It is with great pleasure I take this opportunity to present the second newsletter on behalf of Expolanka Toastmasters Club for the Toastmasters year 2018/19. I am so contented to emphasize that this time too our club members stood beside me in making Speak to Lead, 2nd issue of volume 7 a reality.

In this edition we are privileged by the opportunity to feature TM Josephine Lee, 2016 second runner up in World Championship of Public Speaking, the Keynote speaker for Division F and J conference 2018 and our very own TM Ahmed Abdullah, second runner up in Division F Evaluation contest with many other toastmasters who have been an immense strength to our club in every little way possible.

As usual first I would like to thank the Executive Committee of our club for being behind me through thick and thin in completing the newsletter amidst their busy schedule at work. Subsequently I would to thank all the members in our club and outside the club who have helped me even through one single word for the successful completion of the newsletter. Without the support of all of you this would have been an impossible target for me to achieve.

As the Vice President of Public Relations and the editor of the newsletter I am honored to serve this edition to you and I hope that we were able to provide rich content as per your expectations with a lot to learn through every article.

Last but not least, Expolanka Toastmasters Club is always open to listen to you and we are awaiting for your feedback on this.

‘Don’t watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.’

Words that we at Expolanka Toastmasters club have held close to our hearts over the past six months, in our progress towards the standards envisioned by our visionary patron, Mr Hanif Yusoof.

Expolanka Toastmasters Club over the past six months has been able to maintain the standards that won number of accolades during the last Toastmaster year. Winning during the first half of the year; the Smedley ribbon, 8-80 award, Excellence in training, an Advanced Communicator Gold, Advanced Leader Silver, a competent leader and a second Runner-up in the Division F Evaluation speech contest.

On our pursuit in achieving all 10DCP points we have made significant progress achieving distinguished club status, we are also in line to win the prestigious golden gavel award for the 5th time in our short but illustrious history. Our new initiative of collecting the member interest forms have ensured that the clubs targets and plans are aligned to the member’s interest and progress pace. Keeping up with our initial aim of quality educational session, we conducted a session on humorous speeches by DTM Nisal Weerakoon and a session of evaluations by past District Champion Sandun Fernando. Which was followed by a panel discussion with including the two resource people and Past District Chief Judge TM Scerena Dirckze. Our Vice President Education has lead the seamless transition from the existing educational curriculum to the pathways curriculum having 2 members completing level 1 during the current year.

The membership drives initiated by the club have proven to be effective in taking the message of toastmasters to the organization. TM Gazzaly Moulana looks to revamp the member retention strategy attempting to meet member expectations and ensuring effective and entertaining meetings take place.

Our Public Relations team has been on working efficiently on increasing membership awareness and maintaining the positive image of the club. The Public Relations teams during the last quarter was able to revamp and Re- launch the club website and look forward to use the website as means of making our social media platforms to ensure improved learning.

So every member of this club has not been looking at thewatch but has been doing what it does, keep going to ensure the club maintains its impeccable standards of learning and entertainment. Kept Transforming Caterpillars into Butterflies.

- Achievements during the previous quarter of the Toastmaster Year From July 2018 up to today 875 educational goals have been achieved. Out of the Total Educational goals 298 goals are from Pathways. Overall 71 clubs have achieved 5 DCP status or above.

- Plans for the remainder of the year (Club quality, Club Growth and PR)

We will also have quarterly review with district leaders - Snapshot of the Districts action during the next quarter We will focus on Pathways as our actions and overall educational goals.

- How an individual at the club can actively take part in helping the District achieve its goals?

Individual can do their project speeches and contribute to the district to achieve the required DCP goals.

DIVISION CORNER The most significant accomplishment of the division during the last quarter would definitely have to be the recently concluded Division Conference. Journey to Fulfilment, in which we at Division F joint hands with Division J in putting up a memorable conference. The guest speaker all the way from the United States of America was Josephine Lee, the Second Runner-up in the 2016 World Championship of Public Speaking. The conference was enriched with the division Humorous and Evaluation contest which saw speeches of supreme quality being pitted against each other. In a day that had in it quality education, intense contest and friendly fellowship.

Division F has been able to be a front runner in terms of educational targets achieved, a testament to the great work done by all four area directors in trying to achieve the purpose of this incredible fraternity.

AREA CORNER It is my pleasure to pen a few words for the article of Expolanka Toastmasters Club as the Area Director for F2.

The second quarter of this toastmasters year saw quite a lot of activities taking place.

The Area humorous & evaluation speech contest saw the best of all the clubs in the area presenting their best comical and analytical skills. While TM Dilan Joseph from Amana TMC stole the spotlight for humorous, TM Ahmed Mauroof from Expolanka TMC showcased his brilliance in evaluations.

Personally, I was more elated to see all four of the area winners be placed at the division humor & evaluation contest held recently at Global Towers, Colombo. The highlight being TM Dilan Joseph reigning as the champion of the division humorous speech contest and shall represent not only his club but also the area, division as well as Sri Lanka at Ovations 2019 as one of the very best in District 82.

The division conference was led by the key note speaker TM Josephine Lee and it very nice to see the initiative Expolanka TMC had taken in hosting her as well as allowing the members of the club to learn from her experience being a contestant as well as a toastmaster from a different district.

As we dawn upon the end of 06 months, the stats seems to show a smooth performance with regard to club quality & engagement. With some clubs performing very well and others having some catching up to do.

At the moment, Expolanka TMC leads the dashboard with 05 DCP points followed by Amana TMC with 04 DCP points. Union Assurance TMC & University of Colombo TMC have each earned 02 DCP points at the moment.

Incee TMC have scheduled a revitalization plan due to begin in January and of course would appreciate the support & blessings of other area clubs in assisting them with guest speeches, evaluations and key note sessions.

Furthermore, I believe the most exciting news for the area is the new coming club due to charter December end. NIBM TMC led by charter president TM Buddhima Subasinghe has already begun demo meetings at NIBM Colombo with quite an energetic bunch of members whom are looking forward to join the bandwagon of Toastmasters.

I would like encourage area clubs to feel free to support the new club in terms of prepared speeches, evaluations and etc.

As we dawn upon a new year, of course new challenges and exciting times is to be expected. In terms of Toastmasters, clubs needs to calendarize well in advance the officer training dates, judges training dates, emergence and other TLI dates so that maximum benefit can be obtained not only to the excom but overall members.

Also, probably a more important task that lie ahead with the current executive committees is to start molding the next set of leaders to take over respective clubs. Remember, the success of the current set of leaders is not only in reaching the apex in the current year but also in setting a firm foundation to achieve higher in the following year as well.

Finally, the mega event of District 82 – Ovations 2019 has been scheduled in the month of May In Shaa Allah with the intention of meeting you all in Chennai,,, Happy Toastmastering and May God bless !

AN INTERVIEW WITH THEÂ KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR JOURNEY TO FULFILLMENT 2018, TM JOSEPHINE LEE Josephine Lee is a familiar name for many Toastmasters. At the 2016 World Championship of Public Speaking, she walked away with the prestigious trophy for 3rd place. With this victory, she entered into the halls of Toastmasters history as the first Korean American woman to join the ranks of the top 3 speakers in the world.

To achieve this mighty feat, she surpassed 30,000 contestants that took part in the competition across the world.

Today we have the honor of featuring her on the second edition of our newsletter in this Toastmaster year.Â

Q : What do you think of Sri Lanka, the people here and the food?

I love everything about Sri Lanka. I am fascinated by its rich history and culture, its breathtaking views and how the people live in harmony with nature and animals. The food was a highlight for me. I love all the spices and flavors that are unique to the country and eating it off of banana and lotus leaves was a novelty for me as well.

But I would have to say the best part is the people. They were incredibly hospitable, generous and kind. I felt immediately connected to them and felt very much at home.

Q : What other things in addition to the key note were you able to enjoy in the pearl of the Indian Ocean?

My gracious hosts were able to pack in so many incredible experiences in a short period of time.

We watched elephants graze during a safari, climbed the ancient ruins of Sigirya, rode in a bullock cart and went to the temple. I enjoyed learning about the culture the most. It is amazing how deep the history is.

Q : Let us know on your views on the scale of the Division F and J conference.

The event was run beautifully organized and the audience was incredible! I appreciated how well it was planned.

Q : What is your opinion on the quality of the contest you were able to witness?

I witnessed how hard working the Sri Lankan people are through this contest.

The speeches were so well written and rehearsed. I know it must have taken a tremendous amount of time and effort to build.

Q : What advice would you give to the speakers in Sri Lanka, Humorous and Evaluation?

Although there are tools we use in speech craft, there are no rules. I noticed that all the competitors followed a similar structure, so I want to encourage everyone to venture outside the norm.

Q : Tell us few words on the business you are in and the challenges you face as a young female entrepreneur in a traditional niche market.

My company sells Ballet Shoes. It is an incredible niche market. More than anything, the most difficult thing about it is how mentally difficult it is to deal with the ups and downs.

Q : How was your encounters with members of Expolanka Toastmasters club?

I am so humbled by how gracious my hosts were from Expolanka. I have made life long friends through this experience and I will never forget this journey.

Q : Is there anything that you saw in District 82 that you would like to have in your home District?

There are so many things to learn from District 82. Participation, enthusiasm, determination. I wish that our District could see how incredible D82 is.

Q : Would you come to Sri Lanka again and visit Expolanka Toastmasters Club?

One thousand percent, YES!

Life has its amazing ways of engaging us with things we never thought we’d experience. In 2018 August was the time of my life where a whole new identity was formed, the 1st Toastmasters meeting which is a proud step is taken, I would say, out of all things we try in life, Toastmasters was a whole new thing with a hint of everything and torrents of knowledge flowing in to our systems.

I still remember entering that room full of people, with a smile on each and everyone’s face, so welcoming and helpful. I was shy, nervous and a bit confused as to what I should do, but everything went on smoother than I pictured with the help of almost every single member whom I would consider as my gang of friends. One of many motives to join the club, to speak out! To have an audience full bright people yet nonjudgmental and appreciative of everything you are, yes it’s for real, you are allowed to make mistakes and express your thoughts freely on knowledgeable topics.

Moreover Toastmasters is a confidence booster. Whatever fears I had when it comes to speaking in front of an audience just vanished within a few weeks of attending weekly meetings. The fact that not only DTMs and seniors get the chance to play roles is a highly appreciated fact, every single member, including the newest member gets the chance of playing roles of the meeting. It improves our communication and verbal standards while familiarizing us with the club and it’s duties. Leadership, humor, coaching, you name it, Toastmasters will build you up in many more ways than just public speaking. As a fresher I’m happy to say that this step taken will only lead to better roads as a Toastmaster and a vibrant future, carrier and life wise.

HALLOWEEN THEMED JOINT MEETING Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see. You could hear the wolves howl, the mummies growl and the ghosts scowl.

The spookiness was injected into the eerie aura of the mysterious evening ‘the 29th’ and the crowd from the Expo Lanka Toastmasters, Zone 24/7 Toastmasters and the Siyane Toastmasters witnessed the spine-chilling moments bleeding through the gates of Expo Lanka. It was 6 PM, the zombies and the demons started making appearance into the pool of blood hunger in the backdrop of Halloween themed ambience, heavily witch-crafted costumes and demonish decorations. At 6:25 PM the vampires of the respective clubs ‘the trio’ announced the possession of the building by the mystic creatures from their clubs. The meeting was initiated by the introduction of the trio followed by the news announcements by the president of Expo Lanka Toastmasters TM Ahmed Abdullah. It was followed by the introduction of the Toastmaster for the day TM Thaweesha by the Trio and the proceedings were handed over to him, there onwards.

TM of the day started off by introducing the ghostly team of role players for the day, the deadliest creature in the team was the grammarian DTM Zaidh Naushard who embellished himself as a mummy bandaged in the costume, the mummy walked over to the front tearing apart the crowd from the back of the room and called upon the vampire of the Expo Lanka Toastmasters TM Ahmed Abdullah to translate his silent scowls of introducing the word of the day ‘SPOOKY’ which was an intriguing sight to witness followed by the round robin session. It was 6:45 PM, the evening was getting darker and amidst the thrill, the wizardry refreshments were attacked and slaughtered by the hungry wizards and zombies. Done and dusted by the re-invasion of the atmosphere by the creatures.

Next was the prepared speech session that popped out from the agenda. The speakers and the evaluators were introduced by the TM of the day. TM Abinia Sachithananthan gave an insightful speech revolving around ‘What’s your plastic footprint?’ completing her L1-03 which was evaluated by TM Chamin Athauda. The second prepared speaker TM Gazzaly Moulana attempting CC- 06 was evaluated

by TM Amodth Jayawardane giving us an understanding about facing the difficult situations in life. The third prepared speaker TM Praweena Weerasinghe sailed us with her through the journey from dreaming about becoming a leader to ending up with her dream being fulfilled which was impactful. Her speech was evaluated by TM Ahmed Abdullah and that wrapped up the prepared speech session followed by the Table topic session which was conducted by TM Safiya Ismail and evaluated by TM Hirishigen Karuneswaran and TM Thulani Dayaratne. And oh! What an amazing way it was to make the Halloween more daunting.

And now came the final moments of the frightening evening, the General evaluator was invited on stage who called in for the role players report and handed the session back to the TM after evaluating the evening who then handed it back to the Trio. The award winners were announced and awarded where the special award for the best dressed couple was assailed by DTM Zaidh Naushard and TM Praweena Weerasinghe and oh! It was a match made in hell, the Mummy and the Dracula. The terrifying Halloween meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM after a two hour roller coaster trick and treat. The spirits and the demons thoroughly enjoyed the blood and the darkness of the evening indeed and captured it forever in their minds and definitely in their phones too.

I had a childhood friend, he simply excelled in every avenue he chose and accomplished with significance that was a substantial impact. He was the “A” grade candidate in sports and academics. Loved by many for his generosity of unconditional support. We went to school together and I had the opportunity of associating him as a dear friend. He was the center of attention to everyone his age. Every other person wanted to be like him in school. Suddenly things started changing as he started delaying everything he did. Even the simplest task would not be done often. We both completed schooling and there was a smoke screen that obscured him from me and I lost sight of my friend.

Years later I met him, he had no change in his appearance and neither in his selfdevelopment. I asked him why and eventually found out that he was a chronic procrastinator.

I remember him recounting the hours quarreling with himself to do things that can be done right now or should he just delay. He had an early start and now was laps behind everyone his age. Though you cannot measure success by a yard stick it was apparent that due to habit forming he has forced himself to suffer many defeats.

We have all had instances where we put a side simple tasks and keep them building up pressure until it becomes both important and urgent. Most of us do suffer from procrastination and while some on average tend to delay some others can be categorized as chronic procrastinators. Most of us have gone through this while some activities can seem to never be accomplished due to the level of difficulty.

At the brink of failure we often tend to regret on opportunities that were missed or taken for granted for they have become luxury now. We all have that moment where we start thinking to ourselves if only I could have done this, if only I had gone the extra mile, if only I could have woken up when the alarm went on, if only I stopped giving myself silly excuses and the list goes on and I really thought about leaving some space to add in your extras.

If you have been like my friend, then you need to take charge of your life and wind up this habit. So that in the years to some you’ll not be thinking to yourself how best you could have made use of all the possibilities that existed at this point of time. “Time & tide wait no man” all you have is this moment and how you make best use of it will show you what your future moments are going to be like. You are the best version of you and no matter how far you’ve gone down the wrong road it’s never too late to turn back.

THE CONTEST SEASON

The Humorous and Evaluation Club Contest was successfully held on the 19th of October 2018 at Expo Holdings with the participation of 8 and 6 contestants for Humorous and Evaluation Contest respectively. TM Thiwanka and TM Usman pulled off to the Area Contest in Humorous Contest while TM Sharon and TM Ahmed did so in Evaluation Contest.

"It was an amazing & humorous experience though I have never experienced this kind of fulfillment ever before.

The ambiance from our audience were so ecstatic, that it made the contestants surefooted in their field of expertise.

The Union Assurance Head Office was filled with the The Humorous and Evaluation Area contestants on the 16th of November 2018 where TM Ahmed made it to the Division Contest in the Evaluation Contest and TM Thiwanka emerged third place in the Humorous Contest.

"It was my first experience in the Area Level and so I was excited to give it a go at the contest.

What I actually wanted was to enjoy practicing the speech and delivering it at the contest calmly and without tension. However, I felt a little tensed when I entered the contest room at the Union Assurance, which was a new place to me. But somehow I managed to hold my nerves together to a great extent and won the third place, which I believe is a great achievement in my life. That’s how you get-to-know your strengths and weaknesses and, from my experience I realized that I could do better next time. I’m really thankful for my mentor TM Hisham and all the members of Expolanka Toastmasters club for helping me throughout."

TM Thiwanka Premathilaka "Evaluation speech contest gives you an opportunity learn while it helps another speaker become a better speaker.

You are able to reach area contest only if you are a winner of your club contest. At the area contest you have the opportunity to compete against members from other clubs, which introduces you to a wider range of contestants with many different competencies.

The area contest tends to expose you to many different ways of thinking and techniques when it comes to evaluation.

The area contest is a good place to meet new people and as well as learn from observing other contestants."

The Division F and J Conference made history at Global Towers on the 9th of December 2018 with the Keynote speaker TM Josephine Lee. The day was glamorous for Expolanka Toastmasters Club where TM Ahmed got 3rd place in the Evaluation Contest.

"To have participated in the evaluation contest for the first time proceeding through club and area all the way to the division contest and placing 3rd was indeed a dream run.

TM Ahmed Abdullah initiated his toastmasters journey in the year 2017 and with his continuous commitment, he emerged second runner up in the Division F Evaluation Speech Contest making Expolanka Toastmasters Club shine again.

We sat with TM Ahmed Abdullah for an insight through his road to Division glory and exciting journey as a Toastmaster.

Q : As the president of Expolanka Toastmasters Club, how do you feel about your journey so far?

It has been an amazing experience to be part of the club to be given the reigns is an honour. It has been challenging taking up the role and loads of work at times, but feels good to be the President of a Club that has helped this many people.

Q : ETMC is a club with a very rich history for over 6 years now. Was it a challenge for you to take up the role as the president after 1 year in the Toastmasters fraternity?

Yes was a definite challenge, especially with no EC experience. It has been a challenge but a satisfying one. Having the support of all members, especially of the senior members and to have them looking up to me is both a humbling and reassuring experience. It has been an incredible journey filled with loads of learning. Looking forwards to an eventful 6 months.

Q : How do you feel to be on the Division contest stage for the first time in your

Toastmasters journey?

The whole contest season this year was a dream run to be honest. I never thought of evaluations to be my strong suit. But to have progress that far was just an incredible experience.

“I think the most important thing is to be as competitive as you can and to have an open mind when the results are being announced.”

Q : Did you get nervous on the big stage or is it another usual speech day for you?

In terms of what was being delivered it was the usual speech evaluating the test speakers’ content, structure and delivery. Doing it in front of all those people was a rather different experience, wouldn’t really say that I was nervous.

Q : Have you ever thought that you would end up in top 3 in the Evaluation Division contest?

Participating in the Evaluation contest for the first time it was always one step at a time, I never really looked too far ahead. Before the Club contest all I was looking forward to was being placed in the club. Going into the area the focus was only the area. So never really sat and thought how far I would go.

Q : Tell us about your experience in the whole Humorous and Evaluation Club, Area and Division contest.

The contest season is an experience like no other. Having contested in both Humorous and Evaluations at the club level for a person that didn’t think was very funny and not the best at Evaluations being placed in both contests was a good feeling. I think the most important thing is to be as competitive as you can and to have an open mind when the results are being announced.

Q : What type of advice would you like

to give to any new Toastmaster?

Toastmastering is beautiful, it has its unique way of bringing out the best in you, stepping in for the first couple of months specially you might not see that as there is no instant transformation, but meeting by meeting role by role it helps mold you into something better than what you were starting off. So stay steadfast and say yes to the roles you are given, looking back you would be amazed by the transformation.

Q : Do you wish to continue as the president of ETMC for the second consecutive year as well?

The two best thing about ETMC is the great and humble people and the opportunity it gives, my story of taking the helm of the club with the blessing of every member is a great example. At the end of the year I believe it would be my turn to allow another member that opportunity to embark on a similar journey. I believe that we at ETMC has a great set of aspiring leaders and my duty would be to decide on a suitable successor.

Q : What will be your next step in the Toastmasters journey?

Right now my focus is on having a great year at Expolanka Toastmasters club to finish off on a high. Ensuring we meet the targets we have set while ensuring quality education and fun meetings and the next step I know for certain would be Immediate Past President of Expolanka Toastmasters Club.
