Choosing The Rifle For Your Discipline Or Leisure Activity

Choosing The Rifle For Your Discipline Or Leisure Activity Hunters and shooters all have their preference for the discipline they enjoy, whether this refers to a leisure activity such as weekend shooting at the range, competition shooting, wing-shooting or deer hunting in the South – or any other form that requires of them to arrive with the gun or rifle of their choice, complemented by the ammunition they will use. When it comes to the different shooting disciplines, longrange shooting stands out for many. It is, as it says, shooting at whatever the target is over long distances such as, say, 800 yards, or 1 000, or further. Others may prefer shorter distances such as 300 or 400 yards. It makes sense that the shorter range shooter on the one hand, and the long-range shooter on the other, should be aware that they have different requirements, also when it comes to the rifle they use, their skills levels, their experience in terms of which environmental factors will be tested severely. For the long-range shooter, especially, hitting a target the first time is important since he/she may not get another chance: accuracy is of paramount importance lest you lose out on taking down that trophy or hitting bull’s eye. It further means having to make sure you own and use a superior rifle for long-range purposes, of which some do stand out over some others. Examples of those often favored by long-range shooters include, for example, models from Savage, Remington, Browning, Creedmoor, and Mauser and, for many, the Proof Research. This is a rifle that has made great strides in recent times and it looks like it is assured of being right up there with the very best for years to come. It does offer the shooter various positives: a wellknown brand, features such as keeping in mind shooters’ requirement for being lightweight (especially popular with hunters that trek through the bush over long distances all day long, having to carry their rifle and other items), durable and designed to be accurate – also over long distances. Of course one needs to feel comfortable handling the rifle that will be your choice for the next years. Make sure it fits your purposes of long-range shooting, test it for features such as the appropriate cheek rest when you aim, the best profile to suit your body type, and also the optics you will use. This further means having to make sure that you choose a rifle for which parts, when you need them, are readily available near you, whether that is a trigger or a barrel. All of these combine to contribute to the success of the rifle as a long-range option you choose in the end. The long-range hunter soon finds that other factors are at play than shooting over 100 or 200 and 300 yards. Issues such as, for example, breathing control, consistent trigger action, body position and having to change it quickly, wind drift and its value/influence on your efforts, and other factors which have to be considered, become important.

This is why, in addition to looking for the perfect rifle, long-range shooters often attend shooting school where the above issues and other factors are discussed and they receive great tips in terms of being successful when they’re out there in the field, or at the very least they speak to other long-range shooters with experience, or to the retailer they acquire their rifle from. Never underestimate the value of ammunition either. Always buy the ammunition that complements the profile of your specific rifle; ask for advice too from retailers and specialist gun shops, or from friends that enjoy the same activity as you do. Long-range shooting is not an activity at which you are likely to excel overnight: give yourself time to practice, to get used to the fact that it is not the same as short-distance shooting. And remember, always, that acquiring the best rifle for your purposes can never be underestimated.
