LYNNE STONE, RN

Augusta Kessler Siegel 1908-1998

1. My Story Begins When I was born on August 3 of 1908, there was no air-conditioning, no radios, no television. There were lots of “no’s”. As I start writing this little story, a new year is starting. It is February, 1983, and the changes that have taken place these past 75 years have been simply miraculous. Probably nothing compared to the next 75 years that, unfortunately, I will never see. It’s hard to think that I, too, will someday be gone from the face of the earth, so I will not think. I will just carry on as time goes by. My mother gave birth first to a boy. Five girls followed, but the little baby boy lived only six weeks. I never did know what caused his death, but mamma used to say, the doctors called it a “raise,” which I believe was meant to be a rash. It could have been a rash from most any infant or child disease, but my papa and mama had been in America not too many years and didn’t understand what to do and from whom to get advice. So baby was buried by the “Homler Society.” There were many immigrants who came from Russia, from the same town. When they got to America, they joined the group, then and still call The Society. They said the baby was still just a piece of flesh and didn’t have to be buried in a regular plot. So with good intentions, they took the little baby away, and papa and mama never knew where he was buried. They thought this was how they did things in America, so they never got an answer and had to forget it ever happened. On January 23, 1907 the second one, Mildred, was born. The third was myself, Gussie. The fourth was Fanny, on February 12, 1910, then Sylvia on May 29, 1912, then Ruth on May 4, 1917. Ruth was the last. She came five years after Sylvia, but the rest of us were born a year and a half apart. Most of the immigrants worked in factories, took factory work home, or opened a business. Papa and mama came to America within a couple of years of each other. Papa came first, then mama, and they got married in New York. They had their honeymoon in Canarsie, Brooklyn. Canarsie at the start of the 1900’s

was country, with very few houses, a few boarding houses, and hotels, and was a recommended place to spend a honeymoon. Mildred and I were born on Goerick Street on the east side of lower Manhattan. Later, papa bought a small candy store in Brooklyn for $400 at 702 5th Avenue, between 21st and 22nd streets. It was open seven days a week from early morning to late at night. It was the ground floor of a house, and we bought the whole building. We lived on the first floor (above the store) and rented the second to a tenant. We had five rooms. Two were bedrooms that had one door into the hall and one door into the rest of the apartment. Then there was a living room or parlor at the front end, a dining room at the rear end, and another bedroom in the middle as a walk through. We children slept three in a bed. There was no bathroom, only a sink in the dining room. We used the dining room only on holidays when we had company. We also used that room when we needed a bed for a visitor. Then a few chairs would be put next to each other and covered with some pillows, and the youngest of us would have the “privilege” of sleeping on the chairs for the night. We had only one toilet for the entire house, tenants and all. This toilet was in the cellar. You had to go into the hallway, walk down to the ground floor, and then go down another flight of stairs to the basement. There were two rooms there where we kept merchandise for the store. The rear room was on the same level as the backyard and was bright and sunny. Then there was the cellar itself, which had a very small window with bars for a little light. You could get into it either from a hallway or from the sidewalk. To get to it from the street, you had to walk down stone steps after opening two wooden cellar doors. The toilet room was only about 4’ x 4’, and I had a window-like opening for air. The flush was the big wooden box that hung near the ceiling, contained water, and flushed when you pulled a chain. Then it refilled itself. We never even knew what toilet paper was at that time. We tore up newspapers into squares about 5 inches square, ran a carpet needle with a heavy string through corner, and hung the big batch on a nail. That is what we used.

Staten Island Hebrew Academy Chumash Celebration

T

he fourth graders at Staten Island Hebrew Academy celebrated the momentous occasion of receiving their chumashim on Thursday May 24. The program was opened by beloved Judaic studies principal Mrs. Dina Kukhashvili. Mrs. K. explained that the children are ready to receive the chumashim as they now are able to read and translate Chumash and Rashi. The children presented a delightful song and skit performance going through the 7 days of creation. Following the performance the children were escorted to the Yeshiva of Staten Island where they were greeted by the Rosh HaYeshiva, HaRav Reuven Feinstein shlita, and the yeshiva's mashgiach, Rabbi Chaim Mintz shlita. Rabbi Mintz was impressed by the children’s behavior and knowledge of Judaica. SIHA has grown in a few short years from a school of only a few students to a school of over 90 students and counting. SIHA offers early drop

11

off and late pickup to accommodate working parents. As Staten Island became a popular borough of choice for many unaffiliated Jews of Russian descent, their children were in public school. Lay leaders such as Mr. Paul Trenk and Dr. Marvin Schick recognized the need for a school that offers a strong academic education while at the same time fostering a love of Torah and mitzvos. Currently many of the students are of Russian origin. Rabbi Shlomo Uzhansky is the founding dean,Dr. Chana Uzhansky serves as educational consultant. Mrs. Alexandra Slonim is the popular general studies principal. The school proudly offers their students a strong Judaic studies program, a highly academic general studies curriculum including Singapore math, Russian, art, music etc. SIHA is located at 3495 Richmond Rd. in Staten Island.

Part 12

Remembering Rebbetzin Miriam Libby Weiss, Zt”l, Zy”a Part One By Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss

L

ast week, we discussed the weighty issue of the value of every moment of human life. As a follow up, let me share with you, my dear readers, some memories of how my wife fought with every fiber of her being to fulfill this special mitzvah of v’chai bahem, to live as long as possible. I must confess that has been so far the most painful of the seventeen articles that I have written about her since it necessitated dredging up very painful memories. However, our oldest daughter, Chani, tichye, made a very astute observation. She said that most of the time people try to purge the last days or months of a sick person’s life from their memory. They want to forget the emaciated look and the painful gasps of the sick person. In Mommy’s case however, we can’t afford to forget her last years since they were so full of courage, love, and valorous deeds. The first thing I remember is her mantra that she said anytime things got tough. She would say to me, “I made you a promise,” or “I’ve got to keep my promise.” This is in reference to what she told me all the way in the beginning of her diagnosis, that for my sake she would fight to live as long as possible. She also wanted feverishly to live to walk down our daughter, Rina Tzivia, to the chuppah. Indeed, she would succeed at this – and more than one person has told me that the most memorable scene they have ever witnessed at a wedding was the sight of her lifting up the torch in triumph when we walked Rina down to the chuppah, or when she raised her gloved hands in exultation by the kabbolas hapanim this past Labor Day, with the help of Hashem. When thinking about her courageous battle to live, I remember one time in the chemo lab, she had a sudden seizure. She crashed the place, bringing doctors, nurses and technicians to her aid. It was truly a frightening experience. We would spend the next twenty-four hours in Montefiore Hospital without ever finding out why it happened. But, what was truly remarkable was that two weeks later, at her regularly scheduled chemo appointment, she was back in the chair for another seven hour session. I remember marveling how she could do so, but she was determined to live. After a year of chemotherapy, she completely lost her

24

sense of taste. But that didn’t stop her from eating so that she could have the strength to continue on. She would tell me that she still can enjoy the food with her sense of smell. All her life, she was a Devil Dog, Flying Saucer, Hershey chocolate kind of ‘nosher.’ Now, she had specially squeezed orange juice, salads with kale and arugula, Ensure clear, and anything else that was nutritious for her continued health. She would painfully push herself to go down the stairs to take tortuous walks with her walker so as to avoid blood clots and so that her muscles should not atrophy. And she would sit, daily for hours, receiving intravenous hydration with extra electrolytes (done voluntarily with great dedication by her friend, Mrs. Elkie Jacobson-Trenk), so that she would have strength for further chemotherapy and immunotherapy. I remember her laying in the second seat of my SUV as we would travel in bumper-to-bumper traffic, sometimes for two hours, to Eastchester in the Bronx where she would receive the chemo. She would be in pain in the back seat and would have to take slow release morphine and Percocet to make the trip and then sit for upwards of seven hours receiving medicines that would make her nauseous and headachy – yet she did it every two weeks for two years. I remember how during the chemo, she would daven for many other sick people and have in mind the Talmudic adage, “Kol hamispallel be’ad chaveiro vehu tzarich le’oso davar, hu nehe techila – Whoever prays for their friend and they need the same salvation, they will be answered first.” Oh how I remember how she would bentch licht with tears begging Hashem for more life. I remember when she was in pain, during the chemo or in the hospital, I would say Tehillim together with her. We would say often the kapital, “Shir lamalos, Es einai el hahorim…” She especially liked an explanation I gave her on the verse, “Ezri mei’im Hashem, oseh Shamaiyim v’Oretz – My help is from Hashem who made the Heaven and the Earth.” I asked her, “Why do we reference - in connection to Divine help - the fact that Hashem made the Heaven and the Earth?” I told her that it is because the Heaven and the Earth were made yeish mai’ayin, something from nothing, what we call ex nihilo. So too, Hashem can cure a disease even though the doctors say that there’s nothing they can do.

In conclusion, I remember when we would daven, she would say, “Hashem please give me more life, I have so many more mitzvahs I want to do.” A lifelong friend, Esther Vago, once told me with incredulity, “Miriam told me that she’s not sure she has enough zechusim (merits)?!” But that’s the way my Rebbetzin felt. She was never sure that she’d done enough. May Hashem bless us that we should never have to fight for our lives, nor have any scares, and in the merit of our Torah and mitzvos, may Hashem grant us long life, good health, and everything wonderful. ***

I

n Megilas Rus, the posuk tells us, “Vateitzei min hamakom asher haysah shomah,” that Naomi with her two daughters in-law left from the fields of Moav. Rashi asks why the posuk has to repeat this, since it just said, “Vatashav ms’dei Moav,” that Naomi returned from the fields of Moav. Rashi answers with the fundamental theme that when a tzadik leaves a place, it is noticeable and it leaves a big hole. As Rashi eloquently elaborates, when the tzadik departs, “Pana ziva, pana hadara – Her shine is missing, her glow is gone.” Rashi in Chumash gives the same explanation when it says, “Vayeitzei Yaakov miBeir Shavah.” There also, Rashi comments that when Yaakov left, his shine and his glow were sorely missed. With the departure of my Rebbetzin to Heaven, all those who merited knowing her acutely feel the loss of her shine and glow. Recently, when I spoke at the Lag B’omer bonfire put together by HaRav Pollack, Shlit”a, in Staten Island, many people came over to me and reminisced how last year my Rebbetzin was at the bonfire. Although she came in a wheelchair, wrapped in a blanket, they remembered her excitement at being there. One woman told me how she remembered that my Rebbetzin asked her about her brother who was having a surgery the next day. It was like people remembered her glow and her warmth more than last year’s fire. A few weeks ago, I walked into the annual Bikur Cholim breakfast at the Young Israel of Staten Island. For decades, my wife would get there earlier than me as I would first say my Sunday morning Daf Yomi and arrive later. This was the first time she wasn’t there to save a seat for me, to have a hand-picked breakfast ready for me, and to greet me with a warm, “Hey Rabbi, your seat is waiting for you.” So many people commented to me how much her bright shining countenance was missing. What causes this glow, this aura, this shine? When my wife walked into the breakfast with its many hundreds of people, it wasn’t with the thought of indulging in the array of delectable treats at the breakfast display. It certainly wasn’t to show off a new dress or sparkling

25

jewelry. Truthfully, it wasn’t even so much to listen to the speeches. It was to see her many friends and find out how they were doing. Before she was even seated, she wanted to know how someone’s mother was doing, if there’d been any recent shidduchin for another one’s daughter, and how, she would ask a third, preparations were going for the chasuna. And, it would be nonstop as people vied to sit next to her. For many, many years, the porch of our bungalow at Sun Circle in South Fallsburg, was the place to be Friday night when all of the men were in shul. She wanted to know how everyone’s week was, and her sincere interest and concern about everyone else’s life truly radiated. Oh, how everyone will miss her glowing presence this coming summer. At the Tehillim group on Monday nights, where she reigned for decades and excitedly reported about this tzedaka and that opportunity to help someone, her shine is missing. Behind the mechitza at the Aguda of Staten Island, where she taught young girls what to say when they came in late, where she helped someone with a wheelchair get comfortable or a stranger feel like she was wanted, there is a gaping black hole. May we merit to ignite our own personal shine and glow by living not just for ourselves but for those around us and in that merit may Hashem bless us with long life, good health, and everything wonderful.

with the Sefer Torah! by: David Adress

O

MG! I look up and see the person doing Hagbah and the Torah is starting to wobble and his hands looks like they are about to give way. One side of the Torah scroll starts falling to the ground. I quickly leap out of my chair to catch it before it can hit the ground while yelling Noooooo! As soon as that happens I seem to be jumping from bed screaming. I have this reoccurring dream often and it varies to someone doing Hagbah or something happens by the Aaron or sometimes it’s while the Chazzan is walking towards the Amud. I am not sure if there is any deep meaning to it but I am obviously worried that the Torah will fall in some way. I get worried to the point where my heart skips a beat at times when I am watching the way people handle the Torah. I don’t think any obvious intensions are implied but I just feel the Torah needs to be handled with greater care and respect so I took it upon myself to write this article. In my opinion I feel the Torah should be handled like expensive jewelry or crystal which needs extremely delicate care. Hotzah – Taking out the Torah · When taking out the Torah from the Aaron the Shliach should have his full attention on carefully removing the Torah and ensuring other Torah’s not to be remove are still secure. · The Shliach should be using both hands. He should not have any hands on his Siddur while handling the Torah. · If someone is unsure if they can carry the Torah then they should tell the Gabbai to call upon someone else for this honor. The Hotzah to Chazan Pass · The Chazan should not be holding one hand on

26

his Siddur and one hand on the Torah. I have seen people doing the handoff where they let the Torah slowly fall into the Chazzan’s chest and shoulder because only one hand is free. Please use two hands for the pass! · If the Chazan has difficulty holding please let the Gabbai know. There is no need to take any risk. Chazan walking to the Amud and Placing the Torah · I feel the Chazan should put his Siddur down and hold the Torah with both hands. · The Torah should be laid on the Bima gently and slowly. · The Chazan or whoever takes over at this point should make sure the Torah is secure and on top of the notch and confirm Torah is secure and not moving or can Chas VESHULEM roll or fall off the Bima. Hagbah · Whoever is doing Hagbah please make sure you can do it. Tell the Gabbai if you can’t. · Please watch the Klaf when try to lift the poles over the Bima. I have seen the Klaf get caught in the lip of the Bima. · People try to lift the whole the whole Torah as a weight. Don’t! · Please don’t show off and open it so wide. Please do the minimum. (3 columns) · Use one hand on each handle of the Torah, open the scroll slightly. · Pull the Torah down so that the edge of the table is half-way between the bottom and top of the Torah scroll. Make sure Klaf is over the Lip. · Push down on the bottom handles, so that the Torah begins to be vertical. · Bend your knees and push the Torah up and straighten your legs

What'sthedifference between a WORD? By: Rabbi Reuven Chaim Klein,

A published author, studies in the world-famous Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem and writes on many topics. He received rabbinic ordination from several authorities in Jerusalem and currently lives with his wife and children in Beitar Illit, Israel.

E

Burke and Rebuke

dmund Burke (1729–1797), the father of contemporary conservatism, purportedly said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” When good people stand idly by and allow evil people to do as they please, then evil will certainly triumph. The implication of Burke’s dictum is that it is incumbent upon good people to stop the treachery of evil doers. The Torah takes this Burkian approach to the responsibility of the righteous and implores us to reprimand the wicked for their sins (Lev. 19:17). The Hebrew language collates the notion of rebuking sinners in two different words: tochachah and mussar. In the following paragraphs, we shall seek to delineate the differences between these two words and their implied approaches to reproachment. The Vilna Gaon (1720–1797) explains that tochachah is rebuke that comes from the mouth, while mussar comes from other body parts. In other words, telling somebody off for his misdeeds constitutes tochachah, while physically driving home the same point is called mussar. Thus, when a parent disciplines his child by hitting him (obviously, in a non-abusive way) or when G-d teaches somebody a lesson by afflicting him, that is called mussar. In fact, the Vilna Gaon connects the word mussar with the word yissurin (“suffering”). When G-d warns the Jews of the calamities that shall befall them should they fail to properly heed the Torah’s laws, this is called tochachach. Indeed, there are two passages in the Torah which do exactly that and each is traditionally known as the tochachach: Leviticus 26:14–43 (which is always read before Shavuot) and Deuteronomy 28:15–68 (which is always read before Rosh HaShannah). The Malbim (1809–1879) identifies three differences between the implication of the words tochachah and mussar. Those differences lie in the who, what, and why of the admonition in question. Firstly, mussar is rebuke given by a person of authority to a subordinate, while tochachah may even be rebuke exchanged amongst equals. Secondly, mussar may be carried out through corporal punishment or simply a verbal tongue-lashing, while tochachah exclusively refers admonishing another by logically proving that he has done wrong. Thirdly, mussar focuses on inculcating proper behavior for the future, while tochachah focuses on castigating a sinner for his past deeds. (This last distinction is also found in the writings of the Vilna Gaon.)

32

Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim of Breslau (1740–1814) connects the word tochachah to nochach, which means “opposite” both in terms of ideology (e.g., “Communism is the opposite of Capitalism.”) and physical location (e.g., “The car stopped opposite the red light.”). By offering his words of criticism, the rebuker opposes the rebukee, both in an ideological sense and possibly even in a physical sense, if the two meet face-to-face. Nonetheless, R. Pappenheim argues that the most effective way of rebuking another is not direct confrontation, but to “innocently” question his actions and spur a debate about their correctness. Hopefully, the ensuing discussion will allow the sinner to realize the folly of his ways in a more powerful way than if he was simply confronted with a litany of his misdoings. For this reason, the word tochachah is also related to the words hochachah (proof) and vikuach (debate). Indeed, the proper way of chastising is not simply sermonizing about fire and brimstone descending from the heavens à la Jonathan Edwards’ Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. That Puritan tract may indeed arouse emotive feelings of repentance through elaborate descriptions of the hellish fires of purgatory, but such emotions are merely fleeting bursts of contrition, unless they are backed with a logical and intellectual acceptance to do only good. Tochachah seeks to logically prove the vanity of sin and provide fodder for a rational acceptance to do only good. On the other hand, R. Pappenheim writes that the word mussar is related to the word le-hasir (“to remove” or “to separate”). This is either because mussar seeks to “displace” or “remove” an offender from the path of sin within which he had been entrenched or because it clearly “delineates” and “separates” between what is right and what is wrong. Alternatively, the word mussar is related to the word assur (which literally means “tied”, although it colloquially means “forbidden”) because the rebuker seeks to show the rebukee that he is “bound” to certain expectations of right and wrong. Rabbi Yaakov Tzvi Mecklenburg (1785–1865) similarly explains that mussar is related to “tying” because it gives a person the ability to tie down his evil inclination and keep his illicit desires in check.
