A Message From Our CEO

Dear Neighbors,

As the blossoming spring revitalizes our community, Excelsior Wellness emphasizes the intrinsic connection between our environment and well-being. Our commitment to preserving the natural beauty of our neighborhood and community is unwavering. In the coming weeks, you’ll notice site work on our main campus, a tangible expression of our dedication to improving healthcare access for community members while conscientiously safeguarding our local landscape.

This initiative signifies more than just physical enhancements; it represents our pledge to prioritize community health and environmental stewardship. As we embark on this transformative journey, your continued support remains invaluable. Together, we navigate the path towards nurturing not only the well-being of our community but also contributing positively to the planet we collectively call home.

The forthcoming enhancements align with our vision of creating a harmonious coexistence between the provision of quality healthcare and the preservation of our natural surroundings. We look forward to sharing the progress and achievements of this journey with you.

In this edition of our Wellness Waves magazine, we are thrilled to share insights and strategies that illuminate the profound impact of spring cleaning on our health and wellbeing. As we welcome the spring season, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the spaces we live, work, and play—both physically and mentally.

This issue delves into the art of decluttering, not just as a task of tidying up but as a transformative process that nurtures our mental health, boosts our productivity, and enhances our overall sense of peace. We’ll explore practical tips for organizing our living spaces, mindful approaches to letting go of what no longer serves us, and the benefits of creating environments that support our best selves.

Through expert advice and actionable strategies, you’ll discover that the essence of spring cleaning transcends the physical act of clearing out. It’s an opportunity to refresh our outlook, renew our priorities, and realign with our values. Remember, it’s not about how much you give or throw away; it’s about how much you are willing to let go of.

You’ve got this!

Warm regards,

Andrew Hill
IT’S NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU GIVE AWAY; IT’S ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU ARE WILLING TO LET GO OF.

Own Less, Declutter

Spring cleaning isn’t just about decluttering your physical space; it can also have a significant impact on your mental well-being. As the days grow longer and warmer, here are some tips to help you rejuvenate both your home and your mental health:

1. Set Realistic Goals: Start small and tackle one area at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Achieving small tasks can boost your confidence and reduce stress.

2. Declutter Mindfully: Clearing out physical clutter can create a sense of order in your surroundings, which can positively influence your mental clarity and focus.

3. Open Windows and Let in Fresh Air: Airing out your home can improve indoor air quality, helping you breathe easier and enhancing your overall mood.

4. Play Uplifting Music: Put on your favorite tunes while you clean. Music has the power to elevate your mood and make the cleaning process more enjoyable.

5. Practice Mindfulness: Use cleaning as an opportunity to practice mindfulness. Focus on each task and be present in the moment, which can reduce stress and anxiety.

6 . Embrace Greenery: Incorporate indoor plants into your decor. They not only purify the air but also bring a touch of nature indoors, promoting tranquility.

7. Reward Yourself: After each cleaning session, treat yourself to something you enjoy, like a cup of tea or a relaxing bath, as a way to acknowledge your progress.

8. Donate and Recycle: Giving away items you no longer need can create a sense of purpose and satisfaction, knowing you’re helping others and reducing waste.

Did you know?

Hey there, clutter conquerors! Are you ready to embark on a decluttering adventure that will leave you feeling lighter, freer, and possibly a tad bit more organized? Well, buckle up, because we’re about to dive into the wild world of decluttering like never before!

Decluttering Dilemma #1: The Sentimental Stash

Picture this: stacks of letters from Great Aunt Kathy and a pile of Christmas cards from 2016 gathering dust in your closet. Do you really need to hold onto every piece of paper that comes your way? Spoiler alert: No one’s conducting a pop quiz on your card collection. Snap a pic, say your goodbyes, and make space for memories that truly spark joy.

Decluttering Dilemma #2: Kid’s Art Attack

Ah, the art gallery that is your fridge! Your little artist’s creations are multiplying faster than bunnies in spring. It’s time to digitize those finger paintings and pasta collages or create a masterpiece binder for future reminiscing sessions. Your fridge magnets will thank you for the breathing room!

Decluttering Dilemma #3: The Pricey Predicament

Donate to Our Care Center

In the spirit of spring cleaning and community support, we encourage you to consider donating to our Excelsior Wellness Center Care Closet initiative. The Care Closet is a vital resource that extends a helping hand to community members in need. We gladly accept donations of canned goods and other non-perishable items to ensure that individuals and families facing challenges have access to nutritious meals. Additionally, we welcome contributions of diapers, feminine hygiene products, and gently used clothing for children, youth, and adolescents. Your generosity can make a significant difference in the lives of those who rely on these essential items.

IF YOU DON’T LOVE IT OR USE IT, WHY ARE YOU KEEPING IT?

We’ve all fallen victim to the allure of the impulse buy that turns into clutter regret. That pricey item you thought would change your life? It’s now just taking up space and collecting dust bunnies. It’s time to Marie Kondo that guilt away and bid adieu to the clutter that no longer serves you. Remember, a clutter-free home is a happy home!

So, dear reader, grab your decluttering cape and get ready to conquer the chaos with a sprinkle of humor and a dash of determination. Let’s declutter like nobody’s watching (because they’re not, trust me) and create a space that radiates joy and tranquility.

Happy decluttering, you fearless clutter-busting champion!

By coming together as a community, we strengthen our bonds and exemplify the values of compassion and care that are at the heart of Excelsior Wellness Center’s mission. So, as you embark on your spring cleaning journey, please consider making a donation to the Care Closet, knowing that your contribution will directly impact those in need within our community.

Remember, spring cleaning isn’t just about a cleaner home; it’s an opportunity to refresh your mental state and create a more harmonious living environment. So, take it one step at a time, and enjoy the mental health benefits that come with a rejuvenated space.

Eric Kurtzbein

A Legacy of Dedication and Committment:

A 31-Year Journey at Excelsior

For over three decades, Eric Kurtzbein has been the heartbeat of Excelsior Wellness, infusing every day with dedication, passion, and a boundless commitment to service. As Director of Plant Operations, his leadership and tireless efforts have shaped Excelsior into the thriving community it is today.

Eric’s journey began as a young man, eager to make a difference. Through a program with ESD 101, he took his first steps into the world of service, starting with simple tasks like raking maple leaves. From those humble beginnings, Eric’s dedication and skill propelled him forward, earning him certifications and respect within the organization.

But Eric’s impact extends far beyond the confines of his official duties. After hours, he embarked on a side project for a fellow employee, unaware that it would change his life forever. Upon seeing a picture on the employee’s wall, Eric inquired about the woman depicted, who turned out to be the employee’s sister. With a boldness fueled

by destiny, Eric asked his coworker to invite her to Excelsior’s Christmas party. A year later, they were married, embarking on a journey of love and partnership that has lasted 27 years and counting.

As Director of Plant Operations, Eric has overseen countless projects and initiatives aimed at improving the infrastructure and facilities of Excelsior. His attention to detail and unwavering commitment to excellence have earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and community members alike.

Looking to the future, Eric envisions Excelsior continuing to thrive, with new initiatives like charging stations for vehicles and a vibrant arboretum. As we celebrate Eric’s 31 years of unwavering commitment, we are reminded that his legacy is not just one of professional achievement, but of love, family, and the transformative power of service. Excelsior is grateful for Eric’s profound impact and looks forward to the positive contributions he will continue to make in the years to come.

Cultivating Connections

The Healing Gardens

Within the nurturing bounds of Excelsior Wellness, a verdant garden thrives, symbolizing a beacon of hope and connection for youth navigating the complexities of life with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and developmental delays. This garden, meticulously cared for by certified recreation therapists and counselors, offers a unique setting where young individuals can explore and communicate in the serene language of nature. Here, amidst the flora, the act of gardening transcends traditional therapy, providing a silent yet profound platform for expression and connection, empowering these young minds to express themselves beyond the confines of verbal communication.

Under the guidance of skilled professionals, the garden becomes a classroom without walls, a place where therapeutic goals are met with hands in the soil, nurturing plants from seed to bloom. This immersive experience not only aids in the emotional and psychological growth of the youth but also instills a sense of responsibility, accomplishment, and the therapeutic benefits of connecting with the natural world. It’s a place where the quiet act of gardening fosters personal growth and self-discovery, allowing these young individuals to flourish alongside the plants they care for, in an environment that respects and understands their unique ways of experiencing the world.

This story of the garden at Excelsior Wellness is more than a narrative; it’s an open invitation to young people and their support networks to engage in a form of healing that’s both ancient and innovative. The garden stands as a testament to the power of nature’s therapy, offering a peaceful, grounding experience that promotes connection, not just with the earth, but with oneself and the broader community. In this verdant oasis, youth find a space where they can grow in confidence and connectivity, nurtured by the environment and the dedicated professionals who guide them through their journey.

Start Your

Spring Fling

Decluttering can be a liberating experience, transforming your living spaces into organized and stressfree environments. Whether it’s your room, house, or garage, follow these tips to streamline your space.

1 2 3 6

4 5 7

Set Clear Goals: Define your objectives and what you want to achieve with the decluttering process. This will help you stay focused and motivated.

Start Small: Begin with a manageable area, like a single drawer or closet, before tackling larger spaces. Small victories build confidence.

Sort and Categorize: Divide items into categories (e.g., keep, donate, discard). This helps you make decisions more efficiently.

Use the 80/20 Rule: Keep the 20% of items you use regularly and consider letting go of the 80% that you rarely use.

Declutter Digitally: Extend the process to your digital life. Organize files, delete duplicates, and unsubscribe from emails you no longer need.

Create a System: Designate specific places for regularly used items, and make sure everything has a designated spot.

Declutter One Item at a Time: Concentrate on one item within a category before moving to the next. This prevents feeling overwhelmed.

Seek Help

If the task feels overwhelming, consider enlisting the help of a friend or hiring a professional organizer.

Take It Slow

Decluttering is a journey, not a sprint. Dedicated Dedicate a little time each day or week to maintain your spaces.

10

Celebrate Your Progress

Acknowledge your achievements along the way. Reward yourself for completing decluttering milestones.

11

Prevent Future Clutter: Adopt a “one in, one out” rule for new items. Whenever you bring something new into your space, consider letting go of something old.

12

Maintain Regularly: Make decluttering a habit. Spend a few minutes each day tidying up to prevent clutter from piling up again.

Maintaining a clean home and actively participating in the cleaning process is beneficial for your well-being.

Research indicates that cleaning, or the absence of it, can directly affect mental health. If you find yourself facing challenges and yearning for a tidy and organized home but lack the energy to achieve it, consider starting small. Even simple tasks like picking up clothes from the floor one day and loading the dishwasher the next can make cleaning more manageable and less overwhelming, fostering a positive impact on your environment and mental state.
