A letter from the Ceo Dear Exclusive Books Customers, Welcome to our 2023 Christmas Catalogue. Each year, our store managers select the titles for our Christmas Catalogue from the vast array of books presented to us by our publishers. Selecting the final 130 titles requires an in-depth knowledge of our customers, and what you are looking to read or to gift over Christmas. As a chain of 45 bookstores with over 700 years of experience in our management team, we trust the list we have selected offers a range with something for everyone. Enjoy! I would like to extend a special word of thanks to you - our customers, our staff, authors, publishers and landlords, who have helped us enjoy another successful book-selling year. Whilst it has been very challenging, we must call out some of the successes we have been able to achieve. Our business has recovered post the Covid years and we have opened five new stores in the last 12 months. We have moved or renovated those stores that needed some TLC and we have increased our staff compliment in line with our store growth. We continue to invest in the brand, our people, the books we sell and our customer experience. We remain committed to our purpose - to enable customers to experience the joy of books and reading and by doing so hopefully reverse the negative reading culture and trend in our country. Exclusive Books is also in the business of entertainment - we like to call it retail-theatre. Our stores are designed and built to create a sense of space and belonging. Every store is unique and has a different design theme. Every store manager curates books for his/her specific store to meet the needs of each store’s customer base. We are an independent book business, serving our communities, with the widest selection of books available in the country. We are humbled and grateful for your support over the last 12 months and we wish you all a wonderful Christmas, filled with books and reading. Best, Grattan

Exclusive Books was eager to chat to Deon Meyer about life behind the pen: What does the title Leo suggest? This is a tough one to answer, and I will have to tread carefully to avoid spoilers. But here are a few clues: Early in the story, American tourists in the Okavango ask the field guide Christina ‘Chrissie’ Jaeger what one should do if you are charged by a lion. Much later, Chrissie realizes that Heracles (Hercules to the Romans) had this very conundrum when he had to kill the Nemean Lion – the beast the star constellation Leo was named after. So, readers might expect a confrontation with a lion of sorts somewhere towards the end of the book. And perhaps, it is also about confronting the beasts within?

It is no secret that international crime writers include your work in their storyline, for example Ian Rankin references a character reading one of your books. How collegial is the international community of crime writers? I discovered this special bond between crime authors back in September 2004 when I attended my first Bouchercon, the huge World Mystery Convention, which was held in Toronto that year. They are an incredibly generous and inclusive group of people. Why does the collegiality exist? Perhaps because we all really love the genre, both reading and writing in it. We worked so hard to establish ourselves in the market, and crime fiction readers are always looking for new authors to read, so there is never the feeling that you are competing. And writing is a lonely business, a world that is difficult to share with people who do real jobs…

Bennie’s battle with booze seems to mirror a lot of South African’s daily wrestles. How much of this is the crime thriller protagonist trope of cop battling the bottle and how much of it is a uniquely South African challenge? Bennie’s story certainly started out as a continuation of the trope, but once I got stuck into researching the influence of PTSD on our policemen and women, I realized it is a very real dilemma. Especially in South Africa, with our high rate of violent crime. Throughout Bennie’s journey, I’ve tried to respect the challenges our law enforcement officers face every day, and put an empathetic and realistic psychological profile on it.

The 12th of June is said to be D-day ; the day Bennie will be tying the knot. Bennie has tried to settle down in past books, but something always pulls him off track. Why is now the time for this union? Bennie popped the question because he loves Alexa deeply, but he does not think this is a good time for the union. He’s not quite ready yet. The big question is, will he turn up for the wedding?

How has story time with your children calibrated your writing? I used to make up bed-time stories for them every night when they were small, and soon realized they are a very tough audience. They will call you out on bad storylines and inconsistencies. It taught me a lot!

Your wife, Marianne, recently shared a sweet moment of you reading the newspaper to your parrot. If you’re not flying a bird, you’re spending quality time with one – what has been your fondest flying experience? I had to do a lot of research about aircraft and flights for Leo, and I’m eternally grateful to my generous genius neighbor Dr. Johan Steytler, who flew us all over the Western Cape in his Cessna 210 to make sure I got the details right. I’m an avid flight simulator hobbyist, and Steytie allowed me to take the stick all the way to Doringbaai, which certainly rates as my fondest experience.

The book that brought us Bennie Griessel, Devil’s Peak, is finally coming to DSTV. What can we expect? A fantastic South African cast, under the expert guidance of South African director Jozua Malherbe, following a great script by Matthew Orton, brought Bennie Griessel to life. (I think Hilton Pelser is just perfect as Bennie). It’s going to be a suspenseful, white-knuckle ride!

A QUESTION POISED TO

Abraham Verghese “Fiction is the greatest lie that tells the truth.”

Your book, The Covenant of Water, has been so lovingly received, not just as a work of fiction, but as a powerful work of spiritual teaching. Did you intend to straddle this literary/spiritual divide in such a significant way?

Spanning 1900 to 1977 in Kerala, India, this novel traces a family haunted by generations of drowning deaths. Set within a Christian community, the story revolves around Big Ammachi, who witnesses profound societal changes. The novel showcases medical progress, humour, and deeply moving characters, offering a vivid portrait of India’s evolution and the sacrifices of past generations for those present.

“At one level I was simply being true to the times, true to the memory of people like my grandparents and even my parents for whom the spiritual aspect of their existence was and is as palpable and concrete as a limb or an eye. In describing that era and those lives I too found myself with renewed awe for the likes of my grandmothers who each lost a child to a preventable or treatable condition now; their faith sustained them and enabled them to go on. I was not trying to proselytize nor have I been capable of any true intentionality in a book other than bringing characters to life and then being true to who they are. My ultimate goal is always a good story, well told. The “great lie“ can only resonate with a reader if it tells the truth. I am humbled by readers’ emotional reactions to the likes of Big Ammachi because I could certainly not count on it equaling my own. It is so very gratifying. May I add the book’s reception in South Africa is such a delight. I am a child of Africa and also a part of the far flung Indian diaspora and I feel very attuned with people of all cultures who live there. So to have the book succeed there the way it has is such a blessing.”

AUTHOR IN FOCUS

Angela Makholwa

Angela Makholwa first rose to literary fame when she released Red Ink in 2007, which comfortably put her on the map as one of South Africa’s most notable crime fiction authors. Since then, Makholwa has released The 30th Candle; Black Widow Society; Critical, But Stable and Blessed Girl which was shortlisted for the Comedy Women in Print Prize, and for which Marian Keyes slid into her DMs with praise along the lines of, “I don’t know how you do what you do”. In The Reed Dance Stalker, the sequel to Red Ink, Lucy Khambule is back, and busier than ever! But danger lurks and Lucy is at the helm of uncovering the truth. Exclusive Books caught up with Angela Makholwa to chat about her new book:

Your readers have waited 16 years for a sequel to Red Ink. What awaits us in The Reed Dance Stalker? Yes, it has been more than 16 years since I last wrote Red Ink and readers have been begging for a sequel as the book ended on such a major cliffhanger. I was excited to write crime fiction again and to set this genre in a quintessentially African cultural setting-the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance in Eswatini. I feel that part of embracing our culture is pulling it into mainstream narratives and adding elements of intrigue and excitement in order to heighten interest in the lived experiences that so markedly distinguish us from other cultures and regions. It’s what makes us unique.

AngelaMakholwa @AngelaMakholwa @makholwamoabelo

Your PR company ‘Britespark’ is another layer of your storytelling endeavours. How has PR and events management influenced your writing? Art once again imitates life as my own PR company was involved in the FIFA Preliminary Draw event and I just thought this glamorous and highly charged atmosphere would make an interesting setting for a crime scene. The book is very meta as Lucy is also now an established writer, though in her case, non-fiction is her preferred genre. And just to push the boundaries between fact and fiction further, she’s also writing a sequel to her original book on the Dingiswayo brothers.

At the Time of the Writer festival in Durban, you expressed that “Fiction is the most truthful form of writing”. Can you elaborate on what you meant by this?

The movie Love, Sex and 30 Candles on Netflix is based on your book The 30th Candle. What was your involvement in the adaptation of your book for screen?

I feel that fiction is subversive in that it allows us to reflect on uncomfortable truths without feeling hindered by societal or political dogma.

I was not involved in the adaptation at all, so the content was as much of a revelation to me as it was to any viewer seeing it for the first time. I’m quite excited with my current project though as I am working on the adaptation of Red Ink into a TV series. I’m hands-on with almost every aspect of the production and it’s a beautiful, sublime experience.

You studied journalism and became a crime reporter from which Red Ink was born – documenting the chilling encounter you had with a real-life serial killer. When writing this sequel, how has the foundation of Red Ink seeped into The Reed Dance Stalker? The Reed Dance Stalker picks up from the prison escape of Napoleon Dingiswayo, which marked the ending of Red Ink. However, an expected twist is revealed at the start of the book which sets the reader on a whirlwind adventure of hunter vs. prey…though it is not always clear who’s doing the hunting and who is the prey.

8

Your books speak to generational and cultural experiences, enquiring on subjects of sexuality, abuse, and womanhood. What do you think your next topic of interrogation will be? I’ve some thoughts brewing in my head on a book that is centered on motherhood. It’s such a pivotal part of my life that it’s something I’ve always wanted to celebrate. Word to the wise though…it would still be an Angela Makholwa book so there’ll be lots of quirks and twists even though I hope it will also brim with warmth and heart.

When I am Pilgrim debuted, it was the talk of the town – and by that, we mean the world. At a whopping 600 pages, Hayes masterfully weaved suspense, atmosphere and action into a story that transcended the page; making it a visceral, gritty and cinematic experience. Now 10 years later, The Year of the Locust promises to be an EPIC follow-up that sees Kane enter the belly of the badlands and save the world from extinction. How did you feel once you submitted your final manuscript for The Year of the Locust? 10 years of writing is no joke! Of course, you are right - ten years is a very long time! I can promise you, there were times when it felt like a hundred years. Similar to I Am Pilgrim, it is a big, epic, story that takes its hero – and the reader – from continent to continent, across oceans of time and through some pretty extraordinary experiences. It is a huge undertaking to come up with the story, do the research, find the words to describe the landscapes and the human emotions, to make the surprises and twists work and to have the reader emotionally engaged with the story you are trying to tell. Above all – you have to try and ensure that it is not boring. And that you don’t make a fool of yourself! So, after all of that, the overwhelming emotion was one of relief – and exhaustion. When I started, I had four young children and I am proud to say that I never missed a cricket match, a horse-riding lesson, a school play or was too busy to provide a shoulder to cry when the inevitable disappointments of life arrived. So, it was not all toiling away at the keyboard – I tried (and, according to the kids, failed miserably) to be a good parent. LOL.

You reached international acclaim with I Am Pilgrim – being praised by the likes of David Baldacci. What are some of the sincerest comments you’ve received? Yes, I was fortunate enough to receive a lot of praise for the novel – and some very harsh criticism too. Thankfully, they were in the minority and, at least in my mind, outweighed, by a host of other great reviews. But the most memorable ones were the people who said that they had given up reading, picked up the book, and it had reignited their love of plunging into a novel. Or those who said they had given it to a young man or woman, and they were now abandoning TikTok and were looking for another novel to start. Those people who have said that they have read the book three times and still found it enjoyable, also have a special place in my memory.

How did your story change (if it did) in the trenches of Covid? Or were there any other factors that made you rethink the plotline? I was quite a long way into Locust when Covid hit. I had traveled to London because my wife and I were in the process of relocating the family from Australia to the UK and I was acting as the forward scout. Because both my novels deal with leading-edge science, I have an interest in things like viruses and I told my wife on the phone not to worry; it would all be over in a couple of weeks. In other words, don’t trust me. So, it turned out that it was very difficult for me to return to Australia, because of the government’s restrictions and the family were not allowed to leave. I moved to Lisbon in Portugal, and decided to sit it out there. I don’t think anyone could have anticipated how long I would be sitting. I did not know a single person; I didn’t speak the language and a couple of weeks later the city went into complete lockdown. I did not see the family for over two years, so it was a difficult time. My editor said that the tone of the book – the sometimes harrowing experiences of the primary character – reflected the circumstances under which it was being written and when I read those sections through later, I had to agree with him. So, in a way, the plotline didn’t change, but the lead character did become slightly different.

Mary Beard

If you’re a TikTok fiend like many of us, you must’ve heard the trending question, “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?”. This trend went viral when women posed the question to the men in their lives, who responded with shocking answers ranging from once a week to three times a month, to every day – elaborating about the fundamentals that the Roman Empire has afforded modern society.

Who better to ask about the Roman Empire, but Mary Beard herself?

Batya Bricker, Exclusive Books GM of Books and Brand, chatted to who The Guardian calls “The world’s most famous classicist”. Dame Mary Beard is a renowned professor at Cambridge, the author of SPQR, which sold over 500, 000 copies worldwide, and the host of numerous BBC series.

Your new book explores what the emperors of Rome were really like, and it’s addictive reading. You ask big questions, like what they did and why, but also how they loved, how they ate, how they lived. So it’s less about going into each emperor and much more about what it was like to be a Roman emperor. Tell us more.

I think people often feel quite worried about reading about the Roman Empire because they think, ‘oh God, I can’t tell my Marcus Aurelius from my Antoninus Pius’. I want to say, don’t worry, it doesn’t matter. The Romans themselves often couldn’t tell who Marcus Aurelius was. And I have not the foggiest clue what the kings of England did mostly. But, you can think about monarchy, you can think about autocracy, and the emperors, without always pinning it down to an individual. And in a way, I do take my cue partly from one Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, who in quite a lot of his writing we have, looks back at his predecessors. And he says, I think quite rightly, it’s the same play, it’s just a different cast. What I’m interested in is the play. What’s the job description of an emperor? What do they do all day? What do they eat? And who’s helping them do it? A book called Emperor of Rome is not only about posh white men in Rome. It’s also about the enslaved people who kept the palace running. And it’s about all the people who took their problems to the Roman emperor. In a way, he’s a bit like a kind of universal agony aunt. You can see what the problems of the ordinary people in the empire were, the woman who’d lost her cow, the guy who was being charged because one of his slaves had dropped a chamber pot out of the top window and it killed somebody in the street below. Oh, was it intentional or was it not? How did the emperor travel? Did the emperor ever go into battle? What about all those lecherous wives he’s supposed to have had? Where did he live? What was a banquet with the emperor like? I’m actually very glad that I don’t have to go to one of those banquets. They sound like hell. So incredibly uncomfortable. Eating, lying down, propped up on your elbow with only one hand in operation, and no forks…trying to reach the food. The Romans are amazing at their kind of ingenuity in banqueting. But, one of the things that I think is the most pointless habit they had was having the dining couches around a pool of water and the servants taking the food across to the diners on little boats. Now, if we read about a modern celebrity doing that, we would say, how pointless. Indeed, indulgent - beyond indulgent, I think.

Would you have liked to have lived in ancient Rome? Not at all. For a start I’m a woman. I think nobody would like to live in ancient Rome really. Imagine living in a world without any modern medicine at all. Imagine being a woman. Imagine what childbirth was like in ancient Rome. I just dread to think. The idea that I would have no formal political rights… We get so entranced by all these Roman emperors who had power behind the throne. Well, sorry, I want power in front of the throne.

AUTHOR IN FOCUS

Arthur C. Brooks

Oprah Winfrey is a literary luminary, and a maverick of self-mastery through her spiritual learnings and lived experiences. Arthur C. Brooks is a Harvard Professor and a holistic thinker who threads everyday observations with scientific enquiry, and happiness training with personal development strategies.

Oprah and Arthur bring you Build the Life You Want – a book that will meet you where you are and show you how to make greater happiness a choice. Arthur C. Brooks shared his thoughts about this life-changing book: What moved you to start the research leading to Build the Life You Want?

What inspired you and Oprah to collaborate on this wonderful project? Oprah and I are kindred spirits. We both want to lift people up and bring them together in bonds of love and happiness. Our toolkits are different, though, so we brought them together in this book – and the projects to come.

Did any of the findings from your research surprise you while writing this book? The science of happiness is endlessly surprising, even to social scientists in the field. The big shock is that Mother Nature doesn’t conspire to make you happy, so the old ‘if it feels good, do it’ maxim is simply wrong. You have to choose the path to being happier.

Why is gratitude such a significant part of becoming happier? Gratitude is not natural – we are evolved to focus on the negative around us, not the positive. But in almost every life, there is plenty to be thankful for. Choosing to focus on that creates an almost miraculous mindshift.

My answer is so selfish: I wanted to get happier. I am a social scientist – I study human behavior – but I wasn’t always a very happy person. So along the way, I decided to turn my toolkit towards my own happiness. And what I found changed my life. I taught it to my students and it worked for them, too, so Oprah and I are bringing it to the world.

Why is it important to turn empathy into compassion?

What is Build the Life You Want about?

What makes you happy?

It’s easy to say this book is about how to be happy. But in truth, happiness is a direction, not a destination. The goal of this book is progress, no matter where anyone starts out. As Oprah likes to put it, the goal of the book is happier-ness.

My family, deep friendship, work that serves others, and my transcendent journey. These are the pillars on which to build the life each of us wants.

Empathy is to feel someone’s pain; compassion is to do something about it. The former is ok, but the latter actually changes lives. It also empowers you to solve a problem, not just share in it.

What book has inspired you? The first book that inspired me to build my own life is actually 1,800 years old – The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. This stoic classic was the Roman emperor’s private diary, encouraging himself to act like the man he wanted to be, not like he felt.

This feels like the start of a happiness movement, what’s next for the both of you?

A NOTE FROM

Steven Bartlett

Author, Entrepreneur, Podcaster, Changemaker I have 700 hours of recordings where I’ve interviewed your favourite authors, actors and CMOs; the world’s leading neuroscientists; the captain of your favourite sports team; the manager of your favourite sports team; the CEOs of the billion-dollar companies you use every day; and more of the world’s leading psychologists than I could possibly name. I published these conversations in the form of a podcast called The Diary Of A CEO, and that podcast quickly became the most downloaded podcast here in Europe and one of the top business podcasts in the USA, Ireland, Australia and the Middle East. It is arguably one of the fastest-growing podcasts in the world right now, increasing its listenership by 825 per cent last year alone. I’ve been lucky enough to be exposed to some unique experiences, and a few years ago it dawned on me how much valuable and powerful information I’ve gained – and only a handful of people on earth have access to that information. I also realised that at the very heart of all the success and failure I’ve seen, both in my own entrepreneurial journey and the hundreds of interviews I’ve conducted, were a set of laws that could stand the test of time, transfer to any industry, and be used by anyone who is trying to build something great or become someone great. This is not a book about business strategy. Strategy changes like the seasons. This is a book about something much more permanent. This is a book about the fundamental, enduring laws of building great things and becoming great yourself.

@steven

The design of this book is based on five core beliefs: 1. I believe most books are longer than they need to be. 2. I believe most books are more complicated than they need to be.

3. I believe pictures paint a thousand words. 4. I believe stories are more powerful than data, but both are important. 5. I believe in nuance and that the truth is often somewhere in the middle. In short, it aims to embody a quote often attributed to Einstein: ‘Everything should be as simple as possible, but not simpler. ’ To me, this means giving you the fundamental truth and understanding of each law, in the exact number of words necessary to do so – no less, no more – and using powerful imagery and incredible real stories to bring the key points to life.

‘Everything should be as simple as possible, but not simpler.’

AUTHOR IN FOCUS

Walter Isaacson

The biographer that brought us the life, trials and brilliance of Apple’s founding father, Steve Jobs and the spellbinding portrait of Leonardo da Vinci, lifts the lid on the world’s richest man, and arguably the most controversial South African – Elon Musk. In a special interview published on Netwerk24 (and later on News24), journalist Murray La Vita spoke to Isaacson about the man who challenges the status quo, and his egregious yet ingenious pioneership of innovation; questioning the limits of technology and conquering the frontiers of space. Why did you write a biography of Elon Musk? I think that he’s an epic figure. Somebody who brought us into the era of space travel and commercial space travel and electric vehicles and now artificial intelligence. About two and a half years ago, I started talking to Musk and I said, “I want to do this book,” partly because he was transforming the world through electric vehicles and through space travel. I thought it was a simple technology book. Of course, it became more complicated after he decided to buy Twitter, and he’s a complicated individual. I said, “I want to be by your side. I don’t want to do this book based on a few interviews. I want to spend day after day, hour after hour, just watching you in action, and I want to talk to everybody around you, and I don’t want you to have any control over the book.” I was surprised when he said yes.

In the biography, Isaacson describes Musk’s childhood in South Africa, focusing on how he was bullied at school and the severely detrimental psychological impact that his father Errol’s behaviour had – and still has – on Musk. His childhood, like everything in his life, was very mixed, with ups and downs and lights and darks. His father is a brilliant engineer, often very successful. His father had all sorts of books about how things are made. His father had a feel for material science. So, Elon Musk got two good things from his father. One is instincts about engineering. And the second is that there were times where his father was very successful and sent him to a very good school, especially after he was bullied at a previous school. They went on vacations together. He took him to America. They had nice cars. They had the wilderness lodge. So, there were good things. But, as he tells me in the book, Errol had light and dark swings and sometimes was very authoritarian in his approach. He would berate Elon and his brother, Kimball, sometimes for an hour at a time, and that left some psychological scars.

From 2017 to 2018, he went through a psychological tailspin, a real hell. Justine Wilson, Musk’s first wife, said of him that “he learnt to shut down fear. If you turn off fear, then maybe you have to turn off other things, like joy and empathy.”

Isaacson writes in detail about the run-up to Musk’s decision to buy Twitter and what has happened since. He also shares his thoughts as to why Musk wanted to own this controversial social medium – among others, because he believes Twitter is “infected with what he calls the ‘woke mind virus’”. What he means is a progressive left ideology that he thought had influenced his daughter, Jenna, when she was in school, to become very left wing and very Marxist. He also thought that it was causing American politics to be too careful about the amount of free speech people are allowed to have. They were trying to suppress people saying things like mask mandates don’t work or the shutdowns for Covid were going too far...

Musk nearly died in January 2001 after contracting malaria during a visit to South Africa. According to Isaacson, Musk then said: “South Africa ... that place is still trying to kill me.” When asked to elaborate on Musk’s feelings about South Africa, Isaacson says the South Africa in which Musk grew up was “a very interesting place”. I hope someday he actually goes back on a long trip to South Africa and he reconciles with all of the memories he has there. It would be very difficult to get him to spend two or three weeks again in South Africa, but maybe at some point that will happen and he’ll remember the good times he had there and the things he learned there that were valuable. On the conversational MEnu with

Ilse van der Merwe

Nominated as “The One to Watch” by Ina Paarman, Ilse van der Merwe, more affectionately known as ‘The Food Fox’, is heroing food in all its splendor - Ilse does it all and shares it all. Easy Al Fresco ushers us into the ‘kitchen playground’ outside; as Ilse says, this should be the only book you pack for your next trail hike, fishing weekend, game reserve trip or seaside holiday! South Africans always look forward to summer – festivities are beckoning! What are some outdoor cooking hacks that can add flavour, and save time? “Keeping things simple” is always my motto! When you choose fresh, quality produce, you’re half way there. Some store-bought pantry staples like harissa paste or miso will help you make instant umami-packed marinades. And keep a glass jar with lid handy to shake up zippy dressings for salads and vegetables.

What are the food trends that you have seen take off recently? People are embracing our natural Mediterranean way of living and homegrown produce. Since writing my first book, Cape Mediterranean, I’ve seen people respond to it with much enthusiasm. Easy Al Fresco is a continuation hereof, but taking it outside with even simpler recipes. Another trend is “off-grid cooking”, because of our continued load shedding in SA. If you have access to a one plate gas hob, sometimes a fire, a plankie and very basic tools like a knife, spoon and mixing bowl, you might just cook your way through every recipe in Easy Al Fresco.

If you could create a dish inspired by any book, what would it be? I love Karen Dudley’s new book - Onwards. It is loaded with clever ideas on how to turn simple pantry staples into lip-smacking delights. I’d probably create a roasted veg salad topped with a crunchy spiced seed mix with added toasty bread crumbs, drizzled with a tahini-based citrus dressing.

The Food Fox is your blogging platform that’s become every foodie’s one-stop hub.

What is your go-to Christmas drink or cocktail? I always prefer a good local Brut Cap Classsique for festive occasions something like a Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel. The best!

Strangely enough, I resonate much deeper with Julia Child than with Julie. She was almost my height (I’m very tall at 1,90m, I think Julia was 1,88), and she was incredibly determined to create a life of food on her terms. She only enrolled in a cooking school in her late thirties, while I also made my career change from music management to food writing in my mid-thirties. Her pioneering spirit and belief in her own unique style has always been a huge inspiration to me!

Do you ever feel like Julie in the book My Life in France or better known by the movie, Julie and Julia, who cooks from Julia Child’s cookbook, documents her experience and blogs to her readers?

Falafel burgers

with guacamole, tomato and rocket

We know that vegetable-based burgers are a clever, sustainable choice, but they’re also utterly delicious and need to be on your menu at least once a month. As mentioned in my recipe for Spiced falafel balls with crispy curry leaves (page 74), I choose to keep it simple and use a convenient store-bought falafel premix for the chickpea patties – it just needs water to come together. Take them to the next level with the addition of some fresh herbs and garlic, a few dried spices, ripe tomatoes, creamy guacamole and peppery rocket leaves. Keep it completely vegan by toasting the cut side of the buns with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil (or butter if you prefer), before assembly.

Serves 4 Tools: grater | medium mixing bowl | cutting board | chopping knife | spoon | non-stick baking paper | plate or tray | serrated knife | non-stick frying pan | spatula

Ingredients 1 × 200 g packet falafel premix 5–10 ml (1–2 tsp) braai spice a handful fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped (optional) 2 cloves garlic, finely grated or chopped 200 ml (3⁄4 cup) hot water 4 large burger buns olive oil, for frying, plus extra vegan mayonnaise (optional) a small bunch fresh rocket or watercress 1 batch Yoghurt guacamole (page 39), or freshly mashed avocado 2 large tomatoes (red or green), sliced

Method Add the premix, spice, parsley, garlic and water to a mixing bowl, then mix to a stiff paste. Divide into four portions and shape into balls (work with wet hands to prevent sticking, if necessary). Gently flatten each ball with the palm of your hands to a diameter similar to the burger buns, then place each on a small square of non-stick baking paper and set them aside on a plate or tray (the paper makes them easier to handle).

Easy Al Fresco

Slice the buns in half horizontally, drizzle the cut sides lightly with oil, then fry the cut sides in a pan over medium heat until golden brown (work in batches).

Ilse van der Merwe ISBN: 9781485901594

Set the buns aside, then add more oil to the pan and place the patties paper-side up in the pan, removing the paper. Fry the patties on both sides until golden brown and cooked. Remove from the heat. To assemble, arrange the bottom halves of the toasted buns on plates, then top generously with mayonnaise (if using), rocket or watercress, fried patties, guacamole or avocado and sliced tomato.

In July you won your appeal to the European Court of Human Rights which called for you to reduce your testosterone levels to participate in World Athletics as a woman. What does this win mean for you, and for the equality of sport and gender? This win for me signifies that the fight for humanity and for others to be accepted as they are and treated with dignity and respect has been recognized. It is a proud feeling for me to know that my team and I are at the helm of bringing attention to such issues. That we are making significant changes in the sports fraternity. It also means our youth can come into an environment that is inclusive. I hope that they are learning through me to always stand on the side of what is right without fear.

Over the last 13 years, your personal life and physicality have been interrogated for the world to see. How has the mindset and discipline of being an athlete equipped you for the adversity you have endured? When I run a race, my approach is always to lock out the outside world and my opponents. My vision at that point is me, and the road ahead. I run my own race. How I choose to run the race is ultimately what contributes towards the end goal. Its me against me. This mindset is what has set me apart from other athletes. This approach is one that I use beyond the track. This display of independence, courage, motivation, and strength is what has helped me persevere throughout my journey thus far.

What has the role of coach for the next generation of athletes shown you about yourself? It has given me insight to myself as a person and an athlete and made me view who Caster is like I never

have before. The hardest thing to do in life is to critique yourself. To say this has been a defining moment would be an understatement. I have learnt to acknowledge the best parts of me...and pour that into my students.

Your partnership with Nike, and your 2018 advert, “When you’re born to do it, just do it” – was a revolutionary moment for many. How has partnering with one of the best in sports apparel shown you the power of platform? My relationship with Nike is one that dates back to the start of my career. Nike has taught me the importance of family outside the conventional family setting. The Nike Brand for me represents so much more. They have surpassed the point of a business relationship and have put my needs above profit. I have always been allowed to be myself and have flourished under their guidance, love and support. This relationship remains one of the best experiences of my career. To be affiliated with access to such a powerful platform is a success story on its own. It feels great to be a part of a winning team with solid values.

You likened your love with your partner to the movie “Love and Basketball” – a movie about young love, the desire to be the best, and friendship through it all. How has your partner and your family been a strong force in your life? My partner is one phenomenal woman and her support has been essential to my success. She has been with me since the very beginning and has never left my side. I am truly blessed to have been able to experience unconditional love. I am grateful to have love and support of my entire family and children too.

What words of advice would you tell the 18-year-old Caster Semenya who was at the precipice of her journey? The advice I would give young Caster is...do not forget to celebrate yourself...in whatever way you would like to. Take a moment to acknowledge how much you have achieved and keep giving them hell!

33

@MightyCaster

Now is a good time for me to tell my story simply because I am ready. Over the years my focus has been on performing and being the great athlete I am today. The focus that is required to become great athlete does not allow for pauses. I am now at a place where I have time to reflect, I am also at a place where I am mentally and emotionally ready to share my story.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Whether you know her from her remarkable body of work which includes Americanah, Half of a Yellow Sun and We Should All Be Feminists – which was sampled by Beyoncé and is now sung – bellowed flawlessly, by millions Chimamanda is one of the most important literary voices of today, whose words have coloured history, giving power to women and Black lives.

Now, writing as Nwa Grace James, Chimamanda delivers Mama’s Sleeping Scarf - her debut In my fiction, I’m drawn to melancholy and a certain children’s book, which has been hailed as kind of dark complexity in human nature. Then I had my ‘tender and joyful’. daughter and I just I saw how she loved being read [to],

[I’m] happy to announce that she liked [it] in the end which means very much to me. She’s very clear and direct about what she thinks about things. I love that she seemed really wrapped up - she was paying attention which I thought was the best compliment, because she’s very easily bored.

Why did you decide to write a children’s book now? How is it different to writing an adult’s book? I’ve been thinking about a children’s book really since I had my daughter. Before, when people asked me why I don’t do children’s books, I would say that my vision is too dark and that I don’t want to be responsible for traumatizing children...

One of the things I found [was] that books [that] had Black children in them [were] more likely to be doing very worthy things. Somebody gave [my daughter] a book on her birthday and it was about a child who was an activist and I thought, I really want her to read books in which ordinary children do things and have adventures rather than the idea that somehow you cannot talk about Black life without making it an issue at all, without politicizing it. It’s not all books, obviously, but it’s something I’ve noticed quite a bit... [diversity in publishing] has improved and I think there’s still a long way to go.

Mama’s Sleeping Scarf Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, writing as Nwa Grace James

@ChimamandaReal

You started writing Mama’s Sleeping Scarf in 2019 when your daughter was three years old. She is seven this year – how has she reacted to this story?

What do you hope to see in children’s literature in the future?

@chimamanda_adichie

I think losing both my parents in such a short time just completely shifted everything. Suddenly there’s this burning desire to remember them because one of the things about grief is that you’re terrified of waiting. Many of the things I know about my very early childhood were stories that I was told by my parents. I think it’s the stories that were constructed from those moments. I want my daughter to remember the love that her grandparents had for her.

and how she would light up when something was familiar to her, when something was silly, when there was a lot of repetition. It was not until my mother died that I actually sat down to write it.

Playing games

I reach for my king. Pick it up. Feel its slight, perfect weight in my hand and smile softly as I trace the corners of the crown. The stupid, useless, good-for-nothing king. Can barely move one square, scurries into hiding behind the rook, and he’s so, so easy to corner. A fraction of the queen’s power, that’s what he has. He is nothing, absolutely nothing, without his kingdom. My heart squeezes. At least he’s relatable. I put the king back on his square and stare at the skyline made up by the pieces—the trivial and yet monumental landscape of chess. It’s more familiar than the view from my childhood bedroom (unspectacular: a busted trampoline, lots of ornery squirrels, an apricot tree that never learned how to bear fruit). It’s more familiar than my own face in the mirror, and I can’t tear my gaze away, not even when the chair in front of mine drags across the floor, not even when one of the tournament directors calls for round one to begin. wThe table shifts as my opponent takes a seat. A large hand stretches into my line of sight. And just as I’m about to force myself out of my reverie to shake it, I hear a deep voice say, “Marshall Chess Club Player One. Nolan Sawyer.”

alihazelwood

@alihazelwood

@EverSoAli

He’s not looking at me. He’s holding out his hand, but his eyes are on the board, and for a split second I can’t figure out what is happening, where I am, or what I came here to do. I can’t figure out what my name is. No. Wait. I do know that. “Mallory Greenleaf,” I stammer, taking his hand. It completely engulfs mine. His shake is brief, warm, and very, very firm. “PCC. That is, Paterson. Club. Uh, chess club.” I clear my throat. Wow. So eloquent. Much articulate. “Nice to meet you,” I lie. He lies right back at me with a “Likewise,” and still doesn’t look up. Just sets his elbows on the table, keeping his gaze fixed on the pieces, as though my person, my face, my identity, are utterly irrelevant. As though I am but an extension of the white side of the board. It cannot be. This guy cannot be Nolan Sawyer. Or, not the Nolan Sawyer. The guy who a couple of years ago was number one in the world and now . . . I have no clue what Nolan Sawyer’s up to now, but he can’t be sitting across from me. The people on our left and right seem to be not-so-subtly eyeing him, and I want to yell at them that this is just a doppelgänger. Plenty of those going around. Doppelgänger-palooza, these days. It would explain why he’s sitting there, doing nothing. Clearly, bizarro Nolan Sawyer doesn’t know how to play and thought this would be a mah-jongg tournament and is wondering where the tiles are and— Someone clears their throat. It’s the player sitting next to me: a middle-aged man who’s neglecting his own match to gawk at mine, pointedly staring between me and my pieces. Which are white. Rivals Shit— I have the first move. What do I do? Where do I start? Which piece do I use? Pawn to e4. There. Done. The most common, boring— “My clock,” Sawyer murmurs distractedly. His eyes are on my pawn. “What?” “I need you to start my clock, or I won’t be able to respond.” He sounds bored, with a dash of annoyed. I flush scarlet, utterly mortified, and look around. I can’t find the stupid clock until someone—Sawyer—pushes it an inch toward me. It was right by my left hand. Perfect. Lovely. Now would be an excellent time for the floor to morph into quicksand. Swallow me alive, too. “I’m sorry. Um—I knew about the clock. But I forgot, and—” And I’m thinking of stabbing myself in the eyeball with that pencil over there. Is it yours? Can I borrow it? “It’s fine.” He makes his move—pawn in e5. Starts my clock. Then it’s my turn again, and—shit, I’m gonna have to move more than once. Against Nolan Sawyer. This is unjust. A travesty. Pawn in d4, maybe? And then, after he takes my pawn, I move another to c3. Wait, what am I doing? Am I . . . I’m not trying a Danish Gambit with Nolan Sawyer, am I? The Danish Gambit is one of the most aggressive openings in chess. Dad’s voice rings in my ears. You sacrifice two pieces in the first few moves—then shift quickly into attack. Most good players will have learned how to defend themselves. If you really must use it, make sure you have a solid follow-up plan. I briefly consider my glaring lack of follow-up plans. Well, then. I could really use a puke bucket, but instead I just sigh and resignedly push my bishop into the midst, because the more the merrier. This is a disaster. Send help.

Q&A WITH

Bea Fitzgerald Bea Fitzgerald has worked in publishing for a number of years and has a degree in English Literature from the University of Reading, where she also studied several classes in Ancient History. Bea is passionate about stories and fascinated by the way they endure and resonate through centuries and generations. When she’s not writing, she’s entertaining her followers on TikTok with her mythology-themed comedy I’ve also drawn a more modern sense of patriarchy into the book – so in addition to Persephone’s fight account @chaosonolympus which has against the will of her Father, Girl, Goddess, Queen amassed over 116,000 followers. also addresses matters of toxic masculinity, rape

It is inspired by Greek mythology and set in a fantasy world that draws from both mythology and the ancient world. In many ways, it’s a love letter both to Greek mythology and the ways that these stories continue to resonate with readers. It is as inspired by the modern world as it is the ancient – Persephone is a glorious mix of the terrifying queen of the underworld who might send a gorgon head after Odysseus and an anxious teenager pressured by the expectations the world has of her. I sincerely hope that anyone who loves these stories already enjoys the way they’re threaded through the story and anyone encountering them for the first time might be inspired to find out more about these myths that mean so much to so many people.

Why did you choose the Hades and Persephone myth to reimagine and how did you apply a feminist perspective to this story? Persephone is one of the most fascinating goddesses in Greek mythology – a queen who wields power, a girl suffering under her Father’s will and a goddess connected with the underworld long before Hades comes along to give her that title. Drawing her into the world of Girl, Goddess, Queen, she is a character suffering under the patriarchy of her own Father, Zeus. This is very much a world inspired by Greek mythology – and the threats of patriarchy are in many ways quite literal. Persephone has shaped her whole self into the kind of girl who might survive this world and knows when to nod meekly and keep her mouth shut. But now, she’s going to use those expectations against them and fight to be the person she really is.

Why is it so important to you to depict romance on the page? I think love is aspirational and something that shapes a lot of people’s lives. To me it’s important to see it depicted on the page as that aspirational thing – so I wanted to write the kind of romantic hero I wanted to see in a book, to write the kind of healthy, enduring love I wanted to aim for and to write two people who find so much joy with one another that love becomes a form of happiness. In Girl, Goddess, Queen love is a powerful thing – not only in romance but through friendships and family bonds. Romance books promise a certain kind of love that creates the happily ever after, so for me I wanted to put on the page that the right kind of love can be healing, empowering and give us the strength to not only be ourselves but the safety to find out who that is.
