Maiello reminded everyone who gathered they were there to “honor the memory of the fallen warriors who gave everything for their country.” Many were teenagers or in their early 20’s. “Regardless of age to their families they are forever young, healthy, and strong.”

Chaplain and Korean War veteran Paul O’Keefe gave the invocation. Assemblywoman recounted the names of those from our area who were killed in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WW 2, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. Not One Life Lost in Spite of Staggering Destruction

This article frst appeared in The Express issue of June 8, 2008. It is reprinted from Sandy’s book “ A Hometown is…”

May 31, 1998- The scene was surreal. After the violence, the noise and destruction there was the unreality of it all. Upside down cars, pink bats of insulation draped over naked tree limbs, leaves shredded into minuscule bits stuck all over the pavement. Houses with no fronts. Houses with no roofs. Houses that were no more. Twisted sheets of metal siding hanging like grotesque sculptures. Metal trailers shot full of holes by fying bricks from a once-towering smokestack, now a heap of rubble. Upside down vehicles looking for all the world like toys tossed aside by the hand of a gargantuan angry child. Huge trees sprawled on the ground. A statue of the Virgin Mary sitting in

a yard untouched in a feld of debris.

No Hollywood special effects expert could have planned this. If he had, we’d have smirked and said, “Man, you’re a little over the top!”

Then there was the stunning realization. It wasn’t a nightmare, it was real. It was so real that Governor George Pataki came to view the devastation, as did Assemblyman Pat Casale. They walked through the shingles, the shattered boards, the broken glass, the tree limbs, the upside down furniture, the demolished vehicles. The governor acknowledged what everyone was feeling . . . “It’s a miracle no one was killed!”

digging and moving should wait.

Paeonia is the offcial genus, the species varies depending on variety. Hardy zones

2–10, a very wide growing range. Full sun, organically rich, well-drained, yet moisture retentive soil are musts. A bit fussy with their growing conditions but once planted they’ll call the space home forever, so the better the soil, the better the plant. Fertilize when the stems emerge in spring.

Heights range from 18 to 36 inches with similar spread. White to pink shades, reds to maroon and even yellow bloom colors. The fowers regardless of whether they are anemone, semi double or

doubles get heavy and tend to spill downward. Consider placing a tomato cage carefully over emerging stems in early spring, the foliage will completely engulf the cage through fall. Another option is to use individual peony stem supports as needed.

Deadhead after bloom, allowing foliage to remain until a hard frost, then cut to ground level. This ensures food manufactured throughout summer gets relocated to the roots for winter storage. Gently mix bonemeal into the soil for a slow, winter feed that’ll aid in next season’s bud formation.

The ants, you ask? Garden folklore says they help open the buds, but truth be told they are simply dining on the very sweet bud nectar while raising havoc with any harmful insects bent on destroying the buds. Let them be, they are friendlies.

In closing, if you are lacking blooms, check the depth of the roots…peony root ‘eyes’, the sites where the stems emerge, must not be any deeper than 2-inches below the soil line and yes mulch depth counts. When mulching, cover lightly (1/2-inch) over crown to give your garden the look of consistency and help retain moisture.

Have a great week!

The National Weather Service was widely credited with the sparing of lives in the path of this monster. The fact that it hit on a Sunday afternoon when many people were at home and caught the warnings on TV and radio was a blessing as well. As the NWS tracked the twister, re-

peating the warnings over and over, people took shelter in their basements, praying that it was an exaggeration. It wasn’t. Winds were estimated at 208 miles per hour as it tore through Mechanicville and Riverside, lessening just slightly as it hammered Rensselaer County.

And what do small town folks do when their small towns suddenly look like a war zone? They help. Help came from neighbors across town, neighbors across the street, friends and relatives and big-hearted strangers from out of town and even out of state. Policemen, fremen, rescue squad personnel, city and town offcials, community center personnel, and eventually, because the task ahead was so monumental and so overwhelming, in came the National Guard. Many victims helped others, even though they were worse off than the ones they were helping.

Donations poured in, making a veritable mountain of clothing, bedding, toys, furniture and anything else the now homeless and displaced could use. The Community Nursery School and the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center were packed foor to ceiling with goods. Shelters were set up in several places, but many people bunked in with relatives and friends. Local organizations provided a schedule of meals. Businesses and residents gave everything from water to furniture to food to cash to help the victims sustain themselves until the cleanup could be done and damage could be repaired.

Mayor Tom Higgins of Mechanicville, sidelined by a recent surgery, was grateful for the efforts of Commissioner of Public Safety Guy “Butch” Coreno who galvanized the city forces to support and assist the victims. Town of Stillwater Supervisor Paul “Butch” Lilac, Town of Schaghticoke Supervisor Jean Carlson and Town of Pittstown Supervisor Thomas Salisbury stood strong in the face of a disaster which would require all their resources, all their organizational skills and long hours of their time to effect recovery in their communities.

Area churches and clergy offered their help, spiritual and otherwise. School offcials in Mechanicville, Stillwater and Hoosic Valley cancelled classes, offered assistance and did all they could to help their young students under- ▶

▶ stand and cope with their own losses or losses suffered by their friends. In the aftermath, the schools’ sports teams dedicated their efforts to honor their stricken classmates.

In the days and weeks that followed, a mountain of debris collected by an army of workers and a feet of loaders and trucks piled higher and higher in the old railroad yards west of Mechanicville. Stillwater’s Code Enforcement offcer Tom Rinaldi made the assessment on the following Wednesday that 40 structures in the Town of Stillwater and the City of Mechanicville would have to be demolished, and 250 more would require signifcant repair.

Old homes, new homes, vehicles, jobs, treasured mementos, trees, household possessions . . . so much was lost. But not one human life. Yes, it was a miracle.

PERSONAL MEMORIES

OF THE TORNADO OF 5/31/1998

From the June 7, 2018 issue of The Express Jeff Alonzo, former Mechanicville Fire Chief

“My parents’ house was completely leveled with my former wife, 11 month old son, Mom, Dad, Sister along with a great Aunt and Uncle who were all in the basement during this. Their house was where the tornado hit. My dad had a London Broil he was about to cook. The fact that they were in the basement anyway is what saved them. Since that day I have not eaten a London Broil. My Grandparents home next door received substantial damage but fortunately they were in Florida at the time. My Aunt and Uncle lived across the street from my parents. My Dad ran over to get them out of their house less than 10 minutes before the Tornado hit. Their home was also signifcantly damaged. I lost all of my childhood memories - pictures, toys, High School senior picture etc... Stuff I was saving there for my kids. My parents’ checkbook was found in Valley Falls.

Kevin Connors

“Ihad just made it home Sunday afternoon after coaching my son Eric in a baseball game. There had been bad weather warnings so we knew it was not a good day to travel but we had to go. When I got home I noticed the dog was going crazy and the skies looked scary . My wife Wendy our fve children, and myself ran into the basement. When the tornado came through it sounded like a locomotive heading into the living room.

When it was over I knew it was a disaster and had to go see our clients. My family did not want to be

left alone so everyone packed in the car and off they went , frst to the offce. Connors Insurance had the capability to write small checks to tide over a client until the offcial insurance adjustment. I grabbed blank checks, took 5 Polaroid cameras and all the flm I had and off they went. Hildreth’s was the frst stop. I wrote a quick $2500 check and was off to try to get up to Viall Ave. Offcer Lydey Carey was on duty and let me up the hill. The home of one of my clients, Nick Izzo, was on fre. There was so much destruction I could not even fnd Bancroft St. “

Pat Hildreth, Proprietor of Hildreth’s Restaurant

“We had at least 40 people eating in the restaurant on that late Sunday afternoon. When the tornado hit everyone hit the foor. It was crazy and we just let everybody go. We had a freezer which disappeared. Maybe it is on the bottom of the Hudson.”

Anthony Sylvester

“Iasked for two weeks off from work to help out in Mechanicville. The next morning, I went to the DPW garage and helped drive a dump truck and pick up debris. After a few days I helped the Chamber of Commerce collect food and bring it to places serving meals to victims and volunteers. Then I went on to picking up clothing and monetary donations; and delivering food and water to volunteers. A few months after the tornado I was honored at banquet as

the Chambers Man of the Year for helping after the Tornado. I appreciated it very much but felt I was only one of the many Helping Hands which Mechanicville has so many. I call them Mechanicville’s Hidden Angels- they show up when needed. “

Donna Bove

“We were living on Sirchia Rd, off of Viall Avenue. It was a Sunday at around 4:30, a very hot and humid day. We were preparing snacks when it started to get windy and I suggested we go down cellar. On the way downstairs I saw stuff in the area blowing sideways. When we were in the cellar I wondered why it was so wet.

When it was over we came up and discovered that the reason for the wet cellar was the blown out windows in the house. The houses of our neighbors next to us and across the street were rubble. Our house was still intact.

At the time I was working at Polyset. One of the two chimneys came down during the tornado. The next day there were bricks all over in the offces, and the roof came off. Thank goodness that this did not happened during a work day. At Polyset we had a picnic table. That disappeared after the tornado. Eventually it was found across the Hudson River in Schaghticoke.”

School

Fire by Sandy McBride

Sandy McBride is a native of Mechanicville. Writing has always been her passion, and she has won numerous awards for her poetry. For the past 17 years, she has written feature stories for The Express weekly newspaper. She has published four books of feature stories and two poetry collections, and a children’s historical novel on the Battles of Saratoga entitled “Finding Goliath and Fred”.

It was a very calm night. No wind was blowing and the ground was free of ice and snow and the moon was shining brightly. It was a beautiful winter’s night, with no hint of tragedy. Communicants of the First Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church were meeting for special entertainment.

At the Music Hall on Park Avenue, a dance was in progress. In the basement of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, a few yards north of School One, members of the Mechanicville Retail Grocers’ Association were just sitting down to their banquet. The calendar said February 17, 1919 and the clock in the basement said 7:45 p.m. Forty-fve minutes before, the School One clock had sounded seven.

In the new high school, adjacent to St. Luke’s church, the Mechanicville basketball team known as the Halfmoons were handing the Troy Arsenal a drubbing by the score of 24-16 when someone rushed into the gym balcony and shouted ‘School One is burning!’”

Hal Sheehan, Mechanicville’s well-known newspaper columnist who for years recorded and recounted some of the most fascinating happenings in the history of our communities, gave us a vivid picture of what happened on that February night one hundred and two years ago. He recounted this tragic event in several of his columns, Down Our Way, in the Saratogian, in 1969 and again in his column Over Mechanicville Way in the Gazette in 1984, as well as brief mentions in others. The school building was Mechanicville’s frst high school and was built in 1888. Its frst class graduated in 1892, a class consisting of six young ladies. It had twelve large classrooms on three stories, as well as a library and a board of education meeting room in the basement. Atop what Hal calls the “ugly” mansard roof was the pride of the community . . . a tower with a large clock and a 1457-pound bell that rang the hour of the day and night faith- ▶

▶ fully for 31 years”.

As the community of Mechanicville grew, a new, larger high school building was built on the other side of St. Luke’s church and rectory in 1915, and the original building became an elementary school dubbed School One.

On that February night, Sheehan tells us, the Reverend James A. Tappe, rector of St. Luke’s, looked out his window, only a few yards from the school building, at about 7:45 and saw fames shooting up from the basement. He sounded the alarm from a fre box in front of the church, and the Mechanicville Fire Department raced to the scene.

Firemen had to deal with no pressure in the hydrants, but soon got their pumpers into action. Seeing the magnanimity of the blaze, they brought in their ancient steamer and put it in action to reach the top foors. One of their big concerns was of the roaring fames spreading to the rectory of the church as well as the Mead home on the south side of the school. The school had wooden ceilings, wooden staircases and oiled birchwood foors and quickly became a roaring furnace.

At 8:57, the mansard roof collapsed into the basement. Three minutes later, at exactly nine o’clock, the bell chimed nine times and then clock and bell plummeted 60 feet from the tower into the basement. The fre would not be controlled until 11 p.m., but continued to smolder all night and the next day as 50 tons of coal stored in the basement burned. By morning light, nothing remained of the school but windowless walls and three chimneys towering above the rubble. Lost in the confagration were a thousand library books as well as the textbooks of the

school’s 550 students. The fag, which had not been taken down that night, also burned.

City residents wept as they watched the blaze consume the school of which they were so proud. The loss of the clock and the bell were particularly lamented, especially since it had rung just a few months earlier on November 11, 1918 to proclaim the end of the Great War. Many demanded that the bell be retrieved from the wreckage and used again on a new school building. Sadly, the damaged bell was eventually auctioned off, and the high bidder was the Meneely Bell Company of Troy which ironically had crafted the bell some 32 years earlier.

While the students were relocated to many locations throughout the city until a new School One could be built, in a later column, Hal noted an interesting side note to the fre. It seems that an annual occurrence was the migration of chimney swallows who few into Mechanicville every year on May 15. They always made their home in the ventilating chimney at the rear of the school. Observers had noted that there were about 200 of those swallows living at the school in the previous September when they had left town and headed south on the 15th of that month.

Said Hal, “When the fre destroyed the school building and left only skeleton chimneys standing, the swallows must have gotten the message, for they never returned.”

The budget refects a 3.00% increase in spending over the currentyear budget and a 4.87% increase in the tax levy, which is within the district’s tax levy limit.

“On behalf of the Stillwater Central School District, I sincerely thank the community for their participation in today’s vote,” said Superintendent of Schools Joseph Mariano, Jr. “Your approval of the 2025-26 budget ensures we continue providing a safe, high-quality education that supports student success while maintaining longterm fscal responsibility. We’re excited to move forward together, building on this foundation for our students and future generations.”

The approved budget maintains all educational programs for students, preserves current services and includes the purchase of four new diesel school buses. It also provides funding for faculty and staff salary increases, higher health insurance and employee beneft costs, the elementary STEAM program, BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) and a new agricultural science teacher position.

The projected tax levy—the total amount of money a school district raises through property taxes—increases by 4.87% under the approved budget. This increase is below Stillwater’s maximum allowable tax levy increase of 4.88% as determined by the state’s tax levy “cap” formula.

District offcials surmise that school tax rates, which are the amount of taxes residents pay per $1,000 of assessed property value, will increase by approximately 2.31% for district residents. Final school tax rates are set in August when municipalities fnalize their assessment rolls.

Stillwater Memories from Rich Crammond

Iwould like to share some times from my early days, 1960 to 1970

The frst memories that comes to mind is when I would walk from Dick Lynch Road to Russell Road near Quaker Springs through the Saratoga Battlefeld, via Route 32. That big bag of cookies I was carrying saved my butt for sure one day.

When walking north past the old Hannah Farm out come these 3 “Big” dogs barking and showing their teeth. When I got to my Aunts house I was short on cookies but “so glad to be alive.”

I also remember me walking past Hurb Noonan’s house sometimes at night. Hurb lived on Colonial Road, not too far from the village. He lived by himself and when I would walk past at night I would hear those creaking sounds coming from inside. Used to make my hair stand up.

Hurb always carried a big sack on his back, like Santa when walking to the store. I gave him a ride home one hot summer day in my new red, top down convertible. It was the last time to see him alive. Rest easy old friend.

Village of Schaghticoke Memorial Day Parade

by Christine Barton

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the annual Memorial Day parade was held in the Village of Schaghticoke. The parade began at the East Gate of the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds and processed down Route 40 to the Veterans Memorial. Following the parade Village of Schaghticoke Mayor Scott Rice opened the ceremony with welcome remarks. Town, county and state elected offcials joined the Schaghticoke community for this annual Memorial Day Observance to recognize and give thanks to our Veterans.

Rensselaer County Legislator, Bill Maloney led the service. The invocation and benediction was provided by Lynne Hardy, Pastor of the Presbyterian United Church and music provided by the Hoosic Valley Band. This year the parade was hosted by the Schaghticoke Fire Department. Stewarts shops provided free refreshments following the service.

Each year the communities in the Towns of Schaghticoke and Pittstown comes together for a Memorial Day parade and an observance to remember and honor the lives of the American soldiers who have died in military service. Typically, the locations of the parades alternate each year between Johnsonville, Valley Falls, Schaghticoke and Melrose with 2024 being the frst time Hemstreet Park joined in the parade rotation.

The 2025 Memorial Day parade included representation from area Fire Departments and Rescue Squads, area VFW Posts, local American Legion and auxiliaries, the Cub Scouts, several Rensselaer County organizations, the Hoosic Valley Band as well as state, county and local elected offcials. The speakers refected on the importance of Memorial Day to our nation’s history and the importance of paying tribute to those that “gave all for our freedom.” Valley Falls resident and Army Veteran Joe Madigan was honored as this year’s Grand Marshall.

The speakers noted that the great turnout to support the parade this year, despite the rainy weather conditions, refects the patriotism that the community shares. It was noted of the importance of keeping these traditions and our nation’s history, alive in our communities. The community was also reminded to enjoy our freedoms this weekend all while remembering and honoring the memory of those veterans who made these freedoms possible.

TMemorial Day Observance Held in Valley Falls

he annual Memorial Day Observance was held this year on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 10am at the Valley Falls Community Hall. Every year on the weekend of Memorial Day the community comes together for a service in honor of the soldiers who have selfessly died protecting our freedoms.

We are reminded of the true meaning for this day. Memorial Day is the federal holiday that exists to honor and mourn all the military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Lynn Keyes and Rev. Ralph Marino, members of the Valley Falls Library Board, opened the ceremony with a welcome message followed by the invocation. The Pledge

Greenhouses

of Allegiance was recited by all. Lynn read a list of names of the local community members who served in the military. “We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.” The Veterans who were present at the event were also recognized and honored for their service to our country and our community.

The Scout Troop #49 led by John Sassatelli on the bagpipes offered the presentation of colors. The troop also served as the color guard as well as offered the fag raising and lowering and the wreath placement. The singing of America the Beautiful was led by Kristine Wohlfahrt. The ceremony ended with the playing of Taps offered by Julian Habak, a Hoosic Valley music student who has been an active part of the service for four years now.

The ceremony is hosted by the Valley Falls Library. Every year this service is made possible by a combination of efforts of local organizations and community members who each offer their special talents to make this event possible. Lynn offered a special thanks for all the youth of the community that have donated their time to contribute to this ceremony.

Again, this year the annual Memorial Day Observance brings the community together to honor our local heroes who have died serving in all branches of the United States Armed Forces. On Memorial Day we “remember and honor.” 311 Pinewoods

CSchaghticoke in the American Revolution: Post-Ticonderoga, May-June 1775

ommemoration of the frst two military events of the American Revolution is over: Lexington and Concord in April, and the seizure of Forts Ticonderoga and Crown Point by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold in May. So the British Army was being held, surrounded, in the city of Boston; and the many cannons at the forts were available for the newly forming American army to use- but located far from any centers of population. The Albany Committee of Correspondence was still the “sort-of” government of the Colony of New York, with representation from all the parts of Albany County, including Schaghticoke. The Provincial Congress was still meeting in New York City, with representatives from all parts of the colony, including Albany. And the Continental Congress was meeting in Philadelphia, with

representatives from all of the colonies.

When the Albany Committee of Correspondence met on May 22, 1775, it had two major concerns. The frst was to prevent people from selling arms or ammunition to anyone opposed to the “liberties of America,” in other words, to anyone supporting Great Britainquite a big ask. Second, they were concerned that the Mohawk Indians would get involved in the “dispute between Old England Boston.” The Albany folks were concerned partly because the colony of New York had always supplied the Mohawks with gun powder, and the Committee didn’t have the capability to do that. Abram, a chief of the Mohawks, stated that “the white people may settle their own Quarrels between themselves.” We know that the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) would generally support the British in the war, but for now there was relief that there wouldn’t be an Indian attack any time soon.

to transport the cannons. The Congress did purchased 100 barrels of pork to send to Fort Ti. Albany sent two barrels. It also sent Henry I. Bogert to inventory the cannons and to estimate what would be needed to transport them to the south end of Lake George. Bogert had begun to construct scows there at Fort George by the end of May.

The Albany Committee seized the contents of the powder magazine in the City of Albany, “much wanted through the different parts of the County.” There were 450 guns, “in very bad repair,” and most of the powder was spoiled. Gunsmiths began to repair the guns and the powder could be “wrought over anew” at a gunpowder mill.

Committee members also intercepted and opened mail from British soldiers and others in Canada, intended for the old British government in Albany. British offcers based there said they expected to be attacking the “rebellious New Englanders” in Boston soon. And citizens in Canada loyal to Great Britain talked of raising a regiment to retake Ticonderoga. These were very frightening developments, and they pushed the Albany Committee to begin to raise its own regiments of soldiers…more about that in a future column.

Bring it in or email: info.expresspaper@gmail.com

Now that Fort Ticonderoga was in American hands, those soldiers needed to be supported with food and ammunition. The NY Provincial Congress suggested that Albany send provisions north, along with carpenters to build boats

Malta Resident Thomas Vandish, Sr. is Honored

by Harold Wessell

This month’s honoree in the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors series of ceremonies honoring the County’s Deceased Veterans. is a US Army Veteran from WWII, Thomas W. Vandish Sr. of the Town of Malta. Mr. Vandish served in the US Army from 1942-1945. Born on April 2, 1928 in Syracuse to Warren and Martha, he moved to the Town of Malta in 1954. He entered the US Army on September 10, 1942, and was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines, where he was a Morse Code Operator. He was discharged on December 19, 1945 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Explained County Veterans Service director Frank McClement. “Unfortunately, like many of his generation, Thomas’s records were lost to time in a fre in 1973 at the NPRC in St Louis. We have limited information about the details of his service. But we can speculate based on what we do know. While others charged across beaches and skies, he fought his battle in silence – his weapon, a telegraph key; his battlefeld, a radio shack hidden deep in the tropical heat of New Guinea and the Philippines. As a Morse code operator for the U.S. Army, Thomas played a role that was as vital as it was dangerous. In the dense jungles of the Pacifc Theater, surrounded by enemy forces and treacherous terrain, communication was everything. A single message – accurate, swift, secure – could mean the difference between victory and disaster. And he delivered, day after day. He spent long hours listening for signals through the static, translating the rhythmic clicks into life-saving intelligence. He helped coordinate troop movements, report

enemy positions, and call in air support. He worked tirelessly, often under the threat of enemy fre, with little sleep and less recognition. But he never faltered.

“When the Philippines campaign began, he was there – supporting the liberation of islands under brutal occupation. Each message he sent helped move the Allies closer to victory, and freedom closer to the people who had suffered so long. But like so many of his generation, Thomas probably never asked for praise. He returned home quietly, built a life, raised a family, and lived with the same quiet strength he had shown in war.

“Today, we remember not just the battles he helped win, but the values he lived by: duty, humility, and service. We are here not simply to recount history, but to feel its weight, and to recognize the individual lives that shaped it. Today, we honor the Robert Shaw as a member of the greatest generation for his service and for a life lived as a strong member of his community.” Thomas was married to Laura and together they had two daughters and two sons.

He worked as a Salesman/Manager of Steel and Aluminum Distributor, Brace Mueller Huntly Inc. from 1946-1979; then for Van Patten Golf Course from 1980-1993.

In the community, he served as a Cub Master for the Malta Cub Scout Pack, and as a volunteer freman for the Malta Ridge Fire Company. He was a member and Past Commander of the VFW Post 358. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fshing, golf and bowling. He passed away on July 1, 2004.

Veterans

The well-being of veterans is a priority here in Saratoga County. In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifce of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.

Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans fle their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Offce, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifce by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.

bors. He was struck and abandoned by an apparently drunk driver and terribly injured – including some brain damage that continued to impair him. (Fortunately, he’s still doing “well-enough.”)

My wife Lisa, then soon to be a Registered Nurse, aware that the family were good Christian folks, recalled a little American Bible Society packet that I had shown her, which contained several Psalms -- to pray in different situations. Before visiting the parents, she suggested it seemed a good token of concern to give them.

And indeed, it was.

The Psalms are invaluable to persons of faith, and from ancient times are at the heart of Christian and Jewish communities’ liturgical prayer. (I like to speak of their use in public worship as the churches’ and the synagogues’, to quote an old song, “rhythm of life.”)

Why have these faith communities always considered the Psalms their most perfect book of prayer? Why do the Psalms go to make up the greater part of the “Divine Offce” (now known as the Liturgy of the Hours), the public prayer throughout the day for the Catholic Church, and other bodies as well, such as Anglican/Episcopal and Lutheran.

Why should the “modern” person of faith still be turning to such ancient prayers, even daily?

In their very words, we drink of divine praise at its pure and stainless source, in all its primitive sincerity and perfection. Any day (or moment), we can return to the youthful strength and direction with which the ancient psalmists voiced their adoration and devotion to their Lord. They are still a vital part of Jewish and Christian faith and liturgical prayer -- still the very expression of their deepest inner life.

If we truly come to know and love the Psalms, we enter more and more deeply into the faith community’s own experience of divine things… And ▶

That is why the Church believes the Psalms are still our frst and best way of praising God: because they go back to our beginnings. But to truly understand them, we must experience the meanings they express, in our own hearts... in the now of our lives.

(Don’t have a Bible? You should be able to fnd a copy, or even one on with just the Psalms, at a wide range of prices suiting your need, in several respected translations. The Barnes & Noble chain should be able to take you to take care of you -- or an online store, or any good bookstore).

—By the way, you will see some New Testaments, especially pocket-sized editions, with the Book of Psalms in the back, so that the reader can readily pray and refect through both!

In an article some years ago entitled “The Psalms as the ultimate self-help tool” offering a spiritual reservoir in diffcult times, Rabbi Simcoe H. Weintraub in his “My Jewish Learning” website said: “Illness, suffering, and loss mute us. They leave us without words. Overwhelmed, confused, distraught, despairing, – and/or profoundly grateful, refective, renewed, attuned: in other words what we want, need, or intend… In the face of these challenges, those who are

He pointed in particular to the Book of Psalms. “Psalms offer solace, guidance and more. For centuries, Jews have turned to it for solace, guidance, catharsis, renewal, and much more. The 150 Psalms refect a wide range of experience and expression: anger and acceptance, complaint and to comfort, despair and delight, fatigue and faith.” (And the same goes for Christians.)

Psalms may be heard at many moments in life: at the bedside of those who are ill, at the blessing of meals, at funerals, when visiting a grave, and in many other settings. They are there to help express our great joy or feelings of despair; our gratitude, or distress; life’s ups and of course its downs. They voice the full spectrum of the joys and concerns of the faithful of their time, and still our time. They refect a markedly direct sense -- that we would do well to cultivate for ourselves: that God is not like an “absentee landlord,” but is near us, nearer than we can imagine…

Always.

CADDYSHACK

LEAGUE

Mysliwiec Cards

First Eagle of Season

First-year Caddyshacker Duane Mysliwiec bagged the 16th eagle in league history on Wednesday.

Playing the dogleg left par-5 15th at Saratoga Lake Golf Club in Stillwater, Duane powered a drive through the corner and reached the green with a towering 6-iron that nestled to within four feet of the cup. He then tapped in for the incredible “3”.

Duane now joins one of the most exclusive lists in Caddyshack history. In the 11+ year narrative of the league, only 11 other players can boast having recorded an eagle.

Also having a big night on Wednesday was skilled tandem Bruce Bailey and Bob Lang.

After jumping from ffth to second place in the Division I standings last week, Bruce and Bob continued that momentum with another huge eightpoint night.

Bob tied his back nine career best round with a fve-over 41 net 32 while Bruce chipped in with a steady 45 net 37.

UNDER-par on his way to a three-over 39 net 35. Division III also saw a new duo take over the top spot. League veterans Ron Colvin and Glen Stone grinded out a hard-fought 6-5 match victory over Matt and Jake Fauler to slide into frst place.

Ron bagged two pars on his way to a sound 48 net 37 while Glen shot a strong 51 net 34.

The long-time friends overcame a tremendous round from Jake. The younger Fauler bagged his frst birdie of the year as he shot a new personal best 47 net 31.

Also in Division III, 2023 league champs Doug Crossman and Fritz Ludwig nearly doubled their season point total with an astounding 9.5-point night.

With those eight points, the retired educators leapfrogged into frst place on the Division I leaderboard.

Also having a big night in Division I were perennial contenders Ty Colvin/Chad Wysocki and Bill Cone/Brad Cone.

Ty and Chad combined for eight pars as they captured 7.5 points in their match. Chad led the way with a nice 41 net 33.

Meanwhile the Cone boys had their largest point haul of the year as they garnered eight points in their match. Bill shot a solid 43 net 36 while Brad played his fnal two holes in one-

Both men bagged pars on the demanding par-4 12th en route to serviceable scores of 49 net 38 and 52 net 35, respectively.

Over in Division II, Bruce J. and Bruce M. Sausville kept their tenuous hold on the top spot thanks to a notable eight-point performance. With Bruce J. still on the DL, Bruce M. snared two pars and a birdie en route to a useful 41 net 35.

Bruce’s birdie was the 50th of his Caddyshack career (making him only the sixth player to reach that milestone).

Reigning league champs Tim Monast and Kevin Reilly also had a huge night in Division II as they captured 8.5 points to move within a mere half-point of the Sausvilles.

Kevin led the way playing his fnal four holes in one-over-par en route to an excellent 44 net 32 while Tim contributed a nice 49 net 36.

A trio of players rounded out the night’s top performances.

Josh Wysocki tallied a season-high seven pars en route to an impressive four-over 40 net 35. Fellow Hoosick Falls native Ty Colvin bagged his 650th career par (becoming only the second Caddyshacker to accomplish that feat). And Buddy Thorpe posted four pars on his way to a 43 net 34.

Bruce Bailey took home his second straight

individual contest on Wednesday. The league veteran sank a six-foot 9.5-inch putt on the par-4 10th to win the $10 prize. Fellow Caddyshacker Bruce M. Sausville sponsored the competition.

The victory marks Bruce’s eighth career individual contest win skyrocketing him into a tie for fourth place all-time.

The Player of the Week selection committee had their hands full on Wednesday with multiple personal best rounds, heavy par hauls, and big match victories.

However when someone achieves something that only 11 other Caddyshackers have ever done, the honors must go to them. On the strength of his tremendous eagle, Duane Mysliwiec earned the nod.

With four weeks in the books, the end of the frst half is on the horizon and all three divisions are wide open.

The top four teams in Division I are separated by only two points. Meanwhile in Division II, the difference between frst and ffth place is a mere 4.5 points. In Division III, Ron Colvin/Glen Stone and Trevor Marsh/Jeff Vienneau have a little breathing room from the rest of the pack but with 11 points up for grabs each night things can change very quickly.

Tune in next week as the Caddyshackers offcially hit the halfway point of the frst half. And as always, check out the league website at www. caddyshackleague.com for stats, matchups, and more info.

KRICKET & BUGSY: Mix, one female, one male, 10 years, 7 lbs, 8.5 lbs. Kricket and Bugsy are a lifelong duo with an unbreakable bond. Where one goes, the other is never far behind—if they’re in separate rooms, expect a few barks as they call out to each other. This sweet pair brings out the best in each other, with Kricket especially gaining confdence from Bugsy’s calm and steady presence. One adoption fee has been sponsored, so you can take home two lovebugs for the price of one! Kricket is curious and affectionate, often following Bugsy’s lead to come ask for pets. She loves being around other dogs, especially when she’s outside soaking up the sun. She’ll even join in on some playful barking if the group starts up! Bugsy, on the other hand, is a gentle, laid-back boy who loves curling up on a dog bed or melting into your arms for a cuddle session. Both Kricket and Bugsy are great with kids and other pets, including cats. Bugsy takes medication for his heart. Kricket is especially sensitive to handling around her neck, so a leash-free, enclosed space would be ideal for her. Despite their age, Kricket and Bugsy still have a spark of puppy energy left in them. They’ll break out into happy little dances when they’re excited, though they’re still learning to feel fully confdent. With a patient, loving home and each other by their side, they’re sure to blossom. Kricket and Bugsy are crate-trained, enjoy lounging in the yard on nice days, and are ready to fnd a forever home together.

◀ This beautiful CALICO will be ready for adoption shortly. She is almost done with her mama duties and is looking forward to fnding a forever home of her own where she can be loved and cherished. She is FeLV/FIV negative, vaccinated and will be spayed the frst week in June. She is super sweet and affectionate and a quite self assured kitty. She is approximately 2.5 years old and a real beauty.
