On Thursday, February 15, 2018, the Rabbinical Alliance of America/Igud HaRabbonim held its Rosh Chodesh Adar Conference and Suedah. Rabbi Sol Shemesh from Staten Island gave a Dvar Torah in honor of his father’s Yahrzeit, HaGaon HaChacham Ben HaGaon HaChacham Ezra Shemesh, ZT’L. May his Neshomah have an Aleyah.

Rabbi Joseph Salamon, vice-president, RAA/IGUD; Rabbi Yaakov Klass, presidium member, RAA/IGUD; Rabbi Sol Shemesh; Rabbi Mendy Mirocznik, executive vice-president, RAA/IGUD.

Rabbi Sol Shemesh

Dear Members of the Staten Island Chaverim,

Rabbi Mendy Mirocznik, executive vice-president, RAA/IGUD; Rabbi Sol Shemesh; Rabbi Aharon Zeev, Aur Torah Sephardic Minyan, Staten Island, New York.

Monday February 19th, 2018

My father, Rabbi Dr. Joseph Sungolowsky of Kew Gardens Hills is so grateful to all of you in your extreme display of Chessed for his brother the niftar, Leon ( Yehuda Leib) Sungolowsky Z"L. Yesterday you displayed tremendous Ahavas Yisroel for the niftar who had no children and was looked after my father for his entire life ( 84 years). Your selflessness in giving up a regular Sunday afternoon and devoting your time to a member of klal yisroel that had no relationship to you shows what incredible individuals you are! You have taught us by your heroic yet humble actions what it means to do Chessed shel Emes. May Hashem grant you all long, healthy lives with brachos, nachas and through your mitzvos bring the Geula speedily!! Warm Regards and With Gratitude, Elisheva ( Sungolowsky) Garrel niece of the niftar Jay S. Garrel Joseph ( aveil- brother) and Honey Sungolowsky

Progressive Parenting Lynne Stone, R.N.

The Jewish family has been renowned for being two-parent, mother a homemaker or employed outside, and father working, learning or both. Shabbos, holidays and mealtime have been incomparable time of togetherness in spirituality and sensitivity. The classic extended family has both visions of aunts, uncles, cousins, and others in the neighborhood, always available for a shoulder to lean on and a snack to savor. But today, more than ever, these cherished moments have been challenged because of conflict and confusion brought on by death, divorce and disability, as well as financial and family fragility. Describing the ”Superman syndrome” in Orthodox Judaism, we know it has not evolved out of a kinship with the feminist movement. Rather out of the necessity of struggling in juggling schedules as an observant parent, partner, student, employee, cook, cleaner and the like. Being a “housewife,” officially titled “ Domestic Engineer,” has become almost an obsolete word in too many homes. The cliché, “quality, not quantity is what counts,” in terms of time spent with our children has fast become the rule rather than the exception for many of us. The scenario of grandma having the choice of an open house for weekday baking and babysitting increasingly unrealistic as she remains, reenters or is introduced to the workplace. Even in the best of circumstances, no one can guarantee competent, confident, stress- free children. Yet, we have an obligation to try. The following are some suggestions to enable parents to reach a goal of nurturing healthy, happy and responsible children: Strive for an educated awake, aware and shared child-birth; try to experience early parent-infant bonding; Breast-feed for proven increased physical and emotional benefits for both parent and child; lots of holding and eye-to-eye contact, especially throughout the irreplaceable and impressionable first few months of life; smile often for good looks and chemical release; tell your child from day one how beautiful/handsome and smart s/he is, in order to build self-esteem; read,

speak and sing to the child, from newborn through adolescence, to sharpen the mind and senses; yes, you can just “like” something that your child does, but let her/him know that your love is unconditional; beware of sending inappropriate mixed messages, such as the child being good or bad, or rewarding then depriving; be patient to listen and not just hear. In general, set a good example and then you can expect a similar response. This entails a wide range of situations that include: good personal hygiene and household cleanliness; dignity in speech and appearance; politeness — “Please,” “thank you,” and “you’re welcome.”; acknowledge errors in judgment as well as minor and major mistakes — “You are right. I am sorry!”; whenever possible give the child a chance to participate in discussions and decision-making; teach the wise use of time, energy, and money; discipline with love. Verbal and physical striking can be demeaning and demoralizing. These messages lose effectiveness when they become a way of life rather than a rare retort; advise and seek advice selectively; if home care or day care is needed, choose carefully. The surrogate should be willing and able to follow your ideas and ideals. Treat a child respectfully because you get what you give. The expression “prophecy fulfillment” should be remembered by every parent. A child’s present and future behavior can be influenced by labeling him. How much nicer to be able to say “you are a wonderful child,” as opposed to “you’re always causing problems.” Beware of expressing negative explanations and expectations from babyhood on. Feel and show the meaning of warm touch and words — “I love you and I am proud of you.” Let our Yiddishe Kinderlach be surrounded by kind actions, reactions and deeds to one’s family, friends and the environment. Children should know that they are important to us and our world. From infancy to adulthood, if we give our family a conscientious upbringing, then we will help develop caring and sharing children. Isn’t it wonderful to know that these fine attributes will then be passed down from generation to generation!!

THE ONLY HEIMISHE BI-WEEKLY SHOPPER FOR STATEN ISLAND

NEWS

S

Police officials, elected officials and community leaders gather in unity at the COJO CommUNITY security meeting.

TATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- NYPD brass and borough officials sounded off on February 6, 2018, discussing the borough’s heroin epidemic. The symposium was held in front of a few hundred people at the Jewish Community Center in Seaview, as part of a community safety meeting hosted by the Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island.

ommUNITY meeting was novel because COJO also coordinated the Security Meeting with Faith Base Groups and civic organizations of Staten Island. A look at the packed standing room crowd reflected people of all walks of life is testimony of COJO’s concern for the welfare and wellbeing of all of Staten Island. The audience was addressed by NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill, Staten Island Borough President James Oddo, Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Councilman Steve Matteo, Assembly Member Nicole Malliotakis, Mendy Mirocznik, President of COJO, Scott Maurer, CEO and Executive Vice-President of COJO, Chief Nilda Hofmann, the newly appointed NYPD Chief of the Community Affairs Bureau, Captain Mark C. Molinari, of the Hate Crimes Unit, Assistant Chief Kenneth Corey, the newly appointed Borough Commander of Patrol Borough Staten Island and by Galit Peleg, Director for Public Diplomacy at the Israeli Consulate New York. Rabbi Alvin Kass, NYPD Chief Chaplain and Imam Dr. Tahir Kukaj, of the Albanian Cultural Center made the invocations. Also in attendance was Dennis Quirk, President of the New York State Court Officers Association, New York City Civil Court Judge Susan Quirk, Jeffery Ward, Staten Island Trustee of the Detective Endowment Association, Richmond County Public Administrator Anthony Catalano, FDNY Borough Commander Richard Howe, FDNY Chief Brian Gorman, David Pollack, Associate Executive Director and Director of Public Policy and Jewish Security, Jewish Community Relations Council of New York and the Knights of Pythias

represented by Errol Lewis, Philip Feigel and Jeffery Freez. Also present was the borough’s top NYPD brass such as the Commanding Officers of the Island’s Police Precincts, Deputy Inspector Joseph Simonetti from the 120, Deputy Inspector Matthew Harrington from the 121, Deputy Inspector Ebony Washington from the 122, Captain Kenneth Noonan from the 123, Inspector Thomas Delahanty from Patrol Borough Staten Island, Inspector Vincent J. Patti from Patrol Borough Staten Island, Captain Allen G. Larson from Patrol Borough Staten Island, Captain Andrew Hillery from Strategic Response Unit as well as other representatives from Patrol Borough Staten Island and One Police Plaza. Maurer, who moderated the panel discussion portion of the evening, began the program by welcoming all those in attendance and stated, “the importance of the COJO food pantry in working together with the community and the NYPD in helping to foster better community relations.” Maurer added, “that through pantry interaction and helping the community COJO and the NYPD has touched the lives of thousands of Staten Islander’s. It is through this interaction that we have helped build bridges of friendship and trust.” Mirocznik, congratulated Commissioner O’Neill and the NYPD for brining crime down to a low that New York City has not witnessed since the 1950’s and stated, “that thanks to Commissioner O’Neill’s vision of bringing together our elected officials, civic leaders and members of the Clergy we have been able to forge a partnership of people committed to public safety and a better Staten Island.” Mirocznik praised District Attorney McMahon and Borough President Oddo for their leadership in jointly working together in fighting crime and in enhancing the quality of life for all Staten Islanders.” Borough President James Oddo applauded the police department’s effort to engage with the community and give

locals an opportunity to voice their concerns. “When the police commissioner himself comes to Staten Island, and all top brass is here, and you have a chance to listen to them, to talk with them -- I think it’s a good night,” Oddo said. O’Neil thanked Mirocznik, Maurer and thanked COJO for being, “a great community partner of the NYPD” and he further acknowledged, “the staunch support that COJO has for the NYPD”. O’Neill also gave a run-down of the agencies and joint task forces combating the issue, from federal authorities to police precincts on Staten Island. O’Neill credited the officers serving under him with the city’s continued crime reduction, and said he didn’t see why the trend shouldn’t continue, if everyone works together.

“I know what they do,” he said. “I lived that life for a long time.” Despite applauding the lower crime rates, officials noted the need to do more to address the borough’s heroin crisis. Last year saw 86 overdose deaths on the Island, making Staten Island the only county in New York that saw a decline in overdose deaths, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon said. All members of law enforcement said the main goals in fighting the drug epidemic are prosecuting dealers and helping addicts get the treatment they need. “We’re going to go up the food chain” O’Neill said, about the higher-level dealers the NYPD is targeting. Corey, who has lived in the borough for over 20 years, expressed that his focus is working to address the issue. “As a Staten Islander, as a father of two young children, this is a top priority for us,” he said.

Gala Siddur Presentation at Staten Island Hebrew Academy

T

here was much excitement at Staten Island Hebrew Academy Monday February 12th. That was when the proud 2nd graders received their first siddurim. The auditorium was full of parents, grandparents and friends. The event was graced with the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Trenk,Rabbi Vashavsky who with Rabbi Uzhansky handed each student their personalized Siddur. Rabbi Chezky Dershowitz, Rabbi Yehuda Dershowitz and Rabbi Chaim Nosson Segal. The program opened with a warm welcome from Rabbi Yehuda Dershowitz of Lakewood, N.J. Rabbi Dershowitz told the story of a young child who was bullied by his sisters and prayed to G-d for a baby brother to be born on his birthday. This young child was not yet religious. A few months later his mother had a baby boy,but the baby was not born on his birthday. The young child asked his Bar mitzva Tutor why the baby couldn’t be born on his birthday. Together they looked up the 12 year olds Hebrew birthday and sure enough the baby was born on his brothers Hebrew birthday. The child was so amazed and realized there must be a G-d. This child is now a world renowned lecturer on Judaism. Rav Chaim Nosson Segal Shilta,Rav of New Springville Jewish Centre of Staten Island spoke next. Rabbi Segal told the story of a little boy playing alone near the sea, when asked why he was playing all alone and not with the other children further away, the child said he is waiting for the ship to pass by and the captain will wave to him.The person said “there is only one ship that passes by” the child said “True, but my father is the captain of the ship.” Rabbi Segal said “Hashem is our father, no matter what situation we are in we always call our

father. Prayer is our weapon.” Rabbi Segal then asked the children to recite Modeh ani and shma. He told these 2nd graders that in 20 years they will be the leaders of the Jewish people. The children then performed an adorable song and rhyme presentation explaining why, when and how we daven. This was followed by an outburst of song and dance led by the renowned Rabbi Moti Katz of JEP and Shia Solomon on the Casio. Rabbi Katz and Mr. Solomon have honored SIHA by joining the Siddur Presentations for the past three years. Rabbi Katz and Mr. Solomon did an incredible job of getting everyone involved in the Adar spirit. If not for SIHA many of these precious nishamos would be public school students. SIHA was a dream come true for visionaries like Paul Trenk and Dr. Marvin Schick. These trailblazers of education realized there was a strong need for a school like SIHA. They were bothered by the fact that their Jewish Russian brothers and sisters living in Staten Island knew very little about their heritage and background as Jews. They felt a school must be created to service these children and teach them what it means to be a Jew. The students at SIHA are proud Jews and many of the students bring home the lessons they have been taught and teach their families what they have learned. SIHA makes every Yom Tov come alive with a Succos Party, Chanukah performance,Purim event for children and parents to enjoy together. There are shabbatons throughout the year.

SIHA is under the capable guidance of Rabbi Shlomo Uzhansky dean,Dr. Chana Uzhansky Educational Rabbi Chaim Nosson Segal Rav of Supervisor and beloved principals Mrs. Dena New Springville Jewish Centre showing Khukhashvilli and Mrs. Alexandra Slonim. SIHA is students a 400 year old Siddur containing located at 3495 Richmond Rd. S.I, N.Y. the same tefilot we say today.

Part 5

Remembering Rebbetzin Miriam Libby Weiss, Zt”l, Zy”a Part One By Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss

L

et me share with you how it all started between Miriam Libby and me. My Hebrew birthday is the 12th of Av. On my 21st birthday I went to my Rebbe, Rav Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, zy”a, and asked him if I should start dating. And, he told me no. (It is important to remember that this was not a general psak-halachic decision, but rather specific to me). So, when I was 22, I again asked him on my Hebrew birthday if I should start dating and once again he told me no. On my 23rd birthday, I was already inpatient, having friends who were already married with children. I think I was a little pushy and I said something like, “I should start dating by now, right?” And he gave me kind of a pareve answer, like, “Nu nu.” But I didn’t pick up on it. And that year I went out with a dozen young ladies to no avail. On my 24th birthday, I asked him for a blessing and he gave me a hearty wish to become a chossen. At the same time, I had just come back from a trip to Eretz Yisrael, where I went to the Amuka, the grave of Rav Yonason ben Uziel, which is supposed to be a segula to become a chossen. Now, fasten your seat belts for what happened next. I was in Camp Yeshiva of Staten Island, in Kerhonkson, New York, together with Rav Moshe. Families would come up for the weekend to spend time in the proximity of Rav Moshe, the beloved leader of world Jewry. One such family was the Saftlos family. They sent up their provisions ahead of time with the Zines family. The Zines’ vehicle caught on fire as it arrived at the yeshiva camp and all of the Saftlos’ possessions got burnt. Mrs. Malky Saftlos has a best friend in the yesheiva, Rabbetzin Yehudis Neuman. She was distressed for her friend, and went to Jamesway to replace what was lost. At that time, my father, A”H, Mr. Heshy Weiss, managed the Sheraton Regal Inn in Piscataway, New Jersey, which was owned by his brother, Helu Weiss, OBM. I got from my father blankets, pillows, and towels for the entire family.

24

At the same time, as I was sort of in charge of the medical needs in the yeshiva, I administered First Aid to one of the boys who got burned in the car fire. Mrs. Saftlos, who had observed me in the past bringing food to Rav Moshe, was so moved by the blankets, etc., that she decided to try to make a shidduch for me. She had seen Miriam Libby when she was a second grade teacher in Torah v’Daas and knew about her reputation as a Baalas Chesed. So, she went to Rebbetzin Neuman who knew me and the two friends conspired and the rest is history. Thus, a car had to explode so that acts of chesed could be connected and, as the saying goes, “MeiHashem yatzah hadovor – From Hashem came this match.” We should always realize that when we put ourselves out for people in need, Hashem will repay us magnificently as was the case in this match made in Heaven. In the merit of giving, may Hashem bless us with long life, good health, and everything wonderful. What'sthedifference between a WORD? By: Rabbi Reuven Chaim Klein,

A published author, studies in the world-famous Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem and writes on many topics. He received rabbinic ordination from several authorities in Jerusalem and currently lives with his wife and children in Beitar Illit, Israel.

T

Rabbi of Robbers

he Amoraic sage Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, also known as Reish Lakish, serves as the quintessential baal teshuvah, as he transformed from being a highway robber to becoming a master Torah Scholar. The Talmud (Bava Metzia 84a) relates that one time, Reish Lakish insinuated to his teacher and brother-in-law Rabbi Yochanan that the latter did not truly do him any service in bringing him to teshuvah because, “There [amongst my robber friends], they called me ‘Rabbi’ and here [in the Beit Midrash], they call me ‘Rabbi’.” This cryptic statement begs the question: In what way can the leader of bandits be called a “Rabbi”? And what does the word “Rabbi” even mean? When the Bible refers to the master of a slave, the word commonly used is adon (and its various derivatives). A special form of that word (Adonai) is also used in reference to G-d, for He serves as the Master of the Universe and all of creation are His slaves. Targum Onkelos consistently translates the common noun adon into Aramaic as ribbon. That Aramaic word is an honorific form of the Aramaic word rav, which, again also means “master”. Indeed, the Mishnah typically uses the word rav to refer to the master of a slave, so we have now come a full-circle. Interestingly, the word rav actually appears several times in the Bible, but always in construct form and hyphenated to other words, such as rav-tabachim (Master Executioner, i.e. an army’s general), rav-hachovel (Master of the Rope, i.e. a ship’s captain), and raveihamelech (Masters of the King, i.e. a king’s officers). The word Rabbi is the Anglicized form of the word Rebbi which means “my Rav” or, in pure English, “my master”. In the context of a Torah Scholar or even a lay observant Jew, his “master” is his teacher of Torah. On the other hand, a thief ’s “master” is the leader of his delinquent gang. The Talmud (Brachot 60b) records the words to a blessing which we recite daily in the morning prayers. In that prayer, we thank G-d for returning to us our soul which had temporarily exited our bodies, as we slumbered through the night. We refer to G-d in that prayer as ribbon kol ha-maasim, adon kol ha-nishamot which means, “Master (ribbon) of all creation, Master (adon) of all souls”.

32

The Vilna Gaon points out that in this context, we use two different words to refer to G-d being a “master”. In the first clause, we call Him a ribbon and in the second, an adon. What is the difference between these two usages? The Vilna Gaon explains that the first clause refers to G-d’s eminence in the realm of the physical, action-oriented existence. Therefore, in that clause, we use the Aramaic word for “master” because the Aramaic language is connected to the outer, surface-level of existence. In the second clause, however, we refer to G-d’s dominion over the spiritual, transcendental realm of existence. That deeper plane of reality is epitomized by the Hebrew language because both penetrate the essence of creation. For this reason, in the second clause, we refer to G-d’s mastery of creation using the Hebrew word for master—adon. (Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, a leader of contemporary Jewry, notes that in this context, the Aramaic clause precedes the Hebrew one, but he does not elaborate on the significance of this observation.) Until now, we have worked with the assumption that although the words adon and ribbon/rav both mean “master”, the elementary difference between the two is that the former is Hebrew, while the latter is Aramaic. Rabbi Baruch Aryeh ha-Levi Fischer of Yeshivas Chasan Sofer in Brooklyn, however, suggests another, thematic way of differentiating between these two words. The word adon is a title borne by anyone who is a master— once someone becomes a master he can always be called an adon. In contrast, the word ribbon/rav is specifically used when referring to the relationship between a master and the protégé in his charge (be him a slave, a student, or an apprentice). Thus, the word adon is all-encompassing and serves as an epithet assumed by a master in all contexts, while rav/ribbon is only used under specific conditions. Based on this, Rabbi Fischer explains that Adonai— which is derived from adon—is considered a name of G-d, who is the all-encompassing Master of the Universe, while ribbon/rav is not His name, per se, but only a description of His role vis-à-vis specific elements of creation.
