Western Mass and the American Revolution:

Western Mass played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, embodying the spirit of defiance and innovation that defined th e era. From the earliest stirrings of rebellion to the establishment o f new democratic ideas, this region contributed significantly to the cause of American independence. Today, visitors can explore historic sites, retrace the footsteps of revolutionaries, and experience the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom.

The Spirit of Rebellion

Long before the first shots were fired at Lexington and Concord, the people of Western Massachusetts were engaged in resistance against British rule. Springfield, a major crossroads for trade and communication, became a hub for revolutionary activity. As tensions escalated, militias formed throughout the region, ready to take up arms in defense of their rights.

One of the most famous pre-Revolutionary uprisings was Shays’ Rebellion. Led by Daniel Shays, a veteran of the Continental Army, the rebellion in Springfield highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by farmers and working-class citizens in the new republic. The event ultimately influenced the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, reinforcing the need for a stronger federal government.

Historic Sites to Visit

For those eager to walk in the footsteps of revolutionaries, Western Mass offers a wealth of historic sites that bring the past to life.

Springfield Armory National Historic Site

A must-visit for history enthusiasts, the Springfield Armory was established by George Washington in 1777 as a critical supply center for the Continental Army. It became the nation’s first federal armory, producing muskets and other weaponry that gave American forces a tactical advantage. Today, the Springfield Armory National Historic Site features exhibits on arms manufacturing, military strategy, and the role of the armory in shaping early American industry.

The Ashley House (Sheffield)

This historic house in Sheffield tells the story of Colonel John Ashley, a Revolutionary War patriot, and Elizabeth “Mum Bett” Freeman, an enslaved woman who sued for her freedom in 1781. Her successful lawsuit in the Massachusetts courts helped establish a legal precedent that led to the abolition of slavery in the state. Visitors to the Ashley House can learn about Freeman’s remarkable story and the broader impact of the Revolution on concepts of liberty and human rights.

The Porter-PhelpsHuntington House (Hadley)

Built in 1752, this well-preserved homestead provides insight into the daily lives of a colonial family during the Revolutionary period. The house remained in the same family for generations, preserving letters, artifacts, and accounts of life during the war. Guided tours offer a deep dive into the social, economic, and political dynamics of the time.

Springfield, as one of the largest cities in the region, also benefits from this relationship through economic and tourism collaborations. Cultural institutions, Irish music and dance events, and trade partnerships highlight the shared history between these cities.

Dingle & West Springfield

The picturesque town of Dingle, located on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland, has a special relationship with West Springfield. This connection acknowledges the strong Irish presence in West Springfield and the shared cultural traditions between the two regions. Dingle is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, fishing industry, and traditional Irish music, which resonates with many Irish-Americans in Western Mass. The sister city bond fosters tourism exchanges, with many Western Mass residents visiting Dingle to explore their

ancestral roots. Likewise, as the home of the Irish Cultural Center of Western New England, West Springfield hosts Irish-themed festivals and community gatherings that reflect the traditions of Dingle, including live music performances, Irish dance, and storytelling events. This partnership is further strengthened by the presence of Dingle merchants in the Dingle Pavilion at The Big E – the state fair for all 6 New England states.

Salinas & Holyoke

Beyond Ireland, Holyoke also maintains a sister city relationship with Salinas, Puerto Rico. This partnership reflects the significant Puerto Rican population in Holyoke, the largest per capita in the mainland U.S. Many families in Holyoke have roots in Salinas, leading to a close-knit connection between the two cities.

Festivals in Holyoke, such as the annual Patronales Festival, celebrate the vibrant culture of Puerto Rico, including traditional music, dance, and food. Additionally, initiatives between the cities encourage educational opportunities, business investment, and social programs that benefit both communities.

Overall, these sister city relationships celebrate historical ties and create opportunities for collaboration across cultures. Through tourism, education, and economic initiatives, these partnerships continue to strengthen the bonds between Ireland, Puerto Rico, and Western Mass.

Five Reasons to Move to Western Massachusetts

Considering relocating to Western Massachusetts?

We would love to welcome you!

Here are five strong reasons to make the move.

1.

Go urban, suburban, or rural

2.

Be at the center of it all

Want city life with access to nature? Or a country setting with proximity to city amenities? Find urban, suburban, rural, or college town settings, all in Western Mass. The region’s metropolitan centers— including Amherst, Northampton, and Springfield— are magnets for vibrant art, culture, dining, entertainment, retail, educational, and professional services options. Meanwhile, residents have an endless list of outdoor sports and recreation choices, including hiking, cycling, fishing, skiing, boating, apple picking, and so much more. Lakes, rivers, mountains, trails, parks? We’ve got them. Restaurants, wineries, breweries, museums, zoos? We’ve got those, too.

Plus, with most of the region’s towns and cities being Right-to-Farm Communities, you may find yourself living the farm life you always dreamed of—fresh eggs and all—while still being able to access quality schools, hospitals, grocery stores, and all that the region has to offer.

The “Western Gateway to New England” is one of Springfield’s nicknames. That moniker extends to Western Mass at large, with North-South and East-West interstate highway connections through Interstates 91 and 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) making travel to surrounding states and regions a breeze. By car from Springfield, get to Hartford in 30 minutes, Boston in 90 minutes, and New York City in 2.5 hours. Or catch a flight from Bradley International Airport—New England’s second largest airport—on nonstop flights to more than 35 domestic and international destinations, within a short commute to Boston Logan, Newark, JFK, and all international airports.

Western Mass is centrally located for access to the rest of New England… and the world.

3. Get more for less

With a median home price of $325,000, the Pioneer Valley attracts out-of-towners seeking more bang for their buck. Most notably, buyers from New York, Boston, Hartford, and Providence are cashing in on dramatic differences in median home prices and making the move to Western Mass. In Massachusetts, the median home price of single- family homes sold in 2023 was $600,000—in Boston, it was $800,000. The national median single-family home sales price was $391,700 in Q4 2023, with home prices still rising in 85% of U.S. cities. Western Mass beats all of that.

Beyond housing affordability, Western Mass offers more affordable day-to-day living. The cost of living in Springfield, for example, is 23% lower than the Massachusetts average. By city, cost of living is 29% lower than New York, 38% lower than Boston, 1.9% lower than Hartford, and 8% lower than Providence.

Cost of living is especially important for recent graduates and young professionals building a foundation. More than 170,000 students attend 29 colleges and universities in New England’s Knowledge Corridor®, and many decide to stay after graduation. Why go elsewhere when you can get more for less in Western Mass?

REGION AT A GLANCE

4. Find history & innovation all in one place

History meets innovation in Western Mass. The region is vibrant with Native American heritage, Colonial history, industrial legacy, architectural artifacts, literary landmarks, and more. Meanwhile, it is a center for research and development, advanced manufacturing, and engineering, stemming from the region’s history as the birthplace of the assembly line in 1819, by Thomas Blanchard, as well as from the state’s standing as the second-highest R&D spender nationally.

Known as the “City of Firsts,” Springfield is the birthplace of America’s first Armory and military arsenal, the sport of basketball, the first Americanmade automobile, and Theodor Geisel, better known as “Dr. Seuss,” among a long list of accolades.

Dive deep into history, innovation, or both—right here in Western Mass.

5. Invest in a growing region

The country is abuzz about Western Mass. Springfield, the region’s economic hub, ranks as one of the 100 Best Places to Retire by U.S. News & World Report, and the National Association of REALTORS® identified the city as one of the Top 10 Housing Markets of 2024 nationwide, citing housing affordability and low unemployment rate. With Massachusetts looking to improve high-speed transportation options from Boston through to Pittsfield, remote workers flocking to the area, and our incomparable quality of life and low cost of living attracting new residents, the region is expected to see continued growth. Now is the time to invest.

There

are so many

reasons why Western Mass is one of the best places to live, work, and play. We hope to welcome you home soon!

Erica Swallow is a Springfield resident and local REALTOR® who specializes in helping homebuyers relocate to Western Massachusetts. With a background in technology marketing, she holds degrees from NYU, MIT, and Simmons University. She is a proud resident of Springfield, having relocated after graduate school to build a better life and stronger community.
