Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

Party Like A Scotsman! The 10th Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper will take place January 23 at the Ugly Mug, and there are many reasons this might be your fave event of the year… 1. If you like doing fun things on cold winter nights, instead of sitting at home counting the weeks until Memorial Day. 2. If you are a common kind of man or woman. You see, the night is held in honor of Robert Burns, an 18th-century Scottish poet who was the first to write in — and celebrate — not the voice of an uppity elite, but of the common, blue-collar guy. Maybe you haven’t heard of Burns, but it’s likely you’ve heard some of his work. We bet “Auld Lang Syne” rings a bell... 3. If you like delicious food. This is obviously not true in the case of EZ Facebook friend Glenn Barrie, who wonders if the Geneva Convention once declared haggis a weapon of mass destruction, but never mind that. Haggis is simply a tasty mix of meat, oatmeal and spices, and no, it is no longer prepared in the casing of sheep’s stomach. For the less adventurous set, there is a vegetarian haggis available, as well as fish and chips. But c’mon… be adventurous. “I actually ate haggis for the first time at the 2013 Burns Supper and I found it quite tasty,” says Burns vet Anthony Bruno. Also… the Scottish egg appetizer? That’s worth the trip in itself. 4. If you like great music. The Irish Pipe Brigade — who admit that even they consider themselves Scottish on Burns night — will be on hand once again to entertain with a mix of Irish, American, and (mostly) Scottish tunes. And to balance their beers on their drums while they play. “The instruments become $700 beer holders,” says Pipe Master Kevin Tolan. “This is really a neat FRIDAY 12/20: Cloudy High 54 Low 48 / Sunrise 7:14 Sunset 4:41

It’s the event of the winter, and it’s coming soon. The Tenth Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper will be held at the Ugly Mug on Thursday, January 23. Proceeds will go to Animal Outreach.

event that draws a fun group of people.” 5. If you like mediocre music. (We can’t be held responsible if EZ staffers occasionally grab the mic.) 6. If you’re the kind of man/woman who likes seeing men/women in kilts. Or, if you are the kind of man/woman who likes being a man/woman in a kilt. Of course, men/women are not required to wear kilts. Unless said men/women have exceptionally good-looking legs. 7. If you like cute cats and dogs. All the proceeds from this year’s dinner will benefit Animal Outreach of Cape May County, which provides assistance to pet owners in need, sponsors strays, and provides foster care for both felines and canines. “We are very appreciative of the support,” said AO President Ellen Shaw, who explained that this donation will go largely toward the paying of vet-

erinary bills. (Sidenote: Animal Outreach is always in need of new foster parents to provide housing and care — AO will cover your expenses. What a great way to start the new year… we’re just saying.) 8. If you like a bargain. Tickets are $35 each. Purchase them at ezstore.us/ burns-supper before it’s too late; this event usually sells out quickly. 9. If you like that warm and fuzzy feeling that comes from sharing good cheer with good company. Until then... stay warm, Cape May.

7-Eleven Mystery We’ve all been wondering what the deal is with 7-Eleven on Broadway. So we called the corporate office. Apparently, they are still wondering as well. “I learned that we closed the operating store on Thursday [December 12],” said

Margaret Chabris, Director of Corporate Communications, before adding, “I do not know its disposition.” We’re assuming its disposition is probably sad, since no one seems to know what to do with it. What we do know: All of the 7-Eleven signage is gone and there was a full dumpster in the parking lot the other day. Where To Bring Your Canned Goods East Lynne Theater Company is accepting nonperishable items for the Cape May Food Closet. What is needed are cans of fruit, paper towels, and toilet paper. Any canned food items will be accepted, as long as they are not expired. Bring an item to the December 13 performance of ELTC’s Christmas with Harte and O. Henry and save $3 off your admission price. Attend the December 14 matinee, and part of your admission money will benefit Cape Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Bring canned and non-perishable goods to Cape May Brewing Company for the Community Food Bank of New

Jersey, and you’ll get $2 off your growler fill. They’ll also discount your first tasting. Now through December 17, bring non-perishable food items to the Cape May Fire Department, or the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, to benefit the Cape May Food Closet. Music For The Yuletide Season With The Baltimore Consort On 12/19, Access to Art will present the famed Baltimore Concsort with “Wassail, Wassail! Music for the Yuletide Season,” old carols and dance tunes from the British Isles, France, Spain,

and Appalachia at 7pm at Willow Creek Winery (628 Stevens Street). The BC, founded in 1980 to perform the instrumental music of Shakespeare’s time, performs across the world. On this night, an evening of mulled wine, and selected wines from the vinyeard will be available to those who wish to purchase them to accompany the concert. Tickets for the concert are $25 for adults, and $20 for seniors. Send checks to Access to Art, Inc, 417 E Pacific Avenue, CMCH, NJ, 08210. Call 609-465-3963 to reserve. Tickets available at the door beginning at 6pm the night of. Kiwanis Trivia Night On 12/19, show ‘em what you got at the Kiwanis Club House, 1041 Beach Ave. Cape May. $5. donation at the door. Snacks will be available. 40th Candlelight House Tour On 12/28, this self-guided tour, the main attraction of Cape May’s holiday season, features homes, inns, hotels, and churches decorated for the holidays, plus caroling, and strolling musicians.

WEEKLY EVENTS THEATER Playing Now At Cape May Stage: Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol: We all know the story of Ebenezer Scrooge...but what ever happened to Jacob Marley? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned for all eternity, but when a malicious little evil sprite offers a desperate Marley one chance to free himself, he accepts. To escape his own chains, he must first redeem Scrooge. So begins a journey of laughter and terror, redemption and renewal. This irreverent, funny, and ultimately, deeply moving story retells Dickens’ classic with warmth and infectious zest. This thrilling performance is sure to become a holiday classic for generations to come. Through December 29. Performed at The Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Santaland Diaries: A struggling young writer takes a job as a Christmas elf at Macy’s in New York City, and offers a sardonic, witty, irreverent accounting of elf training, bad Santas, abusive customers, and humiliating conditions. Go deep into the heart of Christmas as it exists in our consumerized world and get our holiday in high gear with this hilarious one-man show. Through December 29. Performed at Congress Hall. my sister-in-law’s second husband – and a niece. That’s six. They’ve written to me for money, seeing my name in the paper ez hevin’ made a strike. But I’ve never met ‘em, and I want to give them a Christmas party, and I’d like you to run it for me,” explained Dick Spindler to the widow Huldy Price. “Run it for you! Man alive! What are you thinking of?” responded the widow. How this Christmas party comes together in the town of Rough and Ready, who ends up coming, and how they all behave, is all part of the fun in Dick Spindler’s Family Christmas by Bret Harte. Meanwhile, another miner, Cherokee, wants to share his new-found fortune with old friends and all the children in Yellowhammer. How the townsfolk try to make Cherokee’s Christmas plans come true is at the core of O. Henry’s humorous and insightful story, “Christmas by Injunction.” Both stories were adapted by ELTC’s artistic director Gayle Stahlhuth who began performing her own one-person

plays in 1981 at venues including The Smithsonian, with Lou: The Remarkable Miss Alcott. Through December 14. Call 609-884-5898. ROLLER SKATING (at Convention Hall beginning December 20) Adult Skate: Open to those 18 and older. Held on Tuesdays, starting January 7, from 7pm to 9pm. The Movie Column

O

Tom Sims previews the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes

SCAR time will soon be upon us, and of course you know what that means. Party at the Mad Batter! Join us Sunday, March 2 at 5:30pm for Cape May Film Society’s annual Oscar party for prizes and ballots, and great food and cash bar. And what will you be talking about? Oscars! Of course if you read this column regularly enough, you would have seen a prediction or two (with our predictions here that Best Actress nominations may go to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine or Judi Dench for Philomena). Golden Globe Award nominations came out last week. Precursor to the Oscars, the Golden Globes often provides a healthy sampling of nomination lists you’ll see on Oscar night. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who hosts the Golden Globes, agrees with this column about Blanchett and Dench. They also like Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Meryl Streep for August: Osage County, and Emma Thompson in Saving Mr Banks. Could this be the year that Alexander

Payne brings home the Oscar for Nebraka? The film has been nominated for a Golden Globe as well as Payne for director. He’s been nominated in the past, given writing awards for Sideways (2004) and The Descendants (2011), but was passed over as a director. The Golden Globes have nominated Joel and Ethan Coen (two personal favorites of mine) for their latest film, Inside Llewyn Davis for Best Motion Picture (Comedy), but passed on their directing of the film. Philomena (reviewed in the column by East Lynne Theater Company’s Artistic Director

Gayle Stahlhuth) received a nomination for Best Picture. A film receiving several nominations is 12 Years a Slave, which tells the true story of a free black from upstate New York sold into slavery in pre-Civil War United States. The movie received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture, Best Actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Best Director (Steve McQueen), along with many other awards. The film to capture the most Golden Globes? American Hustle hosts an all-star cast with Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper… and so on. It’s listed as a comedy or musical with Golden Globes, puzzling as it promotes itself as a crime drama. But that’s why the Golden Globes are a little confusing to me. Why don’t they just do like the Academy Awards and put 10 films up for best picture without labels? Send us your picks for favorite films to capemayfilm@hotmail.com. We would like to hear what you think should be nominated! Look for more on Oscar in part two of this column next week!

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

REMEMBER the Cape May Ice Age. We thought it was just a cold snap and the streets were alive with the sound of children playing, workmen hammering foot-long icicles from store fronts and the occasional rifle report as a glass milk bottle left outside on the front step by the delivery boy froze solid and exploded. How we laughed/screamed, depending on whether the fragments of glass whizzed past overhead or struck us in the face. Overnight temperatures dipped to single digits, and a curfew was imposed after a score of visiting Philadelphians dawdled too long en route to their hotel after one too many cocktails at Martini Beach and were found iced together crossing the street in the morning, like a deep-frozen version of that peculiar TV documentary The Human Centipede that one of my vile great-greatnephews left in the VCR machine last visit. Then things grew colder, water froze in the pipes and we all had to drink neat liquor. For me this was business as usual, but the general mood around town improved great-

ly. Less so once we replaced the content of dogs’ water bowls with bourbon, as canines tend to be unpredictable when drunk, much like Scotchmen. The Young Albert of the day downed three bowls of grog then ran amok, biting all and sundry. His rampage came to an end only when he paused to urinate on a lamp-post and the stream froze in mid-flow, affixing him to the pole as if superglued. Then the ocean froze solid, rising up 20 feet like a great green raft: trapped inside one could see surprised fish, a peeved-look-

ing shark and a monstrous kraken. Crowds gathered on the beach, muffled so not even a square inch of flesh was exposed, to gawp. Once in a while an excited bystander would forget themselves and, seeing a 1000-ton block of ice rise up with a treasure chest inside, point, accidentally revealing a sliver of wrist, and their entire hand would snap off and fall to the frozen beach. By that stage, we accepted that this was no ordinary winter, and something was afoot. Within the week, a herd of mammoths arrived in town, pursued by a tribe of furclad hunters carrying stone-tipped spears. Still, the temperature dropped further and one morning what happened but the very oxygen in the air froze, falling to the ground as snow. I kid you not. We were speechless, in every sense. After that, things grew fuzzy, and the next we knew we were all defrosting a decade later, with waist-long hair and fingernails Shirley Bassey would have died for. That, friends, was “icy”. This? This is just a mild frost.

The book everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed. These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m taking my boyfriend of six months home for Christmas to meet my folks, and the closer it gets, the more I’m starting to panic. He’s great, but now I’m thinking that he DOES kind of dress like a slob sometimes. And he’s not adept at small talk. His table manners are okay, but he’s not overly informed on world events, and my parents like politics, so I’m afraid he’ll be lost. My parents aren’t monsters, but I’m sure they’ll be watching him closely… how do I stop obsessing about this? — #1 Daughter Dear Daughter The Answer Lady can understand that you are nervous about introducing your new love to your parents, but please — make a note of the way you’re feeling right now in the event you don’t marry and spend the rest

of your life with this gentleman. The holidays are stressful enough. Let us endeavor not to add to it by introducing new love interests to family members who may or may not welcome them with open arms. Hopefully, Christmas at your house is a chaotic, festive affair, and there will be enough going on in the way of obnoxious drunken relatives, dysfunctional sniping amongst siblings, and passive-aggressive gift exchanges that your new beau may sail quietly under the radar.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

BRANDY likes to play and will fetch a ball, but he would much rather snuggle by your side. He would be best in a home without children or other animals. At first glance you would think the fact that Brandy has only three legs would make for a highmaintenance dog. In fact, he is a very cool guy who just wants to hang out with you. He is quite healthy but long walks are difficult. He needs a home where he will be accepted.

«

COCO is a fun-loving spunky shepard. She needs a little training because of all her energy. She loves snuggling and would love to be in an active house where people are ready to play. Coco has been bounced from home to home and is looking for a forever home where she can get comfortable. If she looks like a dog you could have tons of fun with please come to the shelter to meet her.

«

PENNY is as cute as a girl can be. She can be the perfect couch potato but she also likes to play games like fetch. She has been in the CLASS program and knows how to greet people politely, walk nicely without pulling and lots of other things. Affectionate with manners, a sense of humor, brains, and beauty, what more could you ask for in a lifelong best friend. If Penny sounds like a match for you, stop in at the shelter.

Activity Of The Week

This week: Take a hike! (In Cool Cape May.) By Catherine Dugan.

ALKING is great exercise, and walking in winter has some extra benefits — you don’t have to deal with bugs or pollen, and it’s easy to keep your cool. You can connect to the world, even if it’s only to track the critters who took a snowy path before you, or to admire the decorations on your neighbor’s house. The stars are easier to see in a clear winter sky. The outdoor air is free of the cold and flu germs clinging to your friends. This time of year, you gain a fresh perspective on your troubles, along with a renewed appreciation for the warmth of your own home. Cape May is a great walking town, whether you have a destination or not. Stroll and window-shop on the Washington Street Mall. Face the bracing wind along the promenade and enjoy uninterrupted ocean views beside a charming Victorian cityscape. Take a winter picnic to Cape May Point State Park, which offers great trails for every ability. The half-mile Red Trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible, the Yel-

Walk down Sunset Boulevard to Cape May Point State Park, and the lighthouse low Trail is a mile-and-a-half long, and the Blue Trail is two miles — add a trip out to Sunset Beach to really rack up the steps. There are viewing spots to pause and examine the marsh, dunes or shore and search for birds who are paying a winter visit. Rumor has it that snowy owls from the Arctic are in town. the invading phragmites so you can enjoy the natural landscape from the one mile loop. Whatever path you take, follow the advice your mother gave you and dress for the weather. Wear a hat and dress in thin layers, so you can peel something off and tie it around your waist when you warm up. Make sure your boots are water-resistant and have a tread, even if you plan to stick to sidewalks. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen in the daytime. If you’re walking in the evening, wear something reflective or carry a flashlight. If you’re planning a really long walk, preselect a warm-up spot along the way. It’s a good idea to bring a few dollars and a cellphone with an emergency contact, so that you don’t have to rely completely upon the kindness of strangers. (Go ahead and plug in an emergency contact under ICE — it will only take you a minute and I’ll feel better.) You’ll feel energized and healthy, and happy to bask in the warmth of your own snug Cape May room. Next week: Ring out the old

LOWER Cape May Regional freshman TONY GENARO brought a lot to the table this year when he started varsity for the soccer team, and is hoping to be a big asset to the 2013-2014 boys’ basketball team. Genaro is not only a big-time athlete, but he is also an all-around good student. Genaro is in all honors classes and takes school very seriously. He hopes to get into the Naval Academy or West Point after high school. After college, he hopes to go into the Army or Navy and eventually be a police officer just like his father. Tony follows in his parents’, Maura and Tony’s footsteps, with being a high school athlete. Being five feet tall, people often question his ability to play basketball. “I don’t listen to them. I believe that I can succeed at this level,” said Genaro. His biggest goal would be to score 1,000 points his senior year. Story by Carley Mendyk / Photograph by Jake Fitzmaurice
