“Don’t throw trash everywhere. Lead a simple life.”

3 Young Women’s Cleaning Trip around Taiwan “A simple yet beautiful thing to do for Taiwan” Three university students 鄭洵, 薛芮哲 and 蔡佩姍 began their cleaning trip on July 9th. “We ‘test-drove’ it for 4 days to see if we have the ability to realize our dream,” 鄭洵 said during our exclusive interview. Their trip is one of the many funded by governmental 青 輔會 the National Youth Commission’s annual 青年壯遊 點 Youth Travel Spots Program. “We were considering a few different things to do. Our list contained environmental protection and animal issues. Eventually, we decided that we can help make Taiwan cleaner. It’s a simple yet beautiful thing - it’s what we can do for Taiwan,” the young women said. They went to Gongliao Rock Festival to clean the beach on the 11th. On the 16th, they made the United Daily News headline in a report titled「女大生背垃圾桶環島 被沙灘辣妹趕」(lit. “College Women Travel around with Trash Bins, Chased away by Bikini Girls”). When asked about this incident, they answered that the reporter had misinterpreted. They didn’t get chased away - they heard bikini girls whispering to each other that they「有 礙觀瞻」(don’t fit into the scene, are unpleasant to look at). “Every girl has her place in this world. Bikini girls look nice and make guys happy. We are kinda pretty too, but we like to clean Taiwan more.”

This year’s Gongliao Rock Festival has left an recordbreaking amount of trash behind, according to Taiwanese news reports. Yet the girls said that is not the dirtiest place they’ve been to. “基隆 Keelung is hands down the Nr.1 so far. Way too few trash bins! And people just accidentally dropped their trash when there was no trash bins around.” The most frequent trash type the girls have seen is cigarettes packagings and wrappings, and Nr.2 is beverage packagings and straws. They also picked up many plastic bags. “We want to ask our fellow Taiwanese - especially smokers and beverage drinkers PLEASE wait until you see a trash bin to throw away your trash!” The young women’s trip is scheduled to end on the 30th. Then, they will write an report for the Commission. They will remain active in social work after this program. Their Facebook Fan Page (source of photos): http://www.facebook.com/simplebeauty2012

Each summer, Yilan invites art groups around the world for performance and provide opportunities for Yilan’s schools and children to interact with them. This year, Guatemalan ambassador William Manuel Tapia Aleman paid a surprise visit during his countrymen Rondalla de Marimba Gerardo’s performance. He played guitar spontaneously with them.
