Meet Us in Charleston

Whether seeking historical charm, boutique-style venues, highly acclaimed restaurants or newly renovated event spaces, the Charleston area is the perfect destination to host your next gathering.

As an award-winning destination year after year, it is no wonder that the Charleston region has climbed its way to the top of your list. Experience the charm of the Holy City first hand through its rich history, stunning architecture, exquisite cuisine and warm hospitality. Venues of all capacities can be found scattered throughout the Lowcountry with amenities that meet each group’s needs.

Opt in for a new experience and host your event at one of our unique venues, or if you’re looking for more of a traditional setting, there’s no shortage of properties for you to choose. With an emphasis on smaller groups, the Charleston area as a destination is ideal for those looking to create a more personal gathering where sites can be tailored to meet the needs of each group. Imagine hosting a board meeting for 15 in a private museum home

overlooking White Point Gardens, or hosting dinner for 100 people at the very venue where America’s first president, George Washington, dined. “Charleston offers a diverse range of experiences across various genres. Along with versatile options for meetings of all sizes, the region itself is rich with unique pursuits and hidden treasures” said Chris Hendrix, Vice President of Group Sales for Explore Charleston.

From Gate to Guestroom

Centrally located is the Charleston International Airport (CHS). The airport’s ever-growing route map allows travelers the option to choose from over 40 non-stop destinations on 14 airlines.

From the moment visitors step o the plane they are greeted with warm hospitality. Friendly faces are always found welcoming guests.

Getting to Charleston International Airport is more convenient, enjoyable and affordable than ever before. As bleisure (business + leisure) travel continues to increase in popularity, we’re seeing attendees arrive early or extend their stay to enjoy the cuisine, culture and charm the Lowcountry has to offer. Take advantage of the vast range of activities and experiences available for both group outings and family vacations. Book a custom walking tour with Bulldog Tours and deep dive into the history of the Holy City, stroll through the Charleston City Market where you can find local vendors eager to share their stories or opt in for evening sea breezes and dine with Spiritline Cruises as you cruise throughout the Charleston Harbor.

Year a er year, Charleston is applauded as the best destination in the country by national magazine editors and readers alike. Last summer Travel + Leisure readers recognized the city as the best destination in the country for the 12th straight year. It was crowned the best small city by those who follow Condé Nast Traveler. It also topped Southern Living’s list of the 15 friendliest cities in the South.

No

matter the time of year or frequency of visit, there’s always something new to discover in the Charleston area.

A Place

A singular sense of place.

There’s no better way to start your day than to spend mornings walking or biking through the historic district. Your guests will be in awe as they wander the quiet morning streets and find pastel homes with window boxes boasting vibrant colors, shutters painted Charleston Green, cobblestone streets, piazzas with waterfront views and seasonal flora giving off the sweetest aroma.

A er a full day of

meetings,

there’s no better way to unwind than with good company and good food.

Savor the Lowcountry’s one-of-a-kind cuisine and spend evenings dining at restaurants with world-renowned chefs, who are eager to share their flavor combinations and local takes on traditional southern dishes. “It is a destination that offers guests the opportunity to explore all there is to offer– a vibrant downtown, rich history across the region, nearby beaches and historic tours,” explains Dean Andrews, Principal of Easton Porter Group.

Consider Cannon Green, a historic 1840s-era venue located in the Cannonborough-Elliottborough neighborhood. Situated near a swell of accommodation options, it’s an easy walk for an off-site meeting, lunch or reception and a draw for those seeking board retreats, corporate meetings and networking events. Easton Porter Group has transformed the property into an award-winning restaurant and events venue with natural sunlight, modern amenities and in-house rentals. The Garden Room is centered around the original facade of a 19th century Charleston single house with a warehouse space restored to feature the original king trusses. The courtyard, also available to rent, is beautifully lined with palmettos and fountains offering a more intimate gathering space, perfect for cocktail hour receptions.

Zero George, another property within the Easton Porter Group, has been elegantly renovated from a historic home to a boutique hotel offering sixteen lush guest rooms that honor the building’s 1804 bones and graceful architecture with measured, timeless design. When speaking with Andrews and the additions that he and his team have made he adds that, “Charleston has strategically emerged as a destination for international business investment and tourism with sought-after leisure experiences. And that includes locally based industry experts who create and deliver memorable meetings of the highest caliber.” Among them is Destination South Meetings + Events, a meeting and event production company that provides event experiences across the Southeast.

The Destination South team focuses on unique experiences that clients cannot get elsewhere. From design to detailed itineraries, the Destination South team highlights the area’s unique history while tailoring various activities custom to each group. When speaking with Kate MacCoy, Managing Director of the Coastal Division, she shared that the most memorable thing for her is taking those pieces of history and making them new, relevant and fun. “I want attendees to come back. I want them to feel how hospitable and charming the locals are.” Sharing local experiences with visitors is what makes the Charleston area a special destination.

Venture

beyond the historic district –there’s so much to uncover!

A Host Of Places

Nestled along the Cooper River you find the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina. This waterfront property offers guests three restaurants, a full-service marina, and resort-style pools and spa to lounge and relax. Indulge in coastal chic accommodations, unparalleled amenities and breathtaking views. Offering more than 6,100 square feet of indoor meeting space, 34,000 square feet of outdoor meeting space and exceptional dining and catering options, Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina has the capacity to host groups of all sizes.

Looking for sea breezes and salty air? With five area beaches, there’s an island community perfectly suited for each group. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, Isle of Palms has been a favorite outpost for generations. Home to Wild Dunes Resort, this charming island community offers a variety of activities for everyone in your group. “We really embrace all the rich culture that Charleston has to offer by bringing it here,” said Wild Dunes Resort, Managing Director, Terri Haack. Activities change with client interests and trends and while working with Destination South, guests are given options such as sweetgrass basket weaving, beach-side oyster roasts, and evening events that highlight award-winning chefs in the area.

Centrally located in North Charleston, the Charleston Area Convention Center campus puts everything you need for a successful event in one easily accessible area. With 77,000 square feet of divisible Exhibit Hall space, the layout can transform to suit most any group’s needs. There are a plethora of hotels at varying price points within walking distance of the Convention Center, making it an attractive offering for groups that span generations. The adjacent Tanger Outlets, is home to more than a dozen restaurants from sit down dining to take-out, barbeque to international cuisine and everything in between. Shuttles are available to transport your guests to & from the Charleston International Airport.

Having It All

Widely praised on the national culinary scene, there isn’t a restaurant in the Charleston area where you’ll leave hungry. Enjoy fine dining restaurants such as Hall’s Chophouse, The Ocean Room at Kiawah Island Golf Resort or Charleston Grill at The Charleston Place. Opt in for something more casual such as Leon’s Oyster Shop, Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ and Mex1 Coastal Cantina

Many restaurants also offer private group dining, various catering options and unique venue spaces.

Charleston is a food lover’s paradise. As any food enthusiast would agree, there are few experiences that match the thrill of walking through the gates of a culinary festival where world-class chefs and local farmers converge to celebrate the rich avors of the Lowcountry.

Walking through the city and its surrounding areas during the Charleston Food & Wine Classic, the atmosphere was electric. This inaugural event offered a curated mix of educational seminars, hands-on experiences and, of course, some of the best food and drink the region has to offer. From the moment you arrive, it’s clear that you’re in for something extraordinary. The event spans several days, with itineraries designed to fully immerse attendees in the Lowcountry.

Cooking demonstrations were hosted at the Gaillard Center, where local chefs partnered with celebrity personalities to show guests how they prepare some of their iconic southern dishes. Each demonstration encouraged crowd participation, allowing attendees to ask questions and interact with the chefs and celebrities on stage.

To give guests a true taste of the Lowcountry, curated shop-around experiences were led by Editor in Chief of Travel + Leisure magazine, Jacqui Gifford. Jacqui took guests to some of her favorite Charleston-based brands. Including Croghan’s Jewel Box, the oldest family jeweler in Charleston and The Tiny Tassel, a women-owned boutique brimming with vibrant colors and the season’s latest trends. This experience was designed to showcase the diverse talent in the Charleston area and how their unique stories contribute to the history of Charleston.

One of the most anticipated events of the festival was the Lowcountry Tailgate. This event paid homage to the southern college football tradition of tailgating prior to the start of football games. The Food & Wine Classic Charleston took place in the middle of college football season thus the timing of this event made southern style tailgating the ideal theme.

In 2024, the Charleston Classic team partnered with local motorcoach companies to transport guests from downtown Charleston to The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection, on the banks of the Kiawah River. The experience began the moment guests boarded the coach as they were greeted with breathtaking views of Spanish moss-draped oak tree canopies all along the beautiful drive to Kiawah River. Upon arrival, guests were welcomed with live bluegrass music and the enticing aroma of a local favorite, Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ, wafting through the air, accompanied by stunning views of the Lowcountry marsh. The Dunlin’s group event venue, “The River Barns”, is where the evening festivities took place. The Shippon, their most generous indoor space, housed a rectangle bar with food stations and table seating. Next door, the Lime House hosted cooking demonstrations from celebrity and local chefs. On the main lawn, guests were treated to a variety of activities including corn hole, live music, marsh side cocktails and the fan favorite - watching the top college football games on giant outdoor screens!

The night didn’t end there. As attendees were transported back to the peninsula, the nightlife scene in Charleston was just beginning. Many guests stayed at The Dewberry where they could enjoy a nightcap on the tallest rooftop, offering stunning views of the peninsula. Others chose the speakeasy-styled bar at The Spectator where mixologists crafted seasonal beverages making it the perfect spot to unwind after a full day of events.

RESTORATIVE POWER

With a focus on restoration, Patrick Properties has curated a collection of historic venues for special events. Located throughout the Charleston peninsula, their portfolio includes the William Aiken House, Lowndes Grove, Parcel 32, American Theater and the River House. Each of these properties are unique in their own way. Plan a special dinner at Parcel 32, host a roaring 20’s night at the American Theater, take in the William Aiken House’s impressive art collection during a garden party, or be awed by an amazing sunset during a festive gala at Lowndes Grove.

“We want people to get a feel for what the Charleston area is— a warm smile and a genuine compliment; hospitable, authentic service; and just being a good person,” says Kate MacCoy,

Managing Director at Destination South Meetings + Events.

ARTFUL GATHERINGS

There’s an art to good living. No destination balances work and play quite like the Charleston area. It’s the ideal canvas for hosting parties and events of any sort. It’s been this way for centuries, literally.

Taking you back to the 1700s, Henrietta Johnson, a Charleston-based painter, distinguished herself as the first female portrait artist in America. In 1735, opera landed in Charleston. The Dock Street Theatre was indeed the first building in America built exclusively for theatrical performances, and now houses Charleston Stage Company which produces thrilling Broadway quality shows throughout the year. By 1748, the second oldest private lending library in the country was formed, which now serves as a lively gathering for today’s most talked-about writers and thinkers, The Charleston Library Society

These are just a few examples of Charleston’s rich history. As a destination telling stories dating back to 1670, there’s no better way to amplify the essence of the Lowcountry than through the people and the businesses that have helped play a key role in shaping it.

Since 1977, Spoleto Festival USA takes place across the Charleston region each spring. The 17-day festival showcases awe-inspiring performances in Charleston’s historic theaters, churches, and outdoor venues. You can experience a variety of interactive art such as opera and theater to dance and an eclectic mix of music merging both renowned artists and emerging talents.

Experience grand-scale opera, stunning choreography, and captivating new dramas. Then unwind at the end of each night at one of Charleston’s beloved art hotels. Every meal is an event in itself. Whether fresh from the dock or picked from the garden, there are endless flavors waiting to be uncovered.

One of the standout features of the Charleston area’s culinary scene is its commitment to local sourcing and farm-totable dining. Being on the coast, local chefs have access to an array of fresh seafood like shrimp, oysters, blue crabs and fish. But the farm-to-fork philosophy goes beyond the

ocean–it’s also about sourcing the finest local produce from the Lowcountry’s rural areas. By doing so, not only do dinner guests receive the freshest ingredients but it also supports the local economy and aids in preservation of the region’s agricultural heritage while fostering a sense of community between local farmers and chefs.

FROM FIELD TO FORK

EXPLORING CHARLESTON’S RICH CULINARY HERITAGE

With the diversity and abundance of local farmers and gifted chefs, the Charleston culinary scene is able to thrive. The unparalleled blending of this heritage with the creativity of today’s chefs has been recognized nationally, too. Year after year, the region’s acclaimed cuisine has been instrumental in Charleston’s regular appearance at the top of destination rankings, and its restaurants, chefs and sommeliers have garnered numerous James Beard Awards and nominations.

When these fabled flavors converge with the city’s legendary hospitality, breaking bread is nothing short of spectacular. As a result, any Charleston culinary venture with team members or colleagues is sure to strengthen connections. At the same time, the excellence of every menu signifies to all invited that their contribution is greatly valued.

Throughout the Charleston area, chefs and restaurateurs continually highlight local gems, blending time-honored traditions with fresh interpretations that cater to the tastes of discerning, adventurous diners.
Taste and place are stirred together in ways that elevate and transform any singular visit.

A Taste of Tradition

In his role as Chief Executive Officer of Queen Street Hospitality Group, Jonathan Kish oversees the operations of restaurants and event venues comprising 82 Queen, 82 Queen Events and Sweetgrass Barn

The original 82 Queen menu introduced dishes influenced by African, French, Caribbean and Anglo-Saxon fare. The fusion of these culturally diverse flavors led to the rise of a culinary genre that had been undefined and is now heralded as Lowcountry cuisine.

“Lowcountry food is really paying tribute to local food, and doing it in a ne way. We have stayed true to that since 1982. The menus evolved over the years, but there are certain dishes that will never go away,” said Kish.

Among the hallmark offerings is She Crab Soup, discovered in a cookbook and resurrected. It has since become emblematic of Lowcountry cuisine.

Sea to Table

Book a unique experience and head to the dock with Casual Crabbing with Tia. Attendees will learn to catch their own blue crabs with Charleston native, Tia Clark, while she shares her story and what growing up in the Lowcountry was like. After your outing, head to Charleston Crab House with your freshly caught crabs and they’ll cook them for you!

At Charleston Crab House, or one of their other familyowned restaurants, try Charleston-driven dishes such as shrimp & grits, crab cakes, she crab soup or even a Lowcountry boil! It doesn’t end there, desserts true to the South like banana pudding are available. And, you can’t forget the sweet tea.

Scott Larymore, Owner and Chief Executive Officer for the restaurants, said that when it comes to meetings and other gatherings, they can do just about everything. Their event spaces can accommodate corporate groups, business functions, culinary tours and other celebrations. These can take the form of traditional set menus with wine pairings, informal family-style new designs, buffets, cocktail parties, crab cracks and oyster roasts.

Preserving Local Culture

Chef Kevin Mitchell is a culinary force in the Charleston area. His passion for local ingredients and southern cuisine has made him a celebrated figure in the Lowcountry’s food scene.

Named the first African American Chef Instructor at the Culinary Institute of Charleston, Chef Mitchell continues to invest his time to help mold future chefs. “While higher education wasn’t an option for my Ancestors, here I stand, holding a master’s degree in Southern Studies and telling the truth of their stories. I am hopeful that I have made them proud,” says Chef Mitchell. Whether he’s teaching the art of shrimp and grits or introducing historical context on traditional recipes, Chef Mitchell’s approach is rooted in a commitment to preservation, sustainability, and a love for future generations.

“While higher education wasn’t an option for my Ancestors, here I stand, holding a master’s degree in Southern Studies and telling the truth of their stories. I am hopeful that I have made them proud.”

The Thornley Campus at Trident Technical College, where Chef Mitchell spends his time teaching, offers a wide range of flexible conference spaces. Key venues include the 15,000-square-foot College Center, perfect for large conferences and banquets, and smaller more intimate spaces like the Executive Boardroom, which is perfect for groups of 20 to 50 people. Additional on-campus facilities include the 200-seat Amphitheater as well as several 5,000 square foot event spaces. With full A/V capabilities, on-site tech support, free parking, and dedicated event coordinators to handle the details, the Thornley Campus provides a unique atmosphere for any gathering.

THE SEGRA CLUB AT RILEY PARK

The Segra Club at Riley Park sits gloriously above Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, giving you unparalleled views of the Ashley River marsh and the home field of the Charleston RiverDogs, as you relax in climate-controlled comfort. The space can be easily converted into your dream venue for weddings, receptions, social events and corporate events, including holiday parties and business presentations. You can feast on custom menus from RiverDogs executive chef Josh Shea and imaginative beverage options to make planning your event easy, elegant and delicious.

PALMETTO CARRIAGE WORKS

Q: Can Palmetto Carriage Works accommodate large groups for tours?

A: Yes! We can accommodate up to 200 people at once. As each group’s needs vary, we recommend calling to discuss the details well in advance of your desired tour date: 843-723-8145.

Q: What sets Palmetto Carriage Works apart as a tour operator in Charleston?

A: The Big Red Barn has been a staple in the Charleston community for decades. The fully accessible loading dock makes our tours an easy option for all levels of mobility. Our barn is truly unique, offering the public a sneak peek into our day-to-day operations. Our staff is happy to answer questions and introduce you to our four-legged employees.

Q: How are the horses cared for on a day-to-day basis?

A: Our horses are like family to us. The city mandates that a certain amount of care is given to each animal, however we go above and beyond these requirements. Each horse has its temperature taken after every tour, ensuring their safety while working. Each horse gets approximately 30 minutes of rest between tours and an endless amount of love from our guides and barn hands all day long.

DESTINATION SOUTH MEETINGS + EVENTS

Destination South Meetings + Events, a DMC Network Company, is a destination management, experiential event planning, and meeting management collective with a legacy of ground-breaking events. We asked our client Jessy Risley for a quick Q+A on her recent Charleston event planning experience.

Jessy, can you describe your vision for the Chairman’s Club events?

As a planner, my goal is always to create unforgettable experiences that leave lasting impressions on every attendee. Our event was just before the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, so I thought, why not bring a bit of that exclusive experience directly to our attendees?

How did you feel our team captured and executed your vision?

The Destination South team went beyond just executing the event - they brought my vision to life in ways that far exceeded my expectations.  All my ideas were considered, and the team brought a wealth of creative solutions to the table.

What was your favorite aspect of the event?

The highlight of the culinary experience was the Lee Bros, Matt and Ted Lee. The local James Beard Award winners also emceed the evening, providing an insightful education on Charleston’s vibrant food scene.

What advice would you give other planners or companies looking to host an event in Charleston?

My advice? Don’t hesitate—partner with Destination South.  Their deep knowledge of the local culture, vendors, and venues ensures that every detail is thoughtfully executed. They have an unmatched ability to bring creative ideas to life and navigate any last-minute changes, which is invaluable for planners.

CHARLESTON IN THE OPEN AIR

New Adventures in Nature & Beyond

There is always something new to do or see in the Charleston Area. Its graceful balance of cosmopolitan elegance and natural beauty plays out in dreamy days between its two wondrous worlds.

The Charleston area is a destination that forever unfolds in novel experiences, the kind that brings limitless wonder and delight to group interactions. It’s no wonder the area o en welcomes groups back a er their rst foray.

The region’s multitude of offerings that are focused on unique outdoor activities plays a major role in why groups choose this destination. On Purpose and Nature Adventures offer activities tailored for groups covering land and its surrounding waters.

At On Purpose, team-building activities enhance skill development through entertainment options like the popular scavenger hunt, The Holy City Wanderer. The hunt starts at Waterfront Park or Marion Square and immerses participants in the historic district’s rich past while teammates strengthen their connection as they scour local sites chasing clues.

Water adventures beckon as well. Nature Adventures creates activities that challenge participants, while also providing access to local waterways such as Shem Creek. During a kayaking adventure, participants encounter a variety of challenges that help build team spirit “On the water, we stretch their comfort zone, while embracing the beauty of the waterway,” says Founder of On Purpose Adventures, Ben-Jamin Toy.

Outdoor activities in the Lowcountry offer new experiences for attendees. Whether looking for breaks during corporate retreats or additional bleisure activities, there’s something for everyone.

ON THE HARBOR

Sandlapper Tours focuses its boat tours on Charleston Harbor while also passing locations such as Morris Island, a strategic location in the American Civil War, and hosting festivities like Lowcountry seafood boils. The tour takes groups near some of the top sites around the area, among them being Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier and the Battery, with its magnificent promenade of grand homes.

Sandlapper Tours can customize excursions to focus on nature, history or a combination of both. Choose to set sail around sunset or focus on a themed event such as ghost and private tours.

“To see the city from the water is a must-do, whether you go with us or somebody else,” says Captain Bryan Collins. “You can’t really experience Charleston as a whole without at least experiencing it on the water.”

PARK PLACES

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) oversees 11,000 acres of land, offering an array of options for outdoor enthusiasts. From pristine beaches and iconic fishing piers to tranquil woodland meadows, CCPRC provides diverse venues ideal for events and gatherings. “For visitors looking to experience the natural beauty of the Lowcountry, a Charleston County Park is the perfect spot,” said their Director of Marketing Renee Dickinson.

In collaboration with the non-profit Friends of McLeod, the Commission also manages the McLeod Plantation Historic Site, which was constructed in 1851. Today, this 37-acre site serves as a significant Gullah-Geechee heritage landmark, carefully preserved for its cultural and historical value. The site features a riverside pavilion, a grand oak allee and the ancient McLeod Oak, thought to be over 600 years old.

ENLIGHTENED EXCURSIONS

Giving back can be a group-friendly endeavor, too.

Since 1992, Coastal Expeditions has led groups of all types, even those that can accommodate up to 200 people. “It’s a great way to get out and be really close to the environment, to be active and see the dolphins and the seabirds and shore birds up close,” said Captain Chris Crolley. The company’s mission is to connect people to the eco-system around them, while also being of service to the community.

Among the activities offered are kayaking, dolphin expeditions, sunset harbor cruises and crabbing. Throughout these winding waterways, you can spot over 300 different species of birds that are seasonal in the Lowcountry, These species including pelicans, egrets, herons, oyster catchers and black skimmers.

In addition to the tour, groups have the opportunity to assist with conservation efforts with the Coastal Expedition Foundation. “It allows them to enjoy their time with us in a much deeper way,” said Crolley. The Foundation’s mission is to ensure experiences with wildlife and the habitats we all share are accessible for all, and to provide opportunities for us to channel our collective passion for the environment into preserving and visiting these ecosystems for generations to come.
