Discover Elgin’s
Architectural Tapestry
Embark on an architectural journey through Elgin and the surrounding area and discover some of the unique architectural gems! The Fox River Valley region includes the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Muirhead Farmhouse, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu temple, and the Painted Ladies houses around downtown Elgin.
Eager to explore the heart of Elgin first? Here are some fantastic places to begin your adventure:
Elgin History Museum: This museum at 360 Park St., is housed in an 1856 landmark building that was once part of the Elgin Academy. Designed in the Greek Revival style, the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. After extensive rehabilitation in the late 1980s, the building became home to the Elgin History Museum.
Inside, you can explore Elgin’s history through different exhibits. Some permanent displays feature the famous Elgin National Watch Company, the E. Maude and Carl
Parlasca Native American Collection, and Elgin Road Race memorabilia.
Throughout the year, the Elgin History Museum promotes a variety of events to further engage the local community. These include the Bluff City Cemetery Walk, an annual tradition since 1987. The Gifford Park Association hosts the Historic Elgin House Tour, which highlights beautiful historic homes, including several “Painted Ladies” Victorian houses, and other interesting buildings, while changing which

neighborhood it will spotlight every year.
While you’re at the museum, pick up a map for self-guided tours.
Elgin Public Museum: Located at 225 Grand Blvd., the museum boasts a unique status: it’s the oldest building in Illinois built specifically to be a museum that continues to serve its original purpose. Constructed in 1907, this architectural gem has also been recognized on the National Register of Historic Places for its Neo-Classical design and local historical importance. Inside, visitors can still appreciate the exquisite original details such as the oak woodwork, plaster wall ornamentation, and ceramic tile floors.
The museum offers exhibits and educational programs with natural history and cultural themes for all ages.
Discover a piece of Elgin’s past at the Elgin Fire Barn Museum (553 St. Charles St.). Housed in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this museum is filled with a wide range of firefighting artifacts. It’s a compelling look at the dedication of firefighters and the advancements in fire safety over the years.
Perhaps your exploration could extend slightly north and west? Consider a museum crawl that includes the Dundee Township Historical Society (426 Highland Ave., West Dundee) and the The Village of Bartlett Museums, including the Bartlett History Museum, which is housed on the first floor of Bartlett Village Hall and the Bartlett Depot Museum, located in the Village’s original train station, 100 W. Railroad Ave. They all offer unique insights into the distinct histories of these neighboring towns, providing a broader appreciation for the region’s heritage.
For a unique downtown experience, make your way to 164 Division St., the home
of the Elgin Professional Building. This eight-story high-rise, erected in 1928, showcases the intricate details of the Gothic Revival architectural style. While primarily serving as office space today, its eighth floor was transformed in 2007 into the Elgin Art Showcase. This performance and gallery offers a welcoming and intimate environment for local artists and performers to display their creativity.
While in downtown Elgin, be sure to stop by Al’s Cafe & Creamery, known for its specialty dishes and famous Burns malts and shakes. Al’s is located in the Ranstead Building, which was designed by Elgin Architect Smith Hoag and built in 1892. Lawyer and Kane County Judge J.W. Ranstead commissioned the building on DuPage Court. He practiced law on the second floor of the building, while the Elgin Savings and Loans operated on the first floor. Several businesses occupied the first floor until it was renovated in 1982 into what is now Al’s Cafe & Creamery.
Ready to hop in the car for a short road trip?
Returning to the architectural wonders within Elgin itself, prepare to be captivated by some more truly unique treasures.
On the campus of Judson University, you’ll find the elegant Harm A. Weber Administration Building. The white-pillared, red-brick Georgian mansion began as a private residence in 1925 before becoming the home to the university’s leadership offices.
Also gracing the Judson campus is the modern marvel of the Harm A. Weber Academic Center. Opened in 2007, this LEED Gold® certified building is recognized as one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally conscious structures in the nation.
Travel to West Dundee to visit Emmett’s Tavern & Brewing Co. Located on the corner in a building that’s on the National
Register of Historic Places, you’ll see a working brewery, followed by the dining room with its elegant bar and hardwood floors. If you like beer, you’re in for a treat, as Emmett’s has won several awards. The food is also good, with a wide selection of burgers and entrees that make for an affordable and tasty stop.
BARTLETT, HAMPSHIRE AND BURLINGTON
Then expand your exploration to another breathtaking architectural marvel: the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandi. Located at 1851 Pramukh Swami Road in Bartlett, this traditional Hindu place of worship was built using hand-carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone. Sitting on an expansive 27 acres, BAPS is open to visitors daily from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. While the dress code is casual, guests are asked to respect their guidelines, which include no sleeveless shirts, shorts, or short skirts (skirts should fall below the knee). Be sure to check the BAPS website for more information before your visit.
Now, journey to Hampshire to discover a piece of American architectural history: the Muirhead Farmhouse. Designed in 1950 by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the 3,200-square-foot home is the only known farmhouse designed and built by Wright during his lifetime. The Muirhead family opens their home for public tours on select dates each month from May through October. Public tours take approximately 90 minutes to complete.

Helping kids and families learn about nature is the bread-and-butter for two area nature centers as well as many of the parks programs. Visit Hawthorne Hill Nature Center in Elgin and the Bartlett Nature Center in Bartlett for programs that can change each week during the summer months.
Hawthorne Hill Nature Center is an excellent place to relax, recreate and explore the natural world, providing two ponds, a nature play area, about two miles of looped trails, and an interactive nature center. At the Bartlett Nature Center, families will learn about turtles, birdwatching, fishing, becoming animal ambassadors and astronomy in special programs.

A Creative Journey Through the Elgin Area
The Arts Around Town
Beyond the scenic trails and river views, the Elgin area invites exploration of its diverse creative landscape.
The journey into the creative heart of the Elgin area begins in downtown Elgin itself, where a stroll reveals more than just storefronts. Often, the very windows of its businesses transform into unexpected canvases, showcasing vibrant and dynamic window murals. These public art displays add a spontaneous splash of color and creativity to the urban landscape, turning everyday walks into impromptu art viewings. Don’t miss the windows in December during the city’s annual Holly Days festival.
Speaking of: don’t forget to check out the window mural at the Elgin Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at 60 S. Grove Ave., Elgin.
Additionally, downtown Elgin features more permanent sculptures and mural paintings, among other media. This broader collection of artistic expressions is thoughtfully curated and maintained by the Elgin Arts Cultural Commission,
ensuring that art enriches the urban environment for all to enjoy. Many of these artistic treasures can be discovered and appreciated during a leisurely stroll or bike ride along the scenic Fox River Bike Trail, offering a unique way to engage with the local culture. Visit our website at ExploreElginArea.com to see the Public Art Walking Tour map of all the art spots in downtown Elgin.
There are also several spaces in the Elgin area that help further the art culture:
n Side Street Studio Arts, founded in 2013 at 15 Ziegler Court in Elgin, actively fosters engagement within the local arts scene by offering inclusive access to resources for exhibition, performance, education, and advocacy. This organization also presents the Area 22 Arts, Crafts & Oddities Fair, an event held in early August at 62 S. Riverside Drive, Elgin, that blends fine arts, crafts, and unique oddities. Side Street Studio Arts also hosts Fringe Fest at the end of September which includes more than a week of art displays, workshops and theater.
n The Elgin Artspace Lofts stands as a testament to the area’s dedication to fostering a thriving artistic community. This unique mixed-use development provides 55 affordable live/work spaces for artists and their families, alongside commercial space for arts-related businesses and nonprofits. With its focus on creating a supportive environment for artists, including features like a resident gallery and easy access to public transportation, Elgin Artspace Lofts is a vital component of the region’s artistic landscape.
n Adding another layer to Elgin’s unique artistic tapestry is The Funky Rooster Tattoo and Art Studio. This licensed professional tattoo shop transcends the traditional concept of a body art studio by doubling as a vibrant little art gallery. Original paintings adorn the walls and all available for purchase. Beyond the captivating artwork on display, The Funky Rooster also offers art prints, distinctive jewelry, artist-designed t-shirts by Jose Manuel, colorful folk art from Mexico, playful stickers, and an array of other intriguing finds.
'Communication Station' mural
n And don’t forget Oddball Arts Labs, the nonprofit artist-based organization created to advance the presence of the arts in the Fox Valley and greater Chicagoland area. Oddball Art Labs has held exhibitions including Twisted Toys gallery exhibition, celebrating the strange and dangerous toys from childhood and the Monsters, Myths and Mutations, featuring unique displays and documentation of never before seen creatures, in The Robin and Mark Seigle Gallery at Elgin ArtSpace Lofts.
n In nearby Bartlett, Arts in Bartlett, located at 215 S Main St., aims to enrich the community by providing access to the arts and hosting varied events. This organization also features a gallery showcasing the work of local artists. Additionally, Arts in Bartlett organizes the annual Global Arts Festival, a free community celebration of cultural diversity intended to broaden understanding, encourage acceptance, and build unity. This event is typically held over a weekend in June at the Jim Jensen Pavilion in Bartlett Park District, situated at 620 W. Stearns Road.
n A short trip to neighboring East Dundee reveals two notable murals: one at 11 N. Jackson St. depicting local Fox River wildlife, and another titled “The Promise of Spring,”
featuring a stained glass-inspired design, located at the Village Hall, 120 Barrington Ave. The murals are the result of the East Dundee Arts Council’s initiative to enhance the village’s visual appeal and foster a stronger sense of place. The Art Council also organizes the annual Black and White Art Show, which invites local artists to explore monochromatic themes, sometimes with a specific accent color. The Arts Council handles submissions, jurying, and the coordination of displaying the artwork in various downtown businesses, creating an art walk experience for the community.

From captivating theater productions and live music encompassing all tastes to dynamic rock concerts and inspiring art exhibitions, you’ll discover a wealth of cultural experiences. Here are key venues where you can immerse yourself in these performances.
n HEMMENS CULTURAL CENTER
This theater at 45 Symphony Way, nestled along Elgin’s beautiful Riverwalk in the Center City area, offers an intimate setting to experience captivating performances throughout the year.
As the home of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Hemmens recently welcomed Grammy-nominated Broadway star Courtney Reed for a memorable performance with the ESO, as well as Grammy-nominated pianist Joyce Yang, and legendary group The Miracles, formerly Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.
Besides music, other acts that have taken the stage include magician Leon Etienne and his show Magic Rocks, 360 ALLSTARS, dubbed a “non-stop energy packed urban circus,” complete with dancing, beat boxing, acrobatics, BMX biking and more, and stand-up comedian Michael Palascak, who has appeared on Comedy Central, Last Comic Standing, and other favorite latenight shows.
Beyond its main stage shows, the Hemmens
Cultural Center also offers a dose of laughter when GreenRoom Productions, a talented local improv and sketch comedy group, takes the stage for their First Fridays Improv shows.
Adding another dimension to Elgin’s artistic offerings is the annual Elgin Short Film Festival. Celebrating its 17th year in 2025, this anticipated event takes place in September at the Hemmens Cultural Center Main Stage Theatre. It serves as a dynamic platform for filmmakers to share their compelling stories through the powerful medium of short-form cinema, further enriching the area’s cultural tapestry and offering a unique cinematic experience for audiences.
n ELGIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE ARTS CENTER
The ECC Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, features two intimate theaters and presents a range of music, theatre, and comedy performances throughout the year.
Past musical performances have included the likes of Ben Folds, Grammy-winning recording artist Rosanne Cash, daughter of
country music legend Johnny Cash, the award-winning contemporary boy band experience, The Boy Band Project, Sons of Seredip, a Billboardcharting classical-crossover quartet, and the Mystical Arts of Tibet tours by the monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery.

n THE ELGIN ART SHOWCASE
Located on the eighth floor of the historic Professional Building at 164 Division St., the Elgin Art Showcase serves as a versatile performance and visual art space. In the past, the Elgin
Art Showcase has hosted productions by the Iambe Theatre Ensemble (“Good People”), the Elgin Theatre Company ( “Moonlight and Magnolias,” “The Christmas Express,” “The Value of Moscow”), and Independent Players (“The Outsiders”), and Janus Theatre Company (“The Revolutionists,” “Life Sucks”). Additionally, the Elgin Fringe Festival utilizes the Elgin Art Showcase as one of its venues. This festival features a variety of performance art, including dance, theater, comedy, and music, with artists selected through a lottery system.
n ROOKIES ROCHAUS
At 96 W. Main St., in West Dundee, Rookies Rochaus brings live music to the stage several nights each week. Housed in a historic building that first opened in 1910 as The Crystal Theater, hosting vaudeville and later cinema, the space was renovated in the early 2000s to become The Clearwater Theater. After a successful run featuring diverse musical genres until 2011, it was purchased in 2012 by a local businessman who undertook several years of renovations, ultimately reopening it as Rookies Rochaus. Today, it offers a versatile setting with a stage, theater-style seating, and a bar area for an engaging audience experience.
n THE LODGE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
New to the arts scene is The Lodge Performing Arts Center at 18 Villa Court in downtown Elgin. This intimate space will showcase several productions each year for an audience of up to 130 each show.
Where Elgin Creates
HEMMENS CULTURAL CENTER
Following a $14.4 million renovation completed in the spring of 2025, the Hemmens Cultural Center now boasts modern amenities while honoring its esteemed history. The extensive three-year project introduced key improvements such as accessible main floor restrooms, a more prominent and convenient box office, a sheltered patron drop-off, and expanded storage. A highlight of the revitalized Hemmens is the new reception area featuring an outdoor balcony that provides stunning vistas of the beautifully reimagined Civic Center Plaza.

PRIMITIVES BY OLDE LADY MORGANBARTLETT
Celebrating 30 years in business, Bartlett-based primitive artist Marie “Olde Lady” Morgan has become known throughout the Midwest for her one-of-a-kind primitive dolls, each one a nod to an earlier time. Her seasonal creations include bunnies, snowmen, angels, witches, Santas, pillows and “Goofy Jacks,” handcrafted decorative pumpkins – each hand-stitched or hand-painted and flourished with a dried pumpkin stem. Primitives by Olde Lady Morgan has a dedicated shop in Prestige Creative Markets showcasing a carefully curated mix of primitive antiques, great vintage finds and handcrafted creations for “story-loving souls.”
MILK HOUSE ICE CREAM - PINGREE GROVE
The renovation of the farm by owners Clint and Brook wasn’t just about updating old buildings; it was about bringing a dream to life. Motivated by Brook’s love for baking and ice cream, and Clint’s deep-rooted interest in gardening and local farms, they conceived a sweet idea. The farm’s old milk house would be transformed into an ice cream shop—a place where generations of family history and recipes could meet the bounty of local produce and dairy. The result? Truly original and delicious ice cream. This innovative approach has quickly become a hit, earning the affection of both those visiting and those who call this area home, as it beautifully blends tradition with the best of local ingredients.
