Prime Minister Tony Abbott could face another leadership spill mid-year if he doesn’t act on concerns from his backbench according to Federal Member for Canning Don Randall. Mr Randall seconded a spill motion against Mr Abbott, which was defeated on Monday with party members voting 61-39 against. A fire caused more than $1.5 million at a Canning Vale equipment hire business last week. The fire was reported about 2.30am on February 6 at Access Group Australia’s Catalano Road premises. About 40 firefighters attended before getting the fire under control about 3.30am. They stayed until 5am to monitor the scene. A department of fire and emergency services spokesman said the damage was mainly structural and was believed to be worth between $1.5 and $2 million. Access Group general manager Tom Fraser said the company had crisis management plans in place and business had since resumed. He said the fire damaged the rear part of the building but not the equipment.
“When you consider the effect of remaining boundary adjustments, orphan suburbs, questions around the proposed City of Perth Act and the fact some councils will actually reduce in size, this process is clearly no longer delivering on its objectives.” Minister for Local Government Tony Simpson would not confirm if local government reform would no longer go ahead across the metropolitan area but said it would be hard to develop a better system through economies of scale if three local governments were left behind. He said the issue would be addressed in the party room this week. It was expected that local government reform would be abandoned. The government has had to abandon or significantly modify several key budget measures including Mr Abbott’s signature paid parental leave scheme. Mr Randall said an unpopular prime minister could also jeopardise individual seats, even those considered safe. He said he had no regrets about seconding the motion and had received overwhelming support from his electorate following the motion. “I have no regrets whatsoever because as they say sometimes fortune favours the bold,” he said. “It wasn’t necessarily a popular decision amongst the majority of my colleagues but perhaps begrudgingly they realised it had to be done.”

REFORM UPDATE Since the formal announcement of boundary changes affecting the City of Canning were announced late last year, the City has been working with neighbouring Local Governments through Local Implementation Committees (LICs) and Working Groups, to plan for the future in line with the Government’s 1 July 2015 deadline. The City of Canning has been working intensively to prepare a methodology and supporting detailed information for the equitable distribution of Canning’s assets, liabilities, and workforce. The methodology utilises the City of Canning’s current budget and service levels, and is premised on the sustainable serviceability and uninterrupted continuation of services, and availability of facilities, for each of the four revised boundary zones as they transition into the neighbouring local authority districts. The benchmark distribution and allocation model that has been developed applies this methodology with a view to achieving a fair and equitable outcome for all members of the City of Canning as a whole, as well as its valued workforce. It is respectful of the guidelines provided by the State Government as part of its local government reform agenda through its Metropolitan Reform Implementation Committee (MetRIC) Guidelines. The integrity and fairness of the model and its methodology is being reviewed by consultants Deloitte who have been engaged by the City of Canning to assist. Canning’s proposed model and methodology has been initially shared for feedback purposes with the Chief Executive Officers of the four neighbouring Councils on Friday 6 February. It will also be the subject of discussions at a LIC meeting with the City of Gosnells on Wednesday 11 February, a meeting with senior officers of the Department of Local Government and Communities on Friday 13 February, and further LIC meetings with other surrounding Councils. Once this initial feedback is received, it is the intention of the City of Canning to share key details of the model and the methodology at its February Council meeting, as well as more broadly with the community of Canning, including through posting on the City’s website. The City and its officers will be constructively working with neighbouring Councils and their officers over the coming weeks in February and March to discuss the detail of arrangements and to identify and address any issues that may arise in the implementation phase. It is working towards reaching an accord with all four adjoining Councils by the end of March 2015, so that proposals can be more formally addressed with public accountability through future meetings and resolutions of the Council of the City of Canning. Key issues including arrangements concerning the City’s Waste Services and the City’s extensive Aged and Care Services will be high on the agenda as the LIC processes continue. The City is mindful of the importance of these services and facilities to significant sections of the Canning community. As previously promised, the City is committed to ensuring its community is kept informed on the progress of Reform, and will utilise this space, our website and our e-newsletter to communicate important information to our community on an ongoing basis. Call for witnesses to man hit by car A 74-year-old East Victoria Park man died in hospital at the weekend, five days after he was struck by a car while crossing the road. About 6.45pm on February 2 a black Hyundai Getz hatchback was
travelling in a south westerly direction on Shepparton Road, Victoria Park near the Great Eastern Highway flyover when it collided with the man. The man died in hospital on February 7.
Major crash investigators wanted to speak with anyone who saw the Hyundai Getz or the pedestrian prior to the crash. Anyone with information was asked to all crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Rat trackers help species World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was asking the public to help gather information on the rakali or native Australian water rat to help protect the species. Little is known of the distribution of rakali in southern Western Australia except their range has declined in the Wheatbelt. WWF and the Department of Parks and Wildlife were asking the public to take part in a citizen science project by reporting sightings at rivers, lakes or wetlands. WWF spokesperson Sabrina Trocini said rakali were often mistaken for black rats, platypus and even otters. “Rakali are secretive and hard to see but their presence can often be detected by footprints or tail drag marks in mud or sand,” she said. “The presence of feeding middens can also be a good indicator of their presence. “These are dense scatterings of shell pieces left behind after their meals of crabs, crayfish or mussels.” Rakali are larger than introduced black rats, have partially webbed feet and can be distinguished by their broad, heavily whiskered noses and the white tip on their long, thick tails. Their water-repellent fur is dark grey to black on their backs, with paler bellies.

New city theatre will entertain audiences this valentine’s day weekend with an oldstyle variety show production. Old time music hall is a step back in time with performers providing fun and laughter over dinner. New city theatre’s Linda Roads said there were 10 actors in the show, all local to the area. “There’s lots of skits and singing, and the audience will laugh and sing-along all night, they’ll have a great time,” she said. “Sadly the younger generation is unfamiliar with music hall shows but one of our youngest performers is 12 years old, and she’s amazing. “Music hall is a variety show with bits and pieces from broadway shows, songs and the like, audiences have lots of fun.” Twelve-year-old Ebony Uetake from Lesmurdie has been performing since the age of three and said she was thrilled to be the youngest performer old time music hall. “It’s wonderful because I can learn from people who have so much more experience than me,” she said. “It was my first real big audition and even though I was excited, I was very nervous.” Ebony’s mother Simone said she was proud of her daughter and looked forward to opening night. “I think it’s great for her to get a range of experiences in something she loves doing,” she said. “Old time music hall will be a really exciting show for everyone.” Tickets to the performance cost $25 and include dinner. Max Pellicano is looking forward to his biannual trip to Perth for his king in concert tour in honour of Elvis Presley. Speaking from Michigan, Detroit last week and after 30-centimetre snowfalls, Mr Pellicano, known as Elvis to the Max, said he was looking forward to swapping the cold for Perth’s high-30 temperatures. “Fan loyalty in Perth is fantastic and I have an awful lot of friends there, it’s a good place,” he said. Mr Pellicano’s tour will take him across the country throughout February, arriving in WA in March for his popular stage production. He sees himself not so much as an impersonator but an accomplished actor. “I try to really zero in on his personality rather than as an impersonator where you just copy mannerisms,” he said. Mr Pellicano discovered an early talent and passion for singing like Elvis. “Burning Love was the first Elvis song I did when I was in a rock band in California on the hotel circuit,” he said. “It was on the charts and we were getting requests for it every single night so someone said ‘why don’t you put on a costume and start doing some of this stuff’ and it just snowballed from there, I couldn’t get away from it.” So popular is the show and so
meticulous is Mr Pellecano’s act that he even enlisted Elvis’ tailor to make his costumes including the $10,000 white eagle costume from 1972. While Mr Pellecano has no plans to play any other performers if he did he thinks John Lennon from the Beatles would be the one. “Elvis was the greatest entertainer, single artist of all time, there is no question about it,” he said. “He was an icon, even greater than Michael Jackson, as great as he was. “You can’t really say Elvis was better than the Beatles, the Beatles were the best group of all time, it was a different time, he was the first big pop star so you can’t compare them.” He will appear at the Regal theatre on March 13, bookings on 9388 2066 or Ticketek at 132 849 and www.ticketek.com.au.

Democracy wins
Government listened to us
It is time for all councils to stop the nonsense of the state government’s so-called local government reform. They should demand that the ratepayers of each area have the opportunity to vote on their council. It is called democracy and enough is enough. Reading the results of the polls declared on Saturday evening we can see why Barnett and Simpson did not allow all residents in the metropolitan area to vote. You boys have missed your calling. When you do not attain victory at the next state election you can go on tour with the psychic fair. Margaret Adams Ferndale
I am very pleased that people with disability and mobility issues now have better access to the Perth arena. I spoke out on behalf of individuals, families, carers and seniors and the disability sector at a function attended by the premier and ministers in August 2014. I also advised the then Minister for Sport and Recreation Terry Waldron. I told them the Perth arena needed changes to better engage the disability community and make it overall safe for all patrons. In particular I mentioned the wheelchair accessible areas throughout the arena did not have safeguard protection, railing or wheelchair locks and that people using the wheelchairs could easily roll into the back row seats. Other patrons were also using the wheelchair areas to store materials at the feet of disability patrons. I also questioned the way patrons had to wait for lift access before and after events when the lifts would go to corporate levels and the carpark. I was delighted when I went to the Perth arena for the Hopman cup that I had been listened to as the wheelchair areas had railings and safeguards to stop other patrons using the area. Also there were signs on the lifts to say lifts were for use by mobility impaired patrons 10 minutes prior to and after events. Burden to fall on P&C I am writing in response to your January 14 article regarding the schools that missed out on the chaplaincy funding. Carson Street school caters for children with special needs in East Victoria Park. We were originally funded by the federal government’s chaplaincy program but unfortunately missed out on the state’s funding. Like other schools we have to battle absenteeism, children coming to school inappropriately dressed for the weather and not having any food for the day. A large proportion of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and many are culturally and linguistically diverse. All of our children have disabilities with a lot also having complex medical conditions. Our children are some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in the community and they are being neglected by the state government. I also believe that the funding for the additional 71 schools came from money that had been ear marked for special needs schools. It is now going to fall to the P&C to assist with a lot of these issues. We do not have the funds to do this. As we feel so strongly about the need for a chaplain in our school we are going to have to look at ways we can raise funds through the community. Liz Green Carson Street school P&C president

Never lose sight of the fun aspect by Robyn Molloy Perth Scorchers’ Brad Hogg was back in Perth last week playing for Willetton district cricket club after the Scorchers’ thrilling last ball win in the T20 big bash against the Sydney Sixes the week before. He reflects with Robyn Molloy on the win and what it means to play cricket.

he big bash final could not have ended in a more nail biting way with Brett Lee set for a hat trick off the last ball but the Scorchers snuck through for the winning run. Brad Hogg, who turned 44 last week, was sent from the bench to watch from the change rooms but recalled the excitement. “The only thing is with the last ball I got sent back into the change rooms because I am not allowed to sit on the bench while we are batting because I talk too much,” he said. “It was an amazing experience with it going down to the wire and Brett Lee in his final game and it would have been a fairytale for him to have gotten a hat trick on the final ball. “Winning it for the first time is an unbelievable feeling and to win it back to back is extra special, especially with us having a huge change in personnel. “I think we have had six or seven different players this particular year so the mood was just the same as last year because for some guys it was their first opportunity which is great.” Hogg said it was great to see WA cricket come out of the dol-
drums with back to back wins in the T20, making the final of the Sheffield shield last season and taking out the Matador cup this year. He also said he tried to play as much as possible for his home club of Willetton but it depended on his cricket commitments. He said it was important to keep players interested at a grass roots level. “I think now we just need to look at what the market wants and to me you want juniors to play the game and you want them to have fun,” he said. Hogg said the sport of cricket was a great way to keep youth occupied as it was a social sport as well as competitive – he would know, he’s been playing in the top grades and for Australia for more than 20 years. “I was playing with two kids in the backyard once and the mother was going ‘cricket goes for too long’ and I said well what better sport to get your kids involved in?” he said. “They get to their teenage years and at least you know they are going to be down the park all day and not in the shopping centre.” Hogg, who has forged a career
up to the international level, said for him the game was still important because of its social side. “We had a meeting a couple of years ago when I got back into the Australian team and it was stated a number of times from the top that we are paid to win and all this was drilled into us a number of times but I just sat there and thought no, that’s not why I play cricket,” he said. “I play cricket because I want to be the best I possibly can but at the end of the day we are a sport and we come under the category of entertainment and I just go back to the West Indies when they were dominating Australia. “I didn’t want to play cricket because Australia was winning, my goal was to play cricket for Australia and beat the West Indies. “So I play the game because I saw the characters in the game back then enjoying it both on and off the field. “I am a bit of a mixture, I love playing but I also love the social aspects.” Hogg said life had changed since he played sport as a child and people found fitting sports into their lives more difficult. “It is something in our society that has gone adrift,” he said. “We have lost that social aspect of sport. “We think we have got so much on, even I sit down and think geez we waste so much time that we could be utilising better. “You have got your kids playing

in the morning but mum and dad aren’t playing the sport like I remember. “I remember we had the kids sport in the morning and then in the afternoon we were just playing on the banks while mum and dad played their sport. “I look at the Willetton community centre and we’ve got cricket, soccer, football, basketball, bowls, tennis and such a great arena and fantastic clubhouse but I don’t think we utilise that well as a community. “It should be a centrepoint there for everyone.” Hogg, who lives in the area, was
hoping for a call to commentate the world cup this weekend.

Club president Sean Harrison said the club was self-funding the new clubrooms and hoped the concert was a success.
