FEATURES Aun cuando se tomaron elementos de distintas culturas y países, la película debía ser lo más fiel posible a su inspiración. Así, se reinterpretó con respeto la leyenda hindú de los naga, criaturas mitológicas parecidas a las serpientes que vivían en los cuerpos acuáticos y representaban la fertilidad. “En el guion, el agua era importante porque tenía un nivel profundo, un nivel espiritual: la vida que infunde fuerza. Es un elemento de resurgimiento. En la mitología y las tradiciones, el agua y el dragón de Naga están conectados con la naturaleza y la gente”, explicó Don Hall, también director. El resultado de este trabajo fue un filme de acción en el que la nueva princesa de Disney se convirtió, orgánicamente (en palabras de los creadores), en un personaje femenino fuerte que representaba para bien la cultura asiática. “Crecí viendo películas de acción de Hong Kong en las que las mujeres, además de ser hermosas y bellísimas, blandían sus espadas y peleaban contra sus enemigos”, sumó la escritora malaya Adele Lim, “Raya es una mujer fuerte y la dragona es una chica. Es difícil ver que estas amistades entre mujeres sean el centro de una superproducción de Hollywood”.

Architects, musicians, choreographers, museum curators, and anthropologists were all called on to help create the world. While it incorporates elements from different cultures and countries, the movie had to be as true as possible to its inspiration. So, the Naga of Hindu lore –mythological, serpent-like creatures that live in bodies of water and represent fertility– were carefully reinterpreted. “Water is important in the screenplay because it has a deeper level, a spiritual level: life bringing force. It’s an element of resurgence. In mythology and tradition, water and the Naga dragon are connected to nature and people,” explained co-director Don Hall. The result of all this work was an action film in which the new Disney princess organically (in the makers’ words) grew into a strong female character that accurately reflects Asian culture. “I grew up watching Hong Kong action movies in which, in addition to being beautiful and gorgeous, women wield swords and fight their enemies,” added Malaysian writer Adele Lim, “Raya is a strong woman and the dragon is also a girl. It’s rare for these friendships between women to be the focus of a big Hollywood production.”
