Until the pandemic, most of us probably didn’t think twice about the “supply chain ” We went to the store (or went online) and bought what was on our list, whether it was a staple like food or a sundry like that sparkly something or other just because.
However, as supply chains broke, it suddenly became clear just how complex even the most everyday item really is and how many individual pieces and parts, actions and transactions are required to get that meal on the table, bike on the road or toy into the hands of a child
It got us thinking about the complex act of gift-giving (and receiving). Aside from the supply of the actual item, there’s a whole string of events, a “gift chain” if you will, related to giving someone a present that is so rich and rewarding.
Whether it’s a present for a friend, colleague or family member, a tiny surprise or a big ticket item, it always involves a first step: thinking of the recipient What do they like? What would bring them joy? Maybe it’s a practical gift like a new sweater (winter is coming!) or a riveting book for the reader in your life.
Then, once you buy it, how to give it? Do you wrap it, ship it or present it in person? The anticipation of giving it is half the fun! Picture their delight. Will they laugh, smile or perhaps beam with joy? What about the future of that gift? Every time that cozy sweater is worn, guess who will come to mind?
The act of giving is a gift in and of itself!
And this guide is our team’s gift to you. We’re grateful for your continued support and look forward to working together in 2023. All the best to you and yours!

While you’re making your lists (and checking them twice), you may be wondering how to support your community this time of year Here are a few ways you can make a difference, and help local charities and nonprofits, during the giving season (their busiest time of the year!):
For the planet: Host a community park cleanup with your friends and family
Tip: See if your city offers resources like gloves and bags to help you keep public places in your neighbourhood clean and safe for everyone.
For a cause close to your heart: Raise funds for a cause that matters to you by hosting an online fundraiser
Tip: Set up your fundraiser on Facebook or see if your charity of choice has resources for community fundraisers
For those in need: Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or host a food drive at your holiday party
Tip: Most local food banks have a list of their most needed items (usually includes non perishables like canned veggies, pasta sauce, baby food and peanut butter)
For community wellbeing: Donate blood or host a blood drive with your community
For those in need of a friend: Have a letter writing party (or make it a solo activity) and write thoughtful holiday cards for seniors living in care homes who may be facing a lonely holiday.
Tip: Reach out to your local retirement home and see if there are any gifts you can include with your cards (think puzzles, board games and used books)
A win-win: This holiday season, purchase gifts from a charity or nonprofit Tip: Many charities and nonprofits have online stores featuring virtual and physical gifts, with 100% of the proceeds going to the cause Includes warm fuzzies and maximum impact
Show you care: Donate in someone’s honour to a cause they care about Tip: December 31st is the last day to give and get a receipt for the 2022 tax year.
Spread the holiday cheer to furry friends: Donate a care package to your local animal shelter
Tip: Old bedding, gently used products like leashes and toys, and food are always in demand
Get crafty for kids: Make handmade gifts to support your local children’s hospital
Tip: Think fun and comfort with items like hats and mitts, toys and snuggly blankets
