Buckeye Lake from article in 1980's.

Buckeye Lake is getting set for another busy season. Boaters, vacationers, fun seekers will be flocking into our area from miles around and few will think of the history of the Lake.

The State Legislature in May of 1894, changed the name of the "pond" from Licking Reservoir to Buckeye Lake and made it a public park. From that time forward, its development as a recreation ground of central Ohio was rapid -- state lands were leased, private lands were opened as cottage sites and picnic ground and the Lake as we know it was on its way.

But before that, what? Christopher Gist was the first white man to visit his "pond" away back in 1751, and I don't think there is a spot today that bears his name. Elnathan Scofield surveyed the Refugee Tract for the federal government in 1801 and his map was used by the canal surveyors when they laid out the Ohio Canal.

By their figuring the Licking Reservoir was to supply water for the canal north to the Licking valley and south to Canal Winchester. An earthen wall was built along the northern and western edges and the first canal boat to pass over this part of the canal did so in 1831.

The men behind the

project soon realized that they needed more water for the Reservoir so a feeder was planned. This ran from the Licking River at Kirkersville to the western end of the Lake, but unfortunately the water in the feeder refused to run uphill, so they had to make other plans. Finally, more of the "pond" was dammed up.

When the Reservoir was done, it cost about $200,000. But, the worst of the work was yet to come. It involved cutting the canal south to Millersport and to Canal Winchester.

The laborers on this Deep Cut lived at a town call Monticello, a village founded about 1803 just south of Millersport. The center of this village was near the turn on Route 204, about one half mile south of Millersport.

The town, at its height, claimed a population of 1500, with a lively life around Reed's tavern. It had a post office from 1827 to 1833, but when the canal was completed, the village started to decline. The buildings fell down or rotted away, and today not a sign stands to mark this former bustling village.

The opposite opening of the canal was at the North Lock, near present day Sellar's Point. Here the Minthorn House which is still standing,

The owners of the plotted town of Thornport really expected the great things of this little village. Two warehouses were built, mills, a tavern but that hard trip across the Lake delayed the development. So, the men got together and decided that what was needed was a "power boat" to haul the boats from Sellar's Point to Thornport.

The "wonder of the age" was a broad-nosed scow propelled by paddle wheels which were driven by two horses walking about a horse-motor, which was said to have developed more noise than power. So, it was abandoned and that hard task of "poling the boats" was once again resumed.

It was during that time that the Black Diamond, one of the boats making the trip to Thornport with coal for the Simpson Mills, ran upon a stump, turned crossways of the channel and sank. Her memory is preserved in the name of Black Diamond Point on the north shore of the Lake today --the site of the wreck.

But, as the railroads increased in mileage and efficiency, the canals declined and were gradually abandoned. The last canal boat through made the trip in the late 1890s (or so Bill Rosebraugh old me). The railroads brought their lines to both ends of the Lake and on Sundays brought many people here to fish. The Ohio Electric Company boosted the northern shore by brining thousands in on the In-

Today, rowboats, canoes, speedboats, sailboats, in fact boats of all kinds go speeding along the shores and around the 21 islands that are located in the Lake. The oldest boat on the Lake is the ALERT which was owned by Del Fisher Boat Line. It was first a steamboat and then was changed to a power boat. I saw that boat several years ago in storage, but the fate of it today, I cannot say.

Yes, we will be hosting thousands of people this year on our Lake and as they go zipping across the water, they'll never know, and perhaps they don't care, of the great history that made this Lake what it is. But, we who live here and love the Lake, like to stop once in awhile and recall those "day of long ago.:

Governor DeWine Declares April 20-26 as Ohio State Parks Week

Spring into adventure as Ohio celebrates its 76 free, family-friendly state parks

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has officially proclaimed Sunday, April 20 through Saturday, April 26 as Ohio State Parks Week, celebrating the natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and conservation efforts that make Ohio’s 76 state parks treasured destinations for families and adventurers alike.

“Our state parks are among Ohio’s greatest assets,” said Governor DeWine. “They are open every day, offer free admission, and provide wonderful experiences from peaceful hikes and wildlife watching to boating, fishing, and family camping. I encourage all Ohioans to take time this week to explore and enjoy Ohio’s beautiful state parks.”

Administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Ohio’s state parks span forests, lakeshores, prairies, and scenic rivers—offering something for every visitor. Whether it’s paddling on a quiet morning, hiking under budding spring canopies, or relaxing around a campfire, Ohio State Parks Week is the perfect time to reconnect with the outdoors.

state park. The park celebrates Ohio's pioneer past and Shawnee history.

“The Buckeye State is full of opportunities to

get outside and explore,” said Lt. Governor Jim Tressel. “Ohio State Parks Week is a perfect time to visit your favorite state park or travel to a different part of Ohio and enjoy one you haven’t been to yet.”

The Eco-Discovery Center at Salt Fork State Park will open to the public Tuesday, April 22.

One of the highlights of this year’s celebration is the grand opening of the Eco-Discovery Center at Salt Fork State Park on Tuesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. This new, hands-on educational space will provide visitors of all ages with opportunities to learn

more about Ohio’s natural resources and wildlife through interactive exhibits and programming.

“Ohioans are lucky to have such a diverse and accessible park system,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “With 76 locations and no entrance fees, our Ohio state parks offer a gateway to Ohio’s great outdoors. There’s no better way to celebrate spring than to get outside and experience what makes each of our parks unique.”

Ohio is one of just a few states in the nation that does not charge an entrance fee for its state parks. Whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth, there's never been a better time to explore Ohio’s natural wonders, right in your own backyard.
