Today, the park pays tribute to the bravery on both sides of the conflict with special events, educational activities, and other programs that increase public understanding and engagement in the Horseshoe Bend story. The Lake Martin area is home to a variety of outdoor adventures, but paddling the beautiful Tallapoosa River is easily one of the best kept secrets. A growing number of kayaking enthusiasts travel to Lake Martin each year to experience the scenic shoals, wildlife encounters, and iconic Cahaba lilies found on the Tallapoosa.
Story by Katelyn Cotten
Stretching across the southern end of the Appalachian Mountain Range, the Tallapoosa River flows for nearly 260 miles through the rolling hills of the Piedmont Province. In the Lake Martin area, access to the river is granted by the 25-mile Harold Banks Canoe Trail. The trail consists of a combination of flat waters and shoals rarely ranked above Class I on the International Scale of River Difficulty, perfect for a peaceful, family-friendly adventure.
There are a variety of outfitters in the Lake Martin area providing services to help make any paddle a successful one. From canoe and kayak rentals to river shuttle services to guided river paddles and fishing trips, experienced outfitters assist in planning trips down this designated section of the Alabama Scenic River Trail.
The Harold Banks Canoe Trail is divided into three manageable sections:
SINGLE DAY PADDLES
• Bibby’s Ferry: This 5-hour float winds 8.25 miles beginning at Bibby’s Ferry, just across the Tallapoosa County line in Chambers County, ending at Germany’s Ferry Bridge. This section features unique spots such as the Baptistry and Fish Trap, brisk shoals, flat waters, incredible fishing, and a public campsite.

• Germany’s Ferry Beginning at Germany’s Ferry Bridge, this 6-hour float winds down the river for nearly 10 miles and ends at Horseshoe Bend Bridge. This middle section includes crisp, blue waters, fishing spots, mile-long Griffin Shoals, and a reminiscent paddle through historic Horseshoe Bend National Military Park.
• Horseshoe Bend This widely popular 4-hour float stretches 6 miles across the most scenic portion of the Tallapoosa River. It begins with public access at Horseshoe Bend Bridge and ends at Jay Bird Creek public access point. Horseshoe Bend is a lower river section and features numerous patches of Cahaba lilies, Peters Island, Laura’s Leap, Irwin Shoals, and a public campsite at Jay Bird Creek. For more excitement, be sure to bear left or right to paddle the swift side chutes.
CAHABA LILIES
Each year, thousands of Cahaba lilies make a grand appearance on the Tallapoosa River. First described by American botanist William Bartram in 1773, this rare aquatic flower thrives in rocky shoals at the Fall Line. Cahaba lilies, also referred to as Shoal lilies, are unique to the southeast, specifically Alabama, Georgia, and parts of North and South Carolina. The Tallapoosa’s flowing waters and abundant sun exposure give life to distinctive, fragrant three-inch blooms seen only during late spring from around Mother’s Day to Father’s Day—and, as if the lilies are not unique enough, they only open up in the evening with individual flowers lasting 24 hours. While the flowers are most prominently found in Alabama at the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, the Tallapoosa River offers panoramic views of Cahaba lilies at the Horseshoe Bend section of the Harold Banks Canoe Trail.

TALLAPOOSA RIVERFEST
Tallapoosa RiverFest brings together kayakers and outdoorsmen from across the southeast to Lake Martin to paddle the Harold Banks Canoe Trail in celebration of the river’s iconic Cahaba lilies, vast wildlife, and host of unique landmarks and attractions. In conjunction, the Town of New Site hosts a variety of craft vendors, educational workshops, food trucks, and live entertainment for the whole family.

WELLBORN Musclecar Museum
Story by Scott Baker

While their muscle car-collecting and promotion have made the Wellborns a household name in the car-collecting world, their home base is still in Alexander City, Alabama. Tim’s encyclopedic muscle car knowledge and Pam’s infectious personality make them a formidable car-collecting team. As perennial favorites at the Mecum Auction, the world’s largest collector car auction, they are sought out for their muscle car knowledge and entertaining style. Tim and Pam also share their expertise and knowledge as longtime board members of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega.
The Wellborn Musclecar Museum, located in Alexander City, features a rotating collection of more than 85 fully-restored and perfectlyrunning muscle cars from model years 1968 to 1971. Included in the collection are Aero-Cars designed for NASCAR, Ford Boss Mustangs, GTOs, LS6 Chevelles, W30
Oldsmobiles, Buick GSX, and MOPARS which showcase all the major manufacturers of muscle machines of that era. Tucked away in a vintage car dealership, the museum is a testament to owners Tim and Pam Wellborn’s commitment and mission to preserving and promoting these highperformance vehicles.
The museum’s curator, Alton Freeman, is eager to share interesting stories about the provenance of the cars or in-depth, technical factoids about engines, interiors, and subtle year-to-year chassis modifications. Having been with the museum for several years, he’s also quick to entertain with anecdotes and heartfelt stories about the Wellborn’s connection to the cars. The cars alone are enough to warrant a visit; however, the stroll back in time with the added benefit of the curator’s stories make it a truly memorable experience.

Historic LANDMARKS
Story By Harold Banks

From the Pre-Colonial era to present day, the Lake Martin area has experienced historic change. In fact, the area has hosted Native American towns, legendary battles, frontier settlements, a gold rush, ferries and grist mills, business visionaries, textile mills, and three major hydroelectric dams—with the Tallapoosa River flowing 66 miles through the heart of it all. However, no event has had a more lasting economic effect than the construction of Martin Dam in 1926, which gave life to 880 miles of shoreline, vastly located within Tallapoosa County.
Often called Alabama’s “Crown Jewel” and the state’s only treasured lake, Lake Martin has provided Tallapoosa County and surrounding areas with historic growth and endless opportunity for both residents and tourists.
HERE ARE A FEW OF THE SPECIAL PLACES THAT COMMEMORATE HISTORY THROUGHOUT THE LAKE MARTIN AREA
Hank Williams Cabin
The famed country music star, Hank Williams, was a frequent visitor to Tallapoosa County and the Lake Martin area. During one of his infamous visits to the cabin on Lake Martin’s shorelines, Hank was inspired to write his famous song ‘Kowaliga’.
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park
In the early morning on March 27, 1814, General Andrew Jackson and an army of over three thousand attacked the Red Stick Creek village of Tohopeka, tragically known today as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend Approximately 1,000 Redstick warriors and an unknown number of women and children were behind
Mistletoe Bough
Bed & Breakfast
Constructed from 1890 to 1895 for Reuben Herzfeld, Mistletoe Bough is an outstanding example of the Free Classical Queen Anne style. This classical home has been magnificently restored and serves as a bed and breakfast on Hillabee Street in Alexander City.
Smith Mountain Fire Tower
Smith Mountain is the highest elevation on Lake Martin. Towering 90 feet above the jagged peak is a historic fire lookout tower constructed in 1939, part of a six-tower fire protection network and former district office of the Alabama Forestry Commission. Now fully restored, the tower arguably offers the most scenic panoramic view in Alabama. Kiosks and graphic display panels on top of the mountain describe the natural and cultural history of the area, most notably the story of John Benson. One of the most interesting personalities in the history of the Lake Martin area, Benson was born a slave on Kowaliga Creek. As a free man, he bought the property he once worked as a slave. Over a short period of time, he became a very influential farmer, builder, banker, and more to the community.
Tallapoosee Historical Museum
Located on Broadnax Street in Dadeville, the museum occupies two adjoining mercantile buildings packed with numerous artifacts, historical displays, and genealogical information for Tallapoosa County. The Tallapoosee Historical Museum is open free to the public Saturdays 10am-4pm.
The Discovery Center at Russell Crossroads
Located within Russell Crossroads on Highway 63, the Discovery Center describes the rich history of Lake Martin and the Russell family. The center includes a threedimensional pictorial timeline of the Lake Martin area and artifacts from the region.
The Mitchell House
Wellborn Muscle Car Museum
In the heart of downtown Alexander City, the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum preserves a slice of history from the 1960s and 1970s when American muscle cars ruled the road. The museum has a constant rotating inventory of classic cars and hot rods, including the nation’s largest high performance Dodge collection.
The Silo at Wind Creek State Park
a log barricade stretching across a bend in the Tallapoosa River. By the end of the day, most of the Red Sticks were dead.
Today, Horseshoe Bend National Military Park offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the Creek War, walk the battlefield, and enjoy recreational opportunities in a beautiful, historic location.
Martin Dam
Originally called Cherokee Bluffs Dam, Martin Dam was completed in 1926. At 168 feet tall and 2,000 feet wide, the reservoir created by the dam filled to capacity in 1928. At that time, Lake Martin was the largest manmade lake in the world.
Smith Mountain Fire Tower is managed by the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association and is open to the public for free.
The oldest pre-Civil War mansion in Tallapoosa County was built in 1835 by William Mandon Alexander Mitchell, M.D. in Dadeville. It was the birthplace of Sidney Z. Mitchell, famed industrialist/financier once reported to be the richest man in the United States. The secessionist firebrand William Lowndes Yancey spoke to a crowd from the balcony in 1860. Today, the Mitchell House, formerly named Ginkgo Manor, is used as a wedding and event venue.

The silo was built to store grain by farmer Sid Hertzfield in 1915. Today, it serves as an observation tower overlooking Lake Martin in Wind Creek State Park Interested in more historic locations?

Dive DOWNTOWN
...undeniable southern charm that flows from the shorelines to city streets.
Story by Katelyn Cotten
The Lake Martin area has undeniable southern charm that flows from the shorelines to city streets. Both Alexander City and Dadeville communities take delight in the casual vibes of ‘lake life’ and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation - champion bass fishing, birding, hiking, and kayaking to name a few. Even so, Alabama’s freshwater coast is home to some of the most charming downtowns that give life to an easygoing, small-town atmosphere.
Located just a few hours from metropolitan Atlanta and Birmingham, Lake Martin stretches across three counties - namely Tallapoosa. Highway 280 runs through the heart of Lake Martin, making it easy to access a variety of the area’s unique retailers, authentic cuisine, and unlimited activities
from any direction. In recent years, Lake Martin’s downtowns have surged with growth and vitality, attracting people from all over the world and welcoming a variety of new businesses.
Speaking of small-town atmosphere, there’s nothing quite like the Lake Martin area’s arts & entertainment. Downtown restaurants and venues regularly host performing artists from across the globe along with an abundance of local talent. From concerts and plays to art galleries and museums, both Alexander City and Dadeville offer unique cultural experiences.
Dive into downtown Alexander City or Dadeville to enjoy great food, green spaces, boutique shopping, arts, and entertainment for both residents and tourists.
DOWNTOWN ALEXANDER CITY
Alexander City boasts a rich and varied history that is evident throughout its downtown. Many of the buildings along Main Street date back to the early 20th-century, such as Carlisle’s Soda Fountain For over 100 years, Carlisle’s has been a hometown favorite, serving up sweet treats and signature drinks, like their old-fashioned limeades or classic Cherry Cokes. Just a short walk from the soda fountain, Wellborn Musclecar Museum preserves history with an ever-changing inventory of 1960s and 1970s classic cars, including the nation’s largest collection of high-performance Dodges.
If old-fashioned sodas and hot rods aren’t enough, The Square offers shopping with a unique southern twist in a French Quarter-inspired market and event venue. While shopping, check out Alana’s Place for hand-crafted coffee and Southernstyle sandwiches. Find a variety of other local boutiques along Main Street and throughout downtown. Haynie’s Shoes & Clothier offers selections for the whole family, whereas boutiques like Downtown Girl or Cloud Nine specialize in the latest fashion trends for women.

After hours, downtown Alexander City comes to life as an entertainment district. Try signature cocktails at The Local on 41 Main or a flight of house-made brews at Lake Martin Brewery. With over 10 dining locations in the downtown area, guests have a variety of options for signature dishes, incredible cocktails, live music and entertainment year-round. Enjoy seasonal Strand Sessions at Strand Park every first Thursday, in addition to multiple unique festivals and other special events held in the downtown green space.
DOWNTOWN DADEVILLE
The City of Dadeville’s downtown preserves history and tradition with a homespun flair. The Dadeville Square, as dubbed by locals, is home to a variety of historic landmarks dating back to the early 20th century, such as the newly renovated Miller Hotel. The hotel features Miller’s on Broadnax a full-service restaurant offering ‘southernly twisted’ menu items. Patrons can take a short walk to explore local history and artifacts at the Tallapoosee Historical Museum or the historic Mitchell House wedding and event venue. Pennington Park is another must-see when exploring downtown Dadeville, hosting events and

attractions year-round like live music, farmers markets, and unique displays.
Downtown Dadeville’s revitalization has sparked an emerging entertainment hotspot made complete with performance venues, art galleries, and unique retailers. Enjoy performances and musical selections at the Dadeville Performing Arts Center or Zazu’s Verandah Art lovers must check out Raining Dogs Studio & Gallery, which houses an assortment of hand-made local art pieces. Many other specialty boutiques and retailers can be found throughout Dadeville’s downtown area, such as Ellaby Boutique or Lake Martin Boutique, which offer a wide selection of clothing, home goods, and more.
Day or night, grab a bite downtown. Start the morning with freshly-baked pastry items from The Grand Bakery, or quench afternoon thirst at Tallapoosa Nutrition Check out The Funky Goat for lunch or dinner to sample a variety of signature craft cocktails and southern pub food with a ‘funky’ twist.

Shopping Local AT LAKE MARTIN

Take delight in a selection of specialty boutiques, artisanal shops, and secondhand stores across the Lake Martin area. Locally-owned businesses provide customers with a shopping experience made complete with southern hospitality and a variety of high-quality, unique items.
Story by Katelyn Cotten
There’s just something special about shopping in a small town. Each time I visit one of Lake Martin’s local retailers, I find myself captivated by warm, inviting feelings of familiarity, comfort, and ease. Maybe it’s the friendly assistance, carefully-curated selection, or the little confidence
boost I get when the salesclerk says, “Oh honey, that was made for you.”
