enifer Lewis: Well I was born and raised in a small town on the outskirts of St.Louis Missouri called Kinloch. I’m the baby of seven children. I came from a very poverty stricken area, I eventually discovered that I was an alpha female as I became president of my class, and captain of the cheerleader leading squad. I graduated from Webster University and majored in Theater Arts. I ended up on Broadway in less than 11 days after graduating college. I was in my first Broadway show with Gregory Hines. So that was my launching pad. Continue Page 9

Using NASDAQ data

You likely already know how overcrowded and abusive the US prison system is, and you probably are also aware that the US has more people in prison than even China or Russia. In this age of privatization, of course, it’s also not surprising that many of the detention centers are not actually operated by the government, but by for-profit companies. So clearly, some people are making lots and lots of money off the booming business of keeping human beings in cages.

Companies Funding Prisons: Where’s Your Dollar Going ?

The Vanguard Group and Fidelity Investments are America’s top two 401(k) providers. They are also two of the private prison industry’s biggest investors. George Zoley Another prison profiteer who presumably has no moral qualms about the business is George Zoley, the CEO of GEO Group and the second-biggest investor in the incarceration industry. Henri Wedell The individual who’s invested the most in private prisons is Henri Wedell. The report, published, identifies the six main banks that have played the largest role in financing debt issued by CoreCivic and The GEO Group, thereby enabling them to maintain and grow their businesses: Wells Fargo, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, BNP Paribas, SunTrust, and U.S. Bancorp. The Corrections Corporation of America launched the era of private prisons in 1983, when it opened an immigration detention center in an former motel in Houston, Texas. Today the Nashville-based company houses more than 66,000 inmates, making it the country’s second-largest private prison company. In 2015, it reported $1.9 billion in revenue and

“Wells Fargo is at the top of the list,” Aguilar Shank told TakePart. “They have showed up every time GEO or [CoreCivic] was trying to sell bonds—they’ve long been a target for the prison divestment movement.” Although Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan are largely responsible for the drug-war policies that caused the prison population to skyrocket, Bill Clinton was a “tough on crime” president who continued their ideas. And Vice President Joe Biden was a principal player in the Clinton era’s crime policies—he wrote the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which, among other things, called for $9.7 billion in increased funding for prisons and stiffer penalties for drug offenders.

CCA and other prison companies have written “occupancy guarantees” into their contracts, requiring states to pay a fee if they cannot provide a certain number of inmates. CCA’S biggest investor: The Vanguard Group, the country’s second-largest money management firm, holds 14 percent of CCA stock, valued at $447 million as of late 2015. How many foreign owned nail salons employ Americans or patronize American owned businesses within the communities they do business in? Has it ever crossed your mind why you never see Americans working in foreign owned nail salons? Have you ever wondered if the salon owner(s) or any of its staffpatornized businesses within the community? I was just sitting at the nail salon.. As I was sitting there I counted all the women in the room (so I got to wondering) “Exactly how much money this nail salon would make on an average day?”

Job Security The Future Lawrence Awareness Editor by

Technology is probably the strongest force that will influence the labor markets of tomorrow, but many other factors will play major roles too. For example, in much of the developed world, the population is rapidly aging. By 2050, the number of people on Earth over the age of 60 is anticipated to more than double. And the number of people over the age of 80 is expected to more than triple.4 But technology may continue to extend our lifespans, which will amplify that already-significant trend. Aside from human aging and longevity, the future is also likely to be transformed by factors such as the growing “sharing economy,” the rise of freelance and project-based work, the expanded use of blockchain technology for economic transactions, and an exponential increase in data collection related to almost all areas of our lives. So, from a cultural, demographic, and economic perspective, some of the most promising careers for the future may include occupations like the following examples:

Nurse Practitioner Because of an aging and longer-living population, the health care system may have trouble keeping up with the growing influx of patients. Many regions could experience severe shortages of doctors. They’ll need more non-physician health professionals with the ability to diagnose and treat patients with various acute and chronic conditions. Registered nurses who get the right kind of advanced education at the graduate level can become nurse practitioners and help fill that void. In 2016, median yearly pay for nurse practitioners was $100,910. And between 2014 and 2024, they could benefit from about 74,700 job openings.

Health Services Manager The health care sector may undergo more changes over the coming decades than most other industries. Every health and medical organization will need highly knowledgeable leaders and managers to help them adapt to legal, regulatory, and technological changes while still improving the quality and efficiency of the services they deliver. Health and medical services managers earned median yearly pay of $96,540 in 2016. And about 140,500 job openings may become available in this field over the decade that ends in 2024.

(unemployment rates in particular communities is through the roof) yet the nail salons in the community don’t HIRE those in the community. I got more to share on this subject but for now - I just have to say “It’s time to rethink how we spend our dollars in the com-

IS BEING RACIST A MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE? the ages of 20 and 23 has been shown to be a predictive factor for anxiety and depression up to age 32.10 Such levels of mental distress can create an environment that is conducive to unhealthy coping methods.11 With little access to quality medical care and treatment, alcohol and drugs are available to fill the void to cope with stress and pain. These delusions are usually of a negative or pejorative nature, but also may be grandiose in content.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKG Positive thinking: Stop negative self-talk to reduce stress Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health. mental health difficulties, such as depression or anxiety, and physical health consequences, such as pain and fatigue. Depression and Anxiety Racial discrimination is more closely associated with the development of lifetime depressive and mood disorders.8 The national rate of occurrence for depression is 6.7 percent. In the study led by Robinson in Ferguson, Missouri, 43 percent of the community sample and 33 percent of the police sample met the criteria for depression.4 In Wisconsin, a statewide survey reported alarming rates of suicidal ideation among black high school students. While 4 percent of white students reported that they attempted suicide at least once, within the past year, 16 percent of black students reported suicide attempts.9 Experiencing racial discrimination as a black man between

in the DSM V—the manual containing all anointed psychiatric conditions, some experts believe that extreme racism should be. Oxford psychiatrists for instance did include “pathological bias” in their own version, the Oxford Handbook. of Personality Disorders, last revised in 2012. Pathological bias is defined as extreme racist and supremacist views that could lead one to commit acts of violence against a person or

persons of another race. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) decided not to include extreme racism in the DSM V, also updated in 2012, because otherwise perfectly normal, lawabiding people in America might be implicated. The APA was also worried that if it classified racism, it would send the message that racists couldn’t control their beliefs, and so they would do little to change them.

Indeed, some studies show that personality traits such as optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of your health and well-being. The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is associated with many health benefits. If you tend to be pessimistic, don’t despair — you can learn positive thinking skills.

If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you’re likely an optimist — someone who practices positive thinking.

Understanding positive thinking and self-talk

Lower rates of depression

Positive thinking doesn’t mean that you keep your head in the sand and ignore life’s less pleasant situations. Positive thinking just means that you approach unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way. You think the best is going to happen, not the worst.

Greater resistance to the common cold

Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information.

The health benefits of positive thinking Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:

Increased life span Lower levels of distress Better psychological and physical well-being Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress It’s unclear why people who engage in positive thinking experience these health benefits. One theory is that having a positive outlook enables you to cope better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body. It’s also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activity, follow a healthier diet, and don’t smoke or drink alcohol in excess.

After all, they are essentially data brokers. So more data is worth more money, even if some of it is being incorrectly reported. Engagement marketing, sometimes called “experiential marketing”, “event marketing”, “on-ground marketing”, “live marketing”, “participation marketing”, or “special events” is a marketing strategy that directly engages consumers and invites and encourages them to participate in the evolution of a brand.

When you consider that 49% of folks create mobile video at branded events -- 39% of which is shared on Twitter -- it makes sense to incorporate a digital element. A branded hashtag, for example, can get people talking about the experience. SAVVY WAYS TO FINANCE YOUR BUSINESS Finding financing in any economic climate can be challenging, whether you’re looking for startup funds, capital to expand or money to hold on through the tough times. But given our current state of affairs, securing funds is as tough as ever. To help you find the money you need, we’ve compiled a guide on 10 financing techniques and what you should know when pursuing them. CONSIDER FACTORING Factoring is a finance method where a company sells its receivables at a discount to get cash up-front. It’s often used by companies with poor credit or by businesses such as apparel manufacturers, which have to fill orders long before they get paid. However, it’s an expensive way to raise funds. Companies selling receivables generally pay a fee that’s a percentage of the total amount. If you pay a 2 percent fee to get funds 30 days in advance, it’s equivalent to an annual interest rate of about 24 percent. For that reason, the business has gotten a bad reputation over the years. That said, the economic downturn has forced companies to look to alternative financing methods and companies like The Receivables Exchange are trying to make factoring more competitive. The exchange allows companies to offer their receivables to dozens of factoring companies at once, along with hedge funds, banks, and other finance companies. These lenders will bid on the invoices, which can be sold in a bundle or one at a time. TRY CROWDFUNDING A crowdfunding site like Kickstarter.com can be a fun and effective way to raise money for a relatively low cost, creative project. You’ll set a goal for how money you’d like to raise over a period of time, say, $1,500 over 40 days. Your friends, family, and strangers then use the site to pledge money. Kickstarter has funded roughly 1,000 projects, from rock albums to documentary films

since its launch last year. But keep in mind, this isn’t about long-term funding. Rather, it’s supposed to facilitate the asking for and giving of support for single, one-off ideas. Usually, project-creators offer incentives for pledging, such as if you give a writer $15, you’ll get a book in return. There’s no long-term return on investment for supporters and not even the ability to write off donations for tax purposes. Still, that hasn’t stopped close to 100,000 people from pledging to Kickstarter projects. PLEDGE SOME OF YOUR FUTURE EARNINGS

Add experience: Seeing some gray hair on your management team will help ease investors’ fears about your company’s ability to deal with a tough economy. Even an unpaid, but highly experienced adviser could add to your credibility. Don’t be a fad-follower: Did you start your company because you are truly passionate about your idea or because you want to cash in on the latest trend? Angels can spot the difference and won’t give much attention to those whose companies are essentially get-rich-quick schemes.

Dope Soul: Jenifer Lewis:The Mother of Black Hollywood By Cedric Nettles Exposure Magazine sat down with this living legend and discussed her memoir The Mother of Black Hollywood which discusses her triumphs over bi-polar disorder and sex addiction. She also had a special message for former President Barrack Obama and everyone out there trying to find a purpose to their pain. Exposure Magazine: Hello Jenifer, could you give us an overview of your early beginnings to where you are now? Jenifer Lewis: Well I was born and raised in a small town on the outskirts of St.Louis Missouri called Kinloch. Exposure Magazine: You are so open about your issues with mental illness in your

memoir could you tell us about what was going on? Jenifer Lewis: During my 20s I had a sex addiction, I was acting out with depression and mania for many years. When I got to L.A. and the AIDS epidemic was at its height,I pretty much had a nervous breakdown. Exposure Magazine: I find it fascinating you were afraid that if you received treatment it would take away your edge. Could you discuss what brought you to the point that you knew you had to get help? Jenifer Lewis: A good girlfriend looked at me and saw that it was something wrong and suggested I go to therapy. Of course I protested that and was like come on girl I’m Jenifer Lewis ain’t nothing wrong with me. Well something was wrong, I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and realized I had a sex addiction. I was self medicating with alcohol, cigarettes, and sabotaging my career until I realized in fact the abuse from my childhood and all the damage I continued doing to myself was the real problem. So I

spent 17 years, twice a week in therapy, because that friend that took my hand that day said “There is no greater journey than the journey within”. That sounded exciting to me. So I took that journey. After 68 movies, 396 episodic television shows, 4 Broadway shows, and concerts all over the world, my greatest accomplishment amongst all of that is the sole fact I took care of my inner being so that I can in fact enjoy the success I am having right now with The Mother of Black Hollywood and Blackish. So there it is darling in a nutshell, it has been quite a journey and bi-polar disorder ain’t no joke, it took years to work through that pain and all of the chaos and drama I created in my life unnecessarily. But I obviously needed the help because it has brought me to where I am now which is a 61-year-old woman with a big smile on her face. Jenifer is very passionate about human rights and anything in this world that would bring justice and equality. She weighs in on the current President Donald Trump and praises former President Obama’s leadership and impact on America.

Jenifer Lewis: We have to stand up and address these issues...We have an administration that would take the air we breath from your grandchildren. You have to know who you are in this. There is only one thing there is no opposite to. ‘I am’. There is no opposite to that. When you walk into a room lead with love, then when you get there what can touch you? What could bother you? If you lead with love, who will stand against you, nobody can. So lead with love. I am writing a song right now. It starts ‘You can’t erase what Obama did and said because he led with love.’ How the f—k you going to erase that? How the f—k you going to erase love with hate? I don’t think so. That is not the universal law fool...You don’t get to win...And hate. There is no winning with that. We all know what is going to will out in the end.. You got people in the White House …Shit honey…These people that are in charge right now? Satan is jealous of them. Satan is jealous of Donald Trump.

Did you look in the mirror and take responsibility for your choices? What are you doing with your life? It’s about doing the work, and giving back, and taking care of yourself. And that is what I did in this book, I laid my burdens down. Now I have a big smile on my face, that’s success. Stop hurting yourself over and over and over again because somebody hurt you. Be nice and kind. Kind is such a beautiful word. Be kind to yourself and it just spills over. Take care of you... Take care of you. Don’t go out there trying to help folks that don’t want to be helped that’s a waste of time. If they asked, then you step in. You have to ask. It didn’t say sit down let me talk to you,I ain’t going to hear a f—king thing you had to say, nobody cares. If the person doesn’t ask you, they are not even listening. So why you talking and going on and on and on when they are not listening. You have to ask and then it is given, otherwise child please and go on somewhere...

SIT YOUR ASS DOWN AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Quit trying to save the world. You save the world when you save yourself. Exposure Magazine: On behalf of Exposure Magazine I want to thank you for sitting down with us and sharing your journey. Best wishes for your book and career Jenifer. Jenifer Lewis: Thank you it was my pleasure. _____________________________________ _________________________________ OTHER QUOTES FROM INTERVIEW “You get tired of being sick and tired...That’s when people change.” -Jenifer Lewis “We have to pay attention to our physical, mental, and emotional selves.” -Jenifer Lewis “Put down the phones, and go and journal...So you can get your feelings out of yourself so that you can make a difference in this world.”-Jenifer Lewis “I’m for all causes that bring joy to the word, and peace to the next generation.”Jenifer Lewis

Purchase Today Exposure Magazine: What is the key to making yourself happy? Jenifer Lewis: We have to do our best to be happy on our way to happy. You can’t get in your car and drive to this mountain and say...Oooh...I am going to climb the mountain today to feel good. Start feeling good as soon as you think about it. Think about things that make you happy...What makes you happy? That’s what you concentrate on. A day’s gift to you. I mean dear, I am sitting in California right now, it’s gorgeous. I’m going to get up, Blackish is done filming, the wrap party was last night, I’M GOING TO THE BEACH TODAY, I AM GOING TO FEED MY SOUL. I am going to be appreciative of this wonderful job, this wonderful show that is leading the resistance right now. It’s bringing education and entertainment together, and all the modern day issues

of our time. It’s speaking to police brutality, the N word, disfunction in family relations, race relations. I’m honored to be on a show like Blackish and I am certainly grateful that I went and took care of myself so I can enjoy the fruit of my labor. Why have all this success and not be healthy to enjoy it? Exposure Magazine: You seem so fearless in everything you do. Do you have a message for anyone living in fear? Jenifer Lewis: Be afraid if you must, but feel that fear, and do it anyway...C’mon now... Yeah I’m scared , but I am going through this bitch anyway. I’m going through anyway.

Summer Family Fruity Grills

Sometimes on these hot, muggy summer days, even firing up the outdoor grill can seem impossible. Keep the grilling spirit alive in a remarkably cooler with this DIY Watermelon Grill with Fruit Kabobs. Summer’s perfect fruit comes in many shapes and sizes, but for this crowd-pleaser, a round watermelon about the size of a small soccer ball is ideal. Use a melon-baller to hollow it out, saving the sweet spheres for pretty, petite fruit kabobs. Wooden skewers pushed through the halved melon create the grill’s grates, while blackberries or other dark-hued berries play the role of the charcoal underneath. Use stalks of celery or carrots to fashion a base, so the grill stands upright, and chop chunks of your favorite fruits (like pineapples, strawberries or peaches) to complete the fruit kabobs on top. It’s a sure-fire way to heat things up for summer – no open flames, smokers or grilling tools required.

Thinking about sailing the seven seas with Disney Cruise Line? When it comes to cruising it pays to plan ahead. Booking your cruise as early as possible allows for greater flexibility when it comes to rates, sailing dates and staterooms. Unlike booking a Walt Disney World vacation package where discounts are released closer to your arrival date, the best deals for Disney Cruises are always further out.

KID MOGUL The business: Selling lemonade became a multi-million dollar venture for Mikaila, who is 11 years old. She inked an $11 million deal with Whole Foods for her BeeSweet lemonade, which is based off her grandmother’s recipe and doesn’t use sugar or artificial sweeteners. Press mentions: Before the Whole Foods deal, Mikaila got $60,000 on Shark Tank to fund her venture — which is probably considerably more than you ever got for your lemonade stand.

Drive It

Tesla Review I’m just waking up after last night’s Tesla Semi and next gen Roadster Event and it feels like a dream in a lot of ways. If you would have told me yesterday that there would be an EV that met any of the following specs, I would have said “Vaporware!” Keep in mind these are base specs (!!) and the Founder’s Series car, which will take advantage of technologies gained in the 3 years before production, will somehow be better than:

Acceleration 0-60 mph: 1.9 sec Acceleration 0-100 mph: 4.2 sec Acceleration 1/4 mile: 8.8 sec Top Speed: Over 250 mph Wheel Torque: 10,000 Nm Mile Range: 620 miles Seating: 4+ trunk

It’s over. It’s. Just. Over. I’ve said it before but there is no way to dispute it anymore. Electric vehicle engines are superior to internal combustion. Full stop. You can still talk about style, suspension, handling, interior, features, financing or anything else on a car but as far as engine power, there is no longer any comparison. Electric has won. If the Model 3 launch was D-Day for electric vehicles, I think the new Roadster is victory day. Let’s get into the numbers here.

621 MILE RANGE?

How did Tesla make such a leap to around double its high-end model range? This car is a huge step up in a lot of ways but isn’t impossible given what we know about EVs and Tesla’s trajectory. When I got in the vehicle for a test ride, the first thing I noticed was that you are sitting pretty flat like the original Roadster but significantly higher up off the ground. If I had to guess, I would imagine that Tesla has stacked two layers of 2070 cells between the axles. That’s 2x 100kWh battery packs like the Model S and X but between what appear to be a smaller footprint. Also we weren’t given a look at any sort of frunk, but with the tight space up front and 2+2 config, it is unlikely that Tesla is storing batteries in the front or back of the car.

Don’t be embarrassed about not knowing if you are in an abusive relationship. You are not alone. Unfortunately, sometimes we accept unacceptable behavior for so ling, it starts to feel normal. Men are socialized not to express their feelings or see themselves as victims. Our culture still clings to narrow definitions of gender (although there are signs that this is slowly shifting). Young boys are taught not to express their emotions, to “suck it up” and “be a man.” Tony Porter calls this the “man box” in his well-known TED talk. This can be extremely detrimental to boys as they age, especially if they find themselves in an abusive relationship. Men may feel discouraged to talk about what’s going on in their personal lives, or they feel like no one will believe them. They may not even realize that they are being abused, or they might assume they should just deal with the abuse on their own.

The majority of domestic violence stories covered by the media are about male perpetrators and female victims who are typically in heterosexual relationships. While we certainly don’t want to minimize this violence, focusing on only one type of situation renders invisible the many scenarios that do not fit this definition, including abusive relationships among homosexual, bisexual, and trans* men. This might make many victims feel like they don’t have the space or the support to speak out about their own experiences and seek help. THE ABUSE OF MEN IS OFTEN TREATED AS LESS SERIOUS, OR A “JOKE.”

We’ve seen this in action recently with the elevator footage of Solange Knowles attacking Jay-Z. When a man is abused, many people don’t take it as seriously (in part due to the previous two reasons we’ve mentioned). The truth is, abuse is not a joke, in any situation, between any two people. All victims deserve support and resources to PERVADING BELIEFS OR STE- help them feel safe. REOTYPES ABOUT MEN BEING ABUSERS, WOMEN BEING VICTIMS.

MANY BELIEVE THERE ARE NO RESOURCES OR SUPPORT AVAILABLE FOR MALE VICTIMS. It can seem like the majority of shelters and services for domestic violence victims are women-focused. However, services for male victims do exist. Most federal funding sources require that domestic violence services be provided to all victims of abuse. Our advocates can provide information, assist with safety planning, and/ or find local resources, if available. They can also help brainstorm alternative options if local programs are not meeting the requirements for male victims, including who a caller may be able to contact if they believe they have experienced discrimination. No matter what your situation is, the Hotline is here to help, confidentially and without judgment. Please give us a call anytime, or chat online with us 24/7/365.

Putting senior care providers On NoticE! exposure magazine will be publicly exposing elder abuse in our pages.. The mistreatment of the aged is a societal ill that, sadly, is unlikely to be cured soon. The statistics tell the story. By 2025, the global population of seniors (defined as those age 60 and older) will reach 1.2 billion. Thirty years ago, that figure was 542 million. As the elderly live longer because of enhancements in health care, it means greater numbers will be vulnerable to abuse, whether physical, psychological, sexual or verbal. It is important for family members and friends with loved ones in assisted-living facilities and nursing homes to check in on their elders often and know how they are feeling and if their needs are being met. Caregivers and respite caregivers also have that responsibility. So does the general public. The impacts of abuse are harmful and even deadly. Every day, in millions of homes across the country, legions of home health aides are helping to meet the basic needs of America’s older adults — cooking, cleaning and assisting with activities of daily living. Nearly 10 million adults age 65 and older receive care at home or in residential care settings other than nursing homes. That number is projected to skyrocket as the 65-plus population rises from 40 million today to more than 70 million in 2030, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures.

Mom You Did Your Best! making bad decisions landed me here beyond the bars Now I’m incarcerated. In hindsight, my actions caused my reality!

My life has been a roller-coaster, facing many obstacles as an adolescent on to adulthood. Throughout my journey I’ve experienced confusion as a child, causing emotional distress. This lead me to become sheltered, weary, unfocused, and difficult in dealing with. Being young and stubborn, I couldn’t appreciate the fact that I was blessed with a father figure. I was the type of person who kept feelings bottled up, which caused me to act out negatively. Looking back, my actions were only a cry out for help. Unknowingly to my family, I was suffering from a mental melee. As a reaction towards my actions I was physically punished. Those punishments were the cause for me becoming a tougher and stronger person. Even though my parents had good intentions raising myself and siblings, I was still inquisitive about the happenings of dropping

out of school, sex, guns, running the streets, and dealing drugs. My running buddies were young and rebellious just like me. I was always my own leader, so I did what I wanted to do. Back then I did as much dirt as the others bur fortunately I was lucky enoughto escape from being arrested. By the age of nineteen, literally everyone that I’d ran the streets with were in prison or on the way to prison. Their charges were for drugs, robbery, murder or attempting to do all of the above. Being shot in the past should’ve been a turning point in my life, but it only made me fearless. Sad to say, I knew that one day my demise would happen. Living the street life, it goes hand and hand. My grandmother once told me that I was surviving off of other’s prayers. Although I heard her words…. I wasn’t listening. Now I’m incarcerated. In hindsight, my actions caused my reality! May Ever Life Grow

Puppy Owners CALL FOR PUPPY PLAY DATE (414) 533.7239

Benefits of Early Puppy Training and Socialization As anyone who has shared their life with a dog will attest, little compares to the loving companionship they offer. Many people choose to invite a dog to join their family when it is a young pup as the expectation is that doing so is likely to bring love, laughter and fun in endless ways. While this is certainly true, choosing a young pup over a more mature dog may also bring with it some added responsibilities and potential for frustrations. For many, life with a new pup is far more daunting than they had expected as it is often filled with days and nights trying to entertain an energetic pup who responds to time left alone with barking and howling, nips in play, and is skilled at finding some of your most valuable objects to use as choose toys! The easiest way to ensure you enjoy your pup as much as you had expected (and that you keep them as safe and happy as possible) is to consider training for you and your puppy as early as possible. Some consider training to be something you do when you are trying to resolve a behavior issue in an older dog. In fact, early intervention in the form of training and socialization is the best way to prevent predictable behavior problems that may become progressively more difficult to resolve as your dog matures. When a pup leaves its canine family it is yearning to reattach to a new family (yours!) who will take care of them. This includes providing food, water, shelter, love and, of course, an education. Pups under the age of five months old are like sponges ready to absorb as much information about the world as they can. Early puppy training means you

can ensure that they absorb all the information you deem necessary for them to become a wonderful canine companion. This includes (but is certainly not limited to): when and where to eliminate, what to chew, how to greet people, how to spend time alone, how to respond to your requests for him or her to come when called, sit, and lie down. Unfortunately, far too many people regret to provide their pup with this early education. In far too many cases this dooms both pup and human family members to loads of unnecessary frustrations and doesn’t bode well for the long-term canine-human relationship. Puppies will eliminate where most convenient (sometimes on your rugs), bark (to the detriment of your neighborly relations), chew (on your personal belongings), nip (as a way of playing with you as they would other pups), dig (because it’s just plain fun), and jump (even if they have muddy paws). These are not behaviors your pup will just outgrow. In fact, the more they are practiced, the more they become habits which are progressively more difficult to resolve. Behaviors which were possibly frustrating, but tolerable, in puppyhood often become unbearable as the pup moves into adolescence and adulthood. This results in a deterioration of the relationship and in far too many cases, in the dog being banished from the home for the simple fact that nobody taught him in puppyhood how to behave. In addition to being a preventative for behavior problems, early puppy training and socialization is a valuable way to bond with your pup. By teaching your pup where to eliminate you eliminate the chance that you might reprimand (and scare) your pup for going in the wrong spot. By teaching your pup to inhibit puppy mouthing and nipping you ensure that you and all your family members will enjoy playing with the pup…which means you will all benefit from more puppy play time! Likewise, by teaching your pup to walk nicely on leash, you increase the odds that your pup will have a lifetime filled with loads of fun walks, which is a superb way to provide your dog with mental and physical exercise and prevent an almost endless list of behavior problems.

Many trainers offer puppy training classes in addition to private lessons. Both should be designed to help you learn to become a superb teacher for your pup; who focuses on preventing problems and/or resolving them quickly to prevent deeply rooted and difficult to resolve behavior issues in the future. An added benefit of attending a puppy training class is that it is a terrific way to expose your pup to other puppies and to dog loving people outside of your home. This is a vital foundation for socialization. Puppies who are well on the road to proper socialization before 16 weeks of age are far less likely to suffer from the stress and potential behavior issues later in life that plague many under socialized adult dogs. There is clearly an almost endless list of benefits of early puppy training and socialization. By taking the lead and learning how to properly teach and communicate with your puppy you are ensuring that your pup has the best chance to reach his or her full potential as a wonderful canine companion. Puppies are ready, willing and able to learn loads of important information. By taking the lead and finding a great trainer to show you how to communicate with your puppy you are surely doing one of the kindest things you can for your puppy…ensuring that he or she becomes a wonderful canine member of your family for his or her entire life.
