Welcome To

Fiveways Day Centre, 2-4 Caird Avenue, Dundee DD3 8AW Tel: 01382-825624 Email: info@dundeeageconcern.com www.dundeeageconcern.com Opening times: 10.00am to 03.30pm Our Charity was founded in 1947 as Dundee Older People’s Welfare Liaison Committee provided the catalyst to allow many of the cities Churches develop their own lunch clubs centred around caring for the elderly. Our charity finally established itself as a full-time lunch club at its current location in the ‘Fiveways’ centre in 1959. The centre has gone through several transformations over the years up to its current guise as a day service in a purpose built, two story facility with capacity to support up to 40 clients at any one time.

A local charity operating in Dundee since 1947

About us Why do we do it? We care, we care about the elderly and socially isolated across Dundee; we deal in happiness, we provide a sense of purpose and belonging, of safety, dignity and respect to everyone who uses our service. Dundee Age Concern is a small independent not for profit charity and our staff team represent our values and purpose to meet the needs of the elderly residents across Dundee. At present we have over 600 visits per month to the ‘Fiveways’ centre. We offer a service to people from the age of 55 to 100 dependent on support needs; a lot of our clients are living with dementia, cancer, arthritis and or difficulties with mobility. All of the aforementioned can begin to lead to social isolation amongst the elderly, which has an effect on the individual’s willingness to eat properly and so begins a downward spiral in health and well-being. Our centre allows the opportunity to meet new friends, maintain social relationships and just as important it affords much needed respite to family and carers.

We have a resident chef and small, but industrious, kitchen which produces a nourishing three course lunch for all our clients. We find that our clients are more inclined to eat in a social setting with friends and as such we are able to ensure they are receiving at least one nutritious, filling, hot meal during the day. This also affords staff members the opportunity to monitor any changes in eating habits or cognitive slips, which may be an indication of other underlying health conditions. We record this information on our client care files and share this with family and carers to allow early medical intervention should it be required.

Our services Although we are not a ‘care service’ we are registered with the Care Inspectorate, OSCR and the SSSC to provide assurance, compliance and transparency for our Charity. At the centre we provide numerous activities to cater for all abilities and interests. There are table-top activities such as arts and crafts, dominos, draughts, crosswords, puzzles, knitting, crocheting etc. We have music and dancing, carpet bowls, Boccia and chair aerobics for those that are a bit more energetic. The clients also enjoy a movie afternoon complete with popcorn and hot dogs. During the summer months we encourage the clients to spend time in the lovely garden areas. Staff like to get the clients involved in planting the garden for the coming year. There are various flowers, strawberry shrubs and tomatoes for the greenhouse and for those that are unable to manage this, staff will bring pots, seeds and compost to the table to allow clients to get involved with their garden. Out with the centre we arrange client outings to local areas of interest, a nice lunch with each other in a different setting and at Christmas they love a trip to the pantomime and a good party. To support our clients to maintain their independence for as long as possible, we have engaged with the Care Inspectorate led Care About Physical Activity programme. This encourages our elderly to remain as active as possible through small changes to routines in the centre. This encourages movement and to step away from a risk averse environment where we end up taking away their independence through kindness.

Activities and 70+ years providing a service Dundee Age Concern were presented with a very special award at a reception in the Scottish Parliament on 2nd of October to celebrate 75 years of national and local people’s groups and organisations in Scotland. The award was given to only 4 organisations who Age Scotland had selected as outstanding older people’s organisations. Well done all who are or have been part of the great service provided by Dundee Age Concern over the 70 plus years of the organisation.

Staff and volunteers Our team is made up of a mixture of 11 part time paid staff, 1 sessional worker and 12 brilliant volunteers. With a collective effort, the team at the ‘Fiveways centre’ strive to do their utmost to ensure our elderly are given as much opportunity as possible to live a full and rewarding life in their twilight years.
