ore than 40 years ago, we took a group of adventurers to Kathmandu in the back of our Bedford truck on a mission to see the world for ourselves. It was the first Exodus trip, a chance to venture into the unknown with fellow explorers, to meet people along the way who could share perspectives different to our own, and to see the diverse destinations that they called home.

Four decades on, our expert guides still look forward to welcoming you and your fellow explorers to discover the

HOME This year, many of us took to exploring our own back yard – and why not, we’re proud to live in a nation that’s steeped in layers of tradition and fascinating history. One of the best ways to fully appreciate the unique cultures, charms and distinct local flavours each part of the United Kingdom has to offer is on foot, which is why we’re excited to introduce a selection of our new walking holidays, so you can continue the adventure on your doorstep.

ENGLAND Best for coastal walks Enjoy charming stays on the medieval harbour of Padstow and Charlestown’s Georgian harbour where you will set out to discover the ancient Celtic kingdom of Cornwall. Allowing ample opportunities to explore the north and south coast, this route begins by walking towards spectacular beaches of Polzeath and Daymer Bay, with the opportunity to dine on Rick Stein’s famous fresh-caught fish and chips. Next, head towards the cliffs at Stepper Point, for panoramic ocean views where Peregrine Falcons are known to nest. After visiting the Fowey Estuary and Restormel Castle, join the South West Coastal Path and wander around the charming Lost Gardens of Heligan. Enjoy lunch in the harbourside village of Mevagissey at the quaint Kings Arms pub, which serves up excellent seafood and Cornish local fare.

SCOTLAND Best for wild, beautiful scenery Few places stir the soul and the imagination quite like the Scottish Highlands. Enjoy exhilarating walks along the remote and wild North Highland Way, where you can admire some of the country’s finest cliff-top views, white sand beaches and misty mountain trails. A day trip to the Orkney Islands offers opportunities to see puffin colonies (in season) and a chance to delve into its fascinating Viking heritage and ancient Neolithic UNESCO sites. WALES Best for outstanding natural beauty Known for its beautiful beaches, heather-clad moors, and rugged southwest coastline, wander through the Whiteford Burrows Nature Reserve and the Llanrhidian Marsh SSSI, where it’s not uncommon to spot Oystercatchers and Turnstones nestled in rare flora of early marsh orchid and dune gentian. Continuing to Rhossili village, the route takes you out to the famous “Worm’s Head”, the furthest westerly point on the Gower Peninsula, and the fascinating ruins of the Salt House. Afterwards, walk through the Oxwich Burrows National Nature Reserve towards the spectacular Three Cliffs Bay, where you’ll find lizards often basking in the sun. This Welsh trip ends with a brisk hike to Mumbles lighthouse.

JORDAN Best for desert landscapes and ancient cities Accompanied by a local Bedouin, we get the opportunity to delve into their nomadic lifestyle with a traditional Zarb dinner and camping under the stars in Wadi Rum – it’s an experience not to be missed. SICILY Best for local delicacies and archaeological gems I’ve had a love affair with Sicily for years. With an incredible number of archaeological sites and ancient temples from multiple periods, including the largest Greek settlements outside of mainland Greece, this place is any budding Indiana Jones’ dream. NORTHERN CYPRUS Best for ancient gems Home to vast archaeological sites and sun-dappled castle ruins, Northern Cyprus’ mix of cultural influences and historical events has made this side of the island truly fascinating. On the Walking in Northern Cyprus trip that my wife and I put together, you’ll also have the opportunity to wander around the ghost town of Famagusta, view the intricate stalagmites and selenite crystals in the Incirli Caves and see the impressive 50-row theatre in the Ancient City of Salamis.

NEPAL Best for iconic trekking I can never tire of hiking in the Himalayan region. KILIMANJARO Best for unforgettable panoramas Many people dream of standing on the roof of Africa. It’s the longest, uninterrupted view on the planet where you can see the curvature of the globe as the sun rises. Taking the western approach, we follow the Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route, cross the caldera of Shira Volcano and the southern icefields of Kibo before we reach the summit for unforgettable panoramas of the wild Shira Plateau. I vowed that I had done my last trip up there, but these views are calling me back.

HISTORY IN THE AMALFI COAST

Our centre-based trips allow travellers to relax and make themselves at home with our friendly local hosts. Nicola Acampora, from the Hotel Due Torri, shares with us how he gives his guests a real taste of Italy.

Y

ou may have tasted creamy gelato in Rome and tried ‘Bigoli in salsa’ in Venice, but nothing compares to the zesty limoncello aperitifs and the classic slices of Neapolitan pizza you will find in the Amalfi Coast. At Hotel Due Torri, the Acampora family understand the importance of using the best local and home-grown ingredients for their traditional Neapolitan pizzas they’ve been serving to Exodus guests for over 15 years. Nicola Acampora, owner of the hotel alongside his brother Giovanni, explains, “The hotel was our family home. Our mother was born here, as were we. The hotel opened in 1983 and at 14 years old, I was already making my first pizza for our guests!”

Located in Agerola, green gateway to the Amalfi Coast, the Hotel Due Torri quickly became a gastronomic rite of passage for our travellers over the years. They’ve even opened their kitchens for budding chefs who are looking to recreate

Campania’s most mouthwatering plates for themselves.

With a boat trip to the beautiful isle of Capri and an unforgettable trek along the Path of Gods, it’s the hands-on Italian cooking class with the Acampora family that continues to be one of the major highlights for our travellers when they return.

“Pizza is the staple dish of our region,” says Nicola, “and during my class, I give our guests some background on its history, and how it evolved from f latbreads in Naples. I explain how the dough is made, the ingredients we use, and then everyone has the opportunity to make their own: from kneading the dough through to choosing their toppings!” Quality local produce is the key to great tasting food in the region, as the fertile lands are blessed by a mild climate that enhances the richness of the f lavours. Nicola comments, “The secret to the best pizza is in the ingredients. From plump tomatoes to buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil, you find the best

quality ingredients for pizza here in our region. It’s why ours are the best!”

Other fresh ingredients that go into making their Neapolitan pizza are even more local than that, “Our 83-year-old father Antonio cultivates a piece of land near the hotel so a lot of the fruit and vegetables we use come straight from there.” Each family member has instrumental roles to play alongside the Acampora brothers. “Absolutely everyone helps us to keep it so successful.

This is our family home and we could not be more proud of what we have all achieved together.”

OUTSTANDING TREKKING Best for local culture Discover trails less trodden on a spectacular hike through Kyrgyzstan’s wild Tian Shan Range. On this exhilarating trek past beautiful alpine meadows and wild pastures inhabited by Kyrgyz nomads, you’ll cross into the immense Jety-Oguz Gorge, walk to the summit of Karakol Peak and visit ancient sites such as the Cholpon-Ata Petroglyphs. INNER PEACE Best for night sky viewing Starting in Askole, this epic trek in the Baltistan region follows the Braldu Gorge towards the tip of the Baltoro Glacier before the exhilarating ascent to the campsite in Concordia. Continuing up the final ascent on the rocky moraine towards Concordia, you’ll see a circle of mountain giants come into view. This outstanding panorama nicknamed “the throne room of the Gods”, encompasses the snow-capped peaks of Gasherbrum 4, Mitre Peak, Chogolisa and Broad Peak, a remarkable sight by day and by night which will stay with you forever.

We’re working hard behind the scenes, actively seeking new ways to support while heeding the latest advice from our government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to ensure our tour leaders, colleagues and people are safe. This has meant repurposing our funding for emergency relief to support vulnerable communities that need our help.

TANZANIA The Kilimanjaro Porter Project Since 2015, we’ve been helping to educate female guides and porters on Kilimanjaro, but due to COVID-19, we redirected our funding towards people in immediate need. Working with our partners, we’ve disseminated health advice and money management training to 9,000 porters while also delivering subsistence farming training.

In addition to this, we’ve adapted our “Leave no Trace” and “Mountain Clean up” training to give porters new skills for the return of tourism. We’re also excited to announce that our 10 Mountain Lioness Scholarship awardees have just completed their training and are ready for when the world reopens.

Our Community Kickstart Project invites Exodus tour leaders, guides and team members on the ground to apply for grants of £200-£1,000 to invest in community-based projects or charitable initiatives which will create a positive economic, social or environmental impact in their local communities.
