WILL WRITING MAKING A WILL MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE

Charitable gifts and legacies from Wills are the foundation of so many good causes in the United Kingdom. But did you know that whilst 74% of people support charity during their lifetime only 6.3% leave charitable gifts under their Wills. There are a number of ways in which we can benefit a charity in our Will. We may like to leave a pecuniary gift or otherwise a gift of some or all of our residuary estate. We may want to benefit a national charity or perhaps a local charity or local branch of a national charity. Also bear in mind that there may well be a change in the value of your estate between the date of making your Will and your demise. So it is important to keep your Will under review regularly. At Morrisons Solicitors we will take you step-by-step through the process, supporting you along the way, so that you can be confident that your wishes are accurately captured and that your legacy is secure.

AGE CONCERN SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES Merstham Day Centre Open: Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays 9.30am – 3.30pm The aim of our Day Centre is to provide the opportunity for local older people to socialise, form friendships, participate in mental stimulation through leisure activities and to receive a hot meal. Support and advice for varying issues can also be given, thus alleviating isolation and loneliness, promoting good health and preventing hospitalisation. We try to offer a wide range of activities, regularly inviting guest speakers and entertainers to the centre. We have special events and theme days throughout the year and try to incorporate the various themes into our activity sessions, for example, making the decorations for the Halloween Celebrations. We regularly receive sponsorship from local charities and organisations to help fund special events, for example, local Rotary Clubs who have funded our Christmas parties and a big Royal Wedding ‘Street Party’ to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle. The day centre members help with fundraising activities by holding raffles, bingo, clothes and book sales etc. We offer gentle exercises on Fridays and the WEA often provide free arts and crafts classes and other courses for our members. Although the age range for membership to Age Concern MRR is 55 plus, the average age group within the day centre is 78-88 years and the majority of members are female but the men’s shed is now attracting more male members to the centre. Men’s Shed A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work.

This is the newest service to be offered at Merstham Day Centre. We have a large shed in the garden, fully equipped with carpentry tools so that the men can have a place to call their own. The shed is a place for men to be together, do some woodwork, make things for themselves, the centre or the community and generally have a good time. The emphasis is on make do and mend, most projects come from reclaimed timber and we sell finished items to make money to fund new projects.

No Bingo! No singalongs! A fully fitted and heated workshop awaits, with all the tools and timber on hand – and as much tea as you can drink. For further information or to organise a trial visit, call in to see Simon in the shed during opening hours, or phone him on 0755 7950 628 or phone the office on 01737 645636

Can you help? We appreciate donations of unwanted tools and equipment that you may have, and we need an ongoing supply of timber, and consumables for our projects. Please let us know if you have anything that we can use – always happy to collect from the local area. Befriending Service The Befriending Service provides an opportunity for genuine friendship for people who live alone and have very limited contact with family and/or friends. Volunteers are carefully matched with clients with shared interests and hobbies and will make their own arrangements regarding visiting and any outings directly with the clients. All our volunteer befrienders are enhanced DBS checked and jointly interviewed for suitability for the role. Some of our befrienders have continued to befriend the same older person for several years and have formed genuine friendships. This is a vital service, helping to alleviate social isolation and loneliness, and is extremely beneficial for our members. Transport We have a 12-seater mini bus which is used to transport members to and from the day centre, and also for the outings and shopping trips. This service is utilised by most of our members because it provides a door to door service which is safer and more comfortable than trying to use public transport. Our paid driver manages the transport service and we have an excellent team of volunteer drivers and escorts to assist him. However, we are always looking for more volunteers to cover staff/volunteer holidays and other commitments. Shopping Trips The shopping trips are generally provided on a fortnightly basis, and usually incorporate a pub lunch on the way. These trips help to promote independence among our members by enabling them to do their own meal planning and shopping. We vary the shopping centres and lunch destinations so that the trips also have a social component. The driver is available to help take the shopping back into their homes and will arrange for an assisted shopping service for anyone with mobility problems. Outings The outings are generally organised on the alternate week to the shopping trips. Although we usually include some old favourites, we try to introduce some new destinations every season. The schedule is varied, including sea side trips in the summer, lots of garden centres with tea rooms and theatre and pantomime trips during the winter. Our members have quite specific needs, including accessible toilets, level pathways etc. and it is always a challenge to find new venues that are appropriate. The trips are very popular and early booking is recommended.

Computer Classes Thursdays 2.00pm – 4.00pm We are very grateful to our volunteer IT coach who teaches our members whatever it is that they want to learn from the basics of switching on a laptop, online shopping and banking, social networking with family and friends to uploading photos. Hearing Aid Service In partnership with Crawley and East Surrey Hospital Audiology Department, we are an authorised supplier of National Health hearing aid batteries. The Sight for Surrey Hearing Bus also comes to the centre every 12 weeks to provide a hearing aid maintenance service so that members can access trained staff able to deal with any problems they may have with their hearing aids or consumables. Hearing aid batteries are available from the centre during normal opening hours. Volunteer Listening Service We have a day centre volunteer who trained to provide support in the form of listening to any member who may be going through trauma, bereavement, ill health or any issue that they would like some support with. To have somebody that can listen to your worries within a safe environment is crucial to maintaining good mental health and ensuring emotional stability. Although this service is only available by appointment, there is not a long waiting time, unlike formal counselling services which can take several months to organise. Chiropody service We have a visiting chiropodist, Michelle, who holds a regular clinic at the day centre. This service is widely used by our members and is available to non-members. Michelle will also attend home visits on request. Beautician Service We have a visiting beautician who can provide a range of services, including hairdressing, to our members either at the centre, or in their own homes. A list of available services and cost is available from the office.
