RESPONSE TO JOHN COREY –HOMETOWN HEROES BANNERS

First, let me say I agree that our military and frst responders deserve all the recognition you mentioned, as well as all the other groups you noted. Having said that, you should know the banners in the Town of Schaghticoke have military, frst responders, and women. Schaghticoke was among the frst to include these groups. Families have to fll out an application and pay for the banners – they are not just arbitrarily chosen. I urge you to take a ride on Route 40 from Speigletown to Schaghticoke and look again. You will see women, policemen, fremen, and military. Be sure to look at both sides of the banners as some have two distinctions – my dad included.

City Council: Water Rates to Increase, Water Grant Approved

Mechanicville July 21

he Council voted to apply for a $1.5 million Community Development Glock Grant. A CDBG requires no matching funds. Primarily this will be used to loop the water mains which are closed in a dead end. The dead ends cause stagnant water. About 20 of these are awarded every year. Mechanicville has a good chance to win the award due to the fact 51% of residents have low to moderate income. Results will be announced in November.

The public hearing on amending the Light Industrial Districts was not held. City Attorney Lyn Murphy explained the County is changing some of its procedures. By September guidleines should be in place.

An unexpected addition to the hearing concerned the fremen’s LOSAP

fund. This change has to be approved by the council by July 31 in order to be on the fall ballot. Finance Commissioner Tamar Martin explained after 19 years the fund is only at 63% . The Mechanicville fremen want to install a new program to be based on a $5 per response to fre calls. The council approved this and elimination of LOSAP will apper on the November ballot. Tamar Martin explained another addition to the hearing concerning water rates. She said over the last 3 years $750,000 from the general fund has had to be transferred to the water fund. The counci8l voted on a 20% increase. Previously the City had commercial customers. Water availability from Saratoga County has eliminated most of the need for Mechanicville water.

RPowdery Mildew

an into some old friends a few weeks back and they were asking about the infamous Powdery Mildew that challenges many veggie and fower plants…today this chat is dedicated to Matt and Kim. Thanks guys, for the question!

For starters what is Powdery Mildew? It’s a fungal disease, easily recognized, as it looks like someone shook baby powder on the leaves (tops and undersides), stems and when severe enough, fruit and fowers of our plant. A closer look through a hand lens reveals its intricate, crisscrossing highways of fungal threads called ‘mycelium’.

Wine of

the Week

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand

This crisp and refreshing white wine is known for its vibrancy and fruit-forward profle. A classic example of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the bright acidity and citrus notes make it a versatile choice for hot weather, days at the beach or picnics.

These threads attach themselves to the leaf by needle-like appendages called ‘haustoria’ that penetrate the cells of the leaves absorbing its nutrients. As it feeds, the topside of the mycelium develops dark spherical shaped bumps, these are the reproductive organs of the fungus called ‘conidia’ or spores.

The spores, once ripe, are released from the host into the breeze landing on and infecting neighboring plants. Mycelium grows and the life cycle begins again. The preferred environmental conditions include shade, humid nights (spore development) and cool days (spore dispersal).

Good news, not all plants are susceptible to Powdery Mildew and the different species of powdery mildew are plant specifc. Bad news, over 500 plus species of powdery mildew have

▶ been identifed. Hey, just giving you the facts!

But fear not, our plants do not have to succumb…there are cultural practices we as gardeners can do to reduce and often eliminate this opportunistic disease.

Proper spacing between plants, buildings and other hardscapes ensures optimum air circulation and reduces humidity.

Water early in the day so foliage ‘goes to bed dry’, reducing evening humidity.

Avoid overhead watering whenever possible

Plant mildew resistant varieties especially in shade gardens.

Dispose of infected plants, stems and leaves in garbage. Do not toss in compost pile or rototill infected plants into garden come fall.

Sanitize tools after pruning or digging infected plants

Consider Neem Oil, Copper or sulfur-based fungicides and Serenade as great non-chemical options. You may have read about mixing baking soda and dish soap, although I have not tried this, many tout its success and the recipe is on the web.

Always follow label directions and take a moment to research your choice. While some fungicides work best as controls, others excel as preventative measures, knowledge is power.

Apply on a calm day to avoid drift, apply after sunset to ensure pollinators have left. Avoid spraying on leaves in direct sun to avoid possible burning. Some applications must be applied to top and bottom of foliage, read. Rotate fungicide choices to prevent resistance.

Keep your eyes peeled, as fall approaches conditions improve for powdery mildew, right when we are harvesting our hearts out.

The Graveyarders Annual Summer Car Show Draws a Crowd to Schaghticoke

On Saturday, July 30, 2022 the annual Graveyarders car show once again drew a crowd to Janet Whitney’s home in Schaghticoke. The Graveyarders is a local classic car, truck and bike club. The group

regularly hosts and attends events. Twice a year they hold car shows in Schaghticoke that not only draw in new attendees but welcome back those who have been coming for years. Car, truck and bike enthusiasts from all over spent the sunny

Saturday afternoon enjoying music, food, raffes and classic cars, trucks and bikes of all makes and models at the annual summer Graveryarders car show.

Janet Whitney, who is also often referred to as the “Graveyard Lady,” is well known in the community and beyond for being the longtime organizer of the Graveyarders gatherings. The annual July Graveyarders summer car show and the fall Halloween themed, Kreepfest are two of the most anticipated gatherings of the year. The events are open to anyone of any age, who enjoys classic vehicles good company and a great time. Everyone enjoys it and everyone is treated equal here, says Whitney.

Whitney and the Graveyarders group attend many local car shows throughout the year but the two annual events hosted at her property in the summer and the fall have become one of the most popular events of the year, drawing car enthusiasts from near and far.

Those who attended the summer Graveyarders event were glad to share the story behind their vehicles. Rocky MiGliori attended the show from Saratoga with his 1932 Pontiac Coup. He was glad to attend and appreciated the shady locations on the property to enjoy the day’s events. Sayles and Lorri Casey came from Troy in their 1972 Ford Mustang. They enjoy attending the local car shows. This was their frst time at this event and they look forward to coming to the fall show. Eric Bruneau came from Bennington Vermont to attend this year’s ▶

Two Long-time Friends and Revolutionary War Veterans in Schaghticoke:

John Van Antwerp and Peter Ackart

by Chris Kelly, town of Schaghticoke historian

Ihave been writing about the men listed in the 1840 Census for Schaghticoke who were veterans of the Revolutionary War- just a few, very elderly men. When I frst researched the fnal two: John Van Antwerp and Peter Ackart, I failed to realized that they were not only veterans of our local militia regiment in the war, the 14th Albany County Militia, but that they had lived near each other and were probably friends for most of their long lives. John and Peter both came to Schaghticoke as young men. Peter was born in Ulster County about 1754 and moved here with his brother Solomon about 1770. John Van Antwerp was born in Albany about 1760 and moved to Schaghticoke around age four. They both attended the Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church and lived and farmed north of modern Stillwater Bridge Road.

Their Revolutionary War pension applications, fled in 1832, had virtually identical descriptions of their service in the war: enlistment in March, 1776 in the company of Captain Walter Groesbeck, travel to garrison and repair the forts at Forts Edward, Ann, and George over all the years of the war, helping out somehow at the time of the second battle of Saratoga, about October 1-17.

• GRAVEYARDERS continues •

▶ car show. He is also a returning participant. He showcased his 2009 Dodge Challenger. Whitney was happy with the attendance at this summer event. It was estimated that over 100 vehicles attended the event throughout the day. All registered vehicles left with a plaque. With the summer in full swing many of the attendees at today’s event are planning to attend several other upcoming car shows in the area during the remaining summer months. In addition to the locals, car enthusiasts from across New York and neighboring states look forward to this annual Graveyarders event.

The battle was on October 7, the surrender on the 17th. They said they “volunteered their service to General Gates, who was then encamped at Stillwater…and (were) in several engagements

until after the surrender of General Burgoyne.”

In 1778, Peter Yates became the Colonel of the 14th, and his son Jacob took over Groesbeck’s company. Peter and John both continued to serve making it as far as Fort Ticonderoga, though Peter says he was there a whole summer and John for a shorter time. Both became non-commissioned offcers in the company, Peter a Sergeant and John an Ensign- sort of like a Corporal today. I fnd it so interesting that both Peter and John have somewhat vague but almost identical descriptions of their service. I think it is because John became an advisor to a number of local men when they applied for pensions. Part of the process was to get testimony from fellow soldiers who could confrm that the men had served, since almost none of them had paperwork. John fulflled that role.

Perhaps John Van Antwerp was called on as he was a sharp guy- but perhaps because he married the daughter of Colonel Peter Yates, Catlyna, in 1778. Had their families known each other in Albany? Whatever the case, John was certainly a well-known local citizen. He and Catlyna had a number of children, the last, named Peter Yates Van Antwerp, was baptized in 1794. The Colonel was a wealthy man with a number of children. When he died in 1808, he left Catlyna several pieces of silver tableware, a mare, a cow, a bushel of salt, 200 acres of land in Montgomery County, a slave named Bob, and 100 pounds in cash. She died in 1810, and I think the Montgomery County land reverted to her children.

despite the fact that he actually had the paper naming him an Ensign and was the son-in-law of the Colonel! Two former local US CongressmenHerman Knickerbocker and Job Pierson- plus the Dutch Reformed minister testifed on his behalf. Wynant Vandenbergh, who operated the ferry across the Hudson River at Stillwater during the

war, said he saw John take the ferry while on duty many times. His pension was fnally reinstated. John died in 1848. I feel he and Catlyna are probably buried in the Yates family cemetery, off River Road, but there are not stones for them there.

Peter Ackart married a local woman, Jemima Benway, about 1782. Their son Peter was born in 1784. He was mentioned in the 1880 “History of Rensselaer County” as a Revolutionary War veteran known to many. He died in 1845 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery- he must have been buried frst elsewhere, as the cemetery opened in 1863. His grave has a DAR marker.

So Revolutionary War vets had long tendrils into their communities for over ffty years after the war. This would keep the memories alive. This is much the same as our interest in the veterans of World War II, as we lose the last of them.

Ironically, John, who testifed for so many successful pensioners, had trouble with his own pension. It was withdrawn for a couple of years,

8 Key Steps to Buying a Home

Buying a home might be the most signifcant fnancial decision you ever make. By understanding these eight key steps in the process, you can move forward with confdence, clarity and long-term success:

1. Understand what you can afford. Understanding your fnances may not be as fun as house hunting, but it’s necessary for determining how much you can afford. Most lenders suggest spending no more than 30% of your monthly income (before taxes are taken out) on mortgage payments, including principal, interest, taxes and insurance. Your credit, current interest rates and closing costs also impact what you can afford,

Pamela L. Moore, Esq.

Estates, Guardianships, Real Estate, Tra c Matters, Family/Matrimonial, and Contracts

so take these factors into consideration. Freddie Mac’s Homebuying Budget Calculator is a useful resource during this step in the process.

2. Explore down payment options. Today’s down payment options are expanding homeownership accessibility. For example, certain mortgage products allow you to put down as little as 3%. However, if you make a down payment of less than 20%, you may have to pay for private mortgage insurance until you reach 20% equity in your home. Knowing the possibilities for funding your down payment, beyond personal savings, is also helpful. These may include governmental assistance or gifts and loans from relatives. Use Freddie Mac’s Down Payment and PMI Calculators to see what’s possible.

3. Find your team. Having the right people by your side makes homebuying more enjoyable and less stressful. This team may include a housing counselor, real estate agent and lender. Who you select matters, so look for experienced, trusted professionals.

4. Find the right home. To fnd the right home, assess the property based on factors like its proximity to certain school districts, public transportation and your job. Then consider what type of home you want to live in. From singlefamily homes to condominiums, each has its advantages and disadvantages, and the right one for you will depend on your fnances, lifestyle and stage of life. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the possibilities, so consider creating a wish list to narrow down your choices. Include your musthaves and deal breakers, and refect on how your needs may evolve.

5. Apply for a loan. Finding the right loan may make a big difference in your monthly payments and overall loan cost. Shop around and check out Freddie Mac’s Loan Comparison Calculator ▶

▶to determine which loan is best for your housing goals. Then, work with your lender to apply for and complete the application process. The process takes roughly 45 days and will include providing proof of employment, banking statements and other documentation.

6. Make your offer. Through this phase, you’ll work closely with your real estate agent who will help determine a fair offer price while making sure you stay within range of what you can afford. They’ll also handle all contract negotiations with the seller’s agent.

7. Get an inspection and appraisal. Once your offer is fnal, your lender will order an appraisal. This is a necessary step in securing fnancing, and protects you and the bank by ensuring the home’s value matches the agreed upon sale price. Companies like Freddie Mac may offer appraisal waivers in certain instances, so be sure to ask your lender if one is possible. For peace of mind, you may also wish to pay for a home inspection. If the inspector fnds issues, you can work with the seller to determine if they need to pay for repairs. Or, if you have a home inspection contingency, you could renegotiate the sales price, require the seller make repairs or back out.

8. Close on your home. Closing, also called settlement, is a meeting where you sign fnal documents, pay closing costs, and ownership is offcially transferred to you. To prepare, secure your closing funds. Freddie Mac’s Closing Costs Calculator can help you estimate how much you’ll pay at settlement. You should also do a formal walkthrough of the property to check that it’s in the agreed upon condition and read all the closing documents — don’t be afraid to ask your attorney or closing agent questions.

With educational resources like My Home by Freddie Mac, you can make informed, empowered decisions every step of the way. In fact, 7 out of 10 My Home users feel better prepared to buy a home. Visit https://myhome.freddiemac.com/ buying to access these tools and resources.

Preparation is key to successful homeownership. Know the phases of the homebuying process, so you can begin your housing search educated and informed. (StatePoint)

The Mouse Who Would Fly by

There once was a mouse who so wanted to fy He sat in the grass and gazed up at the sky.

A blackbird came by then and ofered him wings.

“Before you can fy, Mouse, you must do three things. You’ll give up your tail and your excellent sight And promise me that you’ll fy only at night.”

The mouse gave it thought, and said, “Please, Mr. Bird, You give me the wings and I’ll give you my word.”

And so it was done, yes the promises three,

The mouse with no tail who could now barely see Flew into the twilight, so happy at that, And was known ever afer as “Litle Brown Bat”.

ontinuing our look in recent weeks at how our various senses fgure in our spiritual life, there is yet another path of recognition that leads us into the presence of God.

Had not Christ’s own words made it known to us so plainly, and liturgical worship repeats them with so assured confdence, we can -- we should – be bold enough to speak of it.

turning toward him with our minds and wills, while true union, is yet not a union of being-withbeing. It is not only our minds and our wills that strive to possess God. As the Psalm says, “My heart and my fesh are athirst for the living God” (Ps 84:2-4).

Only then shall we be at rest: when our whole being is joined to him, not by any mingling or confusion of natures; rather, where creature and Creator are forever distinct, and to suppose otherwise would be as nonsensical as it is presumptuous. Nevertheless, besides the union of simple love and knowledge, there is another human union: that of Life and Being together.

We desire -- are compelled to desire -- such a union; and the Scripture and our liturgical worship give profound expression to that longing. As the body desires food and drink, just so closely does our individual life desire to be united with God. Down deep, we hunger and thirst after the Lord.

It is not enough for us to know him and to love him. We would clasp him, draw him to ourselves, hold him fast, and bold as it sounds, we would take him into ourselves as we do our necessary food and drink, and

thereby still then satisfy our hunger to the full.

Jesus has told us: “As the Father has sent me, and I live by the Father, so too he that seeks me, the same shall also live by me” (John 20:21). In deepest reverence, and yet without fear, let us acknowledge the longing which God himself has planted in us, and rejoice in this gift of his exceeding goodness.

“My fesh,” Christ says to us, “is food indeed (John 6:55-60), and my blood is drink indeed.… He that eats my fesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him… As the Father has given me to have life in myself, so he that eats me, the same also shall live by me.” (John 6;57-69). To eat his life, to drink his blood -- to eat him, to absorb into ourselves the living God – is beyond any wish we might be capable of forming for ourselves.,, Yet it satisfes to the full what we long for... of necessity long for... from the bottom of our souls.

Bread is food: wholesome, nourishing food for which we never lose our appetite. Under the form of bread God becomes for us even the food of life. St. Ignatius of Antioch of ten

said to the faithful at Ephesus: “We break a bread that is the food of immortality.” By this food our being is so nourished with God himself that we exist in him and he in us.

Wine is drink. To be exact, it is more than drink, more than a liquid like water that merely quenches the thirst. “Wine that makes glad the heart of man” (Ps 104:15). The purpose of wine is not only to quench thirst, but also to give enjoyment and satisfaction and exhilaration. “My cup, how goodly it is, how plenteous!” (Ps 23)... Literally: how intoxicating, though not in the sense of drinking to excess. Wine possesses a sparkle, perfume, and vigor, that expands and clears the imagination. Under the form of wine Christ gives us his divine blood.

It is no plain and sober draft. It was bought at a great price, a divinely excessive price. “Sanguis Christi inebria me” (Blood of Christ, inebriate me) prayed St. Ignatius.

For our sakes Christ became bread and wine, food and drink. We make bold to eat and to drink him – to take him into ourselves. This bread gives us a solid and substantial strength. This wine bestows courage, joy out of all earthly measure, sweetness, beauty, limitless enlargement and perception. It brings life in intoxicating excess, both to possess and to impart.

The well-being of veterans is a priority here in Saratoga County. In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifce of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.

Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans fle their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Offce, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifce by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.

CADDYSHACK LEAGUE

Competition Heats Up

Wednesday marked the beginning of intradivisional play for the Caddyshack league at Saratoga Lake Golf Club in Stillwater. The time of the season always lends itself to big standings shake-ups, and this week was no exception.

In Division I, father-son tandem Bill and Brad Cone sent shockwaves through the standings as they captured a near-perfect 10 of 11 points skyrocketing from fourth to frst place and fipping the leaderboard on its head.

Bill began his round with back-to-back birdies (on the treacherous par-4 ninth and frst holes) on his way to a career best-tying one-over 37 net 33 on the par-36 front nine. Brad followed suit carding fve pars and a birdie en route to a skilled two-over 38 net 33.

The Cone boys’ combined “gross” (i.e., actual) score of 75 was only one stroke away from the league record for best team score.

Two other father-son pairs also made big moves in Division I on Wednesday.

Duane and Donnie Mysliwiec swept fve of their fnal six holes on their way to a huge 8.5-2.5 match victory. Those points jumped the Mechanicville natives from ffth to second in the Division I standings.

Duane kickstarted his round with a birdie as he posted a strong 41 net 35 while Donnie bagged fve straight pars on his way to an excellent 41 net 34.

Mark and Chris LeFever also got in on the action with a nice seven-point performance. The league rookies jumped from sixth to third in the standings

thanks to timely rounds of 45 net 36 and 39 net 34, respectively.

Over in Division II, the gap in the standings is now razor thin after Chris Adams and Buddy Thorpe won an outstanding 9.5 points against the division’s leaders leapfrogging them from ffth to third in the standings (and a mere one-point out of the top spot).

Buddy went on a par bonanza (tallying pars on six of seven holes at one point) as he posted a strong 41 net 33. His six pars marked a new personal best. Chris, meanwhile, started his round with back-to-back pars as he shot a solid 48 net 33.

While the leaders in Divisions I and II both fell back to the pack, the Division III freight train of Trevor Marsh and Jeff Vienneau continues to show no signs of slowing down.

The duo won their ninth consecutive match on Wednesday with an expert 7.5-3.5 showing. Not only do they continue to enjoy the top spot in the Division III standings (setting them up for a season sweep and frst round playoff bye thanks to also winning the frst half), but with 93.5 total points they are only 18 away from the all-time season points record.

Jeff began his night with a birdie (his frst of the season) as he posted an outstanding 43 net 32 while Trevor played his fnal two holes in oneUNDER-par en route to a 45 net 35.

The Saratoga Lake staffers do have one eye

looking over their shoulders, however, as secondyear Caddyshackers Troy Bianco and Mike Shaffer continue to keep pace. After capturing seven points on Wednesday, Troy and Mike sit a mere 2.5 points behind Trevor and Jeff in the Division III standings.

Troy carded his frst birdie of the season on his way to serviceable 54 net 39 while Mike tied his front nine career best with a sound 45 net 33.

A trio of players rounded out the night’s top performances.

Young bomber Carter Benson parred his fnal fve holes en route to an impressive 41 net 32. Kevin Reilly (playing without his partner) singlehandedly won 8.5 points thanks to a sound 44 net 32. And Hal VanEarden reached the “200 career pars” milestone as he posted a nice 43 net 33. League veteran Glen Stone captured Wednesday’s closet to the pin award. Glen stuffed his tee shot on the tricky par3 ffth to an incredible two feet 11 inches (the “closest” closest to the pin this season) to take home the $10 prize. Fellow Caddyshacker Fritz Ludwig sponsored the competition.

Division III

The Player of the Week selection committee was once again tasked with a diffcult decision on Wednesday. Carter Benson and Buddy Thorpe’s six par performances, Kevin Reilly’s solo match victory, and Mike Shaffer’s personal best-tying score were all worthy contenders.

Ultimately the honors went to league patriarch Bill Cone. Not only did Bill tie his personal bests for score (37) and birdies in a round (two), but his birdies came on arguably the two toughest holes on the front nine (the frst and ninth) and his round led his team to the top of the Division I standings.

The competition promises to stay ferce the rest of the way. Divisions I and II are complete free-for-alls with all six teams separated by only 5.5 and 4.5 points, respectively. Meanwhile Trevor and Jeff continue their assault on history in Division III, but Troy and Mike are nipping at their heels.

Tune in next week and as always check out the league website at www. caddyshackleague.com for stats, matchups, and more info.
