There are a total of 60 niches, each niche can store 2 urns for family members providing a total of 120.

Curtiss said the decision to start the process of installing a columbarium started 3 years ago. Vendors first had to be found. The columbarium is from Barre, Vt. , made of 100% granite. It weighs 22,000 lbs. The walls are 2” thick. He said they could have bought a cheaper version but it would not have the quality, weight, and sturdiness. After finding a vendor New York State had to give approval, which took 6 months. And finally, COVID delayed the process.

He reported that as of late about 50% of the population opts for cremation. There is room for 3 more units if needed. Curtiss said this will be the only publicly available columbarium in the county

Originally negotiations called for MPM requesting $60 million from the past four tax years. LETTER TO THE EDITOR t. John’s Cemetery has recently been the site of two separate, destructive acts. One was an act of nature, as the damaging winds of the recent tornado warning left considerable debris spread throughout the cemetery. We all know how violent storms can cause significant damage to property, and can even threaten lives. Acts of nature are certainly unfortunate, but the second destructive act at St. John’s Cemetery is even more disheartening. At some point in early August, the cemetery was vandalized with some forty-nine gravestones tipped off their foundations. Vandalism of any kind is awful, but to vandalize a cemetery, a final resting place for loved ones, is unimaginable. The incident is being investigated by the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department, and anyone with any information about the crime is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department.

The purpose of my letter is to recognize the wonderful acts of kindness, and service, that came after the volcano, and the vandalism, at the cemetery. The volcano winds came through Schaghticoke on a Saturday evening, and the very next day, parishioners from Transfiguration Parish spent 4-5 hours cleaning up branches and the 18” cherry tree that came down on several headstones. A grateful thank you goes to Ken and Kevin Madigan and their sister Tess, Evan Carknard, and Gary Squires and his daughter and grandchildren for their efforts cleaning up the debris left over from the extreme winds of the tornado.

Two days after I met with the Rensselaer County Deputies at the cemetery, I received phone calls from Josh Boyce and Jeshua Cail. They offered to lead a group of volunteers in replacing the vandalized stones at St. John’s Cemetery.

I observed the crew as they worked the first day, and was so impressed with the quality of their work, and the care and reverence they gave to the stones they were working on. On behalf of Transfiguration Parish, and the St. John’s Cemetery Committee, I express our deepest gratitude and thanks to Jeshua Cail, Josh Boyce, Gary Squires, Owen Harder Terry Brust, Matt Dormandy, Cody Davenport, Rich Boyce, Crystal Boyce, and Jason Coffin and the staff of A-CutAbove Lawnscapes, LLC. We so often see outstanding acts of charity and kindness arise out of terrible events. The actions of those who volunteered their time to restore St. John’s Cemetery to the peaceful resting place it is intended to be, is a perfect example of the goodness we all should strive for. May God bless all those who offered their time and service in support of St. John’s Cemetery and the Schaghticoke Community.

Perhaps you saved the lettuce but “they” destroyed the broccoli, or, your hostas are disappearing one by one, above and below the soil line. VOLES, not moles, are responsible for creating the small tunnels in your gardens that end with a perfect half dollar-sized hole to ‘our’ side of the soil. Back in August they began their search for Winter homes. Remember, when tunneling, moles make mounds of dirt, and chipmunks create scuffing of the edge of their holes. Voles love to eat the roots of any member of the lily family- hostas, Asiatic and Oriental lilies, daylilies and tulips. They will also dine on other plants with thick root systems- astilbes, peonies and iris to name a few. You should check the afore-mentioned list of lilies if you have some, as well as any large shrubs, for perfect little holes near their roots. If you see them, start applying a repellent (MoleMax and VoleScram work very well) to let them know they are not welcome!

RABBITS tend to find large shrubs to burrow under; even better if the shrub is an evergreen.

Once again, take a look around your yard for the larger entry holes rabbits dig and apply a repellent (be aware many repellents work for multiple critters) and always read the label to discover what animals are affected by your repellent of choice. There are repellents specifically for rabbits if they are the only critter you are repelling. (Rabbit Scram) In addition, if your yard is overrun by rabbits, use a physical barrier like a chicken wire fence around the plants

the rabbits tend to nibble.

DEER have been eating and eating. Alarmingly this year, they are eating plants that are on the deerresistant lists., and, as Winter approaches, the deer will shift to eating your evergreens. As with the rabbits, there are many repellents available. A “homegrown” repellent you may wish to try is hanging pieces of Irish Spring bar soap in your shrubs. The deer are repelled by the strong fragrance. Lastly, I would also recommend physical barriers if you have a growing herd.

A final thought to share pertains to fruit trees (edible and ornamental), Japanese Maples and other young trees with small caliper trunks and thin bark.

I recommend wrapping these trunks with tree wrap to keep rodents and rabbits from eating the tender bark. And, if you have a growing population of these critters, apply the tree wrap and then a 3’ tall collar of chicken wire. If the animals are desperate, they will also eat the bark of Weigela and other woody shrubs.

Saratoga Springs Man Involved in Capture of Tojo

Jack Jr. graduated from St. Peter’s Academy (now Saratoga Central Catholic High School) in 1937. He graduated from St. Michael’s College in Toronto, Canada, in June 1942 and joined the Army two months later. In August 1944, he shipped out to the Pacific, where he was reassigned to the Counter Intelligence Corps. physician reluctantly complied when the American Wilpers’ unit spent nine-plus months in the officer urged him to do so, at gunpoint.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace Has a Home

Mechanicville September 12- James Welch hosted an open house showcasing the home of Sleep in Heavenly Peace on Brickyard Road. This new sorkshop will be used for storage and for rainy days.

After working twenty years for Hospice Peg Gleason now volunteers her time for Heavenly Peace. She enjoys the opportunity to work with children. Peg heads up the fundraising efforts for bunks and bedding. They gave special thanks to Wiley Brothers for the lumber they provide.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace will be at the Presbyterian Church in Cambridge on September 19th and at Methodist Church of Ballston Spa in October to build beds on site.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is an organization that builds and delivers beds to children who do not have a bed. Their motto: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!”

Rte. 50 Corridor Enhancement in Progress

by Harold Wessell Town of Milton • September 9th he Milton Town Board presented a Route 50 Corridor Enhancement Study underway being to identify transportation and land use policy recommendations that would guide growth in the NYS Rt. 50 corridor. The study will also explore improvements at the intersection of Northline Road and NYS Route 50. The study area extends from the Village of Ballston Spa to the City of Saratoga Springs. Town encourages their residents as well as those who travel, shop and dine along the corridor to take part in this very important project.

Examined will be existing land use, zoning, access management, Complete Streets concept design as well as transportation and intersection improvements for multiple modes including vehicles, transit, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The corridor was previously studied in 2005. This current effort will update that plan and identify recommendations for implementation.

Included will be intersection improvements, with an analysis of intersection improvements at Northline Road and NYS Route 50 to enhance the traffic flow and complement potential land use changes within the corridor. Two alternatives will be evaluated: (1) signal and geometric modifications, and (2) a roundabout. Developing conceptual plans for intersection improvements will set the stage for future funding to implement the recommended improvements.

Under Land Use and Zoning, the study will evaluate the existing land use and zoning along the corridor to provide a snapshot of the general distribution, location and characteristics of land used.

Land use and zoning differ, in that land use describes what the land is currently being used for, while zoning describes the types of land uses that are allowed by current local zoning laws. This study will evaluate current land uses and make recommendations for future land development guidelines that align with the community vision for this corridor.

The Complete Streets concept includes roadway design features that accommodate safe, convenient access and mobility for multiple modes (pedestrians, bicyclists, public transit riders and motorists) and users of all abilities. The following complete street categories will be considered during this project: – Accessibility, including the ability to move with ease regardless of age or ability and includes presences of facilities for pedestrian, bicyclists and transit riders.

– Connectivity, the ability to connect modes as well as connect neighborhoods to nodes of activity.

– Safety, including a safer environment for all users regardless of mode.

– Placemaking, which involves creating a livable, walkable , vibrant neighborhood with an identify and enhanced quality of life.

Tompkins (age 19) of Stillwater. The defendant was originally arrested on 9/07/2020 and charged with Criminal Possession of a Firearm 4th degree (Felony), Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th degree (Felony) and Aggravated Harassment (Misdemeanor) following an incident in the Town of Stillwater. The defendant remains incarcerated at the Saratoga County Correctional Facility.

The Vermont State Police announced that the remains of Ballston Spa native Jessica Hildenbrandt were found in a Searsburg, Vt. Gravel pit.

She was 43 years old.

The Vermont State Police consider this a homicide.

Anyone who saw Jessica last summer is urged to call the Vt. State Police at 802-442-5421.

He also built a huge underground aqueduct to carry spring water from above High Street to the hotel.

Material for the walls, which would tame the creek’s flow, was a mere addition to all the stone needed for Low’s project. Presumably, much of the dirt to fill in behind the walls came from excavating for the other structures.

Although it is difficult to tell, it appears the land between the channel and the hill at Washington Street was raised three to four feet. Another foot or so of fill has been added since in many places.

Girls on the Run Capital Region (GOTRCR) Fall Season Registration Now Open

Albany, NY – Registration for Girls on the Run Capital Region (GOTRCR), a physical activitybased, positive youth development program for girls in third through eighth grade, is open for the fall season. https://gotrcr.org/Program-Registration This season, Girls on the Run (GOTR) will be offered at 12 locations beginning at the end of September.

There are team in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga & Schenectady County. For the 2020-2021 school year, GOTRCR is offering a flexible program model to accommodate the changing and unpredictable school year due to the pandemic. Teams will be meeting in-person, following social distance guidelines and utilizing appropriately modified activities. There will also be virtual teams which will be meeting completely online.

Flexible Programming Model: While schools are in session, GOTRCR after-school programming will be led in-person by trained coaches with enhanced safety measures that include safe physical distancing measures. Should a school close mid-season, the site will easily transition to a virtual model with lessons that mirror the in-person program.

100% Virtual: Virtual programming will be led by

trained coaches online with lessons that mirror the in-person program. It will include physical activities and social-emotional learning, providing girls with an opportunity to build meaningful connections with their peers and caring adult role models.

Scholarship funding is available to those who qualify. The program fee includes registration for the end-of-season virtual 5k event, a shirt, water bottles, a GOTR swag bag, GOTR journals and various other items. The curriculum includes three parts: • valuing ourselves, • establishing healthy relationships, and • understanding how to connect with and shape the world at large.

For example, an early lesson focuses on identifying and processing emotions, a skill that is critically important these days. Moreover, GOTR teaches girls to stand up for themselves and others, with a lesson on being a “stand-byer” instead of a bystander.

Brace For Fall Driving

s summer turns to fall, the insurance industry sees a marked rise in certain claims due to the change in weather and driving habits.

According to MetLife, New York State is among the top five states in the entire country for these types of auto accidents between the months of September to December. You can help to reduce accidents by being aware of the following type of auto claims.

Animal Collisions. Be aware and slowdown in areas with deer crossing signs, especially at dawn and dusk. Look out for a group, too. Deer don’t usually wander alone so if you see one near the side of the road, there’s likely another one nearby.

Rain and Slick Roads. Slowdown and leave room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

If you skid or slide on the road, don’t slam on the breaks. Do your best to keep your eyes and wheel in the direction you want to go. And make sure your tires are not experiencing dry rotting or going bald.

Replace them if needed.

Sun glare. Drive with your headlights on to provide extra visibility for other drivers on the road and keep your windshield clean and clear from smudges. Invest in a good pair of sunglasses to help reduce glare and make sure to avoid storing papers and other items on your dashboard.

Fog and mist.

Check your front and rear fog light, making sure that they work properly and that you know how to use them. And make sure to give yourself plenty of room between you and the car ahead of you.

Parked cars and parking lots.

Beware of drivers cutting across parking spaces diagonally.

When backing out of a space, double check for other cars in reverse or pedestrians behind you. Do not double park or park in between spots and make sure to park in well-lit areas. If you don’t feel safe when parking at a mall, ask mall security to walk you to your car.

Annual “The Way We Were” Car Show to Go Virtual

August 31, 2020 Ballston Spa, NY he Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association (BSBPA) has announced that the 18th Annual “The Way We Were” Car Show, originally scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 11, 2020 in Ballston Spa, has been cancelled due to coronavirus concerns and restrictions on mass gatherings in New York State.

As one of the most popular judged car shows in the Capital Region, the event is also a major fundraiser for the BSBPA, drawing more than 400 car entries each year and hundreds of spectators to the village’s historic downtown. “While we are disappointed not to have our visitors, vendors and, of course, the fabulous cars this year, we are looking forward to putting on a great show next year”, says car show chairperson Donna Dardaris. “We hope all our regular participants as well as newcomers will join us on October 10, 2021.”

In the meantime, to celebrate and showcase the many fine classic and custom vehicles that would normally line Front Street in the village, the BSBPA is setting up a “The Way It Is” Virtual Car Show Facebook Event and inviting participants to submit photos of the vehicles they would have brought to this year’s show, along with their name and the make, model and year. An entry form for submissions can be found at www.ballston.org. There is no cost to enter.

Please submit vehicles no later than October 5. We will be promoting the page and encouraging folks to “like” their favorite vehicles, so we invite you to share the page and tell friends to visit and vote. We will announce a “People’s Choice” winner for the vehicle photo that has the most “likes” as of October 11. The winner will receive a Ballston Spa gift certificate, good at many local shops, restaurants and services, and a “The Way It Is” T-shirt.

We plan to also offer t-shirts for sale with “The Way It Is” logo for those who like to have a shirt for each year. Proceeds will help support the BSBPA’s community efforts and activities.

Ballston Spa Illustrator Donates Work To Local Bookstore

ORIGINAL ART INCLUDED WITH ONLINE ORDERS OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS riginal artwork by local children’s book illustrator Jody Wheeler will soon be on its way – for free – to twenty lucky customers buying children’s books online from independent bookstore, Battenkill Books in Cambridge, NY. As part of an initiative known as Kid Lit Art Surprise, more than 50 of the nation’s top illustrators are sending packages of their original art for free to independent bookstoresthroughout the country. The small pieces of art are being included as an added “surprise” when customers place online orders for children’s books. Wheeler was paired by the project coordinators to share her work with Battenkill Books in Cambridge, NY and Books are Magic in Brooklyn, NY. “I am so excited to be a part of this volunteer project that gets original art in the hands of people who are actively supporting independent book sellers during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Wheeler. “These local bookstores do so much to promote great books for kids, it is nice that the illustrators can do something to assist them when shopping in stores has been restricted.”

Toby Cox – owner of Three Lives & Company bookstore in Greenwich Village, NY came up with the idea andmentioned it to Caldecott Honor artist Elisha Cooper. In two months, Cooper and fellow authorillustrator Ruth Chan started Kid Lit Art Surprise, based on Cox’s idea.

According to Battenkill Books owner Connie Brooks, “The Kid Lit Art Surprise program has been a shining light in a dark time. The generosity of our illustrator colleagues has overwhelmed us, and we look forward to sharing these “surprises” with our customers. We think they will be as delighted as we have been,” she said.

Wheeler, a children’s book illustrator from Ballston Spa with studios in New York City and in Saratoga County, hascreated the artwork for more than 75 books, including the Corduroy the Bearand Nate the Greatseries, as well as Madeline, ET: The ExtraTerrestrial, the Little House on the Prairie picture book series, and other illustrated books.

CCE and the Farm-to-School Program

SARATOGA COUNTY — School began differently this year. Some students posed for their “First Day” photos wearing new clothes with coordinating masks, while others donned new sweatpants sitting at kitchen tables. Life, as we’ve known it, has changed. Everyone has been forced to reprioritize, reevaluate, and revamp different aspects of daily routines; schools have been uniquely challenged by the new safety guidelines. They have been forced to consider which programs should continue and which programs will need to be reintroduced later. Some Saratoga County Schools are making every effort to continue the Farm to School Program focusing on the importance of maintaining a healthy diet throughout these uncertain times.

In 2018, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County was awarded first round funding for the New York State Farm to School Grant. The purpose of the grant was to educate and supply area schools with locally sourced produce as well as information on good nutrition. The grant introduced a successful collaboration between Pitney Meadows Community Farm and Saratoga Springs Central School District.

In 2019, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County received second round funding and expanded the program to include schools and farms in Galway, Corinth, and Schuylerville.

Saratoga Schools share the program by inviting students and staff to a “Harvest of the Month”. Each month volunteers have come into the school doling out samples of a seasonal vegetable recipe during school periods. The school then offers that recipe as part of the standard school lunch menu. Students are given the opportunity to provide feedback on the food they’ve tried. In some cases these are their first introductions to the new recipes. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive and the vast majority of students (and staff) return for second helpings!

On September 22nd, Saratoga Springs School district will be having its first Harvest of the Month for the 2020 school year. Cucumber and tomato salad will be served. Galway, Corinth, and Schuylerville are in their first year of the Farm-to-School Grant and are actively pursuing ways to begin with their own Harvest of the Month lunches.

Saratoga County 4-H Kicks off Animal Show Series

Ballston Spa, NY— Saratoga County 4-H Animal Show Series is a five week long series hosted at the Saratoga County 4-h Training Center on Middleline Road in Ballston Spa. The series was developed as a replacement to the Animal Shows typically featured at the County fairs in the summer.

Animal shows are an integral part of animal science and agricultural education. Providing youths an opportunity to present their animals to a judge allows owners to identify the strongest attributes of their animals, as well as any necessary improvements. The process is a great learning tool that contributes valuable insights for breeding priorities.

The series will feature different animal species each Saturday. It launched this past Saturday, September 12th with Rabbits and Cavies (aka guinea pigs for laymen). The next 4 weeks will have demonstrations with Sheep, Goats, Dairy cows, and Horses, respectively.

success. Ten families were given their own socially distanced table to ready their animals to present at the judges table. Participants were judged in 3 different categories; showmanship, breed classes, and fur classes. The competitors ranged in ages 5-18 year old. The most inspiring part of the day came from watching the older “veterans” guide and encourage the younger first-timers. Animal shows are one of the many ways that 4-H offers supplemental education that serves as a foundation in subjects such as math and science.

Saratoga County 4-H Animal Show Series will continue next Saturday with a sheep show on September 19th, followed by a Goat show on September 26, Dairy Cattle Show on October 3rd and a Horse Show on October 10th. Mary Lasky Retirement Announced at Village Board

The mayor explained that “she came out of retirement just to help the village, because she cared... and she left us in really great shape. I could never have accomplished all of that and so little time without her help.” Deputy Town Clerk Julia Smith was appointed to succeed her, effective immediately.

At the request of the Saratoga Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mayor proclaimed the week of September 17-23 as Constitution Week in Ballston Spa. September 17 Marks the the 233rd anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States.

He reported he has received and forwarded to the board structural and environmental reports on 66 Front St., the Village Hall. He explained the studies were authorized by the board last year, COVID. //He noted there are some things that needed to be done rather quickly, like the retaining wall holding up the sidewalk on Bath Street.

Among actions taken, the Board voted: That the Ribbon Café in conjunction with the Mollie Wilmot Radiology Oncology Center be authorized to host a cancer survivor retreat/fundraiser on 9/26/20 in the alleyway adjacent to the café on Prospect Street.

ast Commander of the Korean War Veterans Association, Adirondack Chapter #60, Robert S. Garland Congratulates Paul J. O’Keefe on being elected and sworn in as the 20202021 Commander. Paul becomes the 10th Commander of Chapter #60.

He also serves as Chaplain for the New York State Korean War Veterans. The 7th Commander of Chapter #60 was Paul’s classmate from Mechanicville High School “Class of ‘50”, Ray Waldron. They both met in Korea while serving in the Army. Ray in the 21st Division, Paul in the 24th Division.

In a joint effort by county government to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans living in Saratoga County, in 2011, the County Clerk, Board of Supervisors, and Veterans Service Agency created the “F.A.V.O.R.” (Find & Assist Veterans of Record) Veterans Discount Program.

Ballston Spa Resident and Iraq War Veteran Promoted to Colonel in NY Army National Guard

LATHAM, NY (09/14/2020) New York Army National Guard Col. Pete Mehling, a Ballston Spa resident and Iraq War veteran, received his new rank during a promotion ceremony at the Joint Force Headquarters in Latham on September 12, 2020.

Major General Raymond Shields, the Adjutant General for the New York and commander of the New York Army National Guard, officiated the ceremony.

Mehling, a career artillery officer, serves full-time as the Director of Logistics for the New York Army National Guard at the state headquarters.

Mehling was an active duty field artillery officer prior to joining the New York Army National Guard.

His prior positions include Fire Support Officer in the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y., Battalion Fire Support Officer in the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas, and Battery Commander in the First Division’s 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, including a deployment to Ar Ramadi, Iraq.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals and two Amy Achievement Medals. He has also earned the U.S. Army Ranger Tab and the Army Parachutist Badge and is a member of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of field artillery, for his service career in that combat arms branch.

Accompanying Mehling were his wife Jennifer, children William, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Charles, and his sister Daphne.

Mehling thanked the officers, non-commissioned officers and Soldiers he served with over his 23 year career.

“The camaraderie that we build in shared hardships is what makes the Army unique and is among its greatest qualities,” he said.

Mehling also thanked his family for their support of his career.

“I would like to thank my wife Jennifer for her unyielding support and iron resolve. And to my children, you have been a big part of this too, and you all make me proud every day.”

Under this exciting program, when honorably discharged veterans file their original discharge papers with the County Clerk’s Office, they receive a picture ID card that they can present to local participating merchants that wish to honor them for their service and sacrifice by providing a discount on purchases of goods and services.

CCE Equine Horse Farm Tour Reaching Over 700 People

BALLSTON SPA— The last weekend of the 2020 Saratoga Track season offered beautiful weather, perfect for a successful Horse Farm Tour offered

by CCE Equine of Saratoga County. On Sunday, September 6th over 700 people came to enjoy Mill Creek Farm, a local Thoroughbred and Standardbred breeding farm in Saratoga County.

The Horse Farm Tour offered a behind the scenes experience of what it takes to prepare a horse for life at a race track. Participants were able to listen to an audio recording of the farm owners explaining the challenges and joys of owning a breeding farm and growing a business in the equine industry.

A scavenger hunt for youths and adults featured questions like “ what color is the skin of a gray horse” and “what is the difference between a filly and a colt?”. The answers were scattered throughout the farm. The tour provided a transparent educational experience of life on a horse farm.

Brieanna Hughes, CCE Equine coordinator, said of the event “We were excited to rally our staff and volunteers again to safely offer an experience that really highlights what Saratoga County is all about: Family farms, beautiful scenery, healthy horses, and a community happy to serve.”

Forgiveness is Paramount in Christian Life

by Harold Wessell n today’s business parlance, it might be called Job One. Christians are called to always be “forgiven forgivers:” empowered by their own experience of being forgiven. One of the reasons Christians are called to holiness is to make visible the values of God in this world. Some of these values come to the fore in today’s scriptures.

The first reading for this 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time in the Common Lectionary used in several Christian bodies, from Sirach 27:30-28:7, sets the tone for the day.

The book of Sirach is in Catholic Bibles and in much of the Eastern Church, but not in the Jewish canon of the Scriptures; nor the Protestant canon, which follows the Jewish. Sirach was composed in Hebrew about 185 BC by a wisdom teacher in Israel, but was thereby too new to be included among the sacred scriptures, which were supposed to have been written before the time of Ezra in 458 BC. It is considered by many to be among the Apocryphal, or Deuterocanonical (i.e. a secondary canon) books, also worthy of being read by believers.

It had long been known in a Greek translation made by Sirach’s grandson about 130. But parts of Hebrew copies were found in 20th century. It was cited by numerous writings and church councils in early Christianity -- such as in the Didache, a document of belief and life and liturgy perhaps older than at least one of the Gospels. It was also cited Council of Council of Florence in 1442.

But signifcantly, with its late date: Many of its thoughts show similarities to the way Jesus would teach a century or so later. Sirach argues just as Jesus did: “How can you expect forgiveness if you yourself do not forgive?” Forgiveness of others must always be seen in the light of the divine mercy that has been extended to you, and that you count on to the end of your life.

And so we hear in today’s First Reading: “Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. The vengeful will suffer the LORD’S vengeance, for He remembers their sins in detail. Forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.”

It continues, “Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the LORD?” Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself, can he seek pardon for his own sins?

If one who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins?”

Take note in scripture of the frequency with which human forgiveness is seen as a counterpart to the divine. It stands at the heart of the Lord’s Prayer: “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” (And that means, as the Greek rendering brings out well: as we have ALREADY forgiven them, even before they offended us.)

In today’s gospel parable (Mt 18:21-35), the large debt owed the master by his servant was totally written off because the former was “moved with compassion.”

From the cross, Jesus forgave his jeering opponents. It is often said that the hardest thing to say is, “I forgive you” because it cannot be said insincerely.

But forgiveness, once extended, brings an incredible peace and tranquility of spirit. If we do not forgive, we can hardly ask forgiveness of God. Christ reminds us that we are not to bring our gift to the altar without first seeking reconciliation with our brother or sister.

In the Gospel passage we hear a further important aspect of being the Church of Jesus: practicing forgiveness the way Jesus himself did. Never hold back the gift of forgiving others, and never get tired of forgiving because you feel you have done it enough.

“Peter approached Jesus. and asked him, ‘Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must forgive?

As many as seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘1 say to you, nor seven times but seventy-seven times.’” That expression is the ancient figure of speech for totality – The forgiveness is to be unlimited, and that is still so in our time.

Gianna Stella Mormile

MECHANICVILLE - Gianna Stella Mormile was born and passed away on September 8, 2020, in utero.

Gianna is survived by her parents, Laura Mormile & Leonard Baker, her grandparents, Paul & Sally Mormile, her Aunt & Uncle, Antonia & Tyler Gratton, as well as her cousin Cooper Gratton. In addition, she is survived by her beloved dog Eskimo, as well as, extended family & friends. Gianna is predeceased by her great grandparents Stella & Paul Mormile and Bill & Joyce Weir, as well as many great aunts and uncles.

Gianna, a name which means ‘God is gracious’ was given this first name because she was the brightest light in her mom’s life. Gianna was a vibrant baby, who kept her mom on her toes by continuously kicking in the womb. She enjoyed her Grandmother’s egg sandwiches as well as homemade strawberry short cake desserts. In addition, she enjoyed daily organic fruit squeezes as well as blueberry Kodiak cake muffins. She also enjoyed afternoon naps with her mom, as well as listening to her mother sing in the car. Her favorite song was ‘Everyday’ by Buddy Holly.

One of her favorite past times during the summer was sitting out in the garage each summer night and listening to her mom chat with her grandfather.

A special thank you to the Albany Med: Obstetrics & Gynecology team and Dr. Dropkin & team for their continual monitoring of Gianna. A special thank you to the Albany Medical Birthing Center staff, especially Katie, who helped Laura through the birth & bringing Gianna to her final resting place. The entire Mormile family thanks all their family and friends for their continual love & support during this very difficult time.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, Sept. 21 from 1-3PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118 with a funeral home service to follow beginning at 3PM. Wearing of masks will be required and social distancing procedures will be in place.

Anne F. Ciani - 86

MECHANICVILLE — Anne F. Ciani, 86, of Saratoga Ave, died peacefully in the comfort of her home on September 19, 2020 with her loving and faithful daughter and son in law by her side. Born in Mechanicville on September 24, 1933, daughter of the late Ralph and Rose Forino Berlingieri, she was a graduate of Mechanicville High School.

Anne worked as the head cashier for the Central Market in Mechanicville for many years. She also worked at DiSiena Furniture for some time.

A member of the Italian Fraternal Society Women’s Auxiliary, she enjoyed playing bocce in different leagues throughout the years. She also always looked forward to her monthly luncheon with her girlfriends at the Ugly Rooster. At home she was an amazing cook. She thoroughly enjoyed creating delicious Italian meals for her family, especially around the holidays. An excellent baker as well, dessert was never forgotten either. Anne loved being in the company of her family at all holiday and family functions.

Anne was predeceased by her husband Joseph J. Ciani, who died in 1988, as well as her sisters Mary(Dom) Zappone and Dorothy(John) Reitano and sister in law Linda Berlingieri.

Survivors include her daughter and son in law Lisa and Tony Godin of Schuylerville, her brother Ralph(Ginnie) Berlingieri Jr of TX and a host of loving nieces and nephews, cousins and their families.

Heartfelt thanks to Anne’s aide, Jen Hersh, for always going above and beyond the call of duty and for the care and compassion given to her over the past year.

Clifford H. Vickery - 99

HALFMOON - Clifford H. Vickery, age 99 of Halfmoon, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. Born on June 15, 1921 in Rochester, he was the son of the late Albert and Loretta Buchin. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Phyllis DuBois Vickery, with whom he shared 67 wonderful years, his daughter Ann Vickery, and granddaughter Caroline Melosh, and his Aunt Annie and Uncle Eddie Suhr, who raised him.

Clifford served in the US Navy during WWII. After the war, he earned his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from RPI. He spent his career as a mechanical and electrical engineer for NY Telephone Co. He enjoyed the rural life and along with his wife, raised their three children while tending to their family farm.

He is survived by his daughters Patricia Vickery, Linda (Kenneth) Vickery-Zink, grandchildren Meryl Singer, Tara (Dan) Welker, and Clifford (Emily) Hudgins, and great-grandchildren Mia, Thomas, and Cassidy Welker, and Harper Hudgins, and other loving family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 19th at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 4 Northcrest Dr., in Clifton Park.

Masks and social distancing will be required.

Caddyshackers Recap 2020 Season

raditionally the third Saturday in September is earmarked for the Caddyshack league yearending tournament and banquet. However, in one final acknowledgement of Covid, the Caddyshackers forewent their final event this

deserve to be highlighted.

Outside of the league title, the most coveted award is most likely “Most Improved Player.” An impressive 15 players lowered their handicaps over the course of the season, but it was year. emerging stars Kordell Benson and Ben VanEarden That doesn’t mean there weren’t a multitude of who led the field. Both Kordell and Ben dropped their accomplishments over the course of the season that handicaps by an incredible seven strokes!

First-year Caddyshacker Carter Benson bagged the season’s lone “eagle” (two-UNDER-par on a single hole). Back on Week 10 after a massive drive, Carter reached the green of the uphill par-5 18th hole with his second shot and made a tap-in putt for the amazing “3”.

With a shortened regular season, the par and birdie totals were depressed compared to prior years. However, that didn’t stop a quintet of players from still setting new personal bests.

Matt Fauler and Joe Ryan established new career highs for both pars and birdies while Kordell Benson (pars), Brad Colvin (birdies), and Ben VanEarden (birdies) also set new marks.

A trio of players posted the lowest “net” (actual minus handicap) score of the season. League sophomore Jim Sweet, Ben VanEarden, and Carter Benson all tallied low nets of 29 (seven strokes better than their respective handicaps)!

season. The Hoosick Falls native shot a flawless even-par 36 on the treacherous back nine in Week 12.

Young guns Kordell Benson and Dan Genevick made history becoming the first team to ever win all 11 points in a match. The momentous accomplishment fueled their second half title run.

During the opening three weeks where golf carts weren’t allowed due to Covid restrictions, the Caddyshackers held an unofficial three-round tournament.

Bruce M. Sausville was the run-away champion traversing the 27 holes in an incredible 116 net 94 (an average of nearly 38 net 31 per round). League veteran Bruce Bailey came in second with a strong three-round total of 126 net 102.

In all it was a tremendous year for the league despite the unexpected hurdles, and anticipation is already building for 2021.

Ty Colvin and Joe Ryan will be looking for an unprecedented third league title (and second straight) while 17 other duos will try to unseat the reigning champs.

Kordell and Ben will try to build on this year’s “Most Improved” honors, and everyone is looking forward to the return of the weekly closest to the pin and longest putt contests.

Schaghticoke- Brian and Heather Valade are proud to announce that they will be opening up their own restaurant, Broken Road BBQ. For the last 4 years they have operated the Curvy Girls Food Truck. Customers have been asking when they would open up their own restaurant. Despite COVID last April they decided to go in the restaurant business.

Heather, who will be he head chef, brings 20 years of experience in the food service industry. She started in food service when in high school home economics class.

Her homemade pies were a great success and from there she found a career. Heather has worked at Mohegan Sun before starting her own business with Brian.

Since bringing Curvy Girls to O’Reilly’s in Mechanicville they have donated 10% of the proceeds to the Mechanicville Community Services Center. The Curvy Girls Food Truck will no longer be coming to O’Reilly’s due to the opening of Broken Road BBQ. Brian and Heather will continue their tradition of generosity at their restaurant.

Portion of the proceeds from the sale of the “Meg Burger” will to the family of Megan Dyer.

The Grand Opening will be held On October 1st. Among those attending will be elected officials Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin, Jake Ashby, and Tod Tessman.
