We are so pleased to be recognized for our efforts and are gratified to be recognized for our attempts to make a positive impact on our community. In particular we would like to thank the Chamber of Commerce, its Board of Directors and its members for their continued support of our initiative. We would also like to thank the sponsors of the many Business Awards of the Year categories, especially The Peace Arch News. Please see the page opposite for all the winners. Our sincere congratulations go to all the nominees for their outstanding contributions. With spring upon us it is time to start venturing out into this wonderful place we call home. pring on the West Coast, when nature’s palette is gloriously ablaze with fresh colour, is truly something to be experienced. Fresh air and blue skies call us outside, wakening us from our winter slumber and bringing the promise of warmer days. This spring as you take in the blossoming landscapes be sure to include Darts Hills Garden Park and the recently expanded woodland gardens at The Glades, two of South Surrey’s not-to-be missed destinations. Whether you’re a novice gardener or an experienced horticulturist, the range of flowering plants, shrubs and trees is sure to impress. and shrubs, including an outstanding collection of rhododendrons and magnolias. Home to some of the finest and most mature horticultural varieties in the region, this beautiful garden reflects the vision, commitment and hard work of avid gardener Francisca Darts. In 1943 Francisca and her husband Edwin purchased and cleared the land, transforming their property into an award-winning orchard. Over time Francisca became involved with local gardening clubs and the Royal Horticultural Society, developing an enthusiasm for rare and unusual plants from all over the world. Many of the tree and shrub species found in the garden today were originally planted with seeds from afar, as well as from the Pacific Northwest. Unlike formal or traditional

botanical gardens, Darts Hill is a true “plantsman’s garden”, showcasing a curated collection of only the finest examples of plants, species and hybrids, the reflection of an enthusiastic and knowledgeable gardener. Today the current size is 7.5 acres, and the City of Surrey has purchased an additional adjoining 15 acres. Darts Hill is a horticultural centre that holds a special place in the community, inspiring a new generation of gardeners and fostering learning and appreciation. The Garden is now operated jointly by the City of Surrey and the Darts Hill Garden Conservancy Trust Society. Enjoy Darts Hill Garden Park during the peak months of April, May, June and September during their Saturday Strolls. The garden may also be visited

Splashes Auto Glass & Modula Racks

spawned a career

A passion for cars

T

here’s a saying that goes something like this: Follow your passion and success will surely follow. Sometimes this ingredient can make the biggest difference of all – it certainly did for Ryan Oliver. The founder of Splashes Auto Glass, Detail and Car Wash, and Modula Racks, has been obsessed with cars ever since he can remember. Ryan began his career nearly two decades ago. His first job was washing cars at age 15, followed by detailing and auto-glass replacement. “I just really love cars … you can call me a self-proclaimed lifer,” he quips. “I think everybody sees whether you’re enthusiastic or not.”

company,” he explains. Indeed, Splashes now offers state-of-theart products and services that go above and beyond your traditional auto services. Whether it’s restoration work, window-tinting or protective coating, Splashes offers a one-stop shop. (Except repairs.) “Whether you left your sunroof open in the rain, you dropped bleach on the back seat, or a cooler filled with crab spilled all over your trunk, we can restore your interior,” he says. Recently, Splashes patented its WhiteWater Car Wash, a touchless car-wash system. This brush-free yet super-efficient conveyor car wash can super-clean 10 cars in 15 minutes.

Splashes Auto Glass, Detail and Car Wash After a few years working at Auto Werks, Ryan discovered that the owner was ready to sell. “I took it over in 2003 and changed the name to Splashes,” states the entrepreneur. A few years later he was approached by Greg Horton, who owned and operated an auto-glass business, inquiring whether Ryan wanted to merge their businesses. “In 2008 we partnered, which allowed us to really grow our

Modula Racks This January they launched a new, independent company called Modula Racks, born to cater to Splashes clients’ desire for roof racks. “We kept getting customers asking us if we sold roof racks, so we started carrying some funky, cool, well-priced, well-built Italian roof racks in Splashes. Within two years, it grew into its own entity,” explains Ryan. Today, Modula’s showroom caters to the outdoor enthusiast’s every need, including

M uch more than

ou might have heard that seniors’ programs are about bingo and having a cup of tea. That certainly isn’t the case at the Seniors Come Share Society. Here, seniors enjoy activities like bocce ball, Java Music, pizza-making and spa services, and that’s only the Day Programs. This nonprofit organization started as a grassroots movement in 1977. It was a labor of love for six caring individuals who saw friends and neighbours struggling to meet their basic needs. Often living alone, they felt isolated. “We started with a one-year grant from the Government of Canada and it grew from there,” says Executive Director Sue McIntosh. “Our society was designed to keep older adults in their homes longer by offering supports and services within the community to stay connected.”

Empower – Engage – Educate Today the Society offers 25 different programs, which include everything from its popular Community Lunches at the Kent Street Activity Centre to Friendly Visitor and Income Tax assistance. The flagship of the Seniors Come Share Society is the Day Program, offering a range of recreational programs, opportunities to socialize with peers, health monitoring, and exercises and games that strengthen and promote safety. These programs provide an opportunity for isolated seniors to meet new friends, stay physically active and keep mentally stimulated. The Society also recognizes that caregivers need assistance too. It features a wide selection of educational and support sessions such as workshops and Caregiver Café.

The Seniors Come Share Society is proactive when it comes to adverse issues facing seniors. When staff learned that some 80+ seniors were waiting for hours outside the Surrey Food Bank to get much-needed food items, often in rain and snow, the Society acted immediately. “We partnered with the city of Surrey and the Surrey Food Bank to ensure our seniors don’t have to wait outside,” says Sue. “Rather than having to stand in line to maintain their spot, they can now go to the Recreation Centre for some nourishment and socializing while they wait.” In 2015 the Society connected with over 75,000 seniors and their families, an impressive 48% increase from the year before. Sue went on to say: “Our team does a great job … over the last 40 years, we have made a huge difference in people’s lives by engaging them in the community. This makes a healthier and more inclusive community for all. We are always looking for partners who also want to improve the lives of the older adults in our community. Let’s talk.”

The calm

before the storm

“Y

OU’RE not a Capitalist.” The words rang out across the kitchen table, breaking the silence and nervous ticking of an old clock. “You’re a walking contradiction. How can you support globalism, the fundamentals of entrepreneurialism, and still be in favour of government intervention on real-estate pricing?” To this day these words from my mentor still echo in my head. Over two years ago on a late summer evening, a conversation about the affordability of housing and real estate between me and my mentor had become the subject of a heated debate. Now, looking back, he was right to claim that at the time I was being narrow-minded and not seeing the bigger picture. Fast forward to today and sure, government intervention has helped stem some of the craziest real estate runs that BC has ever seen - but it’s temporary; the floodgates will burst. 2016 was the year of intervention and the realization of sobering results in Vancouver and surrounding municipalities. A ‘wild west’ of sorts for the last few years, construction has boomed, empires were created and business practices ran unchecked in a loosely unregulated environment. This summer the sector woke up to a bad hangover. The provincial government stepped in, imposing the 15% foreign buyers’ tax, a re-haul of real estate practices and a vacancy tax starting in 2017 within the city of Vancouver. Not to mention that the CRA has spread a blanket across the Lower Mainland and is targeting any business practices remotely tied to real estate. I am a firm believer that while government initiatives and regulatory control will slow growth for a brief moment, it shall be fleeting, as regulation cannot stop demand. Take for example

22

EXPERIENCE SOUTH SURREY & WHITE ROCK   |

that the 15% foreign buyers’ tax is on residential real estate only; it does not apply to commercial nor to the non-residential component of mixeduse properties. Talking to individuals on the front lines in condo-presales, supply is limited as condos are flying off the shelves like hotcakes. Despite recent restrictions in China on outflowing capital, foreign monies will still come into Vancouver and the surrounding cities as a safe haven to invest and foster growth. With the ascendancy of president-elect Donald Trump, the coming months will show us a possible influx of U.S. immigration and businesses, and indirectly immigration from global sources may increase as the White House adopts a tougher stance south of the border. A greater influx of both refugees and new immigrants under the Trudeau administration is also fueling demand in Surrey. BC Stats has our net inflow population projection at a conservative 52,000 new individuals for 2017. Contrary to public opinion, even though CRA is specifically targeting construction and real estate, this will not slow down the need for supply. Take into consideration that earlier this week Business in Vancouver wrote that 15,000 construction jobs will be needed to be filled in 2017 due to the sector’s growth. With BC currently looking more attractive than Alberta, we are also seeing an internal migration of workers and skilled labour from the oilfields coming back home. Of course, as always there are two sides to the coin, but as was candidly pointed out to me two years ago, we live in one of the most desirable places in the world. The 2010 Olympics put us on the map; it’s just a matter of time before our population exponentially multiplies. We can implement all the regulations and red tape we want, but we have to face reality: this is just the calm before the storm.

Add a dose of cozy comfort and a camp-style vibe, and you’re right at home. “We’re fortunate to be considered a favourite Lower Mainland upscale-casual restaurant,” explains co-owner Tom Gass, who runs the restaurant with his wife Tracy. Many of the eclectic items have been donated by customers or collected from yard sales. The effect is a fun and friendly ambiance. Hope and healing

at Life Force Chiropractic + Wellness Dr. Robin Randhawa

W

hile at Simon Fraser University, Dr. Robin Randhawa job-shadowed several health professionals. Yet it was chiropractic care that resonated with her. “I can’t really explain it, but it just really appealed to me,” she says. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology at SFU in 2004, she furthered her studies at the Western States Chiropractic College in Portland. After working for a few years in the San Francisco Bay area, Dr. Robin returned to her hometown and in June 2015,

32

EXPERIENCE SOUTH SURREY & WHITE ROCK   |

founded Life Force Chiropractic + Wellness. She wanted to create a wellness centre with a strong commitment to personalized care, a holistic healing environment, and the latest techniques and treatments in the chiropractic field. The objective of chiropractic treatment is not only to relieve pain, but also to improve quality of life by relieving systemic problems relating to the central nervous system. Dr. Randhawa understands that many people fear the “pop”, but they need not. “We use correction methods that are safer,

SPRING 2017 WWW.EXPERIENCESSWR.CA

more comfortable and more effective than ever before. We combine those with stateof-the-art technology that allows us to treat patients with a non-invasive approach,” she explains. “It’s a mixed blend of different techniques that we customize for each patient.” During the initial consultation, a chiropractic examination will be able to identify whether or not there is interference to the function of your nervous system that may be affecting your health. Combining chiropractic techniques and lifestyle suggestions, Dr. Randhawa begins a patient’s recovery to wellness. Journey back to optimum health Taking her patients on a journey back to optimum health is what drives her. “It’s not just about a bone out of alignment … there is an underlying cause which is often associated with lifestyle and stress,” explains

Robin. “If we don’t address both, we can’t heal. Along with dealing with the issues affecting a patient’s health, there are simple changes I can suggest that can make a huge difference.” Another specialty for Dr. Randhawa is expectant mothers. She is trained to use the Webster Technique, a very gentle method, to analyze and adjust the hips throughout pregnancy, detecting imbalances in preparation for safer, easier births. At Life Force Chiropractic + Wellness, Dr. Randhawa and her team make the health of your nervous system a priority. “As a holistic centre, our philosophy is that the body works as a whole ... if something in your body is off, chances are other parts are as well,” she stresses. Begin your journey back to optimum health by contacting Life Force Chiropractic + Wellness.

M

ay 15th 2016 is a date that is forever etched in Laura Cornale’s memory. That is the day a massive fire ripped through Laura’s Coffee Corner and along the once thriving Five Corners neighbourhood. The fire caused extensive damage to the proprietor’s popular coffee shop, as well as to many of her fellow

business owners’ shops and the residents’ homes in Ocean Ridge. “The fire completely destroyed my business and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to reopen or not,” says Laura. “I was stunned by the devastation. Initially, I was told it could be two to three years before I could reopen … I thought my customers would forget me by then.” The only things salvaged from the gutted coffee shop were the sandwich preparation table, the dishwasher, and her slightly damaged espresso machine. “I am thankful for at least salvaging something.” Fortunately for her loyal following, Laura was slated to reopen in February,

only now in a new location across the street, the former site of J&H Food Market. The previous owners, the Soo family, approached her with their plans to retire last fall. “A customer of mine called me, telling me he knew the Soo family. He mentioned to me that they wondered if I would be interested in taking over their store,” she adds. “I love this area and I’m really thankful for the Soo family doing that for me.” Restoration The newly minted Laura’s Coffee Corner showcases a reclaimed wood coffee bar, whitewashed brick walls, and lots of steel and exposed pipes. Additionally, the owner of the former Taka’s Sushi donated 12

wooden tables, similar to those in her former locale. “I will have extra seating (30 inside and 12 on the outside patio), in a more contemporary, industrial-chicmeets-country-style decor,” she says. “My husband, Glen, has been doing all of the renovations, including building a really nice communal table and bench.” Laura is especially excited about her ‘piece de resistance’: an 1889 piano previously owned by a 97-yearold woman. “I’m going to roll out the piano in the summer on the patio to encourage people to come out to play,” says the entrepreneur. Fresh Treats With three times the footprint of her former java shop, Laura’s Coffee Corner will offer customers more of her European-inspired fare, including baked goods and breakfast, lunch, and now dinner selections.

“We are extending our hours and offering lots of new options,” says Laura, adding that she’s hired another pastry chef. “Now that I have the extra space, I can bake my croissants, Danishes and launch some home-baked breads.” Earlier this year, Laura used her time to test-bake fresh culinary delights. “I’m going to introduce new dishes such as Chicken Pot Pie, Baked Mac n’ Cheese, Steak and Vegetable Pie, Gruyere Potato Broccoli and Leek Galettes and Pineapple Twists,” she adds. There will be a few new breakfast choices as well, like mouthwatering waffles, a granola and fruit bowl, and sweet potato hash with poached egg. The java bar is a true family affair. “My mom, Ruggera, comes in in twice weekly to bake some of her delicious goodies, and my daughter Sophia is back as one of my baristas,” Laura says.

Community Rebirth While it wasn’t easy, it certainly has been worth it for Laura. She has been humbled by the tremendous support of the community during her shutdown. “The fire has taught me about what a great sense of community exists here,” she reflects. For more information about the Grand Re-Opening of Laura’s Coffee Corner, visit their Facebook page or their new website at www.laurascoffeecorner. com. Now Laura is looking forward to the future, one that highlights a Five Corners neighbourhood that re-emerges stronger and better.
