EXPERIENCE INDEPENDENCE
As the Chief Executive Officer of the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to Independence County, where southern hospitality flows as naturally as the White River that shaped our beautiful landscape and vibrant community.
OUR COMMUNITY IS UNIQUE THANKS TO THE AWARD-WINNING CITIES, BUSINESSES, RESIDENTS, NONPROFITS, EDUCATORS, CHURCHES, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS WHO WORK TOGETHER AS OUR COMMUNITY GROWS.
For more than a century, the Chamber has championed growth and prosperity in Independence County. We continue to advocate for business and community excellence and serve as the leading partner in IMPACT Independence County—a grassroots community development strategic plan built on the belief that every resident has the right to shape our future.
As Arkansas’ oldest city, Batesville is proud of its history—but we’re even more excited about what’s ahead. The city is investing $145 million in water infrastructure and quality-of-life improvements, including the full renovation of Riverside Park, which will reopen later this year as a destination for residents and visitors alike.
We’re also continuing to innovate how you experience our community. The Experience Builder app is your personalized guide to discovering the best of the Batesville Area—whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure, local dining, family fun, or cultural attractions.
National recognition confirms what locals already know: Batesville is one of the “Best Small Towns in the South,” as named by USA Today and recognized multiple times as an Arkansas Business Trendsetter City. In the pages ahead, you’ll find our favorite spots and experiences — we encourage you to explore them all and truly experience Independence County.

WHY I MOVED HERE
When considering a move, finding a place that offers both charm and opportunity is essential.
The Batesville area offers just that and more. Nestled in the scenic foothills of the Ozarks, our town seamlessly blends small-town charm with modern amenities. Our vibrant downtown area, friendly community, and picturesque landscapes make Batesville an inviting place to call home. With a rich history and a welcoming atmosphere, we pride ourselves on being a town where newcomers are greeted with open arms and quickly become part of our close-knit community.
Check out their stories.
THE KIEFFER FAMILY
We moved to Batesville for a job — and quickly discovered it was the perfect fit for our family, too. With three young boys, we love how Batesville blends smalltown charm with plenty to do together. We’ve found a supportive community that works hard to continually make this town even better, with a thriving downtown, endless outdoor adventures, and people who truly care. Moving here was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made — we’ve found close friends, a welcoming church home, and a place our family loves to call home.
We moved back to Batesville for the simple joy of raising our children close to their grandparents — in a community with deep, multi-generational roots, surrounded by family, history, and the kind of support that only a small town can offer. The beauty of Batesville — from its charming downtown to the peaceful river views — has always held a special place in our hearts. We're beyond grateful to call this place home…again!
THE CLONINGERS
A family visit during the pandemic opened our eyes to something remarkable in Batesville — a community rooted in faith, family, and education. When we had the flexibility to work remotely, we chose to make this place home. Now, our kids get to grow up with trails to explore, events to enjoy together, and a town that shines — especially at Christmastime.
THE RENTERIA FAMILY
We moved to Batesville because we were ready for something quieter and more meaningful. Life in the city had begun to feel like a blur — rushed and too crowded to enjoy. We stayed because we fell in love with the small-town way of life: the charm, the simplicity, and the comfort of familiar faces. This is a community that comes together, creating a warmth that’s hard to find elsewhere. And the scenery… nothing compares to the beauty that surrounds us here.

BEST SPOTS TO FLOAT, FISH, + HUNT
What is it about the water that attracts people? Maybe it’s the wild sounds — the roar, splash, and splatter of the water rushing over and between the rocks. Or, perhaps it’s the lure of breaking the glassy surface of a fog-covered river.
Either way, the miles of streams and rivers in Independence County offer anglers plenty of chances to land a trophy or catch a limit of various freshwater species. If you’re more of a leisure floater — we have something for you, too.
Running through the heart of Batesville is POKE BAYOU (also known as Polk Bayou, but that’s a debate for another time). It was home to the first settlement in the area and remains a hot spot for nature lovers today. The bayou winds through Batesville and spills into the White River. Anglers, kayakers, and canoers enjoy the bayou and its recreational opportunities. Public access points are available at Poke Bayou Park and near Bayou Street.
The mighty WHITE RIVER offers a wide range of boating adventures. Launch your boat above the dam at Kennedy Park or below the dam on Riverbank Road. Take a walk on the sandbar and skip rocks on the shores of the beautiful White River.
ROWE LAKE , located to the west of the Batesville Community Center, is a 2-acre lake stocked and managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). The lake is home to annual youth fishing derbies and a cross-lake pedestrian walkway.
THERE’S A WHOLE WORLD TO EXPLORE OUT THERE. START RIGHT IN OUR BACKYARD, IN THE MOST GEOGRAPHICALLY DIVERSE LANDSCAPE IN ARKANSAS.
You can find another AGFC-managed waterway just south of the White River. RAMSEY SLOUGH features a boat ramp and a handicap-accessible fishing pier.
Lyon College’s BRYAN LAKE is a quiet fishing hole perfect for long walks with your dog. But, it’s also home to one of Lyon’s deepest traditions — the freshman raft race, where newcomers build cardboard boats and vie for bragging rights.
The JAMESTOWN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA is managed by AGFC and is located on the county’s western side. Hunters have the opportunity to pursue a variety of species, including whitetail deer, quail, bear, squirrel, and turkey.
On the eastern border of the county, you’ll find JACKSONPORT STATE PARK at the confluence of the White and Black Rivers. There are several boat ramps, marinas, fishing piers, and swimming beaches.
CHRIS enjoys playing with his kids and trying something new off every menu in town.

NCO’s programs include Early Intervention Day Treatment (EIDT), Adult Developmental Day Treatment (ADDT), supported employment services, and the Community and Employment Support (CES) Waiver Program.

The Waiver program coordinates care and services, allowing beneficiaries to access support for activities such as shopping, hunting and fishing, watching their niece and nephew play ball, going out to eat, going to the lake and other family outings. Angie also goes to get her hair and nails and done, thanks to Waiver services.
Doug and Angie also attend NCO’s ADDT program called New Directions, which provides the opportunity to participate in life skills, communication, and socialization, recreation, and prevocational training. New Directions and its sister site, The Martin Center in Ash Flat, participate in Special Olympics and other events throughout the year, and they host special guests to speak on topics such as the art of charcuterie, social media and Internet safety, the solar eclipse, planting seeds/growing flowers, taking care of animals, and more.

BUILDING A BETTER BATESVILLE
Pardon our progress, y'all.
Batesville is on the rise — and we’re grateful to our residents for making it possible. In an overwhelming show of community pride and shared vision, voters approved a $145 million investment in major park renovations and essential water infrastructure improvements. This historic commitment lays the foundation for a more vibrant, connected, and resilient city.
Set along the banks of the majestic White River, the reimagined Riverside Park will celebrate Batesville’s natural beauty and heritage. Plans include an expansive trail system for walking, jogging, and biking; new sports courts; inclusive and nature-based play areas; water play zones; and a brand-new bike and skate park. The new Events Center will serve as a community hub, hosting gatherings, celebrations, and large-scale events.
Long-term plans call for extending the Greenway Trail from Riverside Park to Downtown, continuing the city’s dedication to outdoor recreation and connectivity. These expansions will be supported through matching grants secured in partnership with state and federal programs.
And we’re not stopping there. Batesville is replacing its 1960s-era water treatment plant with a modern, efficient system capable of

meeting the needs of our growing population and industries — ensuring clean, reliable water for generations.
So please pardon our progress as we build something truly special. The work happening today will shape Batesville’s future and create spaces where our community can gather, play, explore, and thrive for decades to come.

Ask around long enough, and someone will tell you about The White River Water Monster. For over a century, fishermen, farmers, and travelers have whispered about a mysterious creature that stirs the surface of the White River, leaving behind only ripples and wonder.
Some legends suggest that the cryptid played a pivotal role in the Civil War, overturning a Confederate boat in 1864 near what's now Jacksonport State Park.
The first recorded sighting of the White River Monster came in 1915, when Bramlett Bateman, a farm owner near Newport, swore he saw something "as wide as a car and three cars long" moving through the water.
The legend grew in 1937, when dozens reported a train-sized, gray-skinned creature with a long, spiny back and a horn on its head. It moved slowly, but powerfully, leaving a wake big enough to rock a boat. Word spread, reporters and tourists arrived, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission discussed building a giant net to catch it.
The Monster resurfaced in 1971, leaving big three-toe tracks along the riverbank. A photograph from that summer seemed to show a long, spiny ridge across its back.
By 1973, Arkansas lawmakers created the White River Monster Refuge, protecting the creature in a stretch of the river between Old Grand Glaize (Jackson County) and Rosie (Independence County).
So the question remains, what is the White River Monster? Some say a giant fish. Others think it could have been an elephant seal or manatee that wandered far from home.
Whatever it is, keep your camera ready — you never know when the White River Monster might decide to make another appearance.
