EVOCATIO Since our inception in 2010, EVOKX has staged Evocation: The Art of Giving, an annual concert series in line with our mission and vision to engage youths in community and social work through choral singing and performance. Every year, we invite guest choirs from various schools to perform with us. This year is no exception, with choirs from Greendale Secondary School, Pasir Ris Secondary School, St. Hilda’s Secondary School, and Zhonghua Secondary School joining us.

Through Evocation: The Art of Giving, we embark on a shared journey to raise funds and promote awareness of social and charitable causes in Singapore. Our past beneficiaries include The Red Pencil (Singapore), Rare Disorders Society (Singapore) and Riding for the Disabled Association of Singapore. To help our beneficiaries extend their reach, we invite representatives from the beneficiaries on stage to speak about their cause and spread awareness to our audiences.

We afford our singers the unique opportunity to volunteer with various organisations throughout the year, and share the joy of year-end festivities through Christmas carolling.

We also collaborate with charity organisations outside of our concert series - we carolled last Christmas at Inspire For Hope, a fundraising event for Down Syndrome Association Singapore.

This year, we’ve collaborated with the Community Health Assessment Team (CHAT), a national outreach programme under the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) that reaches out to young people with mental health concerns. With this partnership, we hope to break the stigma around this topic and raise awareness of the importance of youth mental health.

We are delighted to extend these volunteering opportunities to those involved in Evocation: The Art of Giving this year, through monthly performances and group singing sessions with patients at IMH. We believe that music and singing are some of the ways that can offer respite, insight and a voice to mental health. We sincerely hope that our music sparks both a light to those who seek it, and to those who will hold that light for others.

MUSIC & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Terrence Toh Terrence Toh is a Singaporean choral director and music educator. He holds a Master of Music from Boston University and has studied under Dr. André de Quadros, Dr. Owen Brian William and Dr. Diana R. Dansereau.

Terrence’s research interest is in the transformative powers of music, music education and music-making.

2010 in Riva Del Garda, Italy, and won a gold medal and diploma respectively.

The choir also participated in Orientale Concentus 2014, Singapore and emerged winner in the Mixed Voices Junior Youth category.

Terrence led the Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) Choir to her first Gold award in the 2011 SYF Central Judging and a Gold Level V diploma at the 12th Consorso Corale Internazionale 2012. He brought the CHIJ Katong Convent Choir to the 28th International Franz Schubert Choir Competition held in Vienna, Austria, Pasir Ris Secondary School (PRSS) Choir to the 3rd International Krakow Choir Festival and Pioneer Junior College (PJC) Choir to the 3rd Krakow Advent & Christmas Choir Festival. Equally active in staging public performances in Singapore, Terrence’s choirs are regularly featured in Esplanade’s Limelight, a concert series that showcases the best local school choirs.

In his international debut as a conductor, Terrence led the National University of Singapore (NUS) Choir and Tanjong Katong Secondary School (TKSS) Choir to four gold awards in four competition categories at the 21st Century International Choral Festival in Genting, Malaysia. The NUS Choir was awarded the “Best Interpretation Award” and Terrence was honoured with the “Most Promising Conductor Award” in the same festival. Terrence led Ngee Ann Primary School (NAPS) Choir to her first ever Gold award in the 2004 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging. He also served as assistant conductor of Victoria Chorale in the season where the choir won the Sacra Acapella category Terrence is the founder, artistic and at the World Choir Games 2006 in music director of EVOKX, a non-profit community choir that engages youths Xiamen, China. in raising public awareness for social Under his direction, the Anglican High and charitable causes. EVOKX, a portmanteau of the words ‘evoke’ and ‘vox’, was founded in 2010 as a non-profit choral group by music and artistic director Terrence Toh. At the heart of EVOKX, our singers share a passion to inspire our audiences with choral music that resonates with the soul, and instill empathy and charity through community engagement and choral performance.

We stand strong in our pursuit for artistic excellence, and strive to nurture our singers’ love of choral music by giving them an avenue to further pursue their interest in choral singing. In evoking the senses, emotions, and memories through the music we make, we hope to bring meaning and purpose to the community at large, and stay steadfast to our fundamental belief that music can bring people from all walks of life together to do good.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR Sherilyn Lim Sherilyn Lim believes in the vital role that music plays in bringing people together to make positive changes in the community. EVOKX is where she finds joy in making music with like-minded musicians.

As assistant conductor of EVOKX under the guidance of Music and Artistic Director Terrence Toh, Sherilyn rehearses and prepares the choir for their performances, and has led the choir during the Christmas season and at the choir’s annual concert, Evocation 2016: The Art of Giving. She is also assistant conductor of Zhonghua Secondary School Choir.

Sherilyn sings with the Singapore Symphony Youth Choir, the Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus and EVOKX. Her main chorus performances this year include La Bohème with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Aida with the Singapore Lyric Opera.

Sherilyn is a Master of Architecture graduate from the National University of Singapore. In August 2017, she completed a Continuing Professional Development Programme for Choral Conducting from the Conservatory of Music and Drama at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR Ong Wei Shen Keane Lauded for his impeccable musicality, expression, and lyricism, Singaporean lyric baritone Keane Ong is one of today’s most promising soloists, choral directors, composers and pedagogues from Asia.

He will be playing the role of the second commissioner and the jailer in New Opera Singapore’s (NOS) August production of Francis Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites. Keane and The Pioneer Voices will also be presenting their latest choral concert featuring the beauty of sacred texts and secular poetry in early August. Keane’s previous operatic roles include Le Baron in Massanet’s Chérubin with the Peabody Opera, and John Styx in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld with NOS. He recently obtained his Masters in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, studying with American baritone William Sharp, and was awarded the George Castelle Memorial Award for Voice. Keane has also had Minor lessons in conducting at the Peabody institute with Dr Harlan Parker and continues his conducting studies with Singaporean choral director Terrence Toh. He graduated with a Bachelors of Voice Performance in 2016 from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music of the National University of Singapore, studying with lyric tenor Alan Bennett.

OUR BENEFICIARY Community Health Assessment Team (CHAT) The Community Health Assessment Team (CHAT) is an outreach arm of the Early Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP). CHAT aims to raise awareness of youth mental health and encourage early helpseeking behaviour for mental health concerns among young people through a variety of outreach initiatives. It provides confidential and personalised mental health checks and mental health resources to young persons aged 16 to 30 years old who may face emotional or psychological distress. During the check, the young person will meet with a CHAT youth support worker who will ascertain the difficulties experienced. Following which, CHAT will recommend the most appropriate support services and at the same time facilitate referrals to the recommended support services if they are keen. Should the they require further follow-up with mental healthcare professionals at any restructured hospital, CHAT can further assist by making a referral to ensure that care is provided at subsidised rates.

The Early Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP) was initiated in 2001 under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, Singapore. It is part of a national mental health programme that specialises in detection and management of early psychosis and those at high risk of developing psychosis. EPIP provides holistic and integrated service through a multi-disciplinary team, for persons aged 16 - 40 years with untreated first-episode psychosis. Interventions include the use of medication, case management, psychotherapy and psycho-social intervention. EPIP services are available in the inpatient, outpatient and community settings. Your kind support will go towards the inpatient activities e.g. Art Therapy sessions.

RAYMOND LEE Conductor of Greendale Secondary School Choir

Raymond obtained his Diploma in Music Performance (Vocal Studies) at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music from the University of Wales (UK) under the guidance of Lim Shieh Yih. In 2015, Raymond graduated with a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting, under tutelage of Professor Pedro Monteiro at the University of Saint Joseph (Macau).

Raymond was the first-prize winner of The 34th (2008) and 37th Malaysia National Art Song Singing Competition (2011) The Trinity Guildhall Music Competition in Singapore (2011) and the American Protégé International Vocal Competition (2016) in Traditional Repertoire (Professional Group).

Raymond made his operatic debut in 2011 with the Singapore Lyric Opera as the Second Jew in Strauss’ Salome.

In 2016, he sang as Pang in Puccini’s Turandot, while in 2018, he sang as Scholar Tao with the Singapore

Chinese Orchestra in their semistaged performance of Liu San Jie. As a recitalist, Raymond has held numerous solo recitals. He has performed in Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore and United States.

Raymond was invited to perform the Tenor Solo in Bach’s Motet BWV227, Cantata BWV24, Mass in B Minor, as well as Beethoven’s Symphony No.9.

Raymond is also active as a Choral Conductor in both Singapore and Malaysia. Under his guidance, his choirs have received Gold awards in international choir competitions.

Between 2013 to 2018, his students have won many prizes in prestigious competitions such as the American Protégé (New York) and ZhongSin International Music Talent Competition (China).

EVANGELINE TAY Conductor of St. Hilda’s Secondary School Choir

Evangeline began her choral training at the young age of 3 when she started singing in her church’s children’s choir. Her love for choral music continued to blossom as she was privileged to join the Choral Excellence Choirs in her secondary and junior college years.

Evangeline holds a Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music in Musicology/Ethnomusicology from the University of Melbourne.

From 2003-2006, Evangeline was also awarded the Newman College Choral Scholarship, and sang with the Newman College Choir under the directorship of Dr Gary Ekkels and As a student conductor and pianist performed at numerous concerts and since her secondary school days, festivals in that period.

Evangeline had experience of working with both school and community After her return to Singapore, choirs at a young age, and watching Evangeline worked primarily as lives transform through music an accompanist and assistant choir making. This has led to her personal conductor from 2008-2011, and philosophy in her teaching where made the transition into full-time she believes that musical excellence conducting in 2012. should result in a positive influence in the lives of her students.

Greendale Chorale was formed in 2006 with the inception of the school. Since then, the choir has grown from strength to strength.

In 2009, they took part in the 3rd Orientale Concentus in Taiwan and emerged Category Champion. They also won their category in the 2nd Winter Choral Festival in Hong Kong in 2010. In 2013, they obtained the school’s first-ever Certificate of Distinction for SYF Arts Presentation. In recent years, they were part of the school’s biannual concert Eladneerg which were well received by the audience. With a strong emphasis on musicality and leadership, the choir seeks to develop all-rounded individuals who are contributing members of the society.

The PRSS Choir aims to build a family of choir members with character beauty, who are self-directed to achieve a high standard of performance that celebrates cultural diversity. The choir prides herself by working together as a family where no member is left behind, as the members supports one another to overcome difficulties and celebrates successes as one cohesive unit.

Since 2009, the choir has found new direction under the baton of Mr Terrence Toh. He led the choir to a SYF Gold award in 2011 and a 2nd runner up showing at the International Krakow Choir Festival “Cracovia Cantans” in 2012. The choir was awarded a Certificate of Distinction in the SYF Arts Presentation since 2013, establishing itself as a performing arts group with immense potential and promise.

ST. HILDA’S SECONDARY SCHOOL CHOIR Conducted by Evangeline Tay

ZHONGHUA SECONDARY SCHOOL CHOIR Conducted by Terrence Toh

The St. Hilda’s Secondary School Choir is a SSAA chorale group comprising of members between the ages of 13 to 16. Also known as the Hildan Chorale, they attained the Certificate of Distinction award for the SYF Arts Presentation in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

In addition to the SYF, the Hildan Chorale also took the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examination in 2014 and achieved ‘Distinction’ for the Beginners Level. They received the ‘B plus’ grade for the ABRSM examination in 2016 for the Intermediate Level. In the same year, they participated in the 9th Orientale Concentus International Choral Festival and attained the Gold (Grade III) award in the Equal Voices (Junior) category. The Hildan Chorale is committed to helping the girls realise their singing potential and providing opportunities for them to showcase their talent. It is their belief that all the girls are stars in their own right but shine the brightest together.

Zhonghua Secondary School Choir comprises of about 60 young and enthusiastic singers, who all share the same passion for music.

The choir has actively participated in a variety of events through the years. They have performed for the school’s Aesthetics Festival, National Day community singing and even for the annual Prize Giving Day. The choir has also taken part in external events such as the Singapore Youth Festival Celebrations and held exchange programmes with other school choirs.

The choir also takes part in the biannual Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, achieving a Certificate of Accomplishment in 2017.

Through these performances and practices, they allow the choir to gain valuable experiences and learn the importance of teamwork, respect, trust and communication.

The choir will continue to strive to reach greater heights in their musicianship.

Dumbele

Rodolfo Delarmente (1947) Dumbele is a piece to accompany ritual and was composed by Delarmente based on Ramon Obusan’s research into dance rituals. The piece depicts a ritual to honour the rain god, Dumbele. The composition contains onomatopoeic words that imitate the sound of rain, transforming from a drizzle to downpour.

The Art of Your Giving The main visual for Evocation 2018: The Art of Giving is a collective artwork that brings the meaning of The Art of Giving closer to our singers, in addition to our overarching goal to engage youths to do good. All choirs involved in Evocation: The Art of Giving were asked to contribute to the artwork by relating 9 personal objects to instances where giving made a positive difference in their lives. The contributors accompanied their objects with a short writeup explaining their experience.

The key point was to identify an instance of positive difference being made, as a result of the act of giving or receiving.

Each of their stories are represented visually, released weekly on our Instagram and Facebook pages in the run-up to the concert, accompanied by their write-up. Collectively, one object from each person’s 9 objects forms the final artwork, representing the collective efforts of Evocation 2018: The Art of Giving.
