Adam Myott is in his third year in his role as Director of the play production. He partnered with Producer Adrienne Sherman, Music Director, Emily Morizio and Choreographer, Melanie Natter to bring to life through music and dance the story of Kansas girl Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto. The talent of the cast, the colorful props and the musical arrangements, vividly painted the picture of the storyline of the adventures of Dorothy and Toto. The pair are swept away from their Kansas home by a tornado where they arrive in the magical Land of Oz. Following the yellow brick road, Dorothy and Toto meet three new friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Trying to avoid crossing the path of the wicked witch they follow the yellow brick road to meet the Great Oz who they hope will grant them all their wishes. The energy and effort that went into every scene held the attention of the audiences of all ages throughout the performance.

RYAN MAHAN FOR SHERIFF

Today, I am proud to announce my candidacy for Sheriff of Saratoga County. Change is overdue. For 50 years, leadership has come from outside the uniformed ranks—yet it’s the men and women on the front lines who understand this job and our communities best. We are the ones answering calls, building relationships, and facing the challenges of law enforcement and public safety every day. Leadership isn’t about politics or rank—it’s

about trust, experience, and action. Throughout my career, I have led from the front, working side by side with the deputies who protect Saratoga County. I believe that by restoring trust, strengthening relationships, and prioritizing community, we can build a safer, stronger, and more united Saratoga County.

I began my career as a corrections offcer, an experience that gave me a deep respect for every level of law enforcement. I later transitioned to road patrol, where I have served for 21 years and currently hold the rank of sergeant.

I have led the Saratoga County Deputy Sheriffs PBA, fghting for better working conditions, resources, and support for the deputies who put their lives on the line. Open communication between leadership and those on the ground is critical to fxing problems, and I have worked hard to bridge that gap. My experience has also allowed me to build strong relationships with community members, local leaders, and law enforcement agencies across the state.

PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT

Serving both the community and my fellow offcers has always been my priority. Eight years ago, I founded Saratoga County’s frst youth cadet program to mentor and inspire young people considering careers in law enforcement. Many have gone on to serve in law enforcement and the military, and I am proud to have played a role in their journey. I also helped establish the school resource offcer program and personally served as an SRO for fve years— building trust with students, ensuring school safety, and showing young people that law enforcement is here to serve, protect, and mentor.

For the past decade,

Most importantly, I have learned that public safety is not a partisan issue. Fairness, accountability, and the law must come frst. That’s why I made the decision to run as a Republican and seek the democratic endorsement—not for politics, but to demonstrate that leadership means putting people over party lines. The Sheriff’s Offce must serve all residents, enforce the law equally, and remain above partisan agendas. We must listen to both sides, fnd commonalities, and work together.

Saratoga County isn’t just where I work— it’s my home. My wife and I are proud to call Saratoga County our home as we raise our family and are active members of our community. Whether volunteering, fundraising, or taking the time to coach four different youth sports across Malta, Clifton Park, and Halfmoon, giving back has been a way of life for us. These experiences have helped me connect with people from all walks of life and truly understand the concerns of our neighbors.

The time for change is now. Saratoga County deserves a Sheriff who leads by example, listens to the people, and supports the men and women who serve. Together, we will build a stronger, safer Saratoga County for everyone.

Statewide Shortage Rock Salt Hits Home

The statewide road salt shortage is affecting the area. At the Town Meeting of Stillwater on February 6th, Highway Supervisor Bill Doughty said the town is nearly out of road salt. He said the storm of February 8-9 would deplete supplies. For more details go to the Stillwater page in this issue.

Town of Halfmoon Highway Supervisor Bill Bryans said supplies in Halfmoon good. He cautioned delivery of more salt is unknown. Until the situation is resolved the town will not allow anyone to take salt from its stock.

Mechanicville Mayor Mike Butler said the city received 4 loads the previous week so reserves are good for the time being.

Lack of Road Salt in Stillwater

Stillwater, February 6

tillwater Superintendent of Highways Bill Doughty, announced at the Town Council meeting the town is nearly out of road salt.

There is a salt shortage and the Town is making all efforts to obtain more. He said the Town has only 100 tons in storage and that will be used in the wake of last weekend’s storm.

The Highway Department has already used 1700 tons of salt, 500 more tons than the entire winter of last year. The Highway Department will need much more salt to get through the winter.

Water rates will increase by 10% and Sewer rates will remain unchanged.

Supervisor Kinowski announced the town needs an increase in its water supply due to the growing populations. He will contact Saratoga County to increase the daily supply from 250,000 to 350,000 gallons per day. This will not affect residents of the Village of Stillwater who have their own water supply. Nor does it have any effect on those residents who obtain water from private companies or who have dug wells.

To facilitate the water usage increase a resolution was passed to authorize LaBella Associates to develop a water system and mapping model. This Water Supply Request Program will study water usage and needs to project further water needs. Kinowski explained water usage varies based on number of residents per home, demographics, etc. The cost for the study is $9,950.

Photography at Stillwater Library

The Stillwater Public Library thanks Jeremy Cunningham for his beautiful photography display in the library for 2024. New year, new images! For 2025 we are proud to host the photography of Allison Buchanan.

“I’ve loved taking pictures since I took my frst photography class in high school. When I was little my mom took a photography course at the local community college and my favorite image is of me and my Raggedy Anne doll in black and white, the images of my cousin taken in her prom dress with no head or no feet, or just the middle of the dress haphazardly drove my passion for the details. I’m sure my grandmother was ahead of the times and just didn’t execute her vision to my liking,” says Allison of her grandmother Jean (Moore) Wilson.

Allison (Yetto) Buchanan was a Stillwater resident for most of her childhood, graduating with the class of 1997. She currently resides in Colorado with her husband, Eric, and children Tanner, Lainey, and Barrett. Stop in to see her amazing photos and see if you can guess what the images are! According to the National Fire Protection Association, home heating equipment is a leading cause of home fres during the winter months, with half occurring during the months of December, January and February. These fres may be caused by creosote buildup, failing to give space heaters enough space and/or improper installation. Obviously, these fres can be costly and pose severe safety concerns.

Schaghticoke in the 1940’s:

The bit of Valley Falls in Schaghticoke and…

Moving on to the Village of Schaghticoke

by Chris Kelly, town historian of Schaghticoke

Ibelieve that the portion of the village of Valley Falls in the town of Schaghticoke had become basically a small suburb by 1940, with no remaining commercial properties. The new bridge was built across the Hoosic River in 1939, which made it more diffcult to walk to the main part of the village, in Pittstown. 75 people lived in the area as of the 1940 US Census, 81 in 1950. In each year about 1/5th of the residents worked in the “cotton mill”- I assume the Thompson Mill. Others worked for the railroad. In the 1940 census. Two people, Ethel B. King, here called Bessie, and her dad, Levi, were listed as having their own baking business. Ethel continued to have the business in 1950. I don’t know whether it was in her home, or perhaps across the river in Pittstown. She and her father had both previously worked in the mill. In the 1950 census, Francis Shriver, 44, was listed as the proprietor of a garage- but he didn’t live in the area very long. And James Harrington had his law offce in his home. This is the current Sassatelli home, and was later the home of James’ son, James, also an attorney.

▶ them” about their chosen piece. In addition to poetry readings the group joined in the singing of several hymns by black writers. Stand by Me by Charles Alberty Tindley and We Shall Overcome were among a few of the hymns that flled the library with song. Julia Weston of the Valley Falls Library accompanied the hymns with music.

The Valley Falls Library Board was “honored” to share this unique opportunity to celebrate the work of black poets with the local community. The community showed great support for the event which the library board hopes will be the frst of many.

The Valley Falls Library joins the other efforts across the nation to celebrate February as Black History month. Events, activities and educational opportunities held throughout the month will put a highlight on recognizing and celebrating black history and culture. In 1976, President Gerald Ford became the frst president to formally recognize February as Black History Month. Since 1976 presidents have made annual proclamations honoring this tradition.

Though the Hoosic Valley Central School District was created in 1938, it had no building of its own. Students went to school in the existing buildings in the villages of Schaghticoke and Valley Falls. In September 1945, district voters had approved the purchase of the current site, cost not to exceed $5000, along with $7000 to purchase “motor vehicle equipment” to transport children to school. (TR 4 Sept 1945)Principal Clarence Iverson, returning to his job after Naval service during the war, must have been so relieved at the prospect of a new building. He reported registration of 615 students for school year 1946-1947, an increase of 35 over the previous year. (TR 24 July 1946) Every year the district had had to fnd places to hold classes. For example, in 1948, frst grade was in the Gifford home in Valley Falls and a new room had to be prepared to separate the 3rd and 4th grades in the Schaghticoke school. Valley Falls students in grades 3, 4, and 6-12 would go to school in Valley Falls, in grades 5-7 in Schaghticoke. Schaghticoke students in Grades 1-7 would go to school in Schaghticoke, in grades 8-12, in Valley Falls. Some one-room school houses were still in use all over the towns of Schaghticoke and Pittstown. In 1950 local well-known local architect Frank Morgan drew up the plans for a new school, a combination grade and high school, with special provisions for kindergarten, plus a cafeteria, and an auditorium/gymnasium, and room for athletic felds. It was to cost $830,000, with a fve-year

fnancial plan worked out by the State Education Department. (TR 2 Feb 1950, 21 June 1950) All of that school is still in use as part of the Hoosic Valley Jr.-Sr. High School, with the elementary school, opened in 1959, across the street.

The illustration is of the proposed new school. Next week, more about the village of Schaghticoke in the 1940’s.

Veterans

The well-being of veterans is a priority here in Saratoga County. In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifce of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.

Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans fle their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Offce, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifce by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.

Big Snow: The Great Blizzard of 1888

The biggest snowstorm in American history dumped nearly 5 feet of snow on the Northeastern U.S. and was aptly named Great Blizzard of 1888 or “The Great White Hurricane”. It occurred in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut between March 11 and 14, and saw as much as 58 inches (4.8 feet) of snowfall, with the highest recordings in Saratoga Springs, New York. Bennington, Vermont, reported 48 inches and Middletown, Connecticut, received 50 inches. By midnight on March 12, winds reached speeds of 50 miles per hour and snowdrifts as high as 40 feet accumulated in the small town of Bangall, New York (east of Kingston). Railways and telegraph lines shut down — inspiring the creation of the frst underground subway system in New York City. People were stuck indoors for as long as a week. By the time it was over, at least 400 people had lost their lives and there was $25 million in damages ($850 million today’s money). Among the victims was Senator Roscoe Conkling who contracted pneumonia after attempting to walk 3 miles in the storm on March 12th, 1888.

“The 700,000 New Yorkers in NY21 Should Not Be Pawnson a Chessboard!”

TEDISCO & WALSH CALL FOR NEW CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO PROTECT VOTER RIGHTS IN CONGRESSIONAL SPECIAL ELECTIONS

Senator Jim Tedisco (R,C-Ballston Lake) and Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh (R,C-Ballston) today announced a new constitutional amendment they are introducing to protect voter rights and ensure that over 700,000 New Yorkers are not left in the lurch for nine months without representation in Washington, D.C.

Tedisco and Walsh’s legislation would enshrine current state law for holding special elections into the New York State Constitution and make it much more diffcult for governors and Albany legislative majorities to use honest, lawabiding New Yorkers as pawns on a chess board while they play political games with whoever is in power in the White House and U.S. Capitol.

Senator Tedisco and Assemblywoman Walsh have been forced to go this route due to a bill introduced late Friday night by the Majority Leaders (S.4588) to enable the Governor to delay calling the special election for New

York’s 21st Congressional District seat until the November 2025 election. Both Tedisco and Walsh represent portions of the 21st Congressional District.

Under current state law, when a vacancy for Congress occurs, the Governor has up to 10 days to call for a Special Election which must be held within 70 to 80 days. Tedisco and Walsh’s constitutional amendment would simply enshrine this current law into the state constitution and prevent governors and majorities from constantly fnagling state law to suit their dubious whims.

Senator Tedisco noted that Kathy Hochul was elected to Congress in a May 24, 2011, special election following the February 9, 2011 resignation of former Congressman Chris Lee.

“Kathy Hochul’s constituents in Western New York only had to wait about three months to get a congressional representative to serve them, why should the residents of the 21st Congressional District have to wait nine months?” asked Tedisco.

The Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time: On Living The Inner Meaning Of Faith

by Harold Wessell, OblSB, DMin(hc) February 9, 2025

The First Reading is Isaiah 58:7-10 of the Book of Isaiah. The prophet points out that the people will not receive divine power until they live out the inner meaning of their faith -- the heart of the Law of Moses -- by doing justice and mercy to their own people. Then, God will hear their prayers and help them to prosper.

The reading concludes: “If you removed from your midst oppression, false accusations and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afficted, light shall arise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall

“Pass the salt” is a simple request that can miff a hostess who has prepared a gourmet meal, or a request for catsup for a carefully prepared Beef Wellington. And we prefer to leave a light on in the house at night -- many do --- versus the thought of returning to a dark home. These are things we seldom think about. Condiments and electricity are givens of our modern daily life.

What was different in the Palestine of Jesus’ time: lt was only a favor to food; and not only that, it also served as a preservative in the days long before refrigeration. – And in a one room windowless Palestinian dwelling, candlelight meant a great deal in making life livable.

Natural light is one of God’s gifts that makes daily life possible. Salt is synonymous with favor and good tasting food. The Jesus of today’s gospel tells his disciples, and all of us that we are to be the spiritual light and salt of the world. When there is impending seemingly impenetrable darkness, we seek to cast the light of a faith-flled life: one that gives meaning to human existence.

Have we not all known people who live the values of their faith, values that they had internalized? There was no need to preach; their lives were sermons in themselves. And we have all experienced times of darkness, times when scandal rocked the church, or when some crime

or felony came very close to home. Yes, it was not that different in Jesus’ time. His teaching, his preaching and his works brought light to a very darkened and divided world at a time when the “salt corpse” had gone fat.

Christian faith has brought light and favor to countless lives.

Religion was never meant to be a dreary, lifeless affair, a matter of “do’s and don’ts.” True faith rings with joy in the midst of the most diffcult times. It is to this kind of faith that we are called. As we read Paul today, we hear that all of this is contingent upon the power of God. It is all pure gift. – A gift that makes us to be light and salt, ourselves.

This week Paul continues his discussion of true “wisdom” for the Christian. We have seen that it is not that of the great pagan philosophers, and is not a pride in self-righteousness and keeping the Law of Moses perfectly. Instead, it is based on accepting that salvation comes through the death and resurrection of Jesus -hardly a normal notion of “wisdom.” Absurd by ordinary standards, it is the basis of the Christian life of solitude, justice, humility.

Paul here continues his discussion of true “wisdom” for the Christian. We have seen that it is not that of the great pagan philosophers -- not a pride or self-righteousness

-- at keeping the Law of Moses perfectly. Instead it is based on accepting that salvation comes through the death and resurrection of Jesus... hardly a normal idea of “wisdom.” Absurd by ordinary standards, it is the basis of the Christian life of justice, humility, and mercy toward all. This is also brought out in the second reading, which is First Corinthians 1 or 2:1-5

The gospel for the Fifth Sunday is Matthew 5:13-16, where we hear Jesus use the same imagery or language as he said to the disciples: “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its taste, it is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountaintop cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it in under a bushel basket, but set it out as a background where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others: that they may see your good works and deeds and glorify your heavenly father.” 29 Farrell St., Mechanicville

YUKON: Hound mix, male, 1 year, 40 lbs. Yukon loves attention and snuggles. He will share a snack, join you on the couch, or roll over for belly rubs. Yukon loves to take walks and run around the yard. He likes to play with other dogs. Cats are unknown. The world is Yukon’s playground. He is food motivated, responsive to commands, and learning quickly. He is also house trained. He still needs some fne tuning about what can go in his mouth, but he responds to “no.”

JORGE: Terrier mix, male, 5 months, 23 lbs. Meet Jorge! This super fun, happy little guy is ready to bring some joy to your life! He is one of the friendliest pups you’ll ever meet — he greets everyone with a wagging tail and kisses! He gets along with all of the dogs in his foster home and would love to have a canine sibling in his forever home! Jorge is learning to walk on leash and loves car rides, happily snoozing away in his car seat without a care in the world. He is crate trained and sleeps quietly through the night. Housebreaking is a work in progress but he gets better each day! He’s very food-motivated, which makes trick training a blast. A fenced yard is strongly preferred as Jorge is happiest when he can run around outside with his people or canine friends. He will do best in a home where someone has time to focus on him because he is so smart and eager to please. We’re unsure what he’s mixed with but we anticipate his adult weight to be about 40 lbs.
