t Christmas time in the small Gold Rush town of Sonora, I have always thought the shops and stores along Washington Street seemed to shine brightest. In fact, I always thought that Sonora’s small town-ness became just more so at Christmas time.

In days past, or at least when I was young all the lights seemed brighter. Everyone shopped downtown and all the stores stayed open late one night a week. e

As a young boy growing up in Sonora you could tell Christmas was coming when the city work-

ers started stringing Christmas decorations across Washington Street, from light pole to light pole. The same city workers would then bring the small red hut that was Santa’s house to Courthouse Park. As Christmas got near we looked forward to the day Mom would take us downtown to shop for Christmas presents. It would be a special treat if we got to go in the evening when the stores stayed open late.

Downtown was where everyone went to shop. It is this main street feel that still shines in Sonora, and especially at Christmas time.You can still tell Christmas time is coming when the city decorations go up. he Seven Scrolls: Sword of Pantok follows along the fantasy genre established by literary greats such as J.R.R.Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

I couldn’t put this book down. I was pleasantly surprised by this; so much so that I read it, cover to cover in just about three days, which is compelling testimony for a great winter read!

This is one of the best books that I’ve read in the last year,

and I’d happily recommend it to any reader. Wolf Krismanits has written a beautiful story that I know you’ll enjoy reading over and over again.

One that managed to take hold and grow into its’ own being. So let’s fast forward 100 plus years to the earlier days of our generation. By the time the 1960’s arrived, Sonora was part of the golden chain along Highway 49 and held a population thriving on tourism, logging and recreation.

ike many of our ancestors, I came here as a young first generation born son of European immigrants in 1968. The county population then had swelled to almost 18,000 but Sonora then as it is today was still ‘small town USA.’ Arriving in the middle of the second grade, I was blessed enough to attend classes on the old dome campus, Cassina High, always on the hill where East Church Street ends at Baretta Street. From there we had a great view of town and plenty of slopes to slide down on the snowy days that would blanket our village in white satin.

ut what is it that this little town is really made of?

How did this little town grow up to what we see today? Why is it that this area has so many happy people proud to Mundorf Mercantile, above, the Europa Deli below (Umpqua Bsnk) call Sonora home? To answer these questions and try to give a ‘local’s’ perspective of what we cherish here, I’d like to take a few steps back in time….

The shopkeepers and the shoppers were almost all recognizable and the shops all had the same friendly allure they have to this day. Sonora was a small town and the people here knew it! Just like today, you could feel it in the friendly smiles.

had to leave for the big city to attend college in the late 70’s and early 80’s but hung my license here locally, when I started selling real estate at age 20. Even though college was 2 hours away, this was the ‘woods’ I knew and it was here that I felt opportunity. In 1984, with a degree in hand, I returned, married, started my family and my career.

hat was half my lifetime ago, and I’m proud that I did it! You see, although they were the next generation, my children had the opportunity of growing up here with the all the same majesty of my own experiences. They carry the same smile when you talk of their hometown of Sonora. Granted, times, faces and places may all change a bit but the pride of this community always remains strong and the lessons it teaches never change. My children still think of this as a small town and they know the great outdoors that surrounds us is a stones throw away and holds many great adventures.

e? I now work in my own little mortgage office, historically named for the bus station that used this space before my father annexed it as overflow dining for his restaurant. My father passed long ago, but I have continued along his trail, a picture of him on my office wall, next to the desk that I sit in which is right behind the sidewalk I first started sweeping way back in 1970.And if you should happen to see me as you walk by and notice my smile and a sparkle in my eyes, just know that it is at least in part, these many treasures of Sonora that brings my friendly greeting to you.

2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 cups sugar 1 cup oil 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 eggs 2 cups shredded carrots 1 8 oz. can crushed pineapple, well drained ½ cup raisins 1 5 - 8 oz. bag of sliced almonds

1. Heat oven to 350. Line 1214 muffin paper baking cups.

2. In medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; set aside.

3 In large bowl, combine sugar, oil, 2 teaspoons vanilla and eggs;

5. Fill paper-lined muffin cups ¾ full. Sprinkle sugar and sliced almonds evenly over each muffin.

30-40 minutes or until muffins spring back when touched lightly in center. Cool slightly and carefully remove muffins and serve warm or cool.

Santa’s Starlight Express & Santa By Daylight

anta is taking some time out of his busy schedule to make special daytime and nighttime appearances at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park this holiday season. Special train rides with Santa will operate over the threeday Thanksgiving weekend (November 23, 24 & 25) and again the weekend before Christmas (December 15 & 16). Advance tickets to ride with Santa are available now but seating is limited.

Nighttime Rides Aboard Santa’s Starlight Express.

For two nights only, Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24, visitors are encouraged to bundle up and join Santa and his musical friends for two lighted Christmas trains departing at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

The special train rides -- lighted and filled with the music and magic of Christmas -will get visitors in the holiday spirit with live holiday music and caroling on and off the train. Greeted by carolers at the dock, San-

ta will arrive at the station aboard the Sierra No. 3, then join riders on a train of festively lit cars pulled by the Shay No. 2. Every child will have plenty of time to whisper their wishes to Santa as he and his elves make their way through the train, accompanied by live music onboard. Hot chocolate will be available for purchase at the depot.

Tickets for the nighttime rides aboard “Santa’s Starlight Express” are $24 for adults, $12 for youths, and free for children two and under (traveling on a lap). Discounts are applied to members.

Rides Aboard Santa by Daylight Popular Santa By Daylight train rides also continue this year during daylight hours, on November 23, 24 & 25, and again on December 15 & 16. Trains run hourly from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

n the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills, in the heart of California’s “Gold Country” lies Sonora, named after the miners from Sonora Mexico who settled the City in 1848. Known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines”, this pristine City still holds on to its historic charm with many of its existing buildings dating back to the 1800’s.
