Hydrangeas
by
Nancy O’Donnell
am not sure if any other shrub stirs more questions as to pruning than this beauty. Today let’s see if we can’t debunk the confusion in the world of Hydrangeas.
First things frst, you must identify which type of hydrangea you’re growing. There are 5 hardy species here. Once you do that, understanding what type of wood they fower on tells you their pruning time.
Some fower on ‘old wood’, meaning 2026’s fower buds will develop by fall and overwinter. These hydrangeas are pruned immediately after this year’s bloom, allowing this summer’s growth to become home to next year’s buds. If pruned

anytime between late summer and spring, you remove the bud. A telltale trait of these hydrangea varieties; come fall a large, reddish brown pointed bud will be present on the end of their branch. Unfortunately, since buds are overwintered, these species are subject to winterkill of fower buds. If come spring, that terminal brown bud doesn’t open, you can assume winterkill occurred.
Other species fower on ‘new wood’ or spring growth. These hydrangeas are pruned late-winter to early spring before they leaf out. Their fower bud forms on current season growth.
Just to toss a wrench in, there are ‘rebloom’ or ‘repeat’ bloomer varieties of H. Macrophylla. Fortunately, compact growers requiring little if any pruning. If needed, do so after the frst fush of blooms and only minimally as second bud fush is located along the stem beneath the frst bloom.
Okay now, who is who….
Hydrangea quercifolia or Oakleaf Hydrangea fowers on ‘old wood’. Aptly named for its huge, oakleaf shaped foliage is typically the frst hydrangea to bloom with a ‘panicle’ (think pyramidal) shaped fowerhead. Prefers a slightly acidic, consistently moist soil with morning sun.

Hardy zones 5-8.
Hydrangea macrophylla or Bigleaf Hydrangea is a bit more confusing, it includes both ‘Mophead’ with its round, ball-shaped fower and ‘Lacecap’ that sports a fat terminal bloom with individual forets surrounding a center of what looks like tiny beads. An ‘old wood’ bloomer, so prune after fowering. Consistently moist soil, morning sun.
Bloom color on both can be altered based on pH; blue (acidic pH 5.5 or lower) pink (above 6.0).
Hydrangea serrata or Mountain Hydrangea is another ‘Lacecap’ styled bloom, that blooms on ‘old wood’. Compact species, its foliage tends to be shiny and thicker than other hydrangeas. Same growing needs as H. macrophylla. Soil pH also controls fower color.
Hydrangea arborescens, Smooth Hydrangea fowers on ‘new wood’. This species gets cut down to about 12-inches every winter and tends
to colonize, creating large plantings. Large, white rounded fower heads, that cascade downward due to fower heft. To support fowers, place a tomato cage over crown in early spring. Partial sun, moist soil, zones 4-9.
Hydrangea paniculata, known as Panicle Hydrangea, begins blooming in August with massive white fowers on ‘new wood’. It can be grown as small tree or huge shrub. Extremely hardy, appreciates severe pruning to keep it in check, size wise. Depending on variety, fowers can be panicle or round. Full sun, moist soil, zones 3-8.
Whew, lots of words this week…hope it helps!

The Conclusion: The Fish Story Episode
by David Petronis
~~~~~ Chapter Five ~~~~~
The morning sun was shining bright thru the front windows and I could feel the rays on my closed eyelids. I stretched and peered towards Larry’s bed. He was up and about.
I checked my watch and it was seven-thirty! Wow, I must have slept like a rock. I could smell the coffee and then Larry walked in from the kitchen. “You back from the dead?” He asked. “Yeah, I think so,” I replied. “Good morning, Dear!” I purred.
Then I remembered my gift for the Captain. “Hey, Larr,” I shouted, “I got something for you for your kitchen.” He looked at me as I held up his new apron. “You wanna’ try out that lake again?” He snarled. I just chuckled.
“How about some poached eggs, Captain?” I asked. “If you’re makin’ ‘em, I’m eatin’ ‘em,” came Larry’s reply. I got dressed, washed up and found the essential ingredients for eggs.
The kitchen consisted of a big old gas stove supplied by a ffty-gallon tank of propane out back. Two large burners and a grilling plate did the trick just fne. I buttered four slices of wheat bread and started boiling some water in a small pot. The bread went on the grill and I broke two eggs into the pot. Turn the bread to sear the other side and place on plate. Scoop out two perfect yokes surrounded by boiled white egg and transfer to wheat toast. “Here you go, Larry,” I offered.
He looked at them and took the plate in his hand. He did a little shaking of the plate that made the egg yokes wiggle in their white frame, “Reminds me of a girl I used to date in school!” Larry exclaimed. I must have heard that same comment three hundred and forty-seven times. I still giggled. “Know why breasts are like a good Martini?” He asked. Like a good straight man, I said. “Why Larr?” Then came his zinger, “Cause three is too many and one is not enough,” I thought, 348!
After breakfast and entertainment we straightened up around the camp; put the grill away, sealed up the generator, swept the foors and packed our things. “We’ve got an hour or two for a little fshing before we have to head home,” said Larry. “Let’s try up the shoreline for a while.” The fshing was unproductive with the exception of one salmon I landed pretty close to that old dead log. When we got back to the camp we packed it and Larry’s two trout in the cooler and stowed our other gear in the boat. We were
pretty well ready to start the trip back home. We still didn’t open the two smelly ammo cans and I wondered what to do.
“What do you think, Larr? Should we try to open them here?” I asked. His reply came as a surprise. “They’re your cans, do what you want.”
No, no, I thought. This was our adventure. I might have found them but these are our cans. This is our treasure. “Larry,” I said. “These are our cans. We’ll share what crap we’ll probably fnd inside.” With that I kneeled in front of the cans and tried to open the lid. Forget about it! The rusted front fap didn’t move a millimeter. I bounced it up and down. Didn’t work. “I’ll get a hammer,” Larry said.
I held one and Larry pryed open the latch. It just broke off. Then he banged upwards on the edge of the sealed top. And banged some more. “Flop, bang!” The top few off its rusted hinge and hit the porch foor. The inside of the can looked new. It didn’t look like treasure.
I lifted out a long folded newspaper. It started crumbling as I touched it. The yellowed newsprint was brittle and dry from age but I could read, “Augusta Journal,” and all I could see of a headline was “…MANY SUR……” in big bold type. I looked at the date, “May 5, 1945.”
Without having to open and utterly destroy the folded paper, I knew what the headline would read. “GERMANY SURRENDERS!” There were several other “War News” clippings under the paper and also the “war booty.” About half a dozen metal badges and pins were visible. As were some gray sleeve chevrons and gold felt collar tabs. There was a maroon rolled up cuff title that some Germans wore on their uniform sleeve. Carefully taking it out like a precious jewel, I slowly let it unroll for the gold embroidered letters to expose the words “CONDOR LEGION.” I immediately knew that was a treasure.
“Looks like a bunch of crap to me,” Larry sighed, as he lifted out several assault badges and an old clipping that was a dark brown shade of acid leached newsprint. The small headline read, “Seven prisoners found; one still missing!” “Let’s open the other one.”
I reached for the next box, the heavier one. This is the one with the gold bullion, I thought. We repeated the same hammer process with almost the same bounce of the lid to the foor. This one proved more interesting.
Larry reached inside and retrieved an Army 1911 Colt pistol. You could easily read the stamping on the side of the receiver, “US Government Property.” It was well used but still looked crisp. He pointed it away from us and pushed the button to drop the magazine. It slid out neatly exposing six live rounds of green, corroded ammunition. He pulled back the slide with some extra grunting and out few another corroded round. Fifty years in the soup and still working, I thought.
Neither of us were shocked that the gun was loaded. Generally that is how pistols were stored. Unconsciously we always treat any gun as loaded, this was no exception. What did surprise us was why a young lad would get, and then bury as a treasure, a loaded handgun. “I wonder who put that there?” Larry asked, as he laid the gun on the porch deck.
There was also most of a full box of .45 Caliber Ball Ammunition, so the label stated. Moving around a couple of old photographs and folded papers I noticed some German paper money
with swastikas on it and a few coins. Not much of a treasure by today’s standards, I thought. “Not much here other than the pistol,” I said. “If it’s ok with you I’d like the junk and German stuff and you can have the Colt,” I advised Larry.
“Fine with me,” he said. “Let’s clean this up and get going.” Larry started picking up the discarded ammo can lids. “I’ll fnd a couple of bags,” he said as he went inside.
I carefully took out the photos and clippings and medals and patches.
In Other Words
by Marye
I mostly now am a listener when others deign to tell The details of the happenings in a world I once knew well. Atempts to add a comment are a lesson in defeat. My now outdated outlooks form a pathway of retreat. I venture on, expound upon, the lore that I recall, Knowing well the vacuum into which my words will fall. But on I nater anyway, although I should have known, Though utered with intensity, each word lies mute as stone.
I may regret indignites which living long has brought, But realize that all others will reap that fate unsought. For all on earth are subject to that destned mortal hinge, And the faw in human nature might perceive that as revenge.
Larry returned with several plastic bags and dropped two by me. He picked up the pistol magazine and unloaded it and shoved it back into the Colt’s wood slabbed grip. He put the cartridges back into the box of ammo. “Only three missing.” He said. He put the gun and ammo in the bag and wrapped it up.
Meanwhile, I was busy carefully placing my own treasures in a neat little pile inside one bag. The large folded up newspaper, the clippings, patches and photos. I noticed one was of a boy in what looked like a Hitler Youth outft. That’s neat, I thought. They all went in and I wrapped it all in plastic. The metal items went into the other. I stood up and picked up the cans. “I’ll leave these out back as mementos,” I told Larry. “If you don’t mind, I want to run over to the Doctor’s camp and see if he might be there. “Go ahead.” Larry said. “I guess you did see him after all. Let me know if he’s still around. I’ll get this stuff in the boat. You got everything from inside?”
I told him, yes and left for next door. When I walked up to the front porch of the camp I saw it was deserted. Door and windows shuttered and no life around. I walked over to the water’s edge and looked across the lake to where the old POW camp once stood.
I just gazed out over the water. The sun was getting high by now and a million ripples fashed from the surface of the shimmering water. I wondered what went on there ffty or so years ago. Just like these ripples of water I gazed upon; I wondered how many thousands of separate stories each place like this had. Each little ripple being someone’s contribution to this grand universe.
Why did the Doctor bury that gun and photos and clippings? Why didn’t he just keep all those things right here, in this big house? Why at the little camp? He must have been about fourteen or so, almost a man in those days. Why….?
“You gonna jump in?” Came Larry’s yell. He stopped my day dreaming in a fash as he guided the boat around the small jutting of rocks and trees that separated the camps. “Anybody home?” He yelled.
Back to reality, I managed to say, “No, nobody here. Pull up by the dock and I’ll get in.” Before we had much more meaningless conversation we were back at the State launch site. We trailered the boat, strapped it down and headed south on Route 15 for home. At least for Larry’s shop. “You getting hungry?” Larry asked.
We stopped for lunch at this truck stop where we normally gas up. Didn’t take long and we were on our way again. Back through the little towns towards the turnpike. About all I can remember we talked about was the gun. After two days together there’s not much more to say.
“How come you let me have the .45?” Asked Larry. “I thought you liked .45’s.”
“I do.” I said. “But it’s worth about the same as the other stuff and you know I collect Nazi things. Besides, bringing that pistol back into New York would just be a pain in the ass, besides being illegal! You can take care of it here and do what you want with it.”
“I’ll have the number run to see if it’s OK,” Larry said. “One of the Sheriffs can check it out. If there’s no problem, it’s for sale! If it’s got a history you can watch me throw it into the river. After, I strip the parts.”
In Maine you can legally fnd a pistol or at least a dealer can buy one from an individual who may have inherited it or found it in an attic. Not in New York. If it isn’t registered by someone already, it’s illegal. As a dealer I can’t even buy a pistol from an individual and bring it back into the state. I have to buy it from a dealer or a permit holder. It’s probably why so many guns are foating around illegally, and unregistered, I thought.
The hours passed quickly and by four we were at Larry’s shop. Lorraine greeted us and said, “Cathy called, wondering whether you got in yet.”
“I’ll get my stuff to my van,” I replied, “and give her a call.” I stowed my gear and my treasures and checked the cell phone signal. It was fne here and I called Cathy at the shop. “How are things going there?” I asked, ▶
Schaghticoke & Hoosic Valley
ORevolutionary War Vets in Schaghticoke in 1840
by Chris Kelly, town historian of Schaghticoke
ne of the details of the US 1840 census asked if a man were a military veteran- in Schaghticoke, there were four men who were veterans of the American Revolution. Last week I wrote about the frst of those venerable old men. This week I will talk about Elisha Phelps, aged 82.
According to his application for a veteran’s pension, Elisha was born in Hebron, Connecticut in 1759. Another record stated 1758. He was the son of Barrat (1722-1789) and Hannah Bigelow (d.1808) Phelps. Elisha frst served in a company of Connecticut militia commanded by Captain John Howell Wells. He was drafted to serve for three months on September 5, 1776. The company marched to Westchester, NY. The British Army and Navy had arrived at New York City at the end of June, and had already defeated the American Army under George Washington at the battle of Long Island at the end of August. Most of Washington’s army had retreated northward, towards Westchester. Presumably more militia were called for to continue the battle. Elisha and his company arrived in time for the next step in the battles around New York.
On October 18, 1776 he was on sentinel
▶ “Larry and I just got in.”
Cathy told me all was well, didn’t miss much goings on and asked when I thought I’d be home. It was nice to hear her voice. “I’m leaving soon.” I said. “Plan something for me for dinner around 9:30 or so. Can’t wait to get home.” We had a few pleasantries and I told her a little about our fshing trip. I said, “See you soon,” signed off and put the cell phone back on the dash.
I went inside Larry’s store to say my goodbyes and found him behind his counter. The forty-fve was lying on a red Winchester pad. “Wanna buy a nice Colt?” He asked. He had already called a friend to run the make and serial number and it was cold as ice he informed me. “I’ll take it down tomorrow and get it legalized,” he said.
“By the way, Lorraine said that Doctor died about four years ago,” explained Larry. “A car wreck! So, I don’t know who you were talking to but it sure as hell wasn’t the Doc.”
duty when “the British General Howe’s army” landed at Frogs Neck (now known as Throgs Neck). Wikipedia says this was actually October 28. He fought in what was called the battle of White Plains, then was with the American Army as it retreated to New Rochelle, Rye, and Merrimack. The whole company was discharged on December 5, their term of service up. Washington and his Army crossed the Hudson River at Peekskill and headed for New Jersey.
Elisha and his wife Hannah Holaberd had a daughter Catherine in October 1779. Shortly after, they moved to Cambridge, Washington County, I don’t know why. His parents moved here too. Of course he was now part of the militia in New York, and in fall 1780 he was drafted into a company commanded by Captain Adiel Sherwood, of Washington County. Adiel was a Lieutenant and Captain in regiments of the NY Line, the state regiments. Elisha spent two months at Fort Ann doing garrison duty as part of Colonel Livingston’s Regiment, a battalion of the NY Line.
I think Elisha and Hannah must have lived somewhere on the border of Rensselaer and
“I got a clipping in the mail from Doc’s daughter,” Lorraine pitched in. “It’s around here somewhere.” Looking at the back counter I fgured she’d fnd it in a few years.
“Well, I don’t know what to tell you,” I explained, “I talked to an old man who told me his name was Doctor Kramer.” I emphasized the name! “And we found exactly what he told me about. You fgure it out! I’ve got to get on the road. Thanks for the trip, Larry.” With a tip of my imaginary hat to Lorraine, I headed out the door and began the long drive home.
I made a stop for gas and coffee and made it home just about on schedule. Cathy greeted me with food and a big kiss as usual. I always enjoy both. Over a late dinner I told her about my trip, about the Doctor and what we found. I’d show her my stuff in the morning. For now, a nice hot shower and our king size bed were high on my list for best things in life.
Washington Counties for a couple of reasons. First, Elisha and Hannah had Catherine baptized in the Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church in 1781. Second, he appears in the census both in Rensselaer and Washington Counties, depending on the year. In 1790 and 1800 he was in Schaghticoke, in 1810 and 1830 in Cambridge. One source says Elisha was married three times, but I know he was married at least twice, the second time to Clarissa Baker, the sister of Ezekiel Baker, who was THE doctor in town around 1830. She is mentioned as the wife of Elisha Phelps in Ezekiel’s 1836 will. By the 1840 US Census, Clarissa had died. Elisha was living in the family of Ezekiel’s brother Truman Baker, who was a farmer in Schaghticoke. I don’t think Elisha ever had any children. I believe he died in 1841, as that is when his pension payments ceased.
I am always struck by the willingness of 18th century folks to pack up and move, in the case of Elisha and Hannah, in the middle of a war and with a newborn baby. Very intrepid people! Next week, another vet. The illustration is a painting of George Washington by Charles Willson Peale, property of the White House Historical Assn, done in 1776.
‘State of Moving’ Survey Unpacks Relocation Frustrations
Moving today is harder than ever—and not just because the couch won’t ft through the door—economic pressures, tighter budgets and a widespread disdain for packing are casting a shadow over the task.
According to a recent survey conducted by Duck brand, a leading maker of packing and moving supplies, the aversion toward packing runs so deep that over two-thirds of Americans say they’d rather do almost anything else—like serving on a jury (20%), getting a root canal (14%) or even shaving their head (9%).
Today’s economic climate also is giving potential movers pause. Nearly 80% of Americans have thought twice about moving due to the current state of the economy, citing concerns such as coming up with a security deposit or down payment. Over 40% have either adjusted their moving timeline, or delayed or called off a move due to the impacts of higher housing costs or infation, with 70% of people saying moving now is more expensive compared to past moves. For individuals who are still planning to relocate, a major reason is moving to an area with a better cost of living.
How are those packing up the moving truck making the move more feasible? By scaling back and spending less. Thirty-seven percent are cutting back on eating out to help afford a move, and 34% are taking on side gigs to help with the cost. Additionally, nearly half (45%) are heavily decluttering to save money on packing and moving expenses, while 32% plan to skip out on professional movers entirely to stretch their budgets.
“While the fnancial strain is a large piece of the moving puzzle, what’s interesting is that one in four people still say packing everything up is the most frustrating part of moving,” says ▶
▶ Heather Hammond, senior manager, Packing Tapes at Duck brand. “Luckily, we can help with both. At Duck brand, we offer affordable, highquality packing and moving supplies that are easy to use and help streamline expenses, while also providing the durability essential to keep items safe and protected during a move.”
Considering that nearly 75% of people have had poor quality moving supplies cause a disaster during a move, prioritizing sturdy boxes, highperforming bubble cushioning for fragile items and easy-to-use packing tape can make all the difference in simplifying the moving process. Choosing products like Duck Max Strength Packing Tape, which is designed to seal even the heaviest boxes safely and securely, can help prevent items inside from being damaged during delivery.
To learn more about the Duck brand products that help make packing and moving stress-free, visit https://www.duckbrand.com/products/movingstorage.
While moving can certainly test our patience and wallets, it also has a way of bringing people together. The majority of Americans, almost 90%, are willing to help their friends and family move with only the promise of pizza as repayment. (StatePoint)
Senator Tedisco joined with Saratoga County Under Sheriff Jeff Brown, Saratoga County Clerk and owner of Hayner’s Ice Cream and Country Store in Halfmoon Craig Hayner, and Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett to lead the Southern Saratoga County YMCA summer camp attendees in a bike ride and then scooped free ice cream donated by Stewart’s Shops.
This year, Senator Tedisco’s Safe Summer Program will distribute 5,000 “good tickets” for free ice cream cones to 12 police departments to reward children who wear their helmets while bicycling, skateboarding, and rollerblading, and give free bike helmets to kids who need one.
Tedisco’s Safe Summer program is made possible thanks to donations from participating businesses: Stewart’s Shops, Hayner’s Ice Cream and Country Store in Halfmoon, Ben & Jerry’s, and Friendly’s. The law frm of Harding Mazzotti LLP is donating hundreds of new bike helmets to police departments in Saratoga and Schenectady Counties to distribute to children who need them.
It’s the law in New York State that children up to age 14 must wear a bicycle helmet or parents could face a $50 fne. The cost of a bicycle helmet is about $30.00. The average charge for a hospital stay due to a bicycle related brain injury is $18,900 with an average length of stay of four days. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, non-helmet
bike riders are 14 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than helmeted riders. Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injury by 60 percent and brain injury by 58 percent. It’s estimated that 75 percent of bike-related fatalities among children could be prevented with a helmet. Universal use of bicycle helmets by children ages 4 to 15 could prevent between 135 and 155 deaths, between 39,000 and 45,000 head injuries, and between 18,000 and 55,000 scalp and face injuries annually.
Senator Tedisco’s Safe Summer Program aims to address these alarming statistics by using positive reinforcement to get all neighborhood kids into the habit of wearing their helmets for safe biking, in-line skating, or riding a skateboard or scooter.
Participating police departments that will distribute free ice cream coupons and bike helmets to kids include: Saratoga County Sheriff, Schenectady County Sheriff, Ballston Spa Police, Clifton Park Town Security, Mechanicville Police, Niskayuna Police, City of Rensselaer Police, Saratoga Springs Police, City of Schenectady Police, South Glens Falls Police, Stillwater Police, and Waterford Police. Coupons also will be distributed to the Southern Saratoga YMCA.
Inspired by the Scriptures and strengthened by the Sacraments, we proclaim Christ’s redeeming love for all.
Water is a mysterious thing. It is so clear and so frictionless... So “modest,” as St. Francis of Assisi called it. It seems to have no other purposet than to be of service: to cleanse what is soiled, and to refresh what is dry.
But perhaps sometime you must have gazed
down into the still depths of a great body of water, and felt it tugging to draw you in: and have gotten a hint of the strange and secret thing that water is, and of the marvels, enticements and terrors that lurk in its depths.
It is indeed a strange element. On the one hand smooth and transparent, as if it hardly existed in its own right, ready at hand to wash away dirt and satisfy thirs --; and on the other a restless, enigmatic force that entices us on to risk destruction.
It is a proper image for the secret groundsource from which life issues, and back into which death recalls it. It is an apt image for this life of ours – looks so clear it is so inexplicable.
The Church uses water as a sign in the believer of the divine life of grace. We emerge from the waters of baptism into a new life, born again of water and the Holy Spirit.
With this element, that yields no answer to our questioning; with this transparent, frictionless, fecund fuid, symbol and means of the supernatural life of grace, we make on ourselves, from forearm to breast, shoulder to shoulder, the Sign of the Cross.
By her consecration of it, the Church has freed water from the dark powers that sleep in it. Anyone whose perceptions have not been blunted must be aware of the powers of natural magic inherent in water.
And are they only natural powers? Is there not present also a dark and preternatural power? In nature, for all her richness and beauty, there is something demonic. City life has so darkened our senses that we have lost our perception of it. But the Church knows it is there. She “exorcises” out of water those divinities that are an enemy with God. She bless it and asks of God to make of it a vehicle of his grace.
• SPIRIT continued from page 17 •
human nature is formed and fashioned for light. Just before we give ourselves over into the power of sleep and darkness, and the light of day and consciousness is extinguished, there is a satisfaction in making the sign of the cross on ourselves with holy water.
Holy Water is the symbol of nature set free from sin. May God protect us from every form of darkness! And at morning, when we emerge again and out of sleep, darkness and unconsciousness, life begins afresh, we do the same thing.
But in the morning it is to remind ourselves, with that Holy Water, of our own Baptism, from which we have been brought into the Light of Christ.
POOKA: Mix, female, 3 years, 25 lbs. Introducing Pooka, the delightful dynamo ready to bring endless joy to your life! This 25-pound bundle of love adores her person and is always up for some snuggles. She would prefer not to share her home/people/toys/ food on a regular basis. Pooka has a very active play style with lots of running and wrestling. She is already housebroken, and a well-behaved companion in the car. With her higher energy level, Pooka would thrive with an adopter who has a fexible schedule and can give her the attention she craves. She is a dog that needs both daily exercise and mental stimulation (toys, etc.) to be her best self.
SIMON: Lab mix, male, 11 years, 60 lbs. Needs foster home. Simon is a happy boy with a heart full of love and a tail that wags for car rides. After the loss of his lifelong owner, Simon found himself at a local shelter, but he hasn’t lost his gentle spirit or his love for people. He’s housebroken, walks nicely on a leash, and has a healthy, easygoing energy level that makes him a joy to have around. Simon is friendly with everyone he meets and would thrive in a home where he can bond with a favorite person. While he seems to do fne with cats based on a brief interaction, introductions would need to be made thoughtfully. He’ll also need to meet any potential canine housemates to ensure it’s a good ft. Thanks to Peppertree, Simon will be getting a dental cleaning to keep him feeling his best. All that’s missing now is a cozy home and someone to love him back. Could that be you?
The well-being of veterans is a priority here in Saratoga County. In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifce of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.
Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans fle their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Offce, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifce by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.
FISHING
Summer at the Lake
Here it is 4th of July, it’s stopped raining, and the water is almost bathtub warm – not my type of fshing weather.
I’m not and never have been a warmwater angler, I’ll go out in the rowboat and throw a ShadRap or Pop-R with hopes of enticing a wayward pickerel or smallmouth to bite or to dunk nightcrawlers off the dock at dusk hoping for a bullhead, but no grand efforts like striper or salmon season.
I did upgrade the old (1972) Montgomery Ward 12’ ft. aluminum Sea King, spending $100 on new oars and oar locks.
First time out, I tallied one hammer handle size pickerel but due to utter laziness, I haven’t tried since.
Further impeding my angling desire is getting in and out of the rowboat. What was once an easy task is now a clumsy ordeal that needs my wife’s help—aging is a real pain the the “you know where”!
But there are fsh to be caught in our lake and proving that were brothers from the next camp
over. Two nights ago, Mason, using a minnow he caught as bait, landed a smallmouth bass, took a photo, then released it. And, not to be outdone by his older brother, Sam managed to capture an equally impressive pickerel that paused for a picture and was released.
I’m sure they’ll be back on the dock in the coming days.
On the other side of the lake Henry was having success chasing a different aquatic creature, managing to capture this Eastern Painted Turtle for a quick pic followed by a release back to the lake.
Ah, “summer at the lake” making memories and smiles.
That’s about all so far this summer though it is early. Waiting on the blueberries and mushrooms to make their appearance.
CADDYSHACK LEAGUE
BY BRAD CONE
Caddyshackers Set
New Pars Record
The members of the Caddyshack league continued their strong start to the second half on Wednesday. Competing on the par-36 front nine at Saratoga Lake Golf Club in Stillwater, over half the league posted “net” (actual minus handicap) scores under par, a dozen personal bests were matched or broken, and the league combined for an incredible 107 pars.
Leading the charge were father-son duo Matt and Jake Fauler. Jake played his frst two holes in one-UNDER-par while Matt carded six pars as both men posted career best rounds of 46 net 34 and 40 net 33, respectively.
The Faulers used those scores to overcome strong rounds of 40 net 35 and 39 net 35 from Bill and Brad Cone earning them 6.5 points and jumping them into frst place in the Division II second half standings.
Keeping pace right behind the Faulers is fellow father-son tandem Bruce J. and Bruce M. Sausville. The Sausvilles were able to garner seven points in their match as Bruce M. bagged six pars on his way to a 41 net 35 while Bruce J. (making his season debut after spending the frst half on the injured list) started his 2025 campaign with a sound 47 net 35.
Over in Division III, Trevor Marsh and Jeff Vienneau continued their historic pace. After winning the frst half with a near-record 63.5 points, the Saratoga Lake staffers won seven points on Wednesday bringing their second half total to a
division-leading 15.5 points (out of 22 possible) through two weeks.
Trevor snagged his outstanding sixth birdie of the year (tied for the second highest total in the entire league) while Jeff posted an excellent 43 net 31.
Two other squads also had big nights in Division III as Doug Crossman/Fritz Ludwig and Ron Colvin/Glen Stone captured 8.5 and nine points in their matches to keep Trevor and Jeff within arm’s reach.
Fritz shot a solid 50 net 34 while Doug tallied six pars en route to a 43 net 34. Doug’s six pars tied his personal best and brought him to 402 pars for his career (becoming just the ninth Caddyshacker to reach that milestone).
Meanwhile, Ron and Glen never lost a hole outright as Glen posted a nice 50 net 35 and Ron a career night. One of the league’s founding members, Ron snared a personal best six pars on his way to an astounding career best-tying three-over 39 net 30.
In Division I, Bruce Bailey and Bob Lang took over the top spot after a huge 8.5-point performance on Wednesday. Bruce tallied a serviceable 46 net 37 while Bob played his fnal three holes in one-UNDER-par on his way to a nice 43 net 33.
Also making noise in Division I were fatherson pair Mark and Chris LeFever. The Caddyshack rookies captured eight points on Wednesday thanks to excellent rounds of 41 net 32 and 40 net 35, respectively.
A quartet of Cad-
dyshackers rounded out the night’s top scores. League ace Josh Wysocki singlehandedly won 7.5 points on the strength of a skilled 39 net 35. Logan Mancari set a new personal best with fve pars on his way to a 46 net 33. First-year Caddyshacker Duane Mysliwiec had his frst breakout night with a stout 39 net 33.
But the biggest story of the night may have been from league sophomore Mike Shaffer. After starting his round with the hardest three-hole stretch on the front nine (Holes 8, 9, and 1), Mike reeled off an unbelievable fve pars over his last six holes en route to a career best 45 net 31. Mike’s fve pars smashed his previous best for pars in a round of two.
Duane Mysliwiec added to his strong night by capturing Wednesday’s longest putt prize. Duane buried an impressive 18-foot six-inch putt on the par-4 fourth to take home the $10 award. Fellow Caddyshacker Dan Drake sponsored the competition.
The Player of the Week selection committee had one of their hardest decisions of the season on Wednesday.
The Faulers matching personal bests, Josh Wysocki’s singlehanded 7.5 points, and Duane Mysliwiec’s breakout 39 were all worthy contenders. Ron Colvin’s personal best tying 39 also made a loud statement. Ultimately just edging out those outstanding performances was Mike Shaffer as the second-year player more than doubled his personal best for pars in a round on his way to a career score of 45 net 31.
Next week will mark the last week of interdivisional matches before the Caddyshackers spend the fnal fve weeks of the regular season competing against only teams from their own group.
One big match that everyone will be watching next week will feature Division I leaders Bruce Bailey/Bob Lang against Division II frontrunners Matt Fauler/Jake Fauler. The outcome of that match could have major repercussions in two divisions.
Tune in next week as the Caddyshackers try to continue their torrid second half start. And as always, check out the league website at www.caddyshackleague.com for stats, matchups, and more info.
