IN THE WORLD OF LUXURY TRAVEL: 5 TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2018 PLANNING A VACATION FOR 2018 AND LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION? COMING OUT OF 2017 AND HEADING INTO NEXT YEAR, MOST TRAVELLERS ARE FOCUSED ON TAKING A SLOWER PACE AND REALLY DELVING INTO AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES IN REMOTE PLACES. HERE ARE THE TRENDS WHICH EXOTIC VOYAGES HAS IDENTIFIED DURING THE LATTER HALF OF 2017 AND WHICH WE FORECAST WILL CONTINUE TO GROW NEXT YEAR.

8

1. RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL Right now there is a real focus on going green in every aspect of life, including travel. Tourists are beginning to realize that truly meaningful travel means accepting a responsibility of stewardship for the beautiful places that they are visiting. Indeed, Sustainable Travel International and Mandala Research have reported that 60% of leisure travellers from the US have been on a “sustainable vacation sometime in the past three years. That means staying in eco-friendly hotels which use sustainable materials, eating fresh, locally-sourced produce, and drinking from refillable water bottles. Travellers also are touring in small groups so as to minimize their footprint. Ecological conscientiousness is only one aspect of responsible travel. Tourists also are becoming more culturally aware, taking time to learn the history of the areas they visit to preserve and respect cultural traditions.

2. REMOTE LUXURY While it is wonderful to live in an interconnected world thanks to the web and mobile devices, more travellers than ever are looking to “switch off” and make a true escape. So another growing trend is for remote travel. Indeed, luxury resorts are cropping up in destinations which are hard to reach and which have limited or no cell phone reception. Some examples are tree houses in Thailand and Indonesia and wellness treats throughout Southeast Asia. These accommodations allow travellers to soak in unparalleled tranquillity, restoring body, mind and spirit. Indeed, around 17 million travellers have said that they are focused on “health and well-being.” 40% of these travel on a regular basis.

3. LONG AND WELL-PLANNED TRIPS Traditionally, most people have planned trips that last a week or less—two weeks at the most. But it is hard to really let go of day-to-day life and fully immerse oneself in a new experience with such a short duration. That is why trips longer than two weeks, sometimes a month or longer, are becoming more common. Indeed, some travel companies report that bookings for these types of trips have more than doubled between 2017 and 2018.
