MAISON LATAPIE
Precedent analysis Maison Latapie by architects Lacaton & Vassal. The architects put heavy emphasis on the ability for the house to transform as the occupant sees fit. Through the use of plan, elevation, section, and GIF, the works in this section highlight the movement of the house.

The insulated part of the house consists of a volume inside of another. The outer layer is made of corrugated steel that features doors that swing outward and awnings that swing upwards. Within that volume is a wooden volume that consists of folding doors that span the entire front of the house.
The back of the house is a conservatory made of transparent polycarbonate sheeting. This section of the house allows for the occupant to expand into this area during the warmer seasons of the year. Similar to the insulated section of the house, it consists of swinging doors and awnings that span the entirety of the wall.

The GIF shows the full range of motion of the moving parts of Maison Latapie. The front of the house highlights both the motion of corrugated steel volume and the wooden volume and the relationship between them. The back of the house emphasizes how the conservatory is used. During colder months, the occupant is confined to the insulated volume, while in the warmer months occupant activity expands to the conservatory and beyond.

YOUTH HOSTEL
Using recovered materials from the slated I-81 demolition in Syracuse, the project makes use of the material in the construction of a youth hostel. The project makes use of mainly I-beams in order to create a double layer facade.

Despite mainly consisting of rigid, man-made materials, the overall design of the building is made to imitate something closer to nature. The entrance of the building is a narrow opening, similar to a valley, and then opens up into a wide courtyard. Some of the floors consists of overhangs that create balcony spaces on the level below, to create an experience as if one were walking on the side of a cliff. The outer wall of the building is designed to be simple so that the focus is on the jagged ins and outs of the valley and courtyard walls.

The main highlight of the building is the use of the recycled I-81 I-beams to create a double layer facade for the exterior courtyard and valley walls. When one stands in the courtyard and looks up, the staggered I-beams give the effect of a cascading waterfall. The I-beams also serve the purpose to blend in the railing of the balconies with the rest of the building.

PUBLIC VS PRIVATE DIAGRAM
Each floor of the youth hostel follows the same public/private pattern. The outer layer consists of private programming. This includes rooms such as bedrooms, bathrooms, offices, and self serving areas. The next layer is public, and serves as a communal space. Programming for this area includes lounges, dining hall, the gym, and the lobby. The very center of the building is the courtyard, which serves as the highlight of the youth hostel. The courtyard encompasses the ground area, as well as all the balconies on each floor that look into it. It is the part of the building that brings everything together.

Taking inspiration for the Issey Miyake
Autumn Winter 2021/22 Collection
Monochrome Planet Set, the Miyake Pavilion uses the themes found in the garments to create an architectural experience that mirrors just that. The pavilion highlights the predominant use of circular pleats found in the set.

Through the use of 2D and 3D strategies in conjunction with solid and void, the works in this section go into depth with the study of form and the effect of form.

By starting at primitive form, then working all the way to reinterpreted form, the project is a timeline of how one can start with simple shapes and then build it up through several iterations into something much more complex.

FIT AND FUNCTION
Analysis of movement of the body through form and space, and how one’s embodied experience relates to spatial conditions. The work follows the movement of the body as it performs a full stroke on the erg machine.

ERG OVERLAYS
Starting with the overlaid sequential frames of the erg movement, the skeleton is created. The skeleton calls attention to specific joint points of each frame, namely the foot, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, and hand.

The analysis of the erg movement compares perfect form against the imperfect human form. It becomes evident how human form only deviates slightly from perfect form, but never achieves it. The analysis also covers the inverse correlation between the angle of the knee and the angle of the elbow. As the angle of the knee increases, the angle of the elbow decreases.
