Welcome Disabled Living is a charity providing impartial information and advice about equipment and products (assistive technology) to make life easier for disabled adults, children, older people and those who support them. Our team of health and social care professionals, together with knowledgeable information workers offer practical solutions to what may seem like unmanageable problems. Accessing Disabled Living’s resources offer clients the information they require to make informed choices when purchasing equipment. Our free occupational therapy assessments at the Disabled Living Centre offer people the opportunity to try before they buy, ensuring they do not make unnecessary and costly purchases. We welcome you to visit our purpose designed Disabled Living Centre, located in Worsley which has been developed in partnership with Salford Disability Equipment Services. The Centre, with good parking facilities and close to the major motorway junctions has benefited from a £750,000 investment package from The Social Investment Business and offers people from throughout the North West region a ‘Centre of Excellence for Assistive Technology’. Disabled Living offers a diverse range of services to support individuals and those working in the statutory, commercial and third sectors. Ultimately our aim is to ensure people remain independent for as long as possible and to improve the quality of life for our clients and their families.

Simplyhealth at the Disabled Living Centre

As we grow older it often becomes increasingly difficult to maintain our independence. Everyday living tasks, which we normally take for granted, can become a real challenge. It’s not just getting out and about that can become difficult either. In and around the home even the simplest activities, such as getting out of a chair, dressing or bathing can become a real frustration. It is sometimes possible to get help from the local Social Services Occupational Therapy team. Nonetheless, in many cases people prefer to find solutions independently, often with the help of other family members. However, unless you’ve had personal experience of disability or the challenges that come with growing older, it’s difficult to know where to go to find help. Simplyhealth is a specialist retailer of products for elderly and disabled people and has a store at Disabled Living, Burrows House, 10 Priestley Road, Wardley Industrial Estate, Worsley, Manchester M28 2LY . If you visit the store you’ll receive a warm welcome from Teresa the Manager and her friendly, knowledgeable staff. They can provide advice to help you select the products that are right for you. Even a small inexpensive piece of equipment can make a big difference when it comes to making life easier. We are also experts in mobility products and have a very extensive range of walkers, wheelchairs and scooters to help you get out and about.

Redbank House Following an extensive fire at Redbank House in December 2009 (formerly the home of the Disabled Living Centre) the building has been completely refurbished and is now a ‘Health & Social Care Hub’. This vibrant, modern, accessible and welcoming environment is five minutes walk from Manchester City Centre. The ‘hub’ provides lower cost office accommodation, training and meeting room facilities primarily for Third Sector organisations or those supporting the development of health and social care services. The ‘hub’ will provide an environment where organisations can share resources, network and form partnerships which hopefully will lead to long term sustainability.

Sensurround Rooms Disabled Living has two sensurround rooms at Redbank House in Cheetham. These fabulous rooms are a place where adults and children with special needs can explore and develop their senses and skills. The multi-sensory rooms will have many different features ranging from soft areas, padded floors and walls together with interactive equipment which make dramatic changes to the sensory room environment using sound, lighting and fragrancing. There are significant benefits to both children and adults who use the facilities. They become interested in their environment. The overactive can be calmed, the inactive become interested. The partially sighted can see the vivid moving colours. Those mobile can chase the slowly moving images. The whole room can change colour by applying pressure to simple switches or pressure pads. Colours can move or change simply by making a noise and for those with severe special needs the sensory room can be set to automatically change programs, giving a constantly changing and interesting environment that is probably the most pleasant environment they have ever experienced even if all they can do is lay and enjoy it!
