MULTIGENERATIONAL HOMES

WHAT ARE THEY?

Multigenerational homes are typically homes that consist of 3 or more generations within a family. However, in cases refered to as “skipped generations,” a multigenerational home can consist of two nonsequencial generatins. Due to economical conditions, multigenerational living has been gaining popularity in recent years. Benefits of multigenerational living include: low cost childcare, financial stability, improved mental health, and it is easier to persue higher education.

HOW DOES CULTURE COME INTO PLAY?

Many cultures highly value family togetherness, thus making institutions such as senior living facilities or nursing homes tabboo within these cultures. Within hispanic culture, multigenerational living is beneficial for all parties involved. This style of living not only relieves financial burdens but also allows for the preservation of their cultural heritage and deep respect for their elders.

Cultures with the highest percentage of multigenerational homes are:

• Pacific Islander

• American Indian

• Asian

• Hispanic

• “America’s Happiest City”

• Nearby Amenities:

• Hospitals

• Califronia School for Deaf

• California School for Blind

GOALS NEEDS

• Balancing privacy and connection

• Ensuring home is usable for generations to come

• Spaces fitting for each family member’s current and future needs

• Ability to split home to support different family dynamics

• An environment that is suitable for young children

• Private space for each family member

• Ensure acessibility for aging grandparents

• Room for family to grow and change

Homes aren’t often built to accommodate large families. In multigenerational dwellings, there is a need to ensure that the home is usable throughout every step of the human experience. Also, it’s essential to ensure that the home can withstand the wear and tear caused by active children.
