echanicville’s varsity boys’ basketball team recognized the teachers and staff members who have had an impact on their lives prior to last Wednesday’s game against Greenville. Each player chose someone who has made learning fun, or encouraged them to do their best, or supported them when they were struggling at school, people who have made their lives better every day. A pamphlet was distributed with the players’
thoughts on the staff members’ contribution to their daily lives at school.
With Larry Grayson announcing, the players were called out one by one to meet their chosen honoree at mid-court.
Four of the players chose Joe Yankowski, long time history teacher at MHS, recognizing his love of learning and his ability to keep his class light-hearted. Jack Salvadore, Landon Bronson, Ryan Gaba and Brody Bergeron-Waite all chose to recognize Mr. Yankowski.

Goings on in the Area
Mechanicville has not changed its garbage hauler. In 2023 Twin Bridges was sold to Casella. As a result, when garbage bins are replaced, the new color is blue. Same company, just different colors.
There is a rock salt shortage throughout the state. The Town of Stillwater has a shortage as does the Town of Schaghticoke.
Congratulations to Mechanicville’s DiMaggio Ferrar and Marcus Robinson. Each signed their letters of intent to play college football. They each made a big impact.
There is a crisis in Rensselaer County due to the lack of EMS coverage. There is a meeting in Poetenskill to discuss this.
We regret Hoosic Valley withdrawing from the football program it shared with Mechanicville. For the last three years the schools had cooperated to field a football team. Each school will be going its own way.

New York State Announces $1 Million is Available to New York Farmers’ Markets
THIRD ROUND OF FUNDING HELPS FARMERS’ MARKETS CONTINUE TO BUILD RESILIENCE, MAKE IMPROVEMENTS, REACH MORE CONSUMERS,
New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball today announced that $1 million is available to New York’s farmers’ markets through the third round of the Farmers’ Market Resiliency Grant Program. Grant funding will help farmers’ markets across the state to enhance local food system resiliency by improving market infrastructure, modernizing systems, and increasing marketing and promotions efforts. Funding for the program was included in the New York State Budget and builds on Governor Hochul’s commitment to ensure a resilient food system in New York State. Awards for Round 2 of the program were announced in 2024.
Commissioner Ball said, “Our farmers’ markets are a staple in our communities, offering the opportunity for New Yorkers to purchase fresh local food and connect with their farmers, while providing a market for New York agricultural producers. Through this program, we are seeing terrific projects that are helping our markets increase their promotional efforts to reach even more consumers and funding online platforms that are not only making it easier for farmers to do business but encouraging sales at participating locations. That means our families can take advantage of all that our farmers’ markets offer, including supplemental benefits for our underserved communities.”
Funding through the Farmers’ Market Resiliency Grant Program is available for projects that help markets build out infrastructure, including booths, signage, and cold storage, and electronic infrastructure like website development, including online sales capabilities. Projects may also include marketing and promotion initiatives for markets across the state, helping to expand their reach to more consumers. Projects funded should help the food system remain resilient, especially when supply chain disrup-

tions occur, and help foster a commitment to long-term market viability, sustainability, and accessibility.
Grants ranging from $25,000 to $50,000 will be awarded to successful applicants. Eligibility criteria and more information on the program, including how to apply, can be found on the Department’s website at link. The deadline for applications is 3:00 pm Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Applications for funding must conform to the format provided in the SFS and will be awarded on a rolling basis until funds are expended. A webinar with program information will take place on February 26 at 12:00 pm. Learn more and register.
Farmers’ markets, farm stands, and mobile markets are crucial components to a healthy food system. Today, New York has more than 400 farmers’ markets, 250 farm stands, and 10 mobile market operators.

Comfort Works Creates Backpacks
by Sandy McBride
The Comfort Works Mission of St. Luke’s on the Hill has for the past seven years gathered weekly to create hand-crafted items that would indeed provide comfort in various ways to people going through trying times, including those suffering from cancer and heart ailments, as well as infants in the NICU and even pillowcase dresses for children in need in African nations. They have created pillows, blankets, seat belt cushions and even knit caps for service men and women serving at sea during the cold months. And now they have added to their repertoire colorful and spacious backpacks which will be given to Wellspring of Saratoga, an organization that has for forty years provided shelter and support for women suffering from relationship abuse and sexual abuse.
In early February, Rev. Michael Todd, pastor of St. Luke’s on the Hill, blessed the backpacks
which were arrayed on the altar during the weekend services. They will be given to Wellspring to be provided to people seeking their help and assistance.
Comfort Works meets every Wednesday in the Great Room at St. Luke’s on the Hill from one o’clock until four o’clock, and welcomes anyone who wishes to join in their efforts. Even if you aren’t an experienced seamstress or needleworker, all hands are needed for various tasks.

Finally her department filed the paperwork to document what City did with the $500,000 in COVID money. Failure to do so would have meant the return of the money. Community Life Support of Schaghticoke: Highlights of 2024 and Initiatives for 2025
by Christine Barton
Community Life Support (CLS) of Schaghticoke celebrates the accomplishments of the past years and looks towards their goals for 2025. The group has been active in the community since prior to 2019. CLS formalized their operations in September of 2019 when they received their 501c3 status with New York State. In March 2020 they established a full board of directors and began expanding their reach in the community.
At the close of 2024 there were many accomplishments to recognize says Lynne Hardy, President of Community Life Support of Schaghticoke. It was a good year; we worked together well she adds, noting the many new initiatives for 2025.
The mission of Community Life Support, is to provide “multiple approaches that encourage healthy lifestyles through education, services, and opportunities” Community Life Support, desires to build community capacity through volunteer opportunities, activities, events, and services. Since their inception, CLS has engaged the community in several surveys to discern possible areas of interest and worked guide their efforts from this community feedback. The group continues to welcome feedback, ideas and involvement from the community.
CLS is designed to be the umbrella for the Schaghticoke Community Builders, the Schaghticoke Food Pantry, and the Health and Wellness Programs. The operations are housed in the Schaghticoke United Presbyterian Church located at 165 Main Street which is also under the CLS umbrella.
The success and generous support of the
community encourage us to keep moving ahead.” says Hardy. CLS has grown the annual Strawberry Festival in June which was hosted for the second year at the Schaghticoke fairgrounds. This past year was the biggest and largest attended event since its inception. The group also co-hosts the Harvest Festival at the end of September as well they host Christmas Around the Cor ner in early November. In ad dition to annual community events the group also organizes monthly and weekly events such as monthly soup sales, community dinners, hosted by area businesses and organizations and hold regular raffles and fundraisers. The group also partners with the Presbyterian United Church to put on the annual garage sale in May. In 2023 CLS launched a scholarship for Hoosic Valley high school students. A variety of health and wellness classes are now being held weekly. These currently include; Tai Chi, a monthly meditation group, children’s groups, a weekly walking group and a cancer support group to name a few. New groups are added throughout the year. An updated list of available groups can be viewed on the CLS Facebook page.
The annual Food Pantry Basket Raffle Open House Anniversary Celebration this year will be held on March 15, 2025 starting at 10am. Over 80 baskets donated by the community will be available for raffle. In 2024 the basket raffle raised over $4,300 for the food pantry. All proceeds go to support food pantry operations.
In 2024 Community Life Support introduced 2 new branches of their growing tree. The Greater Hoosic Valley Community Business Alliance and the Community Center Initiative which will be a continued focus for 2025. As spring fast approaches, the CLS Board is in the process of moving forward planning the annual events as well as developing and growing these new initiatives.
The Schaghticoke Food Pantry, now in the sixth year of operation is a large part of the mission of CLS. Annual statistics show the pantry serves on average a total of 94 people per month which meets a need that silently exists in the community. In 2024 the pantry clocked over 1500 hours of volunteer time and 15,000 pounds of food were processed through the pantry to families in the local community. Again, this year for Thanksgiving and Christmas, between Pittstown and Schaghticoke over 80 local families were supported during the holidays.
On April 12, 2025 the Living Well Health Fair will be held from 10am to 3pm at the Hoosic Valley gym. This will be the third year for this successful event. As well as some of the returning events, other educational events and workshops are being planned for the remainder of the year. The group continues to build alliances with other community organizations such as the Victor Masonic Lodge, the school district, area churches and local businesses. These relationships help to strengthen community initiatives.
Our ongoing goal for 2025 is to continue to be of service in the best way possible. We aim to increase our presence on the town and village boards and increase communication between the towns, villages and hamlets so we can work together to meet the collective needs of our community says Hardy.
Community support is crucial to our mission says Hardy. There are several ways get involved she says. Donate: Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference. Visit this link on GiveButter for CLS support: https://givebutter.com/b1XrKv to give. Spread the Word: Share our mission with friends and family. Follow us on social media by visiting our Facebook page or the Community Life Support Website at CLSSchaghticoke.com. CLS looks forward to growing the already established initiatives and building out the new initiatives that are on the horizon. Hardy, on behalf of the CLS board, is “grateful for the support and commitment to making our community a better place.”

.A. Dunn Landfill – The Legislature unanimously approved a resolution (P/63/25) urging the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Governor Hochul to revisit and reverse the recent approval of the operating permit for the landfill. Snow Days Remembered by
Snookie
How wonderful it was for us to hear:
School is closed today, too much snow, I fear.
So with a smile we jump out of bed.
A quick bowl of cereal; and we are fed.
Now put on our snowsuits, hats, boots and gloves
And play in the snow like everyone loves.
Build a snowman, and slide down the hill, Out all day till we’ve had our fill.
Then off with the wet clothes, on with the dry, Perhaps have some hot cocoa or a piece of that pie.
Those happy snow days fill our hearts with joy, Fun times to remember for every girl and boy.
From those great memories of our youth, we’ll never part. They will live forever, in both our mind and heart.

Door Design Tips to Enhance Your Home’s Beauty and Value
hen choosing doors for your home, remember that careful selections can improve not only your home’s beauty and value, but also your quality of life. Here are a few door types to consider, along with their benefits: Elevate with exterior French doors: French doors double the design impact, and elevate the front entryway and curb appeal of any home. Manufacturers like ProVia offer customizations on every element of French doors so you can make a truly unique statement. Start by choosing from various styles, materials and finishes. Then, consider the addition of sidelites, transoms and decorative or privacy glass. Given how many factors you have control over, it’s helpful to use a design tool to configure the door of your dreams. Visit provia. com/design-center to get started. Rest assured,
no matter what your end results look like, there are a few factors you won’t have to worry about with ProVia doors: durability and energy efficiency. Virtually every possible combination of door style, glass, sidelite and transom is built to last a lifetime and is ENERGY STAR certified.
Protect with storm doors: Storm doors provide doors and homes with an extra layer of protection from moisture, heat, wind, rain and other elements. Everyone has different requirements though. Fortunately, storm doors can be individually customized to meet your practical and aesthetic needs. Depending on where you live, factors like the thickness and construction of the storm door can make a big difference in its performance. You’ll also want to investigate your glass and screen options for added fresh air circulation in your home. While storm doors are often thought about more in terms of their functionality, it’s important to keep in mind that varying hardware options, styles and paint finishes allow you to seamlessly blend yours in with the aesthetic of your home.
Bring the outside in with sliding glass patio doors: Want to bathe your home interiors with light and the beauty of your natural surroundings? One of the most effective, low-maintenance ways to do just that is with vinyl sliding glass patio doors. Those from ProVia are tested against the most stringent industry standards for air and water infiltration, wind load resistance, ease of operation and more. For more design tips, visit provia.com.
For a true return on your home improvement project, consider how a door replacement can elevate your home’s style while protecting it from the elements. (StatePoint)
adon—an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas found in homes and buildings at high levels throughout the United States—is the second leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 21,000 deaths each year, and the leading cause of lung cancer among people who don’t smoke.
The American Lung Association is partnering with Protect Environmental to educate and empower communities nationwide to take action to prevent lung cancer this January, which is National Radon Action Month, and throughout the year. As part of the campaign, they are answering some frequently asked questions about radon:
What is radon? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas emitted from the ground. Uranium in soil and rocks breaks down to form radium. As radium decays, radioactive particles (radon gas) are released into the air.
Why is radon found in buildings? Radon gas enters buildings through cracks in walls, basements, floors, foundations, and potentially, through water used in showers and faucets, trapping it inside.
Why is radon harmful? Radon gas particles can be inhaled in your lungs, attacking cells with dangerous, cancer-causing radiation. Radon exposure has no immediate symptoms; however, the long-term threat of health problems, including lung cancer, is serious.
How is radon detected? The only way to know the radon level in your home and workplace is to conduct a radon test. Dangerous radon levels have been found in every state, so every building should be regularly tested. Testing is the first step in reducing risk of radon-induced lung cancer and is recommended every two to five years, even if you have a mitigation system. The Lung Association and Protect Environmental are offering free radon test kits to homeowners in select communities across the United States.
• RADON continues on page 14 •
• RADON continued from page 13 •
Visit Lung.org/protect-environmental to learn more and check your eligibility for receiving a test kit.
What should I do if I detect high radon levels? Radon gas is measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon if levels are 4.0 pCi/L or greater, and to consider similar actions when the radon level is between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L. If you discover high radon levels in your home, a radon mitigation system should be installed to reduce the amount of radon to a safer level. Just be sure you work with a professional who is certified in radon mitigation. Using unqualified professionals may lead to faulty installation, which can cause property damage and even increase indoor radon levels.
The American Lung Association’s campaign to raise awareness on the importance of radon testing is supported by Protect Environmental. For more information, visit Lung.org/protect-environmental.
“I’ve been to too many homes where no one knew to test for radon until someone in the home got the devastating diagnosis of lung cancer,” says Kyle Hoylman, chief executive officer of Protect Environmental. “Taking action to reduce radon through mitigation and regular testing is an investment in the lung health of everyone in the building and could be a lifesaving improvement.”
TOWN OF SCHAGHTICOKE

The village of Schaghticoke had not had an industrial base in at least ten years, but it still had a number of businesses, and was actually increasing in population. The Hoosac Valley Farmers’ Exchange, which had begun in 1925, supported the surrounding farming community in a major way. It was part of the Grange League Federation, a farmer cooperative, sold GLF products, and operated much as it does today. It also ground corn for farmers from the start, a feature not available at many other mills. (John Halford, 20 Apr 2021)

In 1944 the HVFE added a new feature, frozen storage lockers. Families could rent their personal cooler, as we would use a home chest freezer today- with space for meat, vegetables, and fruit. (TR 25 Jan 1944) There were about 450 lockers. This building is located just up Lower Main Street from the old Agway store in the village of Schaghticoke and operated until 1967. Part of the cooling for the lockers was water from the Hoosic River. The building was constructed by Frank Antolick, and featured a fast freezing room besides the lockers. Gail

Earl Brenenstuhl of Pittstown was manager of the plant in the 1950’s, followed by Nelson Betts. The freezer plant also ran a butcher operation, primarily for beef, but also for hogs, venison, and the occasional bear. Patrons could bring their quarter of beef to the store and have it butchered there before freezing. They imported beef from Levonians in Troy and processed it for restaurants and the Hoosic Valley School cafeteria. One of the major renters of lockers was Woods turkey farm in Melrose. (John Halford, 20 Apr 2021) The plant closed due to onerous new state regulations imposed in 1967, which would have required extensive renovation.
People could still shop in the village of Schaghticoke. The school was at the north end of the village, along with the Clum’s gas station at the corner. Sisters Edna (1894-1965) and Vera (1886-1966) Stokes operated the “tea room” which became the Schag-a-val from at least 1940 to 1950. According to Dick Lohnes’ “Centennial Booklet” the tea room was begun by Mr and Mrs Irving Wiley in 1933. The Stokes were from Waterford. Just south on route 40, Harry (19121994) and Charlotte (1921-2012) Wanko opened an auto repair garage at the end of the decade. According to Dick Lohnes’ “Centennial Booklet”, a building was moved from down Main Street to form the core of the Wanko service station in 1937. The 1950 US Census listed Charlotte, 29, as her husband’s assistant. They ran the garage for 33 years, according to Charlotte’s obituary. The illustrations are of the freezer plant- from Dick Lohnes’ “Centennial Booklet” and an ad from the 1940’s for the plant. Next week, more about the village in the 1940’s.

he Birth of Saratoga County: February 7, 1791. On a cold February day in 1791, Saratoga County officially separated from Albany County, marking its beginning as an independent community. Known as “Saratoga” by Indigenous peoples and later formalized by colonial settlers, the county has long been defined by its strategic location, historical significance, and hardworking residents. For over 230 years, Saratoga’s foundation has been shaped by values of resilience, civic engagement, and industriousness, creating a vibrant community that honors its past while embracing progress. Before 1791: Evolving Boundaries and Communities. Before becoming a county, Saratoga’s boundaries were part of Albany County, with its governance structure evolving over time. A major milestone came in 1684 with the Saratoga Patent, which granted settlers six miles of land along both sides of the Hudson River from Mechanicville to the mouth of the Battenkill.By 1772, the area was divided into two districts, Half Moon and Saraghtoga, marking the start of local governance. In 1788, New York State formally established towns within Saratoga, including Halfmoon, Saratoga, Ballston, and Stillwater. Three years later, these towns separated from Albany County to form Saratoga County, ushering in a new era of self-governance.
Saratoga: The “Mother of Towns.” As communities expanded, Saratoga became known as the “mother of towns.” In 1775, Ballstown branched off as a new district, and in 1789, East Town (now part of Washington County) separated. These changes reflected Saratoga’s growing role in shaping local governance. The county’s contributions to the nations founding ▶
▶ solidified its historical importance. The Battles of Saratoga, the turning point of the Revolutionary War, demonstrated the region’s resilience and strategic importance.
Geography: A Key to Saratoga’s Growth. Saratoga’s geography has always been central to its development. Nestled between the Hudson and Mohawk rivers and crossed by waterways like the Kayaderosseras Creek and Sacandaga River, the county’s location served as a crossroads of early trade and travel. Fertile farmland and abundant natural resources attracted settlers who built the agricultural and economic foundations for Saratoga’s prosperity.
Civic Engagement: A Lasting Tradition. From its earliest days, Saratoga County residents valued self-governance and community involvement. County, City and Town government leaders partner with private businesses and nonprofit societies to create a culture of collective responsibility. Today, this spirit continues. Residents engage in preserving historical sites, supporting sustainable development, and promoting civic pride—ensuring these values remain central to the county’s identity.
Resilience and Modern Growth. Saratoga County’s history is filled with stories of perseverance. From the Revolutionary War to the Industrial Revolution and beyond, the community has adapted to challenges while building a thriving economy.
Modern Saratoga County is home to a diverse range of economic activities, including tourism, healthcare, technology, farming and manufacturing. Landmarks such as the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), Skidmore College, and the Saratoga Racetrack enrich the county’s intellectual and cultural life. Visitors are drawn by its historical sites, scenic landscapes,
and recreational opportunities, further boosting the local economy.
A Legacy of Independence and Progress. Since 1791, Saratoga County has grown from four towns to include nineteen towns, several villages and two cities. The values of resilience, self-reliance, and industriousness that defined its early settlers remain at the heart of its modern identity. From town meetings to thriving businesses, residents continue to honor its history while looking ahead to new opportunities for growth. Saratoga County’s journey—rooted in its rich history, strategic geography, and enduring values—is a story of progress that connects the achievements of the past to the promise of tomorrow.

Veterans
The well-being of veterans is a priority here in Saratoga County. In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.
Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans file their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Office, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifice by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.

St. Luke’s on the Hill
Inspired by the Scriptures and strengthened by the Sacraments, we proclaim Christ’s redeeming love for all.
The “Aha! moment,” also known as the eureka effect, refers to the (actually not uncommon) human experience of an individual suddenly grasping a previously incomprehensible problem, concept, or deeper experience of insight.
The ancient Hebrews (and early Christians) had such an experience, through the medium of inspired men and women. In fact they had it repeatedly until, differing from peoples around them, they came to have a very concrete, direct sense of God in everything... everywhere... in every time.
It is the kind of thing of which, as we say,

“It’s hard to find the words for.” In this case, the words were given to them: “The Word of the Lord came to” them -- through prophets and inspired writers. Over time they applied those words to different parts of their experience, and developed their own theology - a term from the Greek, and meaning basically “God talk.”
Now, that God-talk always remains symbolic language to varying degree -- As we say of analogies, it always “limps” a little. It has to: We creatures are limited in our ability to comprehend – let alone explain in depth – divine verities.
Now, the ancient Hebrews had very “down to earth” theological language. In fact, rather differently from today’s ordered discourses, it took the form of stories that sought to express, and pass on an experience of God in their lives -- even the emotions involved -- in order to assure that they could be re-experienced by generations to follow, because important to their faith identity.
They were so convinced of that constant presence of a very-real God, and His role in their ongoing existence, they even felt quite free now and then to give Him a hard time -- an argument,
even getting a little testy, over some happening they could not understand.
You see many examples in prophetic utterances, and in the Psalms. Sure, they

believed that God was on their side ... but for some reasons He seemed at some times not “on their side” as much as they expected ... But faith and trust in the Lord, in all those passages, wins out in the end.
(Some of that sense is also still with those wonderful folks the Jews, even to our time ... An example, for those who have seen “Fiddler on the Roof,” shines in his portrayal of the father of the family, Tevye, and all the deep wonderings he talked his way through with his faith. They were a people also convinced of a very present and concretely provident God, whom they daily saw at work, especially in things outside themselves, definitely not within THEIR power. Still, they were convinced that he was there ALL the time, and in some way truly involved—a sense that modern folks should cultivate again... because that presence has not changed, as far as God is concerned! There was an underlying sense that this God of theirs (they were quite sure the only real God) was “BY their side” in any adversity. That is why they called Him Emmanuel – whom Christians and Jews still proclaim to be always with us.

I AM TRYING TO LOCATE SEVERAL PAINTINGS that I had done in the late ‘60s - mid ‘70s. These had been kept at my parents’ house in Queensbury, NY., and were then included by mistake with other family things in an estate sale in Mechanicville, NY in May, 2014. I believe these things were left somewhere in the Mechanicville area. I am still trying to locate my paintings and am hoping that someone may have seen them and could help get them back to me. The painting that would be easiest to remember is that of a red fox sitting in the snow and looking over his shoulder at you. The painting was signed “Warden ‘73”. LEGALS
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a Public Hearing of the Zoning Board of Appeals of the Town of Pittstown, Rensselaer County, New York will be held on February 25, 2025 at 7:00 PM at the Town Hall located at 97 Tomhannock Road, Valley Falls, NY 12185 on an Application by Ken Bornt, 92 Cushman Road, Melrose, NY 12121, TPID# 62.-227, regarding lot line adjustment to property on the eastern side of Cushman Road. This adjustment is to an existing 0.45+/- land locked parcel with a single family dwelling. The adjustment will create a 2.03 acre lot, conforming to current area requirements, with a 30’ wide, 0.09 acre flag staff to provide 30.80 feet of frontage on Cushman Road. The donor lot, TPID# 62.-2-29.2, is 26.4 +/- acres in area, with 61.6 +/- feet of frontage on Cushman Road. Once the adjustments have been made, this lot will be 24.7+/- acres in area with 30.8+/- feet of frontage on Cushman Road. 50 feet of frontage is required for a flag lot, and 200 feet of frontage is required for other lots. The existing lots are non-conforming lots of record, and therefore the Zoning Board of Appeals is able to allow these adjustments by Special Use Permit. Once the Special Use Permit is granted, the Planning Board will process the lot line adjustment. This action is subject to the applicable requirements found in Town of Pittstown ZONING SCHEDULE AND LAND USE REGULATION adopted March 11, 2019.

Whether hunting in the woods, fishing by the water, cruising in his “sharp” cars, or catching the breeze on his motorcycle, Paul found peace in the great outdoors. If he wasn’t home or enjoying the outdoors, you could find him buying his scratchies, betting on the horses with his infamous $20.00 doubles, or visiting a casino, where he was a successful Let It Ride card player with close to 30 four-of-a-kinds. We also can’t forget his love for the New York Giants, the San Francisco Giants, and Duke Basketball. Some other hobbies he enjoyed were crossword puzzles, bowling, shooting pool,
Paul also found immense joy watching and coaching his children, grandchildren, and their friends’ sports. He was their number one fan, always there to cheer them on with pride, knowing that his presence and encouragement meant the world to them. His love for family extended to every game and practice.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his grandchildren, Justin and Dominic. His fur companions, Misty and Callie. His brother Edward, sister in law Sandra. Brother-in-law John Wallace, Nephew Edward Russo.
Paul will be terribly missed by the family he fiercely loved and protected. Survivors, in addition to his loving wife Angela, include his beloved Children Paul (Barb) Cerkowski, Stephen (Rita) Cerkowski, and Susan (Frank) Bolesky, all of Mechanicville. Cheryl (Demetrio) Carbonaro of Troy and Scott (Shannon) Cerkowski of Schuylerville. His cherished Grandchildren Ryan (Rosanne), Joshua (Marissa), Nichole (David), Jessica (William), Stephanie, Alexis (Gavin), Demetrio (Lauren), Dylan, and Devin. As well as 9 Great Grandchildren whom he adored, Rose, Cameron, Roman, Jillian, Weston, Raine, Evelyn, Gio, Bria, and the minions. Sister-in-Law Filomena Wallace, Nieces Deborah (John) Stewart, and Kimberly Russo, and their families. And many cherished cousins and friends.

This beautiful Tuxedo is Tigger’s sister, OREO. We have committed to rescuing both of them at the same time as they were in danger of being abandoned. She is on schedule to become fully vetted, including neutering and all her vaccines, spayed and testing. She is approximately 6 months old and gets along well with others. We would like him to go into another kitty household, if not with her brother Tigger.

WITH ED SKORUPSKI FISHING
Still Fishing
Mother Nature continues to favor us Ice Anglers with more normal winter weather. I can’t say there’s safe ice everywhere, because there isn’t – big lakes like Lake George and Great Sacandaga still have open water and there are still some thin spots on Saratoga, but there is lotsa safe ice. Off Fitch the ice is close to 20” - 200 yds out but thins quickly to 10” as you get farther out. So, if you are going out – be sure of where you’re going or stay where others are fishing.
After my success on Tim’s spot, I’ve had, from the standpoint of catching, two good trips and two poor trips – but remember, catching isn’t the only goal – getting out for some fresh air and thinking time is just as, if not more important.
I’m still contemplating why hotdogs come in 10-packs and buns in 8-packs, why people can’t park between the lines at Price Chopper and why if you’re afraid of driving in the snow, you’re out driving when it’s snowing.
I was wondering why I was feeling the cold more than I used too – my Dr. subtly hinted that it might be “Old Age” – I’m still trying to rationalize that, but he’s kept me upright for the last 15 years, so I must lend some credence to his opinion, despite a desperate need to refuse
acknowledging I’m getting older and slower – and more susceptible to the cold.
Last Wednesday, I added 10 fish to the larder, several of which were turned into fish cakes that
evening. I would have caught more, but a bass took my last “lucky” jig, and try as I might, the fish just did not like the alternatives offered.
That precipitated a trip to Wiggly Worm on Rte. 50 in Ballston Lake, an unpretentious building from the outside, but a wonder inside – if you can’t find it here, you don’t need it. I bought a handful of jigs and a set of auger blades for less than on Amazon!
wayward bullhead. Unwilling to call-it, I went prospecting, drilling 10 more holes in various places, but added nothing to the pot.
By 11, I admitted defeat and went home knowing that I’d been outsmarted by a critter with a brain the size of a pea and not feeling too good about it. But I’m not giving up.
Tuesday afternoon was a little different story – the conditions were good, getting on the lake was no issue despite 6” of new snow. I’m not sure what was up with my GPS, but it had me going in circles, but after 15 minutes of moving 3 feet south - drill a hole, 12 feet northwest – drill a hole, … I finally settled in on a spot with 6 ½ feet of nearly weedless water and set. My jig hadn’t even reached the bottom when it got hammered! Turned out to be a 9 ½” bluegill – Bingo! I sat on that spot till dusk, finishing with 9 very nice plump bluegills for the pantry.
Reequipped, I got up early Saturday and was on the ice by 7AM, 25F a lite SW breeze and an approaching storm, perfect conditions for ice fishing. After cutting 3-4 holes, I set-up ready for the morning rush.
Unfortunately, no one told the fish the weather was perfect, and I was waiting. After 3 hours, my total was 1 - 9” bluegill, 1 – 10” bass and a
With Tuesday’s success – why not go Wednesday – so I did – found the hole I sat on Tuesday, cleared it out and dropped down my jig –immediately felt the “tug, tug” of a bite, set the hook and Viola! a nice 9” bluegill – Yes!
And that was the last fish I landed – another day of fishless fresh air. Not matter your experience or skill, or $1000’s in Hi-tech gear, you can’t make ‘em bite if they’re not hungry!
Think I’ll take a few days off.
In the “What the Heck?” social commentary column – I stopped over at Smitty’s to get some spikes last week and he had to unlock the refrigerator where they were kept, because people were stealing them – in my opinion, if you can’t afford the $4 for a puck of spikes, maybe you should be working a 2nd job instead of going fishing – stealing fly larvae is pretty low.
And that’s it for this week!
