Contemporary Crochet

Guest Artist

Crochet, macramé and weaving are all passions of contemporary craft designer Núria Mestres but it is large-scale crochet that really has her hooked. Núria taught herself to crochet when her children were young and was drawn to thick chunky yarns and super-size hooks which gave a quick result. Crochet baskets, bags and rugs, and macramé hangings are all easy to create using these wonderful yarns and the finished products make cool contemporary homewares.

At the show, Núria will demonstrate techniques and have a display of cool things to make for your home.

When Núria became interested in this form of crochet, she discovered that there was a lack of suitable yarn and rope products available in Australia. This led to sourcing ethically produced supplies from her home country Spain, and now Núria has a growing online business, selling linen twine, ropes for macramé and chunky yarns for crochet to customers around Australia and as far afield as New York.

Learn to make chunky crochet baskets in a Studio class on Friday morning with Núria. See page 12 August 17- 20, 2017 3

COLLAGE COLLAGE COLLAGE COLLAGE TO TO TO TO STITCH STITCH STITCH STITC

From Paper Play to Textile Art Presented by Four X Four, an exhibition of textile art will be on display with the collages which were used as the original design concepts. This new exhibition, Collage to Stitch, is the work of four South Australian textile artists and is the culmination of one years’ exploration of collage as a tool for developing ideas, originating from a workshop with textile artist Carolyn Sullivan. The themes chosen and the approaches taken reflect personal passions and generally revolve around nature. Flowers, trees and gardens were frequent topics for reflection by artists Maxine Fry, Ruth Galpin, Suzanne Gummow and Sandra Obst. See the collages and the developing textile designs along with the final textile artworks. Meet Sandra at the show.
