WSHP Seeks Sponsors for Local Bed Build
ith a Four Church Ecumenical Bed Build upcoming in our community this summer, sponsors are being sought to raise the funds needed to provide a number of single and bunk beds for children in need throughout our area. “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town” is the mission of the international organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace, and here in Mechanicville, our local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, headed by Jim Welch, has held numerous builds throughout the capital district area. It has been accomplished here in our own hometown with builds held for the past five years
at St. Luke’s on the Hill. This year, however, it was decided that all four of our local churches would join in, thereby providing smiles, happiness and comfort to even more boys and girls. All Saints on the Hudson, United Methodist Church and Commitment Church have joined with St. Luke’s on the Hill in a spirit of community unity.

Carrie Woerner: In the early 1920s, my grandfather graduated from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany with a degree in mechanical engineering. But by the mid-1920s, Germany’s economy was unraveling. Inflation soared. Jobs disappeared.
Early in 1925, my great-grandparents had already emigrated to America. A few months later, my grandfather followed, determined to build a better life for his wife and young son, Heinz.
He settled in Elizabeth, New Jersey, worked for his uncle, and soon sent for his family. In 1926, my grandmother, their son Heinz, and her sister sailed for New York Harbor—much like many of your own families may have

Borrowed the recipe from Fred’s Meat Market...so delicious!
PRIME RIB
I used this recipe from Fred’s Meat Market because I had never made a prime rib before. Ours came out perfect!
All beef roasts should be seasoned before cooking, sprinkled with lots of salt and pepper, then rub with olive oil. Cook in a shallow baking pan or on a wire rack. Do not cover or add water. Preheat oven to 450 degrees, place roast in oven and bake at 450 for 45 minutes. Then reduce oven temperature to 300 degrees and continue to cook at 300 for approximately 15 minutes per pound, but you must use a meat thermometer to check the roast’s internal temp for perfect results. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the roast…it’s ready to come out when temp reaches degrees listed below.
• 123º Rare (cool red center)
• 130º Medium Rare (warm red center)
• 135º Medium
• 139º Medium Well
• 144º Well Done
** Remember…check temp earlier rather than later and season well. Let it rest 20 minutes before carving.

Haunted Canfield Casino
Saratoga Springs, July 2
Atour of the “Haunted” Canfield Casino was conducted by the Historical Society. The Casino was the gambling hub of Saratoga Springs gambling from 1870-1910. It is located in Congress Park.
The tour hostess related incidents which had happened in recent years. Among them were the smell of perfume which no one was wearing, a child’s laughter, the tinkling of crystal, people tripping over a flat floor, as if being shoved. She related the experience of the man who open the casino only to find the roulette wheel spinning first thing in the morning. Or the smell of cigar smoke on the gambling rooms of the 2nd floor. None of these indidents occred during the tour although on visitor thought she had been pushed and another thought they smelled the cigar smoke. Who knows?
The founder of the Casino was William Morrissey a politician and gambler who had many wealthy friends. Among them were Jay Gould, William R. Travers and Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. With their help he was one of the co-founders of the Saratoga Racetrack which was built in 1863. Following the end of the Civil War, in 1866 he created the Saratoga Clubhouse which was later named the Canfield Casino. Among those who patronized the Casino were the Whitneys, Vanderbilts and J. P. Morgan family. Gamblers included Diamond Jim Brady, and his paramour Lillian Russell. There was even a dining hall which seated a thousand people at a time.

The Fish Story Episode
A Short Story Based on True Adventure by David Petronis ~~~~~ Chapter Three ~~~~~
Larry was up the creek with his paddle, not a sound to be heard. Now this is peaceful, I thought, as I found my fly rod and a tin of flies. I began the short walk to the Doctor’s camp next door. When I’ve been here I’ve never seen anyone at his camp and Larry told me he hadn’t seen anyone there for years. But it was always kept in good shape, even the grass was neat.
A three-foot wide, gently winding wood plank sidewalk traversed from the right side of Larry’s camp, through the woods and ended behind the Doctor’s fairly large boathouse. Inside I could see a dusty mahogany speedboat that was suspended above the water. Looked like it hadn’t seen use in years. I wondered why they simply didn’t sell the thing.
I saw some movement in the water just beyond the front of the attached dock. It was a loon, swimming and now a quick dive. I thought, great, he’s after my fish. The only sound was the slight splash as he went under. I looked at the camp ahead. It was big, two stories and an attic. It was actually a house. Dark green shutters were clad and locked, covering the windows.
Moss grew on the cedar shake siding and even on the slate roof. Big trees kept the sun from drying up the constant dew. A large wrap around porch started from the side I approached and continued to the front of the camp where a commanding view of the lake could be had. It was a wonderful place, peaceful, quiet, and serene. I could see the rock jetty and the big tree where I wanted to cast a few flies from. I proceeded to the water’s edge.
spoke again.
“Don’t be sorry. Don’t worry. If you want to fish off my rock, go ahead,” he offered. “I knew your father. I sold all that land to my helper and he sold some to your father. We’re almost family.”
After swallowing my heart, and hearing his soothing words, I approached the stairs to the porch. “Thank you,” I said. I took a deep breath.
“Did I startle you?” he asked “I’m sorry. Don’t see many folks around here much.”
“Actually, I’m a friend of Larry Higgins. He owns the camp now. I guess it’s his father you refer to.” I finally managed to start to relax and be able to speak. “It was so quiet and I didn’t expect anyone here. So I guess you startled me.”
“I seem to have a habit of doing that lately. Again, I’m sorry,” he said.
“We were out fishing this morning and had no luck at all, so I thought I’d just relax a bit and cast out a few flies here,” I explained. “Do you own this place? I heard you were a doctor.”
“Yes, on both counts. I guess I’m retired now. I don’t get around much anymore,” he offered.
“What a great place,” I confided. “Whenever we came here we never seemed to see anyone here. At your camp, I mean. I guess you don’t get up here much.”
“Here, have a seat and talk a spell,” the old man motioned with his hand to an old bench on the porch. “I’m Doctor Kramer, and pleased to meet you,” extending his right hand for a greeting.
“Hello there, fine morning isn’t it?” I almost crapped right there on the spot! The voice came from the front porch. Bushes had blocked my view as I walked to the water but now I turned and saw this neat old gentleman, relaxing in a rocker on the porch.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t think anyone was here. We’re at camp next door and I thought, I mean, I wanted to…” before I could finish the man
Taking his hand shake, I replied “I’m Dave, Dave Petronis. I live in upstate New York and run a Gun Shop. We sell antiques and collectables, too.” His hand felt cold, I guess a lot of older folks have poor circulation. And it was dark and cool on the porch. I sat down, leaning my fly rod against the porch rail. “Larry rowed his boat down the shore and I thought I’d try my luck here. Going to be here long?” I asked.
Gazing out into the lake, Doctor Kramer replied, “I don’t think so. I’ll be going soon.” He looked at me and asked, “What did you say you did? Sold, collectables?”
“Yes, all kinds of things,” I replied. “I enjoy history and I collect military things. I like world war two stuff.”
“Did you know there used to be a German Prisoner of War camp over there?” he asked. He was pointing across the lake to where the ▶
▶ Seboomook Campground now stood. There is a small grocery store and gift shop there that supplies the summer tourists. When I was there with Larry last year I recall seeing photos of the old Prisoner of War Camp. I guess they stuck it up here to be out of the mainstream. Any escapee from there would just run into moose and a million acres of trees back then.
“Yes, I do recall hearing that.” I told him. “Were you around here then?” The conversation was piquing my interest.
“Oh sure, my father built this place back in ’39. I helped a little. My father and I celebrated my 10th birthday here. He had the only camp on this side of the lake. He started with a small fishing camp on an island in North Bay. He had one of the first aeroplanes that landed on water, you know. He was a doctor too, my father.” The old man took a deep breath and looked into the lake expanse. “As a boy, I remember the camp … and the prisoners.”
He leaned forward in his rocker and gazed over the lake. It looked like he was trying to get a better view. “There were two high fences of barbed wire that surrounded about half a dozen log houses. I see them quite well. The guards took the German POW’s out into the woods to cut building logs and firewood. My father sometimes visited the camp as a Doctor. Occasionally I went along but they never let me go in. He would bring me all sorts of things he got from the prisoners though. War booty, he called it.”
“What did he bring you?” I asked. Now I was really getting interested.
“All kinds of things. Things they wore on their uniforms. Sleeve insignia and collar tabs. I especially remember this wonderful German Cross. I wondered how the owner won it. And why he gave it away. ‘Cigarettes,’ my father said. ‘You could own Germany for a truckload of cigarettes. Why shoot them, give them their cigarette,’ he said. He brought home lots of things,” continued Doctor Kramer.
Of course, now I had to find out, “Still got that stuff?” I asked. In a million years I wouldn’t hear the answer I was looking for, I thought.
“No, I don’t have it anymore,” replied my good doctor. “Probably it’s all still on the island.”
“What island is that?” I boldly inquired
“I used to always go to the island, I liked being there alone,” he explained. “I had my little runabout and everything was still there, even though my father built this new place. I had my treasures there, and my secrets. I tied a rope to this big overhanging tree and swung from a rock to jump into the water.”
“What were they?” I asked. “Your treasures? You mean your German things?” I looked at the Doctor. He gazed as if he was searching deep in a long lost memory bank.
“Yes, my treasures,” he finally replied. “I had this secret hiding place, three boards in front of the fireplace. I would lift one up and keep my Army cans in there.”
“Where is your island?” I asked. I said it, but I don’t believe I said it. Here I am prying personal information out of this fine old man.
“At North Bay. We had our fishing camp there, you know, 1945 it was. I’ve got to go now. Got to get back,” he said.
“Oh, you’re leaving today?” I asked. “I was going to ask whether we might go on a treasure hunt and locate your old Army cans.” I sometimes bite my tongue after I speak but nothing ventured nothing gained I thought.
“No, I can’t do that,” he smiled. “But if you can find them you can have them.” He got up and looked out over the lake. “Got to be going, now.”
I got up, grabbed my pole and walking toward the steps I said, “Goodbye, Doctor. Very pleasant meeting you. Maybe I’ll look for your island.” I descended the steps and looked out towards where the old camp was. I turned around to say goodbye again, but to find he already had gone. I guess he went inside. I looked at my watch. I’d been only a few minutes so I figured I’d use the Doctor’s invitation to fish off his rock.
Nothing was hitting any flies. My mind was on that island anyway. I was in one of the only sunny spots in front of the camp and it was starting to get warm. I decided to sit a spell and lean against the big old tree. The shining sun warmed my body as I thought about what Doctor Kramer said.
I was thinking that something was banging on my leg or biting it! I awoke with a start! Something was kicking my foot. “How they bite’n?” I heard. “Working too hard, are you? Can’t keep the pace?” Looking up I could see Larry grinning inquisitively. “Oh man,” I uttered. “My back is sore. Damn, I can’t believe I fell asleep. I wonder if the Doctor left?”
“What Doctor?” quizzed the Captain. “What you been smokin’ out here?”
Larry knows I don’t smoke, and I sure as hell don’t take smoking drugs. Now my mind was focusing much better and I got up, thinking I heard my back snap into place. “Doctor Kramer,”
I said, while I brushed the seat of my pants. “Your neighbor. He was here and we were talking about how he sold his land and the old POW Camp. He said he had to go, so I guess he left.”
“Doesn’t look like anybody was here,” noticed Larry. “The house is all shuttered up.”
I looked at the front porch. His rocker was gone. I guess he put it away and locked up. He probably saw me snoozing under the tree and just left, I thought. “Well, he was here,” I said. “Have any luck fishing the shore?”
“No, not a strike,” explained Larry. We both started back to camp, back up the wooden sidewalk. “I never seen a soul here,” he said. “In fact I thought the old doctor died.”
“Well, I guess not,” I replied. “But he did tell me a great story. Do you know where North Bay is?” I asked.
“Sure, I’ve fished there before. Way on the other side of the lake. Why?” Asked Larry. We were just about back at camp and I needed the outhouse. “I’ll tell you later.”

The Fish Story Episode
A Short Story Based on True Adventure
by David Petronis ~~~~~ Chapter Four ~~~~~
After a substantial deposit in the job bank out back, I found the Captain fine-tuning the boat engine. He looked up and asked, “You ready to get some fish?”
“Yeah, sure!” I answered. “How about we try North Bay?” Now that made Larry look at me with the puzzled look of a pregnant virgin. No one ever suggests where to fish.
Calmly, he inquired, “North Bay? Do you even know where North Bay is? What brought that up?” Before I could reply he blurted out, “Oh, right! The Doctor told you where the fish are!”
“No,” I hesitated… “The Doctor told me where he buried his treasure. Let’s go find it!” At this point I was hooked better than any fish we might find.
“What! Are you Nuts? There was no Doctor. There’s been no one here in years and you were pro’bly dreamin’! Jump in if you want to go fishin’ … an’ throw off that line.” Larry seemed a bit miffed.
Tough! I thought. Rather firmly I replied, “The Doctor was there. He told me about an island where he had a fishing camp in North Bay. He said he had a secret spot near the fireplace for his stuff and if I could find it, I could have it. What do you think about trying our luck in North Bay?”
Larry just stood in the boat looking at me with a blank stare, like Captain Bligh at a mutineer. “Ah, what the hell. Good a place as any. Now let’s get going.” I think I heard him murmuring something to himself as I unlashed the bowline and gave the boat a shove away from the dock. In I jumped and he started the engine. “Set course for North Bay, Matey!” I bellowed. “We’re off for buried treasure.”
After I heard something like, ‘I think you’re loosin’ it,’ Larry and I had an in depth discussion of the whole Doctor thing. I again explained all I
could remember as we headed for the islands of North Bay.
“You know, there’s about twenty islands out there.” Now Larry had a little treasure seeker in his voice. “I don’t ever remember seeing a camp on any of them. How you gonna know which is the right one?”
“Like gold. I’ll know it when I see it.” I replied. “I think it’s more like, gold is where you find it, and you ain’t gonna find no gold on those islands.” Offered Larry.
“Just keep rowing, Captain! We’ll make land soon,” I quipped. With that artful comment digested, Larry looked at me and pointed ahead. There it was, North Bay. And he was right, there were a lot of islands.
“Which one, Admiral?” Larry uttered with a big smile. “Wharr’s the gold?”
“Drive closer, James. We’ll have a look-see,” I said. I was studying the group of islands that lay before us. Most just looked like treed bumps in a pond. But there were several that were big enough for a nice camp. I picked the closest and asked Larry to head for it. The water was getting shallow in spots with some of the rocky shoal emerging from the water’s depths.
“Check the depth,” instructed the Captain. “These rocks come up fast.” I got up and leaned forward and to port, looking over the side of the boat. I could see a channel going towards the island I wanted to check.
“Take it slow, right up towards that big tree,” I used a sweeping motion with my arm and pointed to where I thought we should try. Larry maneuvered the big craft right where I wanted it.
“If I can land on that big rock, I’ll rope the boat to that tree,” I offered.
“I’ll get close. You jump. I’ll pick you up when I see you waving.” Larry said. “I don’t want to get banged up on these rocks. I’ll let out a line and watch for you.”
Good plan, I thought. The rock was getting close and I got up on the bow. Larry drifted the boat slowly to it and I stepped off. In the same motion I pushed the boat back into the channel. “See you in a bit,” I said.
The island wasn’t too big, but it had a lot of under growth. I moved inland a few yards and looked for a plan of attack. I figured the camp would be near the water, perhaps on a high point. The easiest thing I thought was to go inland so I could still see the water’s edge and simply make a circle back. I checked my watch and started out. It was just past two o’clock.
After bruising a knee, getting leg scratches that felt like claw swipes and nearly poking out my left eye on a low branch, I made it back to where I started in about a half hour. No camp, no remnants of a camp. I saw Larry drifting by; out about fifty yards. I waved with both arms and
yelled his name.
In a minute he spied me and raised his arm in recognition. Then he held up a fish. Great, I thought, at least he’s happy.
On the way in he yelled, “Find anything?” The boat was getting real close and I just concentrated on getting back on board. I made a quick leap to the bow and my momentum pushed the boat back a bit. Larry started backing out the channel.
“Nothing here,” I said. “I see you had some luck though.” I was glad Larry caught a fish, after all that’s why we drove here. “Great color in that trout,” I said. “Think you can manage to land me on that one over there?” I asked. I pointed to the next large island I wanted to explore.
“You ain’t had enough prospectin’ yet?” Larry quizzed. “The fish are bite’n at least. I had a few strikes before I got that one.”
“Humor me, Larr,” I said. “There are only a few of these Islands big enough for a camp. It’s got to be here.”
“Are you sure it’s here?” Larry asked. “Well, we’ve still got the afternoon and at least there’s fish here. We’ll check out a few more.”
I felt much better hearing Larry say that. I know he really likes to fish and he doesn’t get up here very often. And now I’ve got him going on this wild goose chase.
We came up to the next island and saw a tall tree tilting its huge branch over the water’s edge. We steered toward it but there was no place to land. A big boulder came straight from the water and stood five or six feet high. The rest of the shoreline was low and rocky. With this ice cold water I wanted to step on dry land and not do any wading. “Let’s circle around and see if there’s a good spot to dock,” I said.
Just beyond the tree was a nice little beach, a rarity around here, but it was much too shallow for the boat. I’d need to do a Jesus impression for about ten feet to get to land without getting wet. We continued our circling of the island.
The rest of the shoreline was more of the same, low water with a rocky bottom. There was no way a boat this size could drift safely to shore. Larry put-putted just above neutral, as we looked for a place to park our rig. Coming back around to where we started Larry asked, “Where to now?” His question affirmed that this place was evidently not suited for a fishing camp.
“Let’s try that one,” I pointed ahead. Larry nodded, but before revving up he let out his trolling line again. Why waste fishing opportunities. He just sat down in the Captain’s chair and eased the engine into higher revolutions when his reel sounded, “Whirr…” In a flash he grabbed the rod, “Take the wheel!” He bellowed. “I’ve got a hell of a fish.”
Larry landed another beautiful lake trout, about fifteen inches, and fat! I thought maybe ▶
North Bay wasn’t the worst place for a fish camp.
At that moment it was like lightning hitting a dead tree; the proverbial light bulb flashing, an exploding rocket over the Aurora Borealis! I turned around and looked back toward the island.
This picture postcard image focused in front of my eyes. A young lad was leaping from a big rock and swinging over the water by a rope tied to that big overhanging tree. His little skiff easily beached onto shore. That camp was just beyond that tree line! It must be, I wished.
“Larry, that’s it! That’s where the camp is. Go back to that beach. I think I’m going to get wet.” I yelled.
I told Larry about what the Doctor said about the rock and the tree and he turned the boat around and headed for the small beach. “I can feel it, Larr. I know it’s there.” I said.
We drifted in sideways and I looked at the lake bottom; sandy and about a foot deep. “I’m going to wade in,” I said. “Where’s that towel?”
Larry pointed to a large white towel we took along to dry off with after washing fish slime from our hands. Luckily it didn’t see too much use. I stuffed it in a plastic bag. I took off my shoes and socks and stuffed them in also. “Close your eyes,” I told Larry as I took off my pants and rolled them up.
I then proceeded to climb over the rear of the boat onto the platform that stuck out from the stern just about level with the water. I stuck a toe in. The water was cold! “Jump in!” Larry curtly suggested. So I did. My legs were instantly numb to my knees. My feet sank down into the cold sand. I held my pants and the bag over my head and waded to shore. Oh, that was cold!
I placed my things and my butt on a rock and dried off. I dressed quickly. “You coming?” I asked. “Not likely!” Larry replied.
“I may be a while, this brush is thick,” I said as I walked to the edge of the tree line. It was only about ten feet back from shore. I peered in.
“I’ve got no appointments. I’ll be here when you find your way back out,” Larry promised. He threw the one small anchor off the stern and did the same from the bow end. “I’ll do some casting and catch our dinner,” he said.
I found kind of a hole thru the bramble that grew up from a shelf which rose above the sandy beach. I contorted around some small trees and thorned briars and came to a clear area.
There in front of me was the camp! At least, I guess, what passed as a fishing camp back in 1940 or so. It looked about ten feet by ten with a hole that once held a door. Most of the peaked roof was now inside. Only reason it wasn’t totally collapsed were the growth of trees entwining the remaining roof section and log walls. It didn’t look safe… or inviting.
I could see the remains of a stone chimney, probably from the fireplace the Doctor mentioned. Thorn bushes blocked the doorway, as did a small pine tree. I needed a tool, I thought.
I worked my way back to the shore and yelled to Larry who was just casting his spinner off the stern. “Hey Larr! You got an ax or anything? I found what used to be a camp but it’s really over grown.”
“Hold on,” Larry acknowledged. He reeled in his line without success. “I’ve got a machete. That any good?” He asked.
“Great! Toss it over. Don’t happen to have a flashlight, do you?” I inquired. Once inside it looked pretty dark in there, I thought.
Larry found a flashlight and tossed it to me. Then he tossed the machete onto the sand beside me. “What’s in there?” He asked.
“I’ve no idea. It looks spooky enough though. I need this to chop some bushes,” I said as I picked up the long blade. “See you in a bit.” I again wiggled back thru the bushes.
The heavy machete made short work of the tree and brambles. I turned on the flashlight and peered in the doorway. No bears anyway, I thought. As I put a foot inside I heard, “Watch out for rattle snakes!” I jumped back as Larry’s yell echoed from inside the walls. “Son of a bitch!” I yelled back. I could picture Larry falling out of the boat laughing. I grinned to myself.
Again, I took a step inside. I could see a small, stone fireplace and what used to be a floor in front of it. The remnants of a moldy old mattress were bundled up in one corner. I wondered how many thousand mice used it for a home. Old soda and beer bottles littered the area I could see. The collapsed roof covered most of what used to be a floor. The rest had small trees and bushes growing between rotted boards.
I took another step. Crunch, my foot went thru the board and stopped on the ground below. I fell to one knee. “Shit,” I uttered. I stood up and pulled my leg out of the hole I made. My shoe and pants were covered with green moss and slime. “Nice trip!” I said to myself.
I was more careful and stepped lightly on a few of the remaining boards. They kind of just oozed out water and loam. I could barely see the floor in front of the fireplace. I shined my light there. That is the place I remembered the Doctor saying he hid his loot. There was nothing left to the floor except leaves, moss and pine needles. I slowly moved to the circle of light.
I stuck the machete down into the debris. It went in easily, almost up to the handle. I did it again in another spot. Nothing! Damn, I know there’s something here, I thought. I moved a bit closer to what once was the hearth to this old stone heater.
I stuck the blade in again. It stopped, just beyond the leaves. I could feel something hard. A rock, I thought? I used a piercing motion up and down. I heard a metallic ring! I found something. I used the wide blade of the machete like a shovel and cleared away the forest debris and moss. Red worms were shoveled out, curled up white larvae from some kind of bug; a multilegged red creature slithered past my foot. I now remembered, I hate bugs!
Soon I could see part of a rusty corner. I moved more debris. I could see what appeared to be the size of a .50 caliber ammo can. The Doctor’s ‘army box,’ I thought. I started to uncover a second one next to the first. I felt around the area with the machete and determined these were the only two here. I finally dug them to where I could see the remnants of the old latches on top of each. I reached down and pulled them up, one by one. They were still covered in dirt and slime and carefully, I took each one out the door. Mission accomplished! The treasure was found! “I’ve got two ammo boxes!” I yelled to Larry
Not knowing whether he heard me or not, I knocked most of the dirt off the two boxes and lifted them by their rusty handles. One was fairly heavy the other was not. I brought one thru the briars back to the beach. Larry was watching for me as I appeared. “What cha find?” He let droll out in a loud voice.
OCelebrating the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution:
Veterans in the Town of Schaghticoke as of the 1840 Census
by Chris Kelly, town historian of Schaghticoke
ne of the last governmental recording of veterans of the American Revolution occurred in the 1840 US Census. The census only listed households with the name of the head of household, plus numbers, sex, and age of the other members. One extra box that could be checked was for Revolutionary or other Military service- with space to write in the name and age of the man. In Schaghticoke in 1840, there were five old men who had served in the Revolution. Who were they?
for a couple of months, receiving an honorable discharge on January 1, 1783. So all of his service was after the fighting in the war was over. It would be interesting to know how young John Welch ended up in a New York regiment, but I do not know about his family and upbringing.
The first was John Welch, age 77. John Welch was the head of a household in the 1840 census, probably including his wife, plus 1 male aged 20-29, one female aged 10-14, and three females aged 15-19. The young people are young enough to be grandchildren rather than children, but we don’t know for sure. Four people in the household worked in manufacturing or trade, which means that at least two of those employees were women. They probably worked in a local mill.
John applied for a Revolutionary War pension in 1832. This gives us quite a bit of information about him. He was born in 1763 in West Windsor, Connecticut. Though the pension application says he served in the Connecticut line, that is in one of the Connecticut Provincial Regiments- “the Regulars”- his testimony does not reflect that. He says he enlisted in Colonel Marinus Willett’s New York Regiment on April 1, 1782. Marinus Willett (1740-1830) served as an officer in several New York State regiments during the Revolution.
After the war, he moved often, spending most of the time in Ballston Spa. He also lived in Norwich, Chenango County, and Palmertown, Milton, and Malta in what became Saratoga County. John married a woman named Dorcas in 1816 in Ballston. According to an ancestry. com family tree, she was Dorcas Gardner, born in Rhode Island in 1784. I am not sure about the size of their family, as the same tree has one of the four born 11 years before their marriage- so I won’t cite that.
John and family lived for the first time in Schaghticoke from 1828-1833, and they were also in town, more permanently, when he died in 1841. Orrin Pier of the village of Schaghticoke preached his funeral sermon on December 5, 1841. John was buried in the Old Schaghticoke Cemeterythe one between the Catholic Cemetery and Elmwood Cemetery on Stillwater Bridge Road.
John served at a small fort in Ballston for several months, part of the garrison, and spent time cutting trees around the fort to ensure a field of fire. He then went to the Schenectady Barracks
I have not found widow Dorcas in the 1850 census, but she was living with her son Nathan, born in 1819, as of the 1855 census for Schaghticoke. She was called Dorothy in that census. Nathan and wife Clarissa, had four children, one named John. Dorcas died in 1860, aged 76, and is buried next to John. Nathan stayed on in the town of Schaghticoke.
Next week another aged war veteran. The illustration if of Colonel Marinus Willett, painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Ralph Earl.
This Week in Saratoga County History
John Brotherson was Late
by Dave Waite
Dave Waite has written many articles on upstate New York history, and has recently published two anthologies, Thrilling Attractions and Weird Wonders, and A Place called Pauley. Dave is also the videographer for several films produced by the Saratoga County History Center, including the Forgotten Crossroads series. He can be reached at davewaitefinearts@gmail.com
Alot of things could be said about John Brotherson, but those who knew him well were unlikely to include “he would be late to his own funeral.” Yet in the middle of the day on October 17, 1887, a group of people waited patiently on a little knoll in Ballston Spa’s Village Cemetery, and he was nowhere to be found.
John had passed away two days earlier at the home of Dr. Charles Inslee Pardee, a relative with whom he spent the winter months in his later years. His death was an unfortunate accident by asphyxiation, caused by John inadvertently leaving a gas valve on when he retired for the night.
At his passing at eighty-seven, John Brotherson was the senior member of the Saratoga County Bar and a practicing attorney for over fifty years. Brotherson’s career in law began in the city of Schenectady in 1821, and he practiced there until he ended his partnership with John Cochran in 1841 and relocated to Ballston Spa. During his years in Schenectady, he participated in that city’s debating club and served as the secretary of the Schenectady County Temperance Society. It was during his time in Schenectady that he published a book of interest to other attorneys, the Executors’ and Administrators’ Instructor, which contained the law and necessary forms related to the topics noted in its title.
When he found time, John enjoyed the sport of fox and raccoon hunting. Considered an expert at the pursuit of fox, after old age prevented him from following the sport, the residents of Ballston Center noted a dramatic increase in intrusions into their hen houses by these predators. His knowledge of the sport even carried into his law cases, as in one where he represented a party whose hunting dog had been shot by a farmer when it entered a sheep yard while following a fox trail. Brotherson won the case with a judgment of fifty dollars for damages plus court costs against the defendant.
Known to be tenacious when pressing his cause in the courthouse, his summations could sometimes be so abusive as to elicit an attack from his opponents. In one instance during a
Schenectady court case in 1841, Lewis Peck, said to have been “goaded into madness,” threw off his overcoat and landed two or three blows on Brotherson.
This willingness to win at all costs resulted in his pursuing cases that stretched over decades, the most notable being a lawsuit against Emmanuel Consalus to recover costs from several litigations. This suit, continued even after the death of Consalus in 1872, was noted in some obituaries as having been the sole focus of
Brotherson’s legal work for the last fifteen years of his life.
John Brotherson was born in Charlton in 1806. A lifelong bachelor, beyond his law career and fox hunting, one of his main interests was spiritualism. During his lifetime, spiritualism had found a considerable following in the village, with John as the leader in the local society. Other prominent members of the village who were involved in the society included mill owner Benjamin J. Barber and Samuel Hides of the Hides-Franklin Spring.
Only this humorous story about John Brotherson’s personal involvement in spiritualism was ever recorded, published by the Weekly Saratogian on June 23, 1881:
Mr. B. is a firm believer in the Spiritualistic faith. While boarding with Mr. Brown on the hill, he was sitting one night at a basement window, which was even with the ground. Suddenly, he heard three or four thumps on the glass. John told the other inmates of the room to keep quiet, as he wished to converse with the spirits outside. He went into a trance and remained so for twenty
minutes, and said he had a talk with a most beautiful creature. Upon going outside, Mr. Brown found two large sized toads flopping against the window in their efforts to catch flies that had been attracted there by the light inside.
The most well-known account of spiritualism connected to Ballston Spa is that of Samuel Hides and the discovery of his famous spring. It was during a séance that the spirit of Benjamin Franklin was said to have told Hides that he would find an abundant mineral spring if he would only dig down 715 feet at a certain spot on his property. When the hole reached the predicted depth, a huge geyser shot high into the air and continued to provide a source of mineral water for years afterward as the Hides-Franklin Spring.
The spiritualist society in Ballston Spa, which boasted at one time as many as eighty members, gained a prominent presence in the village in 1876 when society member Benjamin J. Barber erected a 200-seat meeting place on Bath Street that was named “Centennial Hall.” By Brotherson’s death in 1887, the building had fallen into disuse and became a storehouse for the American Hide and Leather Company.
The remains of John Brotherson finally arrived in Ballston Spa on the six p.m. train and was met by his relatives and a large group of friends. His interment was held the same evening in the Ballston Spa Village Cemetery by the aid of lamps and lanterns, which presented a “weird and impressive scene,” according to the October 18th Albany Argus. Members of the Saratoga County Bar at Ballston were the pallbearers at the funeral. The services were conducted by Rev. Brooke Gwathmey White, a Protestant Episcopal minister from Jacksonville, Florida, who was in the area visiting friends.
Two weeks later, on the evening of October 30, 1887, Christian Science founder Mary Baker Eddy held a “conversation” with John Brotherson open to the public at the Saratoga Springs town hall. The results of this conversation with John’s spirit were never revealed.
In 1903, John Brotherson’s stepsister, Mrs. Anna Attocha, erected a 25-foot-tall monument on the Ballston Spa Village Cemetery Brotherson Plot in memory of her brother. Also buried in the Brotherson Plot is John’s sister Eliza, his stepmother Alice Odell Brotherson, and his stepsisters Aleta & Sarah. Anna would be laid to rest in this plot the year after the monument was erected.

the human heart, through simple everyday daily living.
Other aspects of human actions in faith we will reflect on as the season proceeds will include: our hands; kneeling- standing - walking; striking the breast; steps, doors; candles; holy water;
fire, ashes; incense; light and heat; bread and wine; the altar, chalice, paten; blessings chalice; bells; time – AM, midday, evening; and yes, traditional ending the day, night prayer.
The Sign of the Cross is the prelude to prayer familiar to many Christian believers, in many parts of the world, for many centuries. However: with many such things, it can too easily become almost mechanically routine -- a small cramped, often hurried gesture that gives no notion of its deep meaning.
Let’s make it (even starting with oneself, right now...) as it began among believers, a larger, unhurried sign: from forehead to breast, from shoulder to shoulder, consciously feeling how it pulls together our whole selves: our thoughts, our attitudes, indeed our body and soul, every part of us at once
– AND that in the process dedicates (better, consecrates) us, for what we are about to do or continue this day; what we hope to do – and be — for others.
For Christian believers it stands as a ... an ironiic ... sign and reminder of their newness of life, that perhaps we have too often only “hopedabout”... maybe even wondering whether that really is possible...
– Well, in Christ, that really is possible. Centuries of countless folks are “walking proof” of that!
On the cross, Jesus redeemed mankind, in a profound and powerful sense. By embracng it,

he still sanctifies men and women to the last shred and fiber of their – his – being. Signing oneself with the Sign of the Cross before we pray is a way to collect and compose ourselves, and fix our minds and hearts, and wills, upon loving beyond merely believing in the Lord of All: the Lord God – standing in front of us, inviting our belief and trust. So many folks reflexively make that simple gesture when they start or finish a time of prayer: in order that we may hold fast on the gifts we have received from the Lord of all. The cross is signed upon us and blessings flow, if we let them allow that fullness of divine life flow into the soul, and bear fruit and sanctify us wholly.
How about this?
Sometime (sometime soon in a quieter moment) stop and think of these things when you make the Sign of the Cross. It is the holiest of all signs. Take just a moment longer than usually, thinking what you do. Let it take in your whole being –body, soul, mind, will, thoughts, feelings.
Indeed, make it proudly ... No need to rush. Just try using it more, to centralize yourself in prayer.

Veterans
The well-being of veterans is a priority here in Saratoga County. In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.
Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans file their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Office, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifice by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.

• GUNRUNNER CHAPTER 4 • continued from page 13 •
“I got two ammo cans. Wait, I’ll get the other one,” I said while losing my breath. Back into the brambles I went, like a good hunting dog sniffing its quarry. Again, I appeared on the beach with the second pile of ‘war booty,’ I hoped.
Larry got interested when I started washing off the cans. They were pretty rusty but the rubber seal around the lid seemed to be fine. They were buried there for fifty years, I thought. “They look pretty good,” I said. “Toss me a line and I’ll tie one on,” I instructed the Captain. He did, I did and he pulled the first one to the boat. We repeated the steps and I took off my dirty stained pants and muddy shoes and socks and waded back to the boat. It was still cold!
“We better get back before you get pneumonia,” Larry said. Mother Hen, I thought. He was right, I was freezing! I checked my watch, going on five o’clock. We both had a pretty busy day. I was cold and tired. “I’m ready for your wood stove,” I said.
Larry got into open water and put the boat in high speed. The wind was chilly but the covered cabin area was still pretty protected and warm. I looked at the two boxes on the deck and wondered what was inside. I started shivering now. I think Larry noticed and tried to go faster.
The sun was going down by the time we reached camp. All I wanted was a hot shower. Not out here though. No shower, no phone, no TV, even cell phones didn’t get a signal here. We carried in our gear and treasure chests and Larry stoked up the fire. The camp was warm anyway, but Larry got it warmer. I cleaned up with the help of a big, wide, white porcelain pan and the everpresent hot water from the teakettles. I felt a lot better being clean, dry and warm. Larry handed me a Jack Daniels Manhattan. “This’ll fix you up!” He said.
Larry puttered around the kitchen and asked if I wanted a sandwich for dinner. Sounded good to me, I was tired. We left the ammo cans on the porch because they were still messy and rusty and gave off a serious odor of wet moss. They’ll keep another day, I thought.
After dinner and paper plate cleanup I was ready for bed. My watch read seven-thirty. I didn’t care. I climbed into my bunk and I think I was sleeping before my head hit the pillow.

Inflation is Causing Consumers to Identify Their Priorities
If you’ve been watching your wallet, you’re not alone. As Americans continue to navigate inflation, 76% report cutting back on spending, up from 67% in 2024, according to the second annual Wells Fargo Money Study.
The majority of Americans also say they are making tough financial choices to navigate their lives, including delaying plans with hefty price tags, such as travel, homeownership, education, marriage and retirement.
“There is a clear social narrative surrounding the question: ‘do I, and will I, have enough?’ The fact that these questions are being asked is positive because we know the earlier people focus on their money behaviors, the more time they have
to course correct to achieve their goals,” said Michael Liersch, head of Advice and Planning at Wells Fargo.
Consumers continue to navigate higher than expected prices
An overwhelming 90% of those surveyed responded they feel “sticker shock” in one or more areas of common spending, including eating out, attending a concert, buying a bottle of water, or downloading a video game, and say actual costs are between 55% and 200% higher than what they expect.
“Spending is one of the most important factors to staying on track,” said Liersch. “I would encourage people to align their spending with what matters most to them.”
Nearly all Americans (94%) acknowledge that they want to do just that: align money choices with their values, and 86% want to be more intentional and thoughtful about spending.
According to Liersch, “These insights highlight that Americans are not just winging it. They are being extraordinarily introspective as they navigate their financial priorities.”
Americans judge themselves, not others Money can be an emotional topic, at times
inciting envy, anxiety and secretiveness. While 87% of Americans say it makes no difference to them how much money another person has, 56% keep how much they have secret, and 32% of them say it’s because they are trying to avoid people judging them.
Americans also spend time thinking about how much money other people have – and wishing they could have more themselves. Forty-seven percent responded they often feel envious of how much money other people have, 37% admit to obsessing about getting rich, 34% admire social media millionaires, and 23% admit to sometimes overspending just to keep up with people around them.
“Americans appear comfortable with other people being authentic about their financial situation, which is encouraging,” Liersch says. “So now it’s time to overcome selfjudgment and reset the frame of reference from others to one’s own personal benchmark.”
Americans want help meeting goals
Eighty-six percent of respondents say they have a clear picture of what they want their money to do for them. And the vast majority are optimistic about how to do it: 87% say now is a good time to save and 65% say now is a good time to invest. Yet 61% say they need a mental reset, and are being held back by such factors as difficulty changing habits, lack of financial knowledge and other financial responsibilities.

To overcome these challenges, Americans are seeking more financial advice year over year. Last year, 24% said they were seeking more advice from others; this year it’s 36%. Looking across generations, the desire for more advice is higher among teens (54%), gen Z adults (61%) and millennials (46%).
At a time when many are feeling cashstrapped, learning new ways to think about and manage money can help you take control of your financial future.

The Fourth of July may have been two days away, but the members of the Caddyshack league brought plenty of fireworks to Saratoga Lake Golf Club in Stillwater on Wednesday.
Competing on the treacherous par-36 back nine, the Caddyshackers christened the start of the second half with half the league posting net scores of par or better, seven personal bests tied or broken, and the 18th eagle in league history.
For the second straight week, Hoosick Falls native Ty Colvin carded the outstanding “3”. After snaring his first regular season eagle on the par-5 seventh last week, Ty once again reached a par5 in two shots (this time the dogleg left 15th) and sank a clutch putt.
Ty now becomes only the fourth Caddyshacker with multiple eagles in a career, and the first player to have multiple eagles in a single season.
Saratoga Lake staffers Trevor Marsh and Jeff Vienneau picked up right where they left off with a big second half start.
After winning the Division III first half title with a near-record 63.5 points, Trevor and Jeff captured 8.5 points in their match to find themselves once again at the top of the leaderboard.
Trevor bagged two pars en route to a nice 48 net 34 while Jeff tied his back nine personal best (which he set two weeks ago) with a strong 44 net 33.
Two other Division III squads also had a
noteworthy start to their second half. Third-year Caddyshackers Dan Drake and Wayne Patrick matched Trevor and Jeff with an impressive 8.5-point performance of their own. The duo overcame an excellent 39 net 34 from one of their opponents (Chris LeFever) with stout scores of 53 net 34 and 50 net 34, respectively.
League sophomores Troy Bianco and Mike Shaffer also find themselves near the top of the Division III leaderboard after capturing seven points on Wednesday.
Like Dan and Wayne, Troy and Mike had to weather a powerful 40 net 33 from one of their challengers (Buddy Thorpe) to earn the victory. Troy tallied a steady 54 net 37 while Mike carded his second birdie of the season on his way to a 52 net 35.
Over in Division II, father-son tandem Matt and Jake Fauler each tied their back nine personal best scores with excellent rounds of 41 net 31 and 49 net 33, respectively.
to his incredible night by taking home Wednesday’s closest to the pin prize. Ty stuffed his tee shot to 11 feet on the par-3 14th hole to win the $10 award. Fellow Caddyshacker Trevor Marsh sponsored the contest.
The win was Ty’s first of the season and ninth for his career (putting him in fourth place all-time). The Player of the Week selection committee had their hands full this week. The Faulers’ matching personal best scores, Chris LeFever’s 39, or Carter Benson’s breakout 42 were all worthy choices. However for the second straight week on the strength of his eagle, the honors were ultimately bestowed on Ty Colvin.
The Faulers needed every one of those strokes to grind out a hard fought 7.5 points as their opponents also posted great scores of 39 net 33 (Ty Colvin) and 42 net 33 (Chad Wysocki).
Matt and Jake are still looking up in the standings, however, as fellow second division squad Carter Benson and Dan Cross snagged eight points to take the early lead.
Carter led the way with his first breakout round of the year. The Cambridge alum bagged four pars en route to a notable 42 net 32.
Meanwhile in Division I, a pair of father-son teams grabbed the early headlines.
Mechanicville natives Duane and Donnie Mysliwiec snatched eight points to stake an early claim on first place. Father Duane bookended his round with pars as he posted a sound 47 net 38. Meanwhile son Donnie tied his back nine personal best with a five-over 41 net 33.
Nipping at the Mysliwiec’s heels with 7.5 points of their own are Bill and Brad Cone. With a rare absence from Brad, father Bill carried the day tallying five pars on his way to an expert 41 net 36.
Ty Colvin added
With the second half now underway, there will be several storylines to watch. Can any of the first champs complete the season sweep and earn a firstround playoff bye? Will the early second half leaders be able to hold on for the next seven weeks? Which teams can snare the coveted wild card spots? Tune in next week as the march to the 2025 title continues. And as always, check out the league website at www.caddyshackleague.com for stats, matchups, and more info.
