time the popularity of the event and the meaning behind it has taken a foothold in the community. The display has grown to 125 individual trees with an active waiting list. For the community it marks the start of the holiday season. It serves to offer a source of peace and comfort, honoring the cherished memories of lost loved ones during what is often a difficult time of year for families.

This year the ceremony was held on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 4:30 pm at the Schaghticoke Town Hall. The ceremony began with a welcome and opening remarks by Jacki Kinnicutt-Sawyer, chairperson. She offered words of appreciation for the hard work of the committee and volunteers this year, along with a special thanks to John Bartis for taking care of all the details throughout the season. Following the opening remarks, local talent, Hannah Coffin performed holiday vocal selections. Trista Bugbee offered the reading of her original poetry, “Snow Globe of Memories.” Jackie Kinnicutt-Sawyer read each of the special dedications from each individual memorial tree and the community tree.

Upon the conclusion of the ceremony, John Bartis, thanked the community for their ongoing support for this event. At the end of the memorial service all the trees in the Radiant Peace Memorial Tree display were lit simultaneously. ▶

the evening. A fireworks display concluded the ceremony.

Each year the individual trees that makes up this powerful memorial display tell the unique story about the person or families it memorializes. Together, these trees radiate a powerful message of comfort, peace and light. Throughout the holiday season this display of brightly-lit memorial trees offers a powerful remembrance of “those who can’t be with us this holiday season.” It also symbolizes the strength and spirit of the community that supports this event every year.

The Radiant Peace Memorial Tree Display will remain lit through January 1, 2026. The community tree in the gazebo offers the chance for anyone to add a personalized ornament to its branches at any time. Everyone is welcome to stop anytime. Families are encouraged to attend to the upkeep of their tree throughout the length of the display.

The committee hopes that again this year, “the radiance of these trees bring you peace this holiday season.”

Christmas Letter To Santa

Dear Editor, Christmas season is upon us. Gift giving is on our minds. Which reminds us of the saying, “It is not the gift but the thought that counts.” Really, well I think someone made that saying up just to cop out of gift giving without any thought. It’s sort of like saying, “I didn’t forget you but I really didn’t have time to give you any thing but this cheap little trinket” I read somewhere that people who think good thoughts give good gifts. This should be the Golden Rule of Gift Exchange! So what do I wish for Christmas?

Dear Santa,

For a good long time, gadgets and shining

Tobjects may have brought a smile. But as I’ve grown older, I am in my 80s, they have less and less meaning in my life. It is delight and simplicity that becomes more appealing. So searching through my library of books I came upon this which I want to share with you as a Christmas gift.

I really, really, really want for Christmas is just this:

I want to be five years old again for an hour.

I want to laugh a lot and cry a lot. I want to be picked up and rocked to sleep in someone’s arms, and carried up to bed just one more time.

I know what I really want for Christmas.

I want my childhood back.

Nobody is going to give me that. I might give at least the memory of it to myself if I try. I know it does not

OINGREDIENTS

Dry-Small bowl

• 3 c flour

• 2 1/2 tsp baking powder

• 3/4 tsp salt

Wet-Large bowl

• 1 c sugar

• 3 eggs

• 1/2 c milk

• Also 1 c Crisco shortening, 8 tsp Anise extract, split and 1 lb. confectioners sugar

DIRECTIONS

• Melt and cool 1 c Crisco shortening. Add it to wet ingredients with a mixer and add 6 tsp pure anise extract. Then slowly, add in the dry ingredients to the batter. Refrigerate for about a half hour or so… makes it easier to roll.

• May have to add some flour, if dough is sticky. Roll into small balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

• Bake at 340-350 degrees (I do 340) for about 9-10 minutes (I do 6, switch racks and 3 more). Note---after many years, I found these times and degrees are the best!

• This is for a single batch which will make 5-6 dozen cookies, depending how big the balls are. I always do a double batch, but separately… works better!

• Make icing with 1 lb confectioners sugar and 2 tsp Anise with some added water to get a good consistency. When cookies are cooled, dip and sprinkle with jimmies!

Holiday Train Brings a Gift

Mechanicville, November 25

At least a thousand people braved the rain on a cold night to greet the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train. People gathered in the Elks parking lot and across the train tracks to welcome the Holiday Train. The Canadian Pacific came bearing gifts. A check of $3500 was donated to The Mechanicville Area Community Services Center. People were gathered on each side of the railroad tracks by the Elks, to listen to holiday music before the train had to continue its journey.

This is the 27th Anniversary of the Holiday Train. Since 1999 the Holiday Train has donated over $22.5 million dollars and 6 million lbs. of food to foodbanks.

Heartfelt Thank You for a Successful 2nd Annual All-American Holiday Parade

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped make this year’s 2nd Annual All-American Holiday Parade such a wonderful success.

Thank you to all of our parade participants whose enthusiasm and creativity brought energy and excitement to every block. A special thankyou to our police and fire departments for expertly managing traffic and keeping our community safe throughout the event.

We are grateful to our residents for keeping the streets clear of parked cars, allowing the parade to flow smoothly—your cooperation made a world of difference.

A huge thank-you to Larry Grayson and The Endzone for announcing the parade lineup and keeping Park Avenue hopping; the scene was truly magical, like something out of a movie.

Our appreciation also goes to Mike Rubino for livestreaming the parade so that those who couldn’t attend in person were still able to enjoy the celebration from home.

We were blown away with the performance from MaryAnn fortune’s dance studio, they did not disappoint.

A very special thank-you to Nick Noyes for his amazing rendition of the National Anthem—his performance gave us chills and set the perfect tone for the night.

Thank you to Country Living for generously donating food and drinks for our parade participants, keeping everyone fed, warm, and ready to celebrate. Thank you Marc Bailey for donating his time and equipment for our opening ceremony, and Graig Johnson for donating the tents.

We also thank the many individuals, businesses, and organizations that generously donated to help make this night possible.

And most importantly, we thank our veterans— whether you marched with us or watched from the sidelines. We hope the parade brought you joy. It is only a small token of our deep appreciation for your service, sacrifice, and love of country.

Thank you, everyone, for helping create a day filled with community, pride, and holiday spirit. We can’t wait to see you again next year.

RRPI and Globalfoundries Partner on Semiconductor Research

ensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and GlobalFoundries have announced a new partnership which will focus on collaborating on semiconductor research, education, talent, and workforce development.

Semiconductor-related curriculum courses will be further developed • GLOBAL continues on page 12 •

at RPI. These courses will continue to be led by industry experts from Globalfoundries and will include additional field trips to Gloubalfoundries Fab 8 plant in Malta. Currently, nearly 200 students have shown an interest in semiconductor manufacturing. This new partnership will also include educational opportunities for RPI students, support for RPI faculty, STEM outreach, and joint research/development programs

“RPI has a long history of research and education in semiconductors and microelectronics,” said RPI President Martin Schmidt in a company release. “Formalizing a strategic partnership with GlobalFoundries allows RPI faculty, students, and researchers to collaborate with one of the world’s most innovative and technologically advanced companies that will benefit society and foster economic development in New York State, across the country, and globally.”

Over 150 RPI alumni currently work at Globalfoundries, and each year several RPI students are hired for internships and full-time roles at the company. RPI also recently opened a 6,000 square-foot facility at NY Creates’ Albany

NanoTech Complex, where Globalfoundries continues to “maintain a significant presence.”

This agreement also continues to build on an ongoing collaboration between the two institutions. Globalfoundries recently endowed two Dean’s Faculty Fellows in the School of Engineering, which recognizes mid-career faculty working in the areas of mutual interest in chips and semiconductors. Globalfoundries has also supported RPI students with a strong interest in the semiconductor industry through the Community College Scholars Program.

For RPI, the relationship will be managed by the Office of Strategic Alliances and Translation (OSAT), RPI’s new portfolio for industry partnerships and research translation.

“GlobalFoundries is at the forefront of essential innovation, and this new partnership with RPI strengthens our ability to deliver semiconductor technologies and shape the future of microelectronics,” said Globalfoundries senior vice president of technology Dr. Ted Letavic. “By combining RPI’s research and education with Globalfoundries’ industry expertise, we

are creating opportunities that will accelerate technology development.”

The strategic partnership also incorporates Globalfoundries’ into RPI’s Industry Engagement Program (IEP). The IEP is defined as a “strategic initiative to foster partnerships with companies for research, education, and workforce development.”

This relationship further allows both partners to continue their current collaborations while expanding the partnership into areas such as joint faculty/engineering exchanges.

Founded in 1824, RPI is the first technological research university in the United States. Today, it is recognized as a premier university, noted for holistic learning community in science and technology. According to Globalfoundries’ website, RPI is “dedicated to inventing for the future, from shaping the scientists, engineers, technologists, architects, financiers, managers, and entrepreneurs who will define what’s next for humanity, to research that bridges disciplines to solve the world’s toughest problems.”

Jacklyn Wagner Wins Local Competition in Lions International Peace Poster Contest

Jacklyn Wagner, a student at Stillwater Middle School, has taken the first step to become an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Mechanicville-Stillwater Lions Club.

Wagner’s poster was among more than 600,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

The poster was selected by the MechanicvilleStillwater Lions Club for its originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme, “Together As One.”

Mechanicville-Stillwater Lions Club President Michael Connors said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Stillwater Middle School. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”

Connors also praised Past President Scott Oliver, whose hard work in organizing this contest was essential. “His dedication made this event a success and ensured these young artists had the platform to share their vision of peace.”

Wagner’s poster will advance through the district, multiple district, and international levels of competition if she is to be declared the international grand prize winner.

One international grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000 and will be recognized at a special Lions International awards ceremony. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.

“Our club is cheering for Jacklyn as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” Connors said.

Locally, the Mechanicville-Stillwater Lions Club honored Wagner and two other students, Audrey Bartis and Aubrey Trudeau, for their participation. Wagner was awarded $50, and Bartis and Trudeau each received $25.

1775: The First Year of Revolution – Leadership

This is the third in a series of articles highlighting the 250th anniversary of the real beginning of the American Revolution in upstate New York and specifically Albany County, which in 1775 stretched from Kingston north to Lake George.

When the Albany Committee of Correspondence met officially for the first time on January 24, 1775 in support of the Continental Congress’ measures against the Coercive Acts of the British Parliament, two often overlooked aspects of the formation of that committee began to emerge. First, this committee was decidedly extralegal. Governmental authority was vested in the City’s Common Council established under a municipal charter issued by Governor Thomas Dongan almost 90 years earlier. The mayor,

recorder, sheriff and the clerk were appointed by the governor of the colony. Aldermen were elected annually, most often from among the prominent Dutch families of the City.

The Committee of Correspondence had no standing to take actions that could be deemed traitorous. They were treading on dangerous ground. Early meetings were held in inns and private homes. The first gathering was held at the tavern of Richard Cartwright who ironically would later be outed as a Loyalist and banished from Albany. Only when the outbreak of war tipped the power balance from the City Council to the Committee where they emboldened to meet at City Hall.

• 1775 continues on page 14 •

• 1775 continued from page 13 •

Secondly, the native language of most of those assembled was Dutch and their conversations may have reflected their ethnic origin. The initial patriot leadership in the City of Albany and much of the surrounding county was culturally distinct from the New Englanders who were at the point of the spear of the rebellion. The American Revolution was not just a revolt of Puritan merchants and farmers joining with Virginian aristocrats to achieve independence. The real history of the Revolution is much more granular and complex. Albany County’s unique ethnic mix would have an impact on local events throughout the war.

So who led these Albany patriots? One of the first acts of the Committee was to appoint a chairman. They unanimously selected Abraham Yates, Jr. Yates had risen from a working-class family of mixed heritage to become a lawyer and Albany County Sherrif during the French and Indian War. His experience dealing with the British military made him an early advocate for the rights of citizens and propelled him into politics, where he served on the Common Council for 20 years. Yates came an outspoken opponent of British actions, from the 1765 Stamp Act to the recent 1774 Coercive Acts. He was the obvious choice to lead the Albany Patriots as his later career confirmed. After serving 4 months leading the Albany Committee, he was chosen to serve on the New York Provincial Congress and was instrumental in drafting the State Constitution in 1777. Yates later served as State Senator and

ended his career as Mayor of Albany from 1790 to his death in 1796.

One of the first actions of the January meeting was to approve the November resolves of the “former” Committee, which apparently had met in secret to implement the decisions of the First Continental Congress. By January this new committee was becoming bolder but still unsure of the extent of its authority. Consumed with their own affairs, outlying districts were slow to form their own committees as directed by the leadership, and few men outside of Albany attended the early County Committee’s sessions.

Five weeks after that first meeting the Committee received a letter from Assemblyman Phillip Schuyler indicating that the British controlled Colonial Assembly would not consider appointing delegates to the upcoming 2nd Continental Congress planning to convene in Philadelphia, and he urged the Committee to take the initiative. While supportive of the request, the committee was not willing to proceed on their own authority without the support of their District Committees. These outlying districts were called to Albany on March 21 but only a few responded, including – for the first time – representatives from Halfmoon and Saratoga. They appointed five members to the New York Provincial Congress, to select the delegates to the Continental Congress. The local supporters of Independence recognized that it was important to work closely with both local citizens and Colony-wide leaders for the movement to succeed. That effort was off to a slow start.

Events in the next few weeks gave the Committee a new perspective of the scope and urgency of their responsibilities and awakened the broader population to the reality of the coming

conflict. On April 26th the Committee received word of the raid on Lexington and Concord and immediately reached out to the delinquent districts informing them that

The late troubles in the Massachusetts Bay, renders a meeting of the Committee of Correspondence necessary, which is appointed to be held at the House of Richard Cartwright on Wednesday the 10th day of May next, and as your District have not lately associated by Committees we conceive this step necessary.

The actual outbreak of the war galvanized support for the Patriot cause. At the May 10 meeting committee members attended representing Rensselaer Manor, Livingston Manor, Schenectady, Saratoga, Halfmoon, Schagtekoeke, Hoosic, Cambridge, Bennington and several other districts. In all 110 men became District Committeemen that day, officially joining the American cause.

They joined a strong and growing Albany City Committee well stocked with prominent citizens with leadership skills. Included were a previous mayor (Volkert P. Douw), the current Mayor (Abraham Cuyler) and two future Mayors (Abraham Ten Broeck and Abraham Yates). Several others went on to serve in the New York Provincial Congress, the Continental Congress and one, Robert Yates, would be a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

The Albany County Committee’s abilities would soon be tested. On the same day this assemblage of patriots gathered at Albany City Hall, 100 miles to the north two New Englanders, Green Mountain Boys leader Ethan Allen and Colonel Benedict Arnold, a merchant-mariner from Connecticut, captured the British fortress at Ticonderoga. But could they keep it?

The Valley Falls Library Art Matters Wall

Features Local Artists Ken and Brunhilde Miller

Ken and Brunhilde Miller are the featured artists on the Valley Falls Free Library Art Matters Wall. The Art Matters wall was designed to showcase the unique work of local artists. The work of the Millers will be displayed at the library through November and December 2025.

Ken specializes in wood art using all types of hardwood. Brunhilde specializes in fabrics quilting and creating various sown items. She enjoys sewing and making items from fabrics. She gets inspired by pieces of fabric and putting them together in various ways. Many of their collaborative pieces have come from their combined vision coupled by their unique talents which come to life through their artwork. While they each have their own unique interests and skill sets, they often combine their talents to collaborate on many of the pieces they showcase. Ken and Brunhilde have resided in Valley Falls since 1997. They were originally from Chicago and met in college in Iowa. They both enjoyed working on their craft and when they retired it

became something they did more often. Ken earned a PHD in Chemistry and Brunhilde a MS in Food and Nutrition. I enjoy learning and doing, says Ken, as does my wife. They both share a love of arts, crafts and creating things. Brunhildes family had a farm in Maryland which is where Ken found access to and learned about the various hardwoods that he uses to make his art. It was on the farm they also learned about and acquired some of the machines that help them craft their art pieces. “We have a million ideas,” says Ken. Ken has been working with wood since about 1966.

It seems that both Ken and Brunhilde were born to be artists. My dad was very creative says Ken, while not a craftsman per say, he was very handy and could always solve a problem. Brunis family and their work on the farm lended them to having to solve problems, fix things and be creative with their resources. While Ken started small by turning wooden fruit using a lathe, they later began making furniture and other items. Their craft grew from there. The Millers resided for a bit in Troy and it was there they began making furniture. He taught his children the trade. Creating and building things was a natural course for us as a family, says Ken. To this day both of my children are still deeply involved in their craft.

The Millers property in Valley Falls consists of 18 acres so there is no shortage of material to work with, says Ken. He has a shop on his property that houses the tools and machines he uses to create his art. Both artists are self-taught and gain inspiration from the resources they have around them every day. My work is very natural he says. Ken does wood sculptures made from many different types of hardwood. The best woods

are walnut oak maple and cherry because of the colors. Ken says, I generally don’t stain anything. The nice thing about using natural wood is that you can also repair it easily. Sometimes people will give me wood that they think I can use. Often, I just go out in the woods and if I see something I pick it up. I get ideas seeing the patterns in nature. While some of his work is refined some remain natural. Many of the things I have made are special because I can never reproduce them, rather they are inspired by the designs in nature.

Ken was involved with the Northeastern Woodworkers Association which naturally involved him with other organizations and woodworkers. Ken has volunteered his time and talent at various locations over the years. When people know you have certain skills it lends you to getting involved in different projects he notes. It is rewarding and fun to work with people that want to do things for reasons other than monetary, he notes.

In addition to creating new art, Ken also does carpentry and repair and restoration work on old wood structures. He has built all the doors in his home as well as done some restoration work at various locations in Troy and at the Shaker Meeting in Albany. He also restored the old opera house door at the Valley Artisans Market where he also displays and sells his work.

The Millers love what they do. “We do not want to be business people. It is not about money,” says Ken, we just enjoy doing things. They test the waters and see what type of art people like and design from there, says Ken. I still have so many projects in the works that I want to finish, says Ken. The Miller’s work is for sale when it is on display. They also participate in local craft fairs in the area. It is always rewarding to see what people like and their reaction to my pieces, he says.

The Valley Falls Library offers many great things says Ken. Bruni did a show here a few years ago so they decided to reach out to get involved in the Art Matters display. As a thank you to the library Ken designed a reinforcement display for the Art Matters Wall. This new addition to the Art Matters Wall currently displays some of Ken’s designs and will be there for future artisans. He was happy to make this contribution to the library.

The Millers have their work for sale and on display regularly at the Valley Artisans Market in Cambridge. Their work is also on display at the Valley Falls Library through the end of December during regular library hours. More information on the Art Matters Wall and library programming can be obtained by visiting the library website at www. valleyfallslibrary.org

Brothers Helping Brothers to Support Others

The brothers that make up the Victor Lodge #680 F&A.M in Schaghticoke are always ready to support their community.

“Our hearts are large,” says Lloyd Dean, lodge member. When they are asked for assistance of time, talent or money or in the instance of an emergency, they always pull it off. Being a small lodge, resources are limited so this restricts how much we can give to the community for assistance, he notes. Their efforts and dedication to putting on fundraisers that not only support the operations of the lodge but

enable the brothers to support the needs of the community are top notch. Their unwavering dedication and efforts to support area events and causes and assist those in need is a cornerstone of Masonry. This value is alive is carried out regularly in the work that is done by the brothers at Victor Lodge #680.

Victor Lodge #680 has always been a part of community events. Most recently they have supported the efforts of the Community Life Support, and the Schaghticoke Food Pantry. They have raised money for Schriners Hospital, and the MS/ALS foundation as well as supported the initiatives of other local lodges. These are just a few of their recent involvements. Their efforts to support each other and their community are just one of the many values shared by Masons. These efforts by the brothers at Victor Lodge #680 in Schaghticoke were recently recognized

250 Years Ago: A Very Important Schaghticoke Resident: Jacob Abraham Lansing, Jr.

Over the past weeks, I have written about men who served in our local militia regiment, or as our representatives to the Albany Committee of Correspondence, our government from 17751777. I am embarrassed to say that I had never researched this man before, as he was arguably more important that even John Knickerbocker Sr. and Jr. I knew his name, but not until I found his probate file and the inventory of his estate when he died without a will, that his importance really became evident.

Jacob (1751-1801) was the son of Abraham Jacob Lansing, the founder of Lansingburgh and Catherine Leversee. I think he was born as Abraham Jacob, Jr., but was known as Jacob, Jr., to differentiate himself from his father. He married Alida Leversee (1749-1822) around 1773. They had five children baptized in the Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church- two Abrahams, one in 1774 and one in 1779; Cattrina, 1781, and two

with a donation.

St. George’s Lodge #6 from Schenectady has been watching the efforts and involvement of Victor Lodge #680 in Schaghticoke. On Tuesday November 25th lodge members W: Eddie Mosso and R:W: Paul Hulseapple, representing St. George’s Lodge presented Victor Lodge #680 with a donation to assist with their efforts to help those in our community in their time of need.

The brothers of Victor Lodge #680, would like to thank W: Ed, R:W: Paul and the brothers of St George’s Lodge for their generosity. This gift will ensure that the brothers are able to continue their mission of service to others. Brotherly love is alive and well in Masonry, especially in the Old 17th Masonic District. Brother helping brother, lodge helping lodge and masons helping others during their time of need. “I am proud to be a part of this fraternal organization,” says Dean.

William Leversees, one in 1784 and the other in 1792. Brother Abraham Lansing and his wife Cattrina Leversee were the sponsors of the first three.

Jacob was referred to as being “from Stone Arabia” in many documents. This was the patent that covered the southern part of the town of Schaghticoke, from Calhoun Drive to Troy. His father purchased some of that land along with all that became modern Lansingburgh in 1771. He divided the southern section into lots to be sold and rented, forming Lansingburgh or “New City”. While his father lived on modern Second Avenue within his Lansingburgh, Jacob lived within the boundaries of Schaghticoke. His home is still standing at the junction of Haughney, Marion, and Tampa Streets in Pleasantdale. After the death of his grandson, Edward, that farm was subdivided into the hamlet, c. 1915.

On May 22, 1775, fifty residents of the very new Lansingburgh signed a declaration stating they would follow the Continental Congress in opposing British tyranny. Father Abraham Lansing was the first signer, Jacob the last. This was a very early commitment to the “Cause,” only one month after Lexington and Concord.

Jacob was one of the first representatives from the Schaghticoke District to the Albany Committee of Correspondence. He was the most frequent participant from the district in the Committee from fall 1775 on, staying in the city of Albany for a week or so at a time. In 1778, he stopped attending the meetings of the Committee, presumably because he became the second Colonel of the 1st Albany County Militia, taking over from Abraham Cuyler. This was a small regiment, heavy on officers- with seven Captains, eleven Lieutenants, five Ensigns, and just forty Privates.

In the US Compiled Revolutionary War Military Service Records, a data set on ancestry. com, Jacob submitted pay receipts for service in the First Albany County regiment from November 11-21, 1778 and October 26-November 6, 1779. Both stated that his regiment was called out to “repel the incursion of Enemy at Schoharry and Stone Arabia.” His regiment also sent a company to escort prisoners to Esopus “by order of the Committee of Albany” in September 1777. Yet he did not lose his connection with the local 14th Albany County Militia. In 1782, he was the head of a class of 26 men who were to equip one of their number to serve with Colonel Peter Yates at the barracks at Saratoga.

Next week---more about Jacob Lansing.

On Giving a Poetry Reading

If only my Dad were here today.

Together we hiked in springtime woods,

But it wasn’t just about trillium and jack-in-the-pulpit.

Together we went ice fishing on a school day,

But it wasn’t just about worms and wall-eyed pike.

Together we built a bird feeder,

But it wasn’t just about chickadees and blue jays.

Together we picnicked ‘neath Rexleigh Bridge,

But it wasn’t just about peanut butter sandwiches and eddies in the Battenkill.

Together we rowed to the end of Hedges Lake,

But it wasn’t just about lily pads and sunning turtles.

If my Dad were here today, would he hear my voice?

Would he hear the woods, the ice-covered lake, the chirping birds,

The weathered old bridge span,

The creaky oars?

Would he hear his voice?

HONEY: Plott Hound/ Great Dane Mix, ~1.5 years, Female, 58 pounds. Traits: Gentle, shy, dog-social, wellleash trained, working on crate training. She’s a little shy, but she’s beginning to come out of her shell. Honey has done well around younger children and cats during short visits and enjoys the company of other dogs. She is well leash-trained, uses a doggie door, and is currently working on crate training to help counteract her silly love of chewing. Her perfect home would include canine companions to help her feel comfortable, confident, and supported. Looney Tunes has only known one owner- her 96 year old mom who unfortunately had to change living situations that would not allow her to bring her kitty. She is obviously confused and is decompressing in her foster home. She is sweet and purrs when she is with her foster mom. She needs a quiet home with no other pets or young children. She is also an expert at following her person from room to room, so you will always have a buddy with you. She is 8 years old, up to date on her vaccines and is microchipped.

A homemaker most of her life, Benita also worked as a cleaner for various local businesses including the church rectory and Joyce’s Log Cabin. She could be seen on any given day, peacefully sitting on her beloved William Street porch, reading a book or chatting with neighbors. She enjoyed embroidery work, baking, cooking, and especially scratch offs. In the early 80’s, she joined the Assumption-St. Paul parish RCIA program, which she completed, strengthening her faith in God. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Dominick, in 2019.

Vincent John “Jim” LaVigna Jr. - 80

(October 22, 1944 — August 4, 2025)

Vincent John LaVigna Jr., “Jim” a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud U.S. Army veteran, passed away peacefully at Halifax Health, ICU on August 4, 2025, at the age of 80. Born in Troy, New York October 22, 1944, Vincent was raised in the tight-knit community of Mechanicville, where he quickly stood out for both his athleticism and intellect. A gifted student with a sharp mind for mathematics, he balanced the classroom with the football field and basketball court before going on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Siena College, Loudonville, NY.

In 1967, Vincent was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He served as a food inspector and was Honorably Discharged as a SP5 (E5) after two years of service. Upon returning home a few years later, fate introduced him to Phyllis Benacquisto of Schenectady, NY, after a night at the Saratoga Harness track and Joe Collins Bar. Their first date took place at Hoffman’s Playland, accompanied by Phyllis’ young daughter, Michele, and her nephew, Keith. They married in November 1971, and Vincent proudly adopted Michele as his own.

In the years that followed, Vincent and Phyllis welcomed two sons: Michael in 1972 and Matthew in 1974. He provided for his family with unwavering commitment, working for General Electric in Waterford, New York. His financial role with GE then took the family to Milan, Italy in 1977. After three enriching years abroad, the LaVigna’s relocated to Damascus, Maryland and eventually made their home in Coral Springs, Florida.

Vincent’s career spanned several prominent corporations, and he also pursued a variety of entrepreneurial ventures. In 1994, he and Phyllis moved to Daytona Beach, where Vincent later began his longstanding service with the Diocese of Orlando, Florida. For 25 years, Vince diligently managed operations at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Port Orange, Florida. Retiring in 2022, Vince devoted his time and energy to supporting Phyllis’ mental health agency, Counseling & Disability Services, LLC.

Vincent was the steady heart of his family; wise, kind, and unwavering in his love and support. He was a man of quiet strength, quick wit, and deep loyalty. Whether offering advice,

in the Light of The Lord!”

Those words heard in many churches this week is one of the few passages found in two books of the Bible, in Isaiah 2:5 and in Micah 4:1-3.) Scholars mostly understand it as a short creed reflecting the official faith of the Jerusalem Temple. It contains the themes of God’s choice of Zion as his home, the destruction

of weapons of war, the establishment of a reign of peace, the value of pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and recognition of its importance by the nations. Those themes are also present in the so-called Zion Psalms 46-48, 76, 87, and 122.

They look ahead to a new day when Jew and Gentile shall both learn Torah and worship the God of Israel. Thus it is fitting that it was as chosen the opening reading of the entire Liturgical Year in this Year A of the 3-year cycle of readings ecumenically chosen by several Christian bodies. Some further thoughts if I may. It happens all too often in today’s world that the human conscience becomes elastic and nonreflective. But as the liturgical year begins, the words we hear in church, or we read in private devotion, highlight the importance of awareness -- of real alertness.

In Matthew 24:37-44, the contemporaries of Noah are seen as totally unprepared for the impending disaster. Since we too do not know when the end will come, the only message that counts here is: “Stay awake!” Or to paraphrase St. Paul, it is no time to be asleep, but rather be on our feet.

They were written amid a prevalent belief of the imminent return of Christ. That expectation receded with the passage of time. The Second Coming (often referred to as imminent, even by groups in our time) actually means that, when all is said and done, God will have the final word. In the meantime, we are called to be alert – and ready.

Yet over time, regardless of the twists and turns that history may take, we have placed too much emphasis on the Second Coming as a determined moment -- and failed to recognize the many ways in which Christ’s return is already present.

There are many unforeseen events in history, both glorious and tragic, that touch upon our relationship to God. They have their own message. But are we awake? Are we alert?

God’s Word today may be heard in church, mosque or synagogue. But who is listening? Isaiah speaks a message of peace in a time when weapons of war will become agricultural tools. Could any message be more relevant – with our constant buildup of armaments in the presence of countless faces of starving children?

“Be alert! Be awake!” Yes… Do we hear the messages -- like Paul’s -- for disarmament, or do we consider them simply the mottoes of an “enlightened” fringe group?

Yet... What about the price of real respect for human rights, the building of a new economic order, or an end to the taking of human life in any form? These are – they are all – reign of God issues.

And so we hear in churches today “The night has passed the day is at hand, let us put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”
