Come along and be inspired by a display of her work and join Saffron for a workshop to learn the versatile art of screen printing or fabric painting SCREEN PRINTING & FABRIC DESIGN WORKSHOP

About Saffron

Time: 10.30am to 12.30pm daily

Saffron Craig graduated with a First Class Honours Degree from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

For the past 15 years Saffron has worked out of her studio, painting, fabric designing and running workshops. Her paintings are inspired by her natural surroundings.

Skill Level: Suits beginner to advanced, everyone welcome.

Fee: $89 includes a screen and squeegee made in Australia to Saffron’s measurements, as well as half a metre of natural fabric specially prepared for printing.

Extra fabric available.

Please bring: a craft knife with a small cutting mat and an old tea towel.

Join Saffron as she shares her years of fabric design experience.

Saffron will show you how to design and draw your own motifs and then screen-print your design onto fabric, creating your own unique textiles.

Saffron has years of experience teaching this class and has loads of tips and tricks to share. She will also show you how to mix any colour to create exciting and unique colour palettes.

HAND-PAINTING FABRIC WORKSHOP

She grew up in a small coastal town in NSW and now lives by the shoreline on Sydney’s northern beaches. Saffron works by layering colour, creating texture, but with subtle shapes peeking through. Her most recent works are inspired by the landscape of the Margaret River in remote Western Australia, a place where the famous desert wild flowers grow.

In 2012 she was selected as one of 10 artists to design a bespoke illustration for Lego’s 50 year anniversary in Australia. In 2016 Saffron took on the role of being the host for events for the Creative Women’s Circle. Saffron regularly teaches workshops both from her studio and at events all around Australia.

In this workshop you will learn everything you need to know about hand painting fabrics, drawing from Saffron’s extensive experience. Join this workshop and create your very own unique fabrics.

Chiku Chiku Display Amazing Japanese Textiles on Show A major display of Japanese textiles will be exhibited at the fair this year. Curated by world-renowned artisan Akiko Ike, the exhibition will include futon covers, patchwork jackets and coats, table runners, furoshiki wrapping cloths, aprons, curtains and a couple of huge pieces including a 7 metre-long carp banner and a crane curtain.

Akiko Ike is an experienced and skilled seamstress but prefers the boro style of stitching where she uses stitches to bring new life to old cloth.

The onomatopoeic term Chiku Chiku refers to the sound of the needle passing through the thread and has been described as meditative and therapeutic, invoking a sense of calm and is said to even encourage dreaming. Akiko urges visitors to touch the works, feel their bumps and texture, trace their stitches and examine the layers which have been stitched together.

Akiko uses simple running stitch with cotton thread; she doesn’t care about the evenness of the stitch or straightness of line – instead she sews where her heart leads her. This simple sashiko running stitch was traditionally used to mend, patch and strengthen functional textile pieces and to add layers to increase the warmth of a garment.

ABOUT AKIKO IKE Akiko Ike is the owner of the Niigata Gingka Gallery and Shop, in Niigata, Japan.

At the age of 60, she began creating her stitched pieces, using thin worn out indigodyed nappies and old work clothes. Giving these and other old textiles such as worn mosquito nets, advertising banners and wrapping cloths new life by stitching with strong new thread she has developed a distinctive personal style.

She holds several exhibitions each year and through these, and her chiku chiku needlework groups, people across Japan are connected by needle and thread. * Please note, Akiko Ike will not be in attendance at the Adelaide fair.

Studio Art Quilters’ Celebrating Silver exhibition is a tribute to the group’s 25th anniversary. 35 quilts from their members in the USA, Canada and Italy show a diverse range of techniques while celebrating the common theme.

Constants & Variables A Challenge by the Viewpoints 9 group Enjoy this exhibition of international art quilts from a group of nine quilters from five countries.

The Constants & Variables Challenge explores themes the quilters have set each other. In this display we show the two themes of Reinterpreting Tradition and Text.

Quilters in Viewpoints 9 include Betty Busby (USA), Alicia Merrett (UK), Sue Dennis (Australia), Martha Wolfe (USA), Hsin-Chen Lin (Taiwan), Kim Misik (South Korea), Kate Themel (USA), Lisa-Marie Sanders (USA) and Diane Wright (USA).

Constants and Variables, challenged the members to respond to a physical variable in their work within a personal theme of their choosing.

Right: From the Traditions collection, Betty Busby created Crystallography Her statement: Using free form paper piecing combined with appliqué and non woven materials, Crystallography gets inside the poky macro world of crystal formation.

Paws & Whiskers Challenge Enjoy the results of a new mini textile art challenge, where quilters were invited to enter a small piece (25cm square) which shows off and celebrates their best furry friend.

Entrants have used appliqué, embroidery, felting, photographic transfer and numerous other techniques – study them for some great ideas. On display will be 48 delightful pet portraits and their accompanying stories.

Inner Journeys – SAlt This exhibition is the work of six South Australian textile artists, the SAlt group.

The work displayed reflects the artists’ unique and highly personal responses to the five themes – the physical journey, the emotional, spiritual, creative and the journey of discovery.

SAlt (South Australian living textiles) is a group of 6 independent textiles practitioners. Collaboratively the SAlt group sets challenges to inspire, explore, extend, respond to, critique and reflect on each theme. The six members are: Judy Bushby, Suzanne Gummow, Julie Haddrick, Francie Mewett, Sara Bell Smith and newcomer Wendy Thiele.

Celebrate 40!

See the challenge celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Canberra Quilters Inc. As part of Canberra Quilters’ ruby anniversary celebration, a challenge entitled ‘Celebrate 40’ was opened to all quilters in Australia and New Zealand.

An interesting variety of quilts were entered, and the finalists will be on display at the Adelaide fair. The first prize was awarded to Beth Miller for her quilt, ‘4 decades and 40 stars’ (pictured).

Presented by Four X Four, a new exhibition of textile art will be on display at the Craft & Quilt Fair.

This new exhibition, Collage to Stitch, is the work of four South Australian textile artists and is the culmination of one year’s exploration of collage as a tool for developing ideas.

The themes chosen and the approaches taken reflect personal passions and generally revolve around nature. Flowers, trees and gardens were frequent topics for reflection by artists Maxine Fry, Ruth Galpin, Suzanne Gummow and Sandra Obst.

Stitching with Beatrix Potter See a display by well-known Australian quilter Michele Hill, as she explores the world of Beatrix Potter through stitching, embroidery, small sewn items and quilts.

“My journey with Beatrix Potter began as a child and I still have my tattered but much loved Peter Rabbit book from the 1950’s. So after six years I have finally self published my second book all about Beatrix Potter.

I hope through the art of stitching I can bring some of Beatrix Potter’s delightful stories to life and that the projects bring pleasure to others.”

Take papercrafting to the next level with these FREE daily sessions.

Each presentation will run for around 20 to 30 minutes, with a section at the end for questions and a chance for you to have a play with the products used. Program runs daily, no bookings required. Head to the Bite Size Papercraft Techniques area.

Dreaming

New to the fair this year is a unique display of beautiful dream catchers.

Dream catchers have been around for generations and are currently enjoying a revival. A challenge was put to craft fair exhibitors to create a dream catcher using anything at all, including materials they offer at the fair.

Native American legend says that good dreams pass through the hole in the centre of the web while bad dreams are caught in the web. The good dreams will flow down the feathers to the person while the bad dreams dissolve in the daylight. Catch the display and see the different interpretations and be inspired to make one of your own!

Beautifully Decorated Zipper Pouch Brother Sew Easy classes daily!

Test drive the ScanNCut Machine and Innov-ís 1100 – a sewing and quilting machine – and create a beautifully decorated and very handy zipper pouch. You will learn how quick and easy appliqué designs can be cut using the ScanNCut machine then use the Innov-ís 1100 to decorate the zipper pouch and insert a zipper using the machine.

Come along and complete a creative scrapbook page under the expert guidance of Roxanne Fisher at AZZA European Scrapbooking, Stand A01.

Bring your photos and scrap them ‘European style’!

Class project: Visitors will create a 25cm x 25cm page layout and learn how to design and decorate the page using the range of AZZA products including the new Discovery Stencil, scissors, decoration stencils, inks, brushes, papers, tapes, and pens.

Class times: 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30am, 2pm and 3pm daily.

What to bring: Please bring two photos that are BOTH landscape layout or BOTH portrait layout (not a combination).

A selection of photos will also be available if you do not have.

Expertise Events, organisers of the Craft & Quilt Fair, has introduced a new initiative in 2016 – the Craft for Kids Foundation. The Foundation is for the collection and distribution of craft supplies, to give to charities for children in their care to use in craft activities.

Craft allows children to explore their creativity and is pure expression through their eyes with no rules or boundaries. The materials they work with are tactile, colourful and varied and provide children of all capacities to explore; with the satisfaction of making something as a gift or to keep.

Craft for Kids Foundation will donate craft supplies to charities that care for Australian children who are physically, emotionally, financially or geographically disadvantaged.

Expertise Events are also committing their craft experts to design and produce projects that they will teach the children to make at special events.

You are invited to bring in your unwanted craft supplies and place them in the special Craft for Kids Foundation area at the fair. Your donation will be stored in Expertise Events’ warehouse then delivered to charities once or twice yearly, as agreed.

Craft items you can donate include yarn, fabric, paper, lace, braid, craft tools, glue, embellishments.

Items that won’t be accepted include: money, unfinished projects, knitting needles, crochet hooks or pattern books.
