Overcoming Obstacles By DiAnna Drysdale

A Letter From The Editor Our Journey It’s just past 6:30am, and the glorious colors of the early morning illuminate a soft blanket of billowing fog swirling and flowing through the October air, while the smooth continuous movement of the Pacific Ocean plays a peaceful and undisturbed melody. On October 10, 2015, I was honored to be amongst the 150 athletes that set out on a cycling expedition down the California coast to raise funds and awareness for the Challenged Athletes Foundation or better known as CAF. The foundation provides opportunities and support to people with physical challenges in their pursuit of active lifestyles and competitive athletics. CAF has changed lives of thousands of people

by providing prosthetics, specialty they are difficult to comprehend. bikes, wheelchairs, surfboards and the My Shining Star list grows with the athlete. It is now the 3rd day of our “Million Dollar Challenge,” a 620 mile journey we have embarked on together. Before I get into the grind for another day on the road, I clip out of my pedals and contemplate the majestic mountain range of Big Sur before my eyes. Entranced by the vista before me, I sat reminiscing on the many trials and tribulations that led me to this place, the inspiring lives that motivated me to push myself physically and mentally for a cause so near and dear to my heart and to my family. I am overwhelmed with gratitude to have shared experiences with so many courageous and resilient people that triumph over challenges so profound

Among my greatest motivators and the inspiration to finish this ride is my husband Cliff’s daughter Kirsten (Kirsty) Drysdale. Kirsty is one of the most amazing and inspiring women I have ever met in my life. In her early 20’s she suffered from a debilitating stroke in her lower spine; however, she found the will to persevere and succeed in life through her love of animals. Now in her mid 40s and unable to walk, Kirsty embraces her condition and finds her mobility and independence through her deep connection and trust in her horses. The first time I met Kirsty, I was entranced as I watched her instruct a beautiful and powerful steed to lie

sports could be a financial burden, so luckily, the park district fit my family’s budget. This was the beginning of my love affair with competitive sports. From gymnastics to track, my love for sports grew to be extraordinary. As my performance strengthened, so did the volume of my critics. In my youth I was awkward in stature and did not look like much, but I was a great performer. I was bullied and ridiculed. This taught me to keep my head down, persevere and work hard CAF Riders at the Million Dollar Challenge starting line to win. Tennis Is For Everyone It was not until 5 years ago when I married my husband Cliff that I discovered a love my newest sport of choice, tennis. We have all heard that tennis is “the game of a lifetime.” Here I found another lifelong connection to sport. Both in our tennis clubs and on the world’s competitive stage. I have also witnessed a special type of camaraderie through this game, especially when it comes to those players with a disability. From wheelchair tennis and the Special Olympics to year-round

was shifting from thinking “what more can I do for me” to “what more can I do for others?” Like so many that have gone through striking experiences, your purpose and confidence comes into question, why is that? My father would say we are looking for some sort of Utopia and that always lingered in my mind. What CAF and the challenged athletes have taught me is that you do have Utopia and it is just the matter of realizing what you have, and not focusing on the have not’s.

The 2015 “Million Dollar Challenge” had 7 challenged athletes among the 150 riders, and together we raised over $1.6 million dollars to help children, adults, military personnel, veterans and first responders with physical challenges in need of prosthetics, training and therapy.

Alex is incredibly humble. He says his biggest hurdle is overworking his one good arm, and because everything he does in life is with his one arm, the overuse can take a toll. He describes some memorable instances of mechanical breakdowns in the middle of a tennis match, but the biggest obstacle is playing in the wind and trying to get the ball toss just right for the serve. As a tennis player you’re thinking hey, I know what you mean! In Alex’s case, however, not only does he have to rely on tossing the ball in the right spot but also hoping his prosthetic arm, with a closed fist, doesn’t fail him!

All that aside, Alex’s co-workers at Stratton Mountain will tell you he has the meanest serve amongst them and he is a force to be reckoned with on the court.

Attitude Is Everything In sports and in life, each of us faces one challenge or many every day. I hope some of these stories of athletes who overcome obstacles, exhibit sportsmanship and defy the odds to achieve success inspire you when faced with the next proverbial mountain you must climb! This was much more than an epic bike adventure, this truly had become a celebration of how all walks of life can unite as one. Cliff Notes

Mental Challenges 12

Visit ExperienceCDT.com to book your tennis travel and events.

Cliff Notes Tennis’ mental challenges are every bit as critical as the physical. The game’s creators, by design or not, turned this game into a battle of moments of tension and panic. Break point, set point, serving for the set or match, it never ends. If you can defeat these mental demons you will have won half the battle.

THE SWING IS THE THING No matter how deeply you wish for the next crucial point to go your way, desire alone will not get it done. It’s the swing of the racket in your hand and the impact of the ball on your strings that will. Make yourself make the swing with purpose. Instead of hoping for your opponent to lose, go for the win. No swing, no win...

PRESSURE IS A PRIVILEGE This is the title of Billie Jean King’s book and a great tennis lesson. We practice for hours, we take lessons, we train like Olympians and for what? To face the pressure moments. Embrace them. Enjoy them. That’s why we play this difficult game. It’s difficult by design and that is why we enjoy it so much: to take on the challenges and defeat them.

IT’S THE JOURNEY Andre Agassi talked a lot about the tennis journey. If he lost a match it was a small step in a larger journey that was all about improving as a player and as a person. This kind of thinking takes the pressure off each point being a moment of tension and drama.

NOBODY DIED NO EXCUSES There are hundreds of reasons to be negative. Not enough sleep, sun in your eyes, windy day, bad practice, opponents’ bad call, partners’ double fault on game point, cluttered mind, partners’ attitude, etc. You can easily find a good excuse, but if you finish the match with the attitude that you gave it everything you have, you will be in winner’s circle more often than not.

I will never forget Boris Becker’s comment after he had won Wimbledon a few times and was widely expected to do so again. He lost in a huge surprise and made his way to the crowded press room where there was a silent hush. The press wondered expectantly how he would react. He said something like OK nobody died, we are not at war. It was just a tennis match....brilliant and true.

Yoga is not a passing fad. There’s a reason it’s been around would eventually be able to lead some better quality of life. over 5000 years, It works. The best way I know how to explain is to share through my own personal story:

I didn’t care about money or superficial things anymore. I just wanted to be healthy. Because of my yoga practice I was able to start walking

In June of 1995, I was on my way to work one morning when the car I was a passenger in was involved in a near fatal accident. We were traveling at a high rate of speed in order to avoid the $100 late fine from our brokerage firm. I had quite a nice balance going already. We got cut off by another car that sent us into the left railing ricocheting and spinning us forward through I-95 morning traffic, eventually hitting my head on my side. The motor of the car came up through the floor detaching my left foot and ankle and hitting me so hard it fractured my femur at the hip. How it helped them through life’s challenges and various types of physical and emotional blockages and traumas. I was surprised to notice how many people suffered from anxiety and how their yoga practice gave them confidence and changed their lives. I understood that yoga was much more than just the physical postures, it was about using the postures (asanas) in conjunction with the subtler practices (pranayama, meditation, mantra, guided relaxation, yoga philosophy, Ayurveda) that really created a profound transformation.

The T-shirt became such a hit with the 34 women that Cleary and Bishop knew they were onto something: Tennis already had plenty of practical clothes but none that reflected the joy of playing. Their hobby has turned into a business with name recognition. LoveAll has produced more than 100 designs sold by more than 300 retailers across North America, Europe and Australia . Wearable and Fitness Trackers Come of Age in 2016 By Rick Limpert

Look around. You will undoubtedly see, or maybe not see, more fitness trackers and wearable sensors in 2016 than ever before. They could be in the form of a small thin band on one’s wrist, a patch on an arm or even a sensor placed under your bed sheets. Yes, the once ubiquitous “wearable” is going to be a little harder to notice and see. What began in 2010 as a $6.3 million industry is now estimated at a $7 billion market and is predicted to be valued at over $12 billion by 2018. Wearable technology can be everything from steps to calories burned and even sleep, but the key to wearable technology is retrieving the data and turning it into useful information that can help one get healthier and more fit. The other thought is wearing a tracker or sensor also helps motivate the user to get up on their feet and be active.

The Consumer Electronics Association says that around 11 million wearable devices were shipped in 2015, up from more than 3 million the previous year. Technology research firm, Gartner, predicts that 70 million to 100

million devices will be purchased in 2016. Here are five “wearable” and “activity tracker” devices that can help you get healthier and more active in 2016.

“There absolutely is a consumer appetite for this, and that’s been the case for millenniums,” explains Luis Rincon, co-founder and CEO of Wearables.com. “What’s new, is we are now entering a phase where technology can provide that stimulant.” Visit ExperienceCDT.com to book your tennis travel and events.

Beddit For some, sleep isn’t that peaceful or easy. The CDC says that an estimated 5070 million American adults have a sleep or wakefulness disorder. For athletes this is even worse news as a good night’s sleep is critical as they seek peak performance. With Misfit’s Beddit Smart sleep tracker, you don’t have wear anything, you don’t have to sleep a certain way and you don’t have to hook anything up to a wall or device. Beddit turns your own bed into a smart bed by placing the tiny Beddit sensor under your bed sheet. It’s as easy as syncing the Beddit with your Apple Watch or any other iOS or Android device to get the data. And data you will get, as the items tracked include: heart rate, body movement, sleep cycles and SleepScore. The SleepScore is delivered to you each morning, letting you know how well you slept. Is the Beddit a guarantee to give you a perfect night of sleep? No, but it will provide useful data and information to improve your rest and sleep. Sweet dreams with the Misfit Beddit, a smart sleep monitor that provides insight on how you sleep. See it all at Beddit.com.

Inclusive Tennis

A Cliff Drysdale Tennis-designed program for children with learning and physical disabilities

Cliff Drysdale-managed facilities strive to offer “something for everyone.” In addition to a full curriculum of adult and junior programs, CDT clubs have branched out to provide customized classes for people who may have once believed that they could never play tennis, but thanks to the energy and creativity of Drysdale pro staff , they have been provided a chance to enjoy the game. A multitude of Special Olympics teams have formed in Drysdale locations across Florida and Texas in addition to wheelchair tennis programs in recent years. The CDT Team has taken this concept one step farther in order to create a custom program for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Inclusive Tennis was developed in 2015 by Cliff Drysdale Tennis Program Director Luke Barker to bring the enjoyment of tennis to juniors with learning and physical disabilities in New Braunfels, TX. Originally from the UK, Luke based the program on his previously developed, very 24

New to the CDT Family: Cincinnati Tennis Club years for firms such as 3M and the State of TX.

Cliff Drysdale Tennis and Cincinnati Tennis Club are pleased to announce their new tennis partnership, which has a Drysdale-led team managing the tennis programming and facility for their 2016 season beginning in April. Nestled in the heart of East Walnut Hills, Cincinnati Tennis Club was founded in 1880, just five years after tennis was introduced in America. The club is the second oldest tennis club west of the Allegheny Mountains, and is among the ten oldest clubs in the United States. The members-only club features 10 outdoor clay courts, and a spacious club house with a large covered porch. The historic location has played host to many prominent past tournaments and is currently the 26

home of the USTA National Father Son Clay Court Championships. The club’s season runs from midApril through Mid-October. At the helm of the new program as Director of Tennis will be Cliff Drysdale’s son, Greg Drysdale. Growing up amidst the courts of the Lakeway World of Tennis where his parents Cliff and Jean were resident touring pros, Greg got his start in professional coaching at the Landfall Club in Wilmington, NC which also later featured a tennis and sports complex designed by Cliff Drysdale. Greg went on to coach at the multi-award-winning Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, TX before relocating back to Austin, TX where he worked in operations and materials management in recent

“Cincinnati Tennis Club exudes old world charm and a rich tradition of tennis that we are honored to be a part of,” states Scott McCulloch, Vice President of Club Operations for Cliff Drysdale Tennis. “Greg Drysdale brings a wealth of knowledge to the club, both on and off the court. As a part of one of the world’s most legendary tennis families, Greg will also add to the legacy of the tennis tradition at the Cincinnati Tennis Club.” “We are thrilled by our partnership with Cliff Drysdale and his management team,” stated of Scott Estes of the Cincinnati Tennis Club Board. We are continually impressed by the level of professionalism they bring to our every interaction. With Cliff and his team in charge of our facility, we believe we will continue to thrive and grow for many years to come” For membership inquiries and program information for the 2016 season, please contact ctc@ cliffdrysdale.com By

People come to CopperWynd on vacation, to get married, for business meetings and it excels at all of them. But for some of us, what matters most are the tennis courts. What we are especially proud of at CopperWynd are the tennis instructional programs - for adults and juniors alike - because any sport needs a steady stream of new players. For players who already are at the top of their game, you are handled too because there are other players at CopperWynd already in that category. Walk out on the court and you will feel like a champion. It’s that kind of place. And it’s a place to work on your personal inner game of tennis. The quiet and tranquillity of the Sonoran Desert inspires introspective insights. That is the path to championship play and, at CopperWynd, the belief is that we all can become champions.
