Course Information
Prerequisite: None
Catalog Description: This course includes material on general orientation to college; general institutional information; academic skills and class preparation; as well as life management needed to be successful as a college student.
Course Outcomes:
1. Assess their current strengths and areas for growth.
2. Demonstrate an increased awareness of their beliefs, choices, and behaviors.
3. Locate college resources, including staff and support programs.
4. Take more effective notes.
5. Implement strategies for taking tests.
6. Use techniques to improve memory recall and reading retention.
7. Practice increased skills in communication and critical thinking.
8. Demonstrate an increased awareness and understanding of concepts related to diversity.
Course Purpose:
College Success will provide students with an opportunity to develop knowledge, skills, and habits that will lead to success academically and as a life-long learner. The course is designed to help students focus on developing an understanding and working knowledge of concepts and techniques proven to increase college success, as well as personal development. This course includes material on general orientation to college, academic and class preparation tools, and life management skills that facilitate one’s success as a student.
Instructional Strategies: The instructor will employ a variety of instructional strategies including group discussions, lectures, experiential exercises, assigned readings, and specific inclass and out-of-class assignments.
Course Policies
Attendance: Research conducted on student success in college clearly demonstrates that attendance is one of the most crucial factors that exists. Because a student’s fullest learning and growth opportunities exist when they attend this class, low attendance will result in a lower grade.
The course is offered online; students are expected to submit assignments each week. Falling behind will result in low grades.
Course Evaluation: Each assignment has been assigned a point value and the point value is located in parentheses ( ) after the assignment. Class assignments are closely related to attendance and are due on the date listed on the attached course schedule. Late work will not be accepted.

Class Cancellation Procedure: If I am to be away for a conference or other scheduled offcampus event, I will let you know in advance. If I am ill, a notice will be posted on the classroom door. If the weather causes the college or some classes to be canceled, you should listen to the local radio or check Eastern’s website or Facebook page. If the schools in your area are closed, roads are hazardous, and you feel it is too dangerous to drive, by all means, stay home. Use your own judgment. You are, however, responsible for the work covered that day.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty, or cheating, can take many forms- plagiarism, copying off of someone else, submitting someone else’s work as your own, etc. Students are expected to do their work on class assignments and plagiarism, the unacknowledged use of source materials, is unacceptable. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated- any student found guilty of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade.
