Our aims are to enable older people to: • Plan for the future, encouraging them to take a positive attitude and approach to growing older. • Prevent problems, but when they do occur, minimise the effect on their quality of life • Find and use local services and take part in social activities and volunteering

The Guide to Services shows the variety of support we offer - both free and chargeable services

• Take part in more social, cultural, exercise and leisure activities to help promote health and fitness • Be more independent, being and feeling safer inside and outside their homes • Take an active role in ensuring services are developed with older people in mind Diversity/Equal Opportunities Statement

With the support of 188 Active volunteers who each week give a total of over 788 hours of community service, assist over 1160 individuals

We are committed to the principles and practice of equality and diversity. We work to promote diversity among our clients, staff and volunteer team. Confidentiality Statement To protect the confidentiality of our clients, all names have been changed in quotations and pen pictures.

Although we would like to thank all of the sponsors within this folder for their support, neither the six charities involved or Excell Media can recommend or endorse any services or products that they may supply.

for under £5 a week Roger stays on track Want to feel safe and secure at home? Need to know you can get help in an emergency? East Devon’s Home Safeguard personal alarm service can help you do this. Enabling people to remain independent and safe in their own home is important. In East Devon, people are able to stay in their homes longer, thanks to the telecare alarm service, Home Safeguard. The service, which is run by East Devon District Council, allows users to live independently – safe in the knowledge that help will reach them quickly if needed – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A lifeline Model railway enthusiast, Roger (pictured) says that Home Safeguard has thrown him the lifeline he needed. “I signed up to Home Safeguard about a year ago and haven’t looked back. It’s allowed me and my wife to stay in our own home and continue with day-to-day activities that we all take for granted and I’m still able to indulge in my passion for model railways. However, we have the added assurance that if anything does happen to us, such as a fall, we can get help at the touch of a button.” The alarm service is easy to install and use – all that’s needed is a telephone line and plug socket. Home Safeguard provides a base unit with a pendant, clip-on or a wristband, which is worn by the user. Then, if the user needs help all they have to do is press the button on the personal alarm or base unit. When the alarm is pressed a call is made to the monitoring centre. A trained operator will answer within seconds to find out what help is needed. If necessary, they will call someone to help or one of the emergency services. The operator will keep in contact with the caller until help comes. “A Home Safeguard operator rings us on a daily basis Correct at time of production

to make sure we’re OK. I wear my alarm on my wrist and if ever I need help I just press the button,” added Roger. Jill Elson, portfolio holder for sustainable homes and communities, said: ‘Home Safeguard gives peace of mind to those living by themselves and can give reassurance to relatives of loved ones living alone. “It also assists us in keeping people in their own homes as opposed to hospital or residential settings, which is doubtless the preference of most residents.” not just foR oldeR people Home Safeguard is not just for older people but for anyone who may be vulnerable because of their specific needs such as younger people with learning disabilities. In addition to the pendant alarm service, Home Safeguard offers a range of sensors that can assist people with all aspects of their life – for example, a pill dispenser that dispenses medication as and when it needs to be taken or a temperature sensor that can monitor if the property becomes too cold. Monitoring of such equipment can help health professionals monitor ongoing health conditions. AccRedited seRvice At A low cost Home Safeguard has been running for over 25 years and is accredited by the Telecare Services Authority. For as little as £4.44 per week (including VAT) our personal alarm service gives reassurance that help can reach you, or a loved one, quickly when needed. Our Home Support Assistants act with honesty and integrity and have respect for you and your home.

The needs of you and your cared for person will be fully and carefully assessed by our Home Support team

The Home Support Sitting service provides a ‘temporary’ respite service for you and your cared for person to take a break at a time of need.

All Home Support Assistants whether Domestic or sitting are CRB checked.

There is an hourly service charge with a minimum of one hour. The service provides a ‘temporary’ respite facility for you and your cared for person which means companionship and support in times of temporary need. For example: Ad-hoc occasions, holiday or sickness periods, perhaps a ‘one-off’ special occasion or when a close relative or partner is unable to carry on care due to a temporary need to withdraw. The service is a ‘companionship’ service which does not include ‘personal’ or ‘nursing’ care but moreover someone in attendance to provide ‘reassurance’ in the absence of the usual carer The service is not designed to provide long-term or permanent sitting or replace your usual arrangements. If the period of cover is in excess of three months we recommend you seek further information and advice from other professional bodies such as your local Social Services

Ring 01395 275408 and ask for The Home Support Manager who will discuss with you your specific needs. Befriending and Social Interaction We provide a unique befriending service at Age Concern Exmouth. It is based on a ‘menu’ system whereby the service user interacts at their chosen level, choosing what they want from their local Age Concern. Its an interactive service, based on enabling people to be better motivated and more enthused about living their lives as they want to. It relies on the service user taking an active part in what we have to offer. Basically we offer a ‘Brokerage’ service for older people to discuss with one of our trained staff (via an assessment session - in our centre or in your own home) your needs, your wants, your wishes etc resulting in a simple support ‘plan’ of action tailored to you. This will then be yours to choose to action or not. If you choose to do nothing, then that will be your choice, however, if you choose to ‘action’ the plan then we will put in place a series of support initiatives to help you.

And finally …

Why not give us a call?

How can you interact with your local Age Concern here in Exmouth?

Funding As an independent provider of services and a local registered Charity we have no Head Office or Government funding. We rely on very limited income from the services we provide. We accept donations of all sizes. Every bit is valued by our staff, volunteers and service users alike. If you do write a cheque please ensure it is payable to “Age Concern Exmouth”

Volunteer: If you are interested in donating some of your spare time then we’d like to hear from you about your skills and experience. Together we can look at how you can help support older people in the Exmouth area. Volunteering is a commitment, but not as arduous as you might think. Many of our Volunteer requirements are designed with the busy Volunteer in mind to the extent that we endeavour to design most of our services so that Volunteers can ‘dip-in-and-out’ as and when it suits their lifestyle.

If you want to leave a Legacy and wish to discuss its use, then please do contact our Chief officer who will be only too pleased to carry out your wishes for you. Trustee Board In case you did not know. Our Charity is a completely stand-alone independent charity. It is managed on a day to day basis by the Chief Executive Officer (Steve Dace) and is governed by an eight strong board of Trustees who meet on a regular basis to ensure there is a business strategy in place coupled to a firm governance programme.
