was a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope — powerful moments that reminded everyone why they braved the weather.
Throughout the day, players from all eight
teams battled not only their opponents but the elements, playing with heart and determination that inspired everyone watching.
The event also featured a lively basket raffe and a 50/50 raffe, drawing crowds to the tents for chances to win prizes while supporting the cause. Food and hot drinks offered welcome comforts, and laughter could still be heard despite the cold.
Thanks to the unwavering support of the community and all participating teams, $3,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society. More importantly, a powerful message was sent: no amount of wind or rain could dampen the love, support, and determination to strike out cancer.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the teams, volunteers, families, and organizers who made this day unforgettable. It’s days like these that prove — together, we are stronger than cancer.

Ballston Spa BOE / Budget Presentation
by Vince Gallagher
The Ballston Spa Board of Education meeting took place on Wednesday, May 7 in the high school library. This meeting also included a special budget presentation and hearing for the 2026 fscal year. This was introduced by Brian Serviani, assistant superintendent of district business.
The total budget for the district for 2026 is $110,305,520 which represents a 2.9 percent increase over last year. Total revenue breaks down with 57.2 percent from taxes, 35,7 percent from state aid, 1.6 percent from the fund balance, and all others at 5.5 percent. State aid is projected with an increase at 2.7 percent, and with a limitation of pilot programs, this really pushes revenue farther into property taxes.
“When state aid doesn’t come through potentially as hoped, you’ve got to fnd other ways to deal with that and try to minimize the impact on taxes,” said Serviani.
With property taxes, the tax levy as proposed is set to increase by 4.4 percent, which is less than the increase allowed by the property tax cap formula at 5.2 percent.
Serviana also discussed increased revenue with instruction, including special education, which shows a considerate increase at 5.7

percent.
“That has to do with our increasing population with special education students and the expenses we’re experiencing,” said Serviana. “We’re actually having a diffcult time of fnding placements and teachers to do this.”
Another large increase is district transportation at 8.6 percent. This is in reaction to ongoing issues the district has in fnding bus drivers and mechanics.
District Superintendent Dr. Gianleo Duca then focused on staffng and program adjustments… and this year the district is not planning on any layoffs. However, Dr. Duca mentioned there are several positions that will be absorbed through retirements to avoid these layoffs.
“This includes fve high school teachers, two middle school teachers, and an elementary librarian,” said Duca.
Despite some tight budget situations, the district is also adding some programs, including girls golf, wrestling, and fag football.
“We’re also going to add unifed physical education at the high school,” said Duca.
The meeting then turned form the budget to community announcements. On Saturday May 17, the annual family color run will be held at the
district elementary complex. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. and volunteers are needed.
On May 19, the High School JV Spring Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the high school auditorium. Rowland’s Hollow: A Lost Crossroads
by Jim Richmond
Jim Richmond is an independent historian and volunteer at the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum. He is the author of two books on local history – War on the Middleline and Milton, New York: A New Town in a New Nation. Jim also edits and publishes This Week in Saratoga County History for the History Center, written by local History Buffs
development of Rowland’s Hollow and that is, it did not begin with these men. They were following in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents who frst settled in this area years before the frst dam was built to contain the frst mill pond.
Saratoga County has seen 9 generations come and go in the almost 235 years since it was carved out from Albany County in 1791.
Settlers moved in, established farms, mills, and small communities. Several of these communities have become villages, cities and suburban towns. Others have remained hamlets and become known as Forgotten Crossroads – still vibrant communities with a rich history of memories. Still others have disappeared altogether, no longer visible or remembered. They have become Lost Crossroads.
Rowland’s Hollow, also known as Rowland’s Mills, was one of those crossroads, a center of economic activity in its heyday. Now gone but should not be forgotten. In 1878, Nathaniel Sylvester in his History of Saratoga County describes it as follows.
This hamlet is on the eastern line of Milton, and not far from the village of Saratoga Springs. The place is named for H.R. Rowland, the proprietor of the saw-and grist-mills that are situated upon one of the branches of the Kayadrossera. Southeast of the mills there are also stone-works. Prince Wing resides at Rowland’s Mills, and is very extensively engaged in milling, burning lime, and farming. In these occupations he employs a large number of persons. Prince Wing is a native of the town of Greenfeld, his father having settled there at an early date.
Sylvester gives credit to two of the most well-known entrepreneurs responsible for the development of Rowland’s Hollow. But where did they come from? And how was it that they were able to obtain the resources to develop these mills? Sylvester hints at an important aspect of the
Isaac Rowland migrated from Pittstown, Rensselaer County with his father Oliver and brother Robert in 1802 soon after the birth of his son Hiram. Isaac began accumulating several pieces of land, beginning with the purchase at auction of property of his father, seized for nonpayment of debt in 1805. Oliver died in 1810, but son Isaac continued to add to his landholdings. Two purchases were in the 9th lot of the 16th allotment of the Kayderosseras Patent. It was in this area that Rowland’s Mills began to take shape, midway along Rowland Street between today’s Geyser Road and Rt 29. By 1824 the mills were already in place along the creek, as Isaac parlayed his land acquisitions into successful business enterprises.
By this time Isaac had considerable infuence in the community in addition to his business interests. In 1823 he became a subscriber to the newly formed Saratoga County Bank,[i] and his involvement in banking continued – Isaac was one of the original stockholders when Ballston Spa National Bank was formed in 1839, and served as a bank director from 1840-1845. Both his sons, Isaac and Hiram, followed their father in industrial pursuits. Isaac, Jr partnered with Chauncey Kilmer to erect a paper mill in Rock City Falls in 1840. Hiram worked alongside his father in Rowland’s Hollow, eventually taking over the family’s mills.
Three miles north of Rowland’s Mills another family had settled into the adjoining Town of Greenfeld. Prince Wing – grandfather of the quarryman and mill owner- moved to Greenfeld in 1786, becoming one of the frst settlers in the town. He purchased property and built his home and farm on what is now Wing Road. Grandson Prince, who was to play an important role in the development of Rowland’s Hollow, was born in 1806, and following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, continued the family’s agricultural tradition. His involvement in Rowland’s Hollow was to come later, after the mills had been operating for many years.
The death of Isaac, Sr in 1857 had a signifcant impact on the inhabitants of Rowland’s Hollow. He
was their patriarch. The Beer’s map of 1866 gives us a good snapshot of Rowland’s Hollow as the next generation took over. Hiram Rowland is prominently listed along with his sawmill and gristmill at the junction of the road and the creek. By this time Hiram was 70 years old, and he apparently sold this mill to Prince Wing, who one year later owned the gristmill, expanding his business interests in the Hollow where he also operated the stone quarry and lime kiln.
Wing may have been the owner, but the day-today operations were left to others. Joe Parmatier ran the gristmill throughout this period. He lived in the old stone house across the street from the gristmill. Patrick Leonard was the foreman for Wing’s quarry.
With all the focus on the sawmill and gristmill, it was the limestone rock itself that became the lifeblood of the Hollow in the period after the Civil War. The demand for limestone was high. It was processed in Wing’s lime kiln and used within the Hollow itself at Isaac Wager’s plaster mill where it was ground for use by the many farms in the area. The products of the Rowland Hollow quarry were also used to construct homes, churches and commercial buildings throughout the Saratoga and Ballston area. This vibrant community included stonecutters, millworkers, blacksmiths and lime burners whose children attended a small one room schoolhouse on the corner of Rowland Street and Grand Avenue.
The few photos we have today from the last quarter of the 19th century show a small bustling complex of mills, homes and bridges, many constructed using the Hollow’s limestone. These images represent the second generation of Rowland’s Hollow, the frst having given way as wood gives away to stone.
But this heyday was not destined to last. Soon after the turn of the century, the demand for limestone declined, as the plaster mill closed and paper manufacturers turned from straw to wood in their operations. The families that had been supported by the stonecutters and mill workers moved away, and Rowland’s Hollow was abandoned.
The limestone buildings could have, should have, lived on. But they did not. We are fortunate to have views of the Hollow as it existed in the 1930’s, long after the mills had been abandoned. Even then the buildings were in ruins. Over the years since, the buildings have disappeared, the limestone repurposed for other uses in the local area.
Today it is even harder to uncover the vestiges of the Hollow. Cars and quarry trucks race along Rowland Street. If you look quick you might catch a glimpse of the northeast corner of the stone grist mill, standing 30 feet tall. One wonders why even this remains. How many of us drive along roads in Saratoga County, passing by similar spots, unaware of the life that used to be in these Lost Crossroads?

The well-being of veterans is a priority here in Saratoga County. In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifce of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.
Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans fle their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Offce, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifce by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.

TCADDYSHACK LEAGUE
BY BRAD CONE
Caddyshackers Battle Back Nine
he Caddyshack league returned to Saratoga Lake Golf Club in Stillwater on Wednesday to compete in their Week Two matches.
It was a challenging night for the Caddyshackers as they traversed the daunting par-36 back nine. Generally thought of as the more diffcult of the two sides, the back nine really bared its teeth on Wednesday surrendering a mere 59 pars (the lowest league total for a night since Week 10 of the 2024 season) and allowing only eight players to post “net” (actual minus handicap) scores under par.
Undeterred, however, were reigning league champs Tim Monast and Kevin Reilly. The longtime friends combined for six pars as they tallied tremendous rounds of 45 net 32 and 46 net 34, respectively.
Those scores helped the duo overcome a solid 53 net 35 from one of their opponents (Dan Drake) as they won an incredible 9.5 of 11 points and jumped from last to frst place in the Division II standings.
Also moving up the Division II leaderboard were CCS alums Carter Benson and Dan Cross. The talented pair captured 7.5 points and moved to within one point of Tim and Kevin.
Carter grabbed three pars and Dan posted his frst birdie of the year as they tallied noteworthy rounds of 47 net 38 and 45 net 35, respectively.
Matt and Jake Fauler also kept themselves in the Division II mix with a strong seven-point showing. The father-son tandem was one of only two teams to post a team net score better than par.
Playing in his season opener after missing last week, son Jake picked up right where he left off with a sound 52 net 36 while father Matt bagged four pars (including three straight to end his round) en route to a 44 net 33.
Over in Division III, Trevor Marsh and Jeff
Vienneau continued their dominating start to the year. The Saratoga Lake staffers capitalized on an off-night from their competitors as they did not lose a single hole outright on their way to winning a near-perfect 10 out of 11 points.
Jeff led the way with a steady 49 net 35 (making him the only Caddyshacker to post net scores under par in both of the frst two weeks). The pair now enjoy an eye-popping 6.5-point lead after only two weeks of play.
Meanwhile in Division I, frontrunners Brad Colvin and Josh Wysocki maintained their hold on the top spot after hauling in seven points on Wednesday.
Brad tied for the night high with four pars while Josh tallied three pars and a birdie as the skilled sticks shot excellent rounds of 43 net 37 and 41 net 36.
Younger brothers Ty Colvin and Chad Wysocki were able to stay within a point of the leaders after grinding out a 7-4 victory of their own. After dropping the frst two holes, the duo won four of the next fve to turn the tide of the match.
In another highlight coming out of Division I, rookies Mark and Chris LeFever won their frst career match with a hard-fought 6.5-4.5 victory.
The father-son team was down 4.51.5 with only three holes to play before sweeping the fnal three holes and eking out low net by a mere
stroke. The LeFevers spurred their comeback by playing those fnal three holes in an impressive combined two-over-par.
Rounding out the night’s top scores were Bob Lang and Logan Mancari. Bob posted three pars on his way to a nice 43 net 34 while Logan was one shot off his back nine personal best as he tallied a 46 net 34.
Bob Lang added to his strong night by capturing Wednesday’s individual contest. The retired Hoosick Falls educator stuffed his tee shot on the par-3 14th hole to an impressive nine feet six inches. Fellow Caddyshacker Tim Monast sponsored the competition.
Per usual, the Player of the Week selection committee had no shortage of worthy options to choose from. Ultimately teammates Tim Monast and Kevin Reilly shared the honor. Their leagueleading rounds not only gave them a 9.5-point showing, but also catapulted them from the cellar into frst place in the Division II standings.
With two weeks now under their belts, the competition promises to start heating up for the Caddyshackers.
Trevor and Jeff enjoy an intimidating lead in Division III, but with 11 points up for grabs each week things can change quickly.
Meanwhile in Division II, the top four teams are separated by only two points. And in Division I, the difference between frst and last place is only fve points!
Tune in next week as the march to the 2025 league title continues. And as always, check out the league website at www.caddyshackleague. com for stats, matchups, and more info.

other churches’ funeral rites: “With death life is changed, not taken away.”
Pentecost Sunday, this year June 8, brings an ending, but is also a powerful beginning. We read in Acts 2:1-11: “They were all in one place together. Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it flled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues of fre, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. They were all flled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”
We have read earlier that they were scared and hiding – while very soon they would be sent outwards to many places. But Luke does not want to us to forget that the Spirit always unites us as one, no matter where we are. The Spirit emboldens us to do what would be otherwise unthinkable.
Pentecost made fearful men go forth and proclaim the Good News of Jesus.
Reigning champs Kevin Reilly (L) and Tim Monast (R) jumped into frst place in the Div. II standings.

The frst game at Mechanicville’s new feld on the school campus was a success as Mechanicville was victorious. Plenty of highlights by the host team. After a 123 top of the frst inning, Mechanicville came to bat in the bottom of the frst. Riley La Pierre drove a line drive to the left centerfeld gap for the frst base hit on the new feld after a couple of walks and a pickoff attempted third Mechanicville got his frst run.
And the second ending Mechanicville batted around scoring nine times highlighted by singles by Burton , Neddo, Buechner doubles by La Pierre Pane and Loiacono. Burton came up again and belted a two run home or the left feld. In the third inning, Lapierre, Pane, Burton, and Netto all collected hits again plating seven more runs. In the fourth inning, Loiacono, Horan, Toledo all singled capping off the scoring for the host team
and the fourth inning for Valley. Valcik broke up the no-hitter with a well placed single in the 56 hole.
Rogers was on point with their location recording 10 strikeouts with no walks. Every player contributed with a hit or defensive gym in the feld. Liberty fashed the glove at third Burton with the running catching right feld, where the defensive highlights. It was nice to play valley in the opening game on the new feld. Valley is Mechanicville’s neighbor and their coaches the league up as well. What a night we had there were many alums at the game, former coaches, plenty of administrators. We had a hotdog cart from Lou Walsh and an ice cream truck. Larry Grayson called the game for us and brought good energy. Special thanks to everyone who made the night a success.
