March is upon us. Punxsutawney Phil, the world-famous groundhog, emerged from his burrow in western Pennsylvania on Groundhog Day and saw his shadow, predicting another six weeks of winter. SGA TRAVELS TO TALLAHASSEE written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS

Recently, the Student Government Association Presidents from each of the high schools in Brevard County traveled to Tallahassee to meet with our legislatures. Cocoa Beach was represented by SGA President Sara Axelsson. According to Supt. Desmond Blackburn, “Our SGA leaders took on the hard issues, stood their ground, made compelling arguments in a respectful manner, AND they were just some really cool people to hang around with.” Transportation funding, manufacturing programs, maintaining local revenue, and the development of mental health programs were the topics of discussion. The students left a great impression and brought us closer to some of our needs coming to fruition. What is Brevard Public School’s legislative agenda? The focus is on items which need more monetary support. One is the transportation formula by which schools receive dollars for transportation. More than 67 districts across the state of Florida experience shortfalls on transportation funding and BPS would like the legislature to revise its formula to cover all costs.

And isn’t computer coding a language in and of itself ? Another policy position is for the state to allow 2-3 years of rigorous computer-cording courses to replace world language courses and allow students successful in these courses to be eligible for Bright Futures Scholarships and admission to Florida state universities. There are other policy positions of Brevard Public Schools which can be found on the district’s webpage. But my guess is that the students representing high schools all across our district had an experience they won’t soon forget and left their mark in Tallahassee.

Another item on the legislative agenda includes seeking $1.5 million Thanks, Sara! to establish a center for teaching manufacturing and welding skills at the Brevard Adult Education campus. Establishing a program such as this would allow students who might otherwise be dropouts to Minutemen Boys Lacrosse not only earn diplomas 3/2/18 vs. Edgewood (away) 7pm 3/6/18 vs. Satellite (home) 7pm or GEDs, but also bevs. Viera (away) 5:30pm come certified producmarch 3/12/18 3/14/18 vs. John Carroll (home) 6pm tion technicians. MALIK’S

MESSAGE

FROM THE MAYOR

C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E

written by Mayor Ben Malik

Last month, our oldest son, Christopher J. Malik, turned 18 and will be graduating from Cocoa Beach High School to begin the next chapter of his life pursuing a college degree (he wants to study business and be a banker like his dad!). Kelly and I contemplated where the time went as it seemed like just yesterday he was at Roosevelt Elementary, playing little league and hanging with his friends playing basketball at the Cocoa Beach Rec Center (they still play together today!). My wife is full of angst and worry as she has always been the doting mom to ensure the children had lunches squared away, clean clothes, homework completed, checks properly made out (usually the morning the checks were due as our children would forget to tell her until the deadline date!) for yearbooks, school functions, sports, etc. As she worries about who will need her now, I remind her that I am pretty helpless without her (and we will gain an extra den!!), and the children will always be part of our family as they grow into families of their own. Children grow up and go off to adulthood; our jobs as parents are to provide a solid foundation for our children to instill strong values, work ethic and compassion. It dawned on me that change is truly constant in life, as humans we have to be adaptable to change to survive. As Benjamin Franklin said, “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes” (I will certainly try to avoid both as long as I am able!). As we get older we have to exercise to maintain our health, and certainly can’t eat all the things we used to in our youth (maybe the chicken wings and beer is not a balanced meal, but man does it taste good with football!). In the same way, our town will change as advances in technology and innovation will revolutionize our area: driverless cars will be the norm in the upcoming years, internet provided by low-Earth orbit satellites (look out Spectrum, OneWeb is going to give you some competition!), Tesla electric powered robotic lawn mowers such as those being considered right now for upgrades to Lori Wilson Park, solar powered roof tiles powering our homes, etc. For example, I started my 8th year as the VP/Commercial Relationship Manager at the same bank branch location in Melbourne, mind you we have gone through four name changes at the same location (3 ownership changes, Prime Bank, Florida Bank of Commerce (FBC), Sunshine Bank and now CenterState Bank). We are the largest community based bank in Florida with over $10 billion in assets committed to local decision making. The business structure is designed to value the unique character of the communities we serve and to encourage decision making by the banker that is closest to the action (each region is autonomous with bankers making decisions closest to our markets). Blueprints for a drive-through in Okeechoobee don’t apply for a drive-through in Palm Beach (not many cattle trailers pulling into Palm Beach drive-throughs!). This de-centralized decision making costs more from an operational dollars and cents perspective,

but the results are priceless in order to make the best decisions based upon local market conditions! As well, a one-size-fits-all does not apply to building codes in a coastal community versus inland communities. I hope we can have a factual based conversation about these differences as we ask the voters for their input in 2018. Lastly, home rule is currently under assault at the State level, with Tallahassee wanting to preempt local home rule on several fronts. I encourage you as residents to write to your State of Florida elected officials to support home rule on local issues. Local government is closest to the people they serve, and in my mind, the most accessible and responsive to their constituents. You may not agree with me on every topic, but I welcome all input and criticism (you can reach me on my cell with any feedback, 321-794-6668)! See you at the Roosevelt Elementary Playground build on March 3rd, 2018; let’s build the kids a playground! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

Nolan’s St. Patrick’s Day

Celebrati

n

10 Year Anniversary

AN INTERVIEW WITH JOHNNY NOLAN

On St. Patrick’s Day everyone is Irish. From Irish beer and shamrocks, to corned beef and cabbage, St. Patrick’s Day is a festive celebration that is celebrated by all. Nolan’s Irish Pub is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with an epic block party that takes over an entire parking lot and side street. The “Home of the Perfect Pint,” Nolan’s Irish Pub is known for their St. Patrick’s Day party. Every year they throw an epic St. Patrick’s Day celebration perfect for those looking for an authentic Irish party and families looking for some delicious corned beef and cabbage and family fun. There will be (lots of) beer, live Irish music, Irish dancers, corned beef and cabbage, pulled pork, face paintings, St. Patrick’s Day t-shirts and more. What would an Irish celebration on St. Patrick’s Day be without Irish beers and ciders? Nolan’s Irish Pub will have copious amounts of beers, ciders, and wine on sale. What are we celebrating when we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, “the Day of the Festival of Patrick”), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the

foremost patron saint of Ireland. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, Irish traditional music sessions (céilithe), and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province

of Newfoundland and Labrador (for provincial government employees), and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. In short, we are having a celebration of our culture around the world. A good day to be Irish and to have a good old time. What time does the party get started on St. Patrick’s Day? We have a very important Rugby match IRELAND V’S ENGLAND in the morning at 10:45. So the pub itself will be open around 10am. This is a bit of a traditional match and usually decides the winner of the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament. The outside event kicks off at 11am with music and food served from the start. What entertainment do you have lined up for the St. Patrick’s Day Party? The Brohams - Paudie McNeela - Bill Mul-

len - Paul Rowan - Dave Birks - Damion Suomi - Nolan’s Ukulele Collective - Nolan’s Bards - Traditional Irish Band - Brevard Police & Fire Pipes & Drums - Emerald Knights Irish Dancers Will you have traditional Irish food available? Yes, we will have Corned Beef and Cabbage Meals, Corned Beef Sandwiches, Pulled Pork, Clam Chowder, Beef Sausages. Also, Home Made Irish Breads, Scones and Cakes. Along with Hot Dogs, Popcorn and Snacks. Is this a family event or should we leave the kids at home? Nolan’s holds a very family friendly event. The kids love the music and Irish dancers and getting dressed up. We provide a very safe environment with security staff and police on site all day. Are you working with a charity this year? Absolutely. Our charity is Our Saviour Catholic School, Cocoa Beach. Parking will be provided by Our Saviour Catholic School and the Church grounds. Shuttle buses will be available all day at no cost to the revelers.

CertificatiMatters! on

In the U.S., there are 24 medical specialty boards, such as, the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Internal Medicine. These boards certify physicians in various specialties and sub-specialties. To become certified, a physician must spend several years-in some cases, more than six years—after medical school getting supervised, in-practice training. In addition, all specialty boards require passage of exams intended to assess medical knowledge and clinical judgment.

As spring and summer approach us, days become longer, the water temperature warms and we tend to spend a lot more time on the beach and in the sun… which we all know damages our skin and results in early aging. Fortunately for Cocoa Beach residents Brevard Medi Spa is nestled along cottage row in downtown Cocoa Beach. Purchased two years ago by Cocoa Beach resident, Paula Plesher and her fiancée board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bernabe Vazquez, Brevard Medi Spa offers medical-grade solutions to slow down the aging process. The beauty and plastic surgery business has grown exponentially since the “selfie” and social media craze. More people are trying to find the “fountain of youth” through products such as Botox, Dysport, injectable

fillers, skin care creams and skin care treatments. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, these procedures have risen up to 759% since the year 2000. But… buyer beware… in the state of Florida, any physician, regardless of his/her specialty, is allowed to call themselves a “cosmetic surgeon” which allows them to perform not only injectable procedures but surgical procedures as well. The state of

14

Florida also allows physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners, with limitations, to perform these minimally invasive procedures. Dr. Vazquez has been in private practice for 30 years. He owns and operates his main surgical facility in Miami and has never delegated these services to anyone in his practice. He strongly believes that lesser trained personnel could never have the depth of experience in a field outside their specialty. This is why at Brevard Medi Spa the only person performing any and all injectable treatments is Dr. Vazquez. If you are not ready for injectable treatments, Brevard Medi Spa offers a wide variety of skin care treatments and medical-grade skin care products. These include microdermabrasion, microneedling, dermaplaning, photon light therapy, microcurrent, chemical peels and facials designed to treat each guest’s individual skin requirements. Some of these services, such as

microneedling will enhance injectable fillers by stimulating collagen production. Their medical aesthetician, Melodie, has 34 years of experience in medical aesthetics and is very comfortable in using and suggesting the top skin care products such as Obagi, SkinCeuticals and Dr. Vazquez’s own product he calls “skin resurfacing cream” which he had formulated by a compound pharmacy to produce maximum results. Although Dr. Vazquez does not perform surgical procedures in Cocoa Beach, he is thrilled and grateful that patients from Cocoa Beach and surrounding areas are willing to have their surgery in Miami and then do their post-operative appointments at the spa. Dr. Vazquez is in the spa every other Friday and Saturday, by appointment, unless the surf is good. (just kidding) Brevard Medi Spa is open Tuesday through Friday… Mondays and Saturdays are by appointment only. As a final reminder, Paula and Dr. Vazquez ask that you check the credentials of your physician to see what specialty your doctor is certified in by going to the American Board of Medical Specialties website at www.abms.org.
