Know the Differences Between ETFE & PTFE Wires Summary If you know the differences between ETFE wires and PTFE wires, you will be able to make an informed choice. Read on to find out the differences so that you know which wire you should select when the need arises. ETFE stands for ethylene tetrafluoroethylene. So, ETFE wires are made from fluorinebased plastic. Such wires have a high melting point and are renowned for their resistance to heat, electricity, and chemicals. On the other hand, PTFE stands for polytetrafluoroethylene. It is hydrophobic and solid fluorocarbon. It is primarily used in pumps as it minimizes friction, thanks to its low coefficient for friction against solids. Now that you know the basics PTFE and ETFE insulated wires, it is time to look at the differences between the two Teflon wires. ETFE Wires vs PTFE Wires ETFE and PTFE wires are most commonly used to re-enforce pumps. Both have their own set of advantages when used for this purpose. When it comes to tensile strength, ETFE wires have greater strength compared to PTFE wires. Hence, these wires are mainly suited for harsh operating conditions. This is the main reason when you require pumps for injecting molding process, it is advisable to opt for an ETFE-based pump. It will perform better in such harsh operating conditions. Since PTFE wires have a better coefficient of friction compared to ETFE, these wires are highly sought-after in conditions where there are high flow and a need to reduce losses due to friction within the pipes. You will also find that both wires have different thermal properties. This is also one of the main differentiating factors between the two. While ETFE wires can withstand temperatures of up to 267 degrees Celsius, PTFE wires have the ability to reach temperatures as high as 327 degrees Celsius without experiencing any degradation. It is prudent to remember that both wires will get soft as their approach their maximum temperature limit. Hence, you should select your wire carefully based on the application. Use the wire that can withstand the temperature that you require for the application. In case the application will be held in a high oxygen environment, it is prudent to opt for PTFE wires, as they have a limiting oxygen index that is more than 95 percent. ETFE has a limiting oxygen index of somewhere between 30 to 36 percent. The Final Words Now you know the different between ETFE and PTFE wires. Make sure you find the right supplier for the Teflon wires you are seeking. It will make a huge difference to the
