THE ESPLANADE - COASTAL WALK: Take a walk along the Esplanade starting at the North Pier car park, along the coastline and stop off at Oban War and Peace Museum. The museum has excellent displays depicting Oban over the years . Continuing your walk you’ll come across the Oban War Memorial & the Lighthouse, at the end of the Esplanade. The coastal site has picnic benches and a grassy area and offers a stunning view of Dunollie Castle, the Isle of Kerrera and the ferries and boats coming in and out of the bay. Dunollie Castle is an excellent photo opportunity. Check advert (6) on page 1 for admission details. This walk is approximately 20 mins of very easy flat walking, but if you would like to go further you will arrive at Ganavan Bay, a beautiful beach where you can paddle in the ocean, or even swim. A great walk for all the family.

Tourist Attractions THE OBAN DISTILLERY: Founded in 1794, the Oban Distillery is one of the smallest and oldest distilleries in Scotland, comprised of two small lantern-shaped copper stills. MCCAIG’S TOWER John Stuart McCaig, born in 1824, was an esteemed banker owning property in Oban and area. Noticing a number of skilled masons unemployed in the winter months, he decided to construct a memorial to his family. Construction took place in the winter months only, from 1895 until the time of his death 1902. The resulting tower allows magnificent views over Oban to the islands of Mull, Lismore and Kerrera. GANAVAN SANDS This picturesque sandy beach offers easy access, plenty of parking and great views out to Mull, Lismore and Morven. The beach lies adjacent to a lovely coastal walk. The road from Oban to Ganavan Sands is widely used by the local community for walks, running and cycling. Make a day of visiting the beach after stopping by Dunollie Castle which sits up high on the right side. Oban, PA34 5TB. (Map Grid: B1) 59

PORT APPIN lies on the coast of Appin, just north of Loch Creran. A fabulous day out, rent bikes and cycle around the area, or take the ferry across to the Isle of Lismore and spend the day walking.

There are two Restaurants and Hotels in Port Appin as well as a Grocery Store and a fabulous Craft Shop where you can purchase all of your gifts.

ARDUAINE GARDEN: Stroll among the spectacular Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Magnolias. Wander the leafy trails of the woodland garden to the viewpoint overlooking the ‘Sound of Jura’ and explore the lower garden where blue Tibetan poppies, giant Himalayan lilies and Chatham Island forget-me-nots thrive.

VISIT GLENCOE in the Scottish Highlands. The area is known for waterfalls and trails that climb peaks such as Buachaille Etive Mor and Bidean nam Bian. In the village, Glencoe Folk Museum occupies 18th-century thatched cottages, with displays on local heritage and the Glencoe massacre of 1692. Wildlife in the area includes red deer and golden eagles. Glencoe is perhaps Scotland’s most famous and most scenic glen. It is also Scotland’s most historic glen.

TRALEE BAY This is a stunning and very quiet beach, it has shingle at one end and beautiful sand dunes at the other. It is a short walk by a signposted footpath from Benderloch, where there is a car park, cafe and shop. There is another car park at the west end of the beach off the South Shian road. A brilliant day out to enjoy the sea and enjoy a picnic. A short 15 minute drive from Oban heading North.

ST CONAN’S KIRK (North of Oban) The architecture and design of this church are unique and it is visited by people from all over the world.

The Robert the Bruce chapel has a fragment of bone believed to be from Robert the Bruce’s tomb in Dunfermline Abbey. Spectacular views from the back of the church over the water. 25 mins from Oban on A85 in village of Loch Awe on the banks of Loch Awe. 64

SUTHERLANDS GROVE (North of Oban) A beautiful forest for walks, cycle routes and picnic sites. Four walks from ½ mile to 2 miles, are waymarked along with 2 cycle routes of 5 miles (easy) and 7.5 miles (medium) Through splendid Douglas Fir Trees, along a gorge with waterfalls into mixed broad- leaved woodland of Oak, Birch, Beech and Rowan. Lots of bird life. 8.5 miles north of Connel Bridge on A828, Fabulous day out for the whole family.

DUNSTAFFNAGE CASTLE: A fine 13th Century castle built on a rock with nearby ruins of a chapel of exceptional architectural refinement. Flora MacDonald was imprisoned here in 1746. Most of the grounds and gardens are suitable for visitors using wheelchairs or with limited mobility.

Relax in the large grassed areas and take in the wonderful views. 3 miles from Oban.

KILCHURN CASTLE (North of Oban) Home of the Campbell’s of Glenorchy. The initial building was erected circa 1460. The last alterations were made as a result of 1689 Jacobite rising to accommodate three companies of troops. Possibly the oldest surviving Barracks block in Mainland Britain. It was abandoned in the 1760’s. There is a small unofficial car park beside the road between the turning to Dunoon and the bridge towards Loch Awe village.

CARNASSERIE CASTLE stands just over a mile north of the village of Kilmartin. The castle was actually built as a single structure in the years between 1565 and 1572 for Bishop John Carswell as his main residence in Argyll.

There is a large car park next to the main road. From here you pass through a narrow stile and walk up the track. It is about a third of a mile. Now in ruins an interesting and refreshing walk with spectacular views over Kilmartin.
