SAFEGUARD YOURSELF AGAINST TROUBLES AHEAD BY ACTING NOW YOUR WILL:

It is essential that you have an up to date Will in place, that way your estate will go to the people you want to leave everything to when you die. Without a Will and depending on the size of your estate, the Government may get everything.

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPA):

We consider this absolutely essential for everyone. There are 2 types of LPA: Property & Financial Affairs LPA and Health & Welfare LPA. ~ If you have a bad accident or an illness that makes you incapacitated for a long or short period of time you need to appoint someone (your Attorney) that you trust to manage your affairs until you recover. This may be anyone you trust such as your spouse or partner, siblings, children etc. Just like insurance if you have a registered LPA in place then you are protected, but without one then the Court may appoint a Solicitor to manage your affairs at Solicitors prices plus vat. ~ If you should lose mental capacity then unless you have a registered LPA in place someone will have to apply to the Court to become your deputy in order to act for you This can cost from £2000.00 to £3000.00 plus vat. However, if the Court does not find the proposed applicant suitable then they may appoint a Deputy for you and this is likely to be a local Solicitor who will charge Solicitor’s rates for all work they do plus vat. ~ CALL US NOW TO GET ADVICE AND LET US DRAFT YOUR LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY AT A SPECIAL PRICE FOR AGE CONCERN SUPPORTERS ~

ESTATE ADMINISTRATION AND PROBATE:

When a loved one dies it is always a very distressing and emotional time for all the family. The Executors have to complete the numerous and complex forms and send them to the Probate Registry to request a Grant in order for the Estate to be wound up. If there is Inheritance Tax to pay this will need to be paid before the Grant will be allowed. This may pose a problem for your Executors if they do not have the money to pay the tax in order to get the Grant. An Executor is personally responsible for any errors or omissions that may arise - even after the estate has been distributed. At LCS we are proud that we can offer a better service and a more competitive cost than most Solicitors or Banks.

DIGNITY GUARANTEED FUNERAL PLANS:

Dignity are a leading nationwide Funeral Plan provider and offer a choice of Plans to the over 50’s. To ensure that you get the funeral that you want including all hymns, readings and music, you must have a funeral plan. This also fixes the cost at today’s price and takes the financial burden away from your family. Payments can be made in full or by instalments up to 25 years providing they are fully paid by the 85th Birthday of the eldest person named on the Plan. ~ CALL US NOW TO GET ADVICE AND BUY YOUR CHOSEN FULLY PAID FUNERAL PLAN AT A SPECIAL PRICE WITH £200.00 CASH BACK FOR AGE CONCERN SUPPORTERS ~

ASSET PROTECTION TRUSTS (APT):

An Asset Protection Trust (APT) generally protects the assets against the lengthy and costly process of Probate, safeguards inheritance where beneficiaries suffer relationship breakdown or insolvency in the future. It also protects the assets against claims from disinherited family members. The APT also offers numerous other benefits that could be applicable to you your family and your bloodline. You can place just your home into an APT or a combination of property and investments subject to certain criteria. ~ CALL US NOW TO GET ADVICE AND LET US DRAFT YOUR ASSET PROTECTION TRUST AT A SPECIAL PRICE FOR AGE CONCERN SUPPORTERS ~

HOME SAFEGUARD

Supporting generations of families to live independently Want to feel safe and secure at home? Need to know you can get help in an emergency? East Devon’s Home Safeguard personal alarm service can help you do this. Enabling people to remain independent and safe in their own home is important. In East Devon, people are able to stay in their homes longer, thanks to the telecare alarm service, Home Safeguard. The service, which is run by East Devon District Council, allows users to live independently – safe in the knowledge that help will reach them quickly if needed – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. SUPPORTING GENERATIONS Service user, Charles says that Home Safeguard has enabled both himself and his mother to live independently. “As I sit here typing this I am looking at a small bright red button strapped to my left wrist. I’m always glad to see it there because it gives me the assurance that, though I live on my own and have a variety of medical conditions, (not least old age) and a tendency to fall, I am never more than a button press away from help. We first obtained our Home Safeguard alarm system when my mother, who lived with me, became increasingly frail, with bad knees and the first signs of dementia. It was wonderful for me to be able to go out shopping and to appointments knowing that my mum could call for help if she ran into any difficulty. I gave keys to the house to trusted friends, and the company was able to ring any of these to check up on us if the alarm went off. After my mother moved into a care home I was delighted to take over her button and continue to use the system. Every month I raise the alarm to check that all is in order, and after a few preliminary beeps I hear a friendly voice addressing me by name and enquiring if I am alright. Once in a while someone from Home Safeguard will visit just to check that everything is in order, and to see if any adjustments need to be made. Correct at time of production

I have not yet, in five years, had to use the system in an emergency, but I would not be without it for the world. The time to get it all installed was before I ‘needed’ it. I had visions of lying on the floor with a broken bone thinking “I wish I had a personal alarm system”. The decision to get the system installed was so obvious then! I belong to a number of groups locally, and I am out every morning at one or another. It’s fun to find out who else has a button, and there are many. It’s almost like being a member of a club with a common interest, and I do not know a single person who regrets belonging. Perhaps it is not too strong to say that having an alarm system takes the fear out of living alone.” NOT JUST FOR OLDER PEOPLE Home Safeguard is not just for older people but for anyone who may be vulnerable because of their specific needs such as younger people with learning disabilities. In addition to the pendant alarm service, Home Safeguard offers a range of sensors that can assist people with all aspects of their life – for example, a pill dispenser that dispenses medication as and when it needs to be taken or a temperature sensor that can monitor if the property becomes too cold. Monitoring of such equipment can help health professionals monitor ongoing health conditions. TRUSTED SERVICE AT A LOW COST Home Safeguard has been running for over 32 years. For under £5 per week our personal alarm service gives reassurance that help can reach you, or a loved one, quickly when needed. To find out more call 01395 578237, email homesafeguard@eastdevon.gov.uk or visit eastdevon.gov.uk/homesafeguard 

Small really is beautiful in dementia care Devon is blessed with many excellent care homes and while the trend over the past years has been for larger care homes, Rose Lodge has taken the opposite view

R

ose Lodge provides two small communities (about 16 people in each) for people living with dementia, and there are several very good reasons for this. It can be quite distressing for people with early dementia to be with people at the later stages and we have found that in general people with dementia are happiest when they are in a community with other people at a similar stage. Smaller communities reduce the number of relationships that residents have to navigate, and they just feel more homely. Also the needs of people with early dementia are quite distinct from those of people with the later

stages of dementia. By having separate communities Rose Lodge are able to customise the design of the communal spaces and bedrooms, the care, and the activity programmes to those specific needs. So while people in the Cottage (their community for people with early dementia) enjoy activities such as going for long walks, or regular skittle competitions at a local social club, the people in the Lodge (their community for people with later stages of dementia) generally enjoy more gentle and sensory activities such as live music, gentle exercise, and pampering sessions in their salon. The decor of the two communities follow an identical style and this eases the

transition in case of people moving on from the Cottage to the Lodge. Does it work ? Well the residents and their relatives certainly think so. This year they voted Rose Lodge into the top 20 small care home groups in the UK at carehome.co.uk which is the UK’s leading independent care home advisor. This award has come on top of their CQC Outstanding rating and a Gold award from Stirling University for dementia design.

Local, Convenient and Family-Friendly Conveniently located just off The Strand with disabled access and an hour’s free parking outside, we’re very easy to get to. We love getting to know all the family, from grandparents to grandchildren, and we hope you’ll choose us to look after your family’s vision.

We believe that the most important part of your visit to us is assessing the health of your eyes – after all, a fancy pair of spectacles is little use if the eyes themselves aren’t in good shape. As such, when you come to McAusland Optometrists you are guaranteed a thorough eye examination – which may be NHS-funded, for those that are eligible. We pride ourselves on keeping up with the latest advances in technology to make sure that we can offer our patients the best possible eye care. This goes hand-in-hand with our reassuringly thorough approach to eye examinations – meaning you never feel rushed and there’s always time to ask us questions.

We personally select the frames, lenses and contact lenses that we feel are best for our clients and, as such, we are confident that we can always help you find a product that’s wellsuited to your personal requirements. We typically allocate a 40 minute appointment for your eye examination, allowing us plenty of time to answer any questions you may have and making sure that you never feel rushed. You will be given advice about the condition of your eyes – including any measures you can take to preserve the quality of your vision – and recommendations around vision correction options (such as glasses or contact lenses) that are appropriate for your lifestyle.

............................................................................................................................

Our Home Support Assistants act with honesty and integrity and have respect for you and your home.

The needs of you and your cared for person will be fully and carefully assessed by our Home Support team

The Home Support Sitting service provides a ‘temporary’ respite service for you and your cared for person to take a break at a time of need.

All Home Support Assistants whether Domestic or sitting are CRB checked.

There is an hourly service charge with a minimum of one hour. The service provides a ‘temporary’ respite facility for you and your cared for person which means companionship and support in times of temporary need. For example: Ad-hoc occasions, holiday or sickness periods, perhaps a ‘one-off’ special occasion or when a close relative or partner is unable to carry on care due to a temporary need to withdraw. The service is a ‘companionship’ service which does not include ‘personal’ or ‘nursing’ care but moreover someone in attendance to provide ‘reassurance’ in the absence of the usual carer The service is not designed to provide long-term or permanent sitting or replace your usual arrangements. If the period of cover is in excess of three months we recommend you seek further information and advice from other professional bodies such as your local Social Services

Ring 01395 275408 and ask for The Home Support Manager who will discuss with you your specific needs. Befriending and Social Interaction We provide a unique befriending service at Age Concern Exmouth. It is based on a ‘menu’ system whereby the service user interacts at their chosen level, choosing what they want from their local Age Concern. Its an interactive service, based on enabling people to be better motivated and more enthused about living their lives as they want to. It relies on the service user taking an active part in what we have to offer. Basically we offer a ‘Brokerage’ service for older people to discuss with one of our trained staff (via an assessment session - in our centre or in your own home) your needs, your wants, your wishes etc resulting in a simple support ‘plan’ of action tailored to you. This will then be yours to choose to action or not. If you choose to do nothing, then that will be your choice, however, if you choose to ‘action’ the plan then we will put in place a series of support initiatives to help you.

Funding As an independent provider of services and a local registered Charity we have no Head Office or Government funding. We rely on very limited income from the services we provide. We accept donations of all sizes. Every bit is valued by our staff, volunteers and service users alike. If you do write a cheque please ensure it is payable to “Age Concern Exmouth”

Volunteer: If you are interested in donating some of your spare time then we’d like to hear from you about your skills and experience. Together we can look at how you can help support older people in the Exmouth area. Volunteering is a commitment, but not as arduous as you might think. Many of our Volunteer requirements are designed with the busy Volunteer in mind to the extent that we endeavour to design most of our services so that Volunteers can ‘dip-in-and-out’ as and when it suits their lifestyle.

If you want to leave a Legacy and wish to discuss its use, then please do contact our Chief officer who will be only too pleased to carry out your wishes for you. Trustee Board In case you did not know. Our Charity is a completely stand-alone independent charity. It is managed on a day to day basis by the Chief Executive Officer (Steve Dace) and is governed by an eight strong board of Trustees who meet on a regular basis to ensure there is a business strategy in place coupled to a firm governance programme.
